Early on, I could not understand why a seasoned traveler to N. Korea would make such a stupid mistake, and create a national crisis. He cost the US thousands of dollars and possibly created an international crisis. All because he did something stupid. He knew better, and despite his fortitude and unending faith to sustain him, he brought it upon himself. He put his religion ahead of his family, and interestingly, he only gave his wife, Lidya, passing acknowledgement at the end of the book. Is he still married to her, or did he lose a second marriage to misplaced priorities.

The book was well written, and you could not help but feel sympathy, but how many people suffered and how much extraordinary cost and effort on the part of our country was worth what he caused from his mistake. People who take the risk to go to dangerous countries should not expect the US to bail them out, especially when they know the risks going in.

One of the greatest stories of how God leads when we commit our lives to Him. It reminds me of the book of Job. Kenneth was not aware that this might have been a challenge made by Satan to God concerning his trust in Him. In the end like James says in James 5:11 "You have heard of the steadfastness of Job(Kenneth)?
Like a ship in a severe storm, rocked, and overcome by powerful wind and waves, BUT was not sunk by those horrible waves. Kenneth came out of this tremendous storm.
His testimony is truly strengthening to believers everywhere, and also demonstrates the power of believers in constant prayer, and again Satan's (the Accuser of the brethren) utter failure when God allowed him to try Kenneth.
A delightful, riveting story.

I found this book to be well written, informative and inspiring. Pastor Bae is pulls no punches about the mistake he made which led to his imprisonment in North Korea. It was interesting to follow his growing understanding of why North Koreans view their leaders as gods, given their relentless indoctrination by their government and their complete lack of access to any alternative sources of information. The turning point of the book for me, and the turning point of Bae's experience is a Christian imprisoned for his faith, came when he stopped praying and waiting for release and instead simply asked God to use him where he was. His story proves that in even the most adverse circumstances, God cares for His own in both large and small ways, and that when we truly surrender our "right" to ourselves, God can build bridges of respect and communication in the most impossible circumstances.

This is a wonderful inspiring story about a man of God during an extreme trail period in his life. It is amazing how supposedly intelligent people can espouse the tenants of communism. The Communist Party of America supports Hillary Clinton as President! What does this say about her and the many people who support her?

Absolutely a page turner! This hero of the faith endured much brutality, both mentally and physically, while imprisoned in North Korea. This book does not disappoint. Kenneth Bae gives an honest account of his two years in prison, particularly how God strengthened his faith and molded his character as he cried out to Him for mercy.

Kenneth Bae shares his love for the North Korean people and how it lead him to develop an undercover mission to pray for them in one of the most repressive regimes on earth. God opened his eyes to the darkness and isolation that the North Korean people live in. They live this way because of "The
American Threat." The Korean government must spend all their money on weapons for protection, while their people starve. Kim il Jung is worshiped as god.

This was an excellent account of Kenneth's trials and his endurance through times of dealing with the unknown. His openness as he shares his struggles, questions and surrender of his plans in exchange for God's plans for him makes you rethink how you deal with trials and challenging times. A low key telling of an extremely tense and critical series of national events. A tense game of chess!
