I love this book! Full of helpful information for all you fellow chicken lovers! Love the recipes for making treats for our feathered friends, and the natural perspective on raising a healthy flock. I've made a few of the "treats" already, and my chickens gobbled them up!
The pictures are great, too. Lisa is a chicken guru. I highly recommend buying this book and adding it to your chicken library.

This book is not only beautiful (to begin with) but inspiring, informative and a breath of fresh, clear, holistic air! There are many books on raising chickens, but this book is in a class of its own - this book is about raising healthy, holistic, and happy hens in a natural way, free of toxins and chemicals.
As someone who eats an organic toxin free diet myself, I want that for my girls. I have not been much of a gardener but between the wisdom in this book and my happy hens, I am inspired to grow the herbs Lisa recommends and prepare some of these delectable treats for them. I have already been giving my hens and baby chicks some of the herbal treats and they jump (literally) for joy and are thriving.
This is a must have book for anyone who cares about the planet, about sustainability, an organic lifestyle and raising hens with tender loving and natural care.
The book is also beautiful to behold. I'm the host of the internet based Chicken Show so I read lots of books, mostly great ones, about urban chicken keeping, and this one just makes me feel happy to be a chicken keeper - and inspires me to plant my garden - and be healthier. You can tell, I love, love, love this book!

I've enjoyed Lisa Steele's facebook site for quite a while, and her book does not disappoint. Intelligently written but easy to read, the book shares her knowledge and experience and is accompanied by beautiful pictures. She also includes natural and healthy ways to raise and support your chickens without all the unhealthy antibiotics and pesticides so many of us are raising chickens to avoid. If you have a backyard flock or are considering getting chickens, put this book at the top of your list!

Not only is this a great book about keeping chickens, Lisa also injects a lot of wisdom about the use of herbs for chickens and for use in the henhouse, plus giving recipes for natural cleaning solutions using citrus & vinegar. I have been raising chickens for over 40 years but this book had many new ideas for me and has inspired me to grow more herbs next year for use with my chickens and as natural insecticides inside the coop. The artwork, photos and illustrations are beautiful - this book is a MUST HAVE for anyone raising chickens or thinking of doing so! It is a real gem!

I am new to raising back yard chickens. After reading a ton of books I settled on this as my main source. It's easy to ready, full of information, and even 'lays' out the week to week progress you should expect to see your chickens doing. My birds are happy, healthy and fun.

This lovely, quick read is excellent for the beginning chicken farmer just starting out in chickens or even the pro that needs a little refresher course on what herbs are beneficial for chickens. I appreciate the candor and the simplified voice of the book. It's all about how you can get the freshest, healthiest eggs from your chickens; whether that means keeping them entertained, happily munching on home-made goodies or even the joys of planting your own chicken garden! There are recipes for molting chickens, how to keep them in winter, fall and summer in the cold and heat. An extremely informative book that gets you super excited to start chicken farming. This book belongs in your gardening collection and will prove a great resource over and over again.

I love this book! When I decided I wanted chickens I checked out tons of books from the library this was one of them after reading just a bit of this book I got online and ordered it. There is tons of great information in this book and it is presented in an easy to understand way so many of the other books made keeping chickens seem hard but this book made it seem do-able and more importantly fun! And so far my chicks and I are all doing great!

Just started my adventure with backyard chickens. This book is going to be referred to often, I can see. Fits needs well as I want my chickens to be happy, healthy pets I enjoy. She has a chapter on pampering them with fun treats. I referred to the safe herbs list right away to find something I could give my baby chicks. The feed store will give you the run down on care but not holistic or pampered. The book offers education on many topics: health, nutrition, housing safety, safe weeds and herbs, chicken happiness, signs of illness and treatment, baby chicks fro feedstore, baby chicks from mama hen. Also a very attractive book with lots of pictures. Recommend.

I came into the whole chicken thing, basically, honestly, just for the eggs. I soon learned that just can't be done! CHICKENS ARE TOTALLY ADDICTING! Lisa has written a very concise & practical book that is a must have for any chicken owner, (or anyone thinking of owning chickens). I love this book! Thank you Lisa!

After first finding the Fresh Eggs Daily blog, I knew that this book was going to have a special place on my bookshelf! The book itself is beautiful, and has lots of beautiful pictures inside! Lisa Steele, did an amazing job in providing information based on her own experiences using natural and holistic remedies and preventatives with her own flock! She provides several recipes for various things using herbs, including coop cleaners, feeding mixes, and nest box blends. In an era of over use of medications and antibiotics, this book provides respite from all that! It makes me happy to know that I can raise chickens that are going to feed my family without using a lot of medications and chemicals that I don't know what they are going to do to my family! This book is definitely going to be a great go-to resource for me in my chicken keeping journey!

Read this little book before you get chickens...and after, too. Tons of good info, logically arranged, sprinkled with great pics and recipes. Lisa will get you in tune with chickens, even BEFORE you get chickens! A fun read, never preachy, the tone is like chatting with your best friend at her kitchen table. I recommend a cup of coffee and a muffin to accompany this book.
The highlights: Page 78, the Molt Muffin recipe. Page 118, the first aid kit list. Pages 138-140, Health Benefits of Herbs, Weeds, and Flowers.

Mostly I really like the down-to-earth approach Lisa has for keeping chickens. I've already started a few changes in my coop based on what I read in the book. I haven't found anything yet that I don't enjoy/like.

This is a terrific book full of all natural resources and recipes. The author includes her cleaning tips and all natural cleaning product recipes. It is easy to read and the ingredients she suggests are easily ordered right her on the store. I read the book in one evening and started implementing her ideas right away. Yesterday I put some fresh garlic in my waterers and trimmed some rosemary from my garden to put in the run area. The book is worth every penny if you love your chickens like I do!

The author states her book is not intended for newbies to get started with chickens but I can tell you I have received more information from this book than any other source.
For example where I bought my pullets, they never told me use starter food for them until they started laying, or that it could damage their kidneys. This possibly explain why I lost a few.
Lisa presents the book in a very easy to read, easy to follow format.
I read this book page to page in 2 days. (I do work full time and I have 3 kids which why this is so impressive.)
I love that Lisa discusses natural remedies that are also cost effective too.
My advice to anyone who is thinking about or already has chickens is to get this book. I have other books that are very informative but just do not flow so well.
