Have never thought about life in North Korea . This story amazed and shocked me. The oppression and cruel lack of any freedom in this country is appalling. Brave and finally successful search for freedom.

What a messed up, bizarrely horrific leadership which attempts to run that country! It's amazing the people of North Korea accept this rule which is beyond evil. Truly eye opening, more people need to be informed what is going on in North Korea.

This was a well-written book describing a young man's early days in the Pyongyang, exile to the camp 10 years and then his escape to South Korea through China. It is really an amazing story. I couldn't put the book down and ended up reading it in 2 or 3 days.

It's happening again. The world sat by and watched Hitler slaughter 6 million Jews and did little to help or stop it. Now the government, run by the ungodly and evil Kim Jong Il, is slaughtering its own people by the millions, and who is speaking out or doing anything to stop it? This brave man is one who was there, endured near starvation, beatings, atrocities, and is speaking out for the world to hear. You owe it to yourself to buy and read this book and not be one who tried to say "I didn't know" and did nothing.

This book started slow. The introduction is not the story and the first chapter is just a set-up. When you get into the story, it pulls you in and you are constantly hoping that the protagonist gets out, but also realizing that thousands of people are still in that situation. The book still comes to my thoughts weeks later.

This was an excellent book. I've read some other books about North Korea but they were heavy going. This book told the authors story through the eyes of a child camp survivor and was well written and clear. I would recommend this.

This book was disturbing on so many levels, I don't know where to begin! It's really difficult to believe such a horrific place can exist in this world! The North Korean people have been psychologically oppressed like no other people on the planet! Their lives are not their own! The only reason why this can exist is because a cadre of psychopaths rule the country with terror, murder, slavery and an obtuse disregard for others. When this regime falls, the world will be shaken by the level of psychological dysfunction and desperation experienced by the North Korean people.

Kang offered a harrowing, but insightful view into the terror that is the North Korean regime. The fact that the government can and does enslave innocent people is bizarre and terrifying. Whilst well written and easy to read, the content is not easy to face. That said, it is an essential read that anyone with an interest in North Korea should read!

This account provides a chilling & insightful view of the lives of the forgotten political prisoners of the N. Korean gulag system , and how these unfortunate prisoners were systematically viewed and treated as little more than "tailless animals". Powerful study of survival. I could not put the book down.

Kang's book reminds us not to forget those unfortunates locked away by their own govt for the desire for basic human rights..or who just happen to be related to someone who desires them. Great read. I recommend it.

Very educational and easy to read. What a world! I wish the government of North Korea would follow Russia and East Germany and make the choices that would ease the suffering of their people. Makes its point without being preachy.

This book is a "must read" for anyone conerned about personal freedoms and human rights. What the author has endured is unspeakable in any kind of civilized society. The detailed description of the concentration camp and it's workings will mesmerize the reader and then numb the senses. Why do the the Korean people tolerate this treatment of their citizens? Truly, Stalinism is alive and well in north Korea.
