This book is a "fast" read. The topics covered will help anyone in there interaction with people and with self understanding. Great for those that might find themselves having to speak in public or to a group of any size. Well worth the read and, for what it has to offer, worth the cost!

Ailes wrote wrote this self-help book about 25 years ago.. before the internet explosion and social networking but the principles he conveys are still relevant. The book would benefit from some updating given the tremendous success Ailes has enjoyed over the past few decades. Still, the book is an easy read and his advice is timeless.

The book is excellent and loaded with great antedotes. Very entertaining authir with useful tips for better communication.
The book was only rated 3 stars because it was advertised Very Good and it should have been Good. The pages were yellowed, stained and it smelled like it was 100 years old...musty.

Helps you understand how to present yourself better in public, on camera, etc. I really liked his listening tips. I think listening is the lost art of evangelism. You have to learn to listen if you are going to become good at marketing.

The world is full of speaking coaches, but probably no one has a better track record for success than Roger Ailes. You may remember that Mr. Ailes helped President Reagan prepare for the critical second debate against former Vice President Walter Mondale in 1984 (". . . I promise not to hold his youth and inexperience against him"), and was a senior media advisor to Vice President Bush in the successful 1988 election campaign. His advice is to keep it as simple as possible for the speaker by building on the speaker's own natural conversational patterns, while accentuating the positive in communicating, avoiding the negative, and adding lots of directed energy.
Mr. Ailes is a great story teller, and he builds his key points with punchy, personal examples. For example, to establish his key principle about making an impression in the first 7 second you are with someone, he tells about meeting Charles Manson in prison and facing him down with steely eye contact. Manson looked away first. Afterwards, Manson was a willing interview subject. A second story builds the point by describing how a subway stick-up gang extorted money from those showing fearful body language by intimidating them.
Even if the book's message was not so important, it would be worthwhile reading the book for the many wonderful stories.
Mr. Ailes' basic point is to break down the art of face-to-face and televised communication into the most important elements. He encourages you to emphasize the unspoken dialogue . . . by how you use your body and respond to what others say. Listeners pay much more attention to the body language and to the emotion they feel from you than to the intellectual content of the message. This accentuated on television. Hit the mute button on your remote, and watch people talking to see his point.
The whole advice could be boiled down to "keep your conversational style. Increase the energy." In doing this, it helps to be prepared, make others comfortable, be interesting, be committed, be likeable, and be helpful. Whatever the circumstances, he advises controlling the emotional tone of the communication.
The book contains many helpful lists including one on the ten things that most hurt communications, such as not establishing adequate rapport in the beginning, or making stiff body movements.
The end of the book contains a helpful user's guide that outlines all of the key points.
I thought that the best advice for improving was to practice watching yourself on video tape, and evaluating your effectiveness along the lines of what Mr. Ailes suggests. The book also contains many excellent exercises for becoming better at deciding what to do as well as implementing your desires.
When I first began making television appearances 20 years ago, I had the benefit of speech coaching. I can certainly agree that the advice here matches well with the experiences that I have had over the 20 years since then, and vastly simplifies what I learned during that coaching. I highly recommend this advice both for its accuracy, and for the relative ease you will feel in implementing it.
After you use this valuable advice to become a much better communicator, I suggest that you think about what is important to you, what you are committed to, and what you can be interesting about. How much time are you spending to communicating with others about those matters? Perhaps you should also focus on getting the message out more . . . as well as improving your delivery of the message.

In a single short cassette, containing the bare essence of the book, Roger Ailes distills the advice he has given countless politicians and business people about communicating. His advice is not terribly complex: be yourself, be interesting, be likable. The book title tells it all: you -- the totality of who you are, speech, gestures, tone, persona -- is as important to the mesasge you convey as the words you utter. The book makes perfect sense. But the problem is that speakers often don't know what it is about theiemselves that makes their speech unpersuasive. That's why folks like Ailes are in buisiness, to provide the objective feedback that breaks through the curtain of self-denial that many of us weave around ourselves.
It's interesting to see how Ailes's techniques can be used by the self-interested. If you are the message, then he will teach you how to keep your enemies off balance, and to retain the message that you want to communicate. In Ailes's world, being likable trumps being right. True enough. Sadly, that advice is as useful for the honest business owner making a sale as it is for the crooked politician trying to outfox the media.

Fantastic communication advice. I consider myself an above average public speaker and have read a number of books related to communication (interpersonal, public speaking, etc.), but Aile's book is now at the top of my list. After years of observing professional entertainers and politicians via a career in TV and consulting, Ailes has packed his pages with real world wisdom based on what really works. Surprisingly, the advice is very simple and intuitive - you are the message. The notion that your words are only one (perhaps small) data point in your total communication to others (think body language, tone & rate of speech, energy level, etc.) runs throughout the book and has powerful implications for communicating well with others.
A must read for anyone who wants to improve their communication skills.

I had a lot experience with public speaking, but there are some very valuable tips, and he encourages you to refine who you are at the deepest level to exude confidence and charisma when speaking publicly. He also delves into the world of non-verbal communication. This book has excellent stories of famous actors, (albeit from the 50s and 60s) and presidents, with whom Ailes has worked, who had the gift of public speaking, and those who did not.
I especially like the chapter about charisma, and commanding the environment when you are around others. If you are interested in knowing what the best speakers in the world know, then you'll enjoy this book.

My college minor some 30 years ago was Speech. I have read some 10 books and many more articles about giving speeches. Roger Ailes book, first published in 1988, is the only one like it I have ever read. His advice is unique, and I believe, right on.
Instead of quirky gimmicks, Ailes starts with the factors that make a great speaker -- some of which will surpise you, and encourage you. The book is very readable with lots of anecdotes and great stories to illustrate his points.
In my consulting with political candidates I recommend it often. Considering this man's success in television and politics, I don't understand why this book is not more widely read and referenced. Instead of quirky gimmicks, Ailes starts with the factors that make a great speaker -- some of which will surpise you, and encourage you. The book is very readable with lots of anecdotes and great stories to illustrate his points.
In my consulting with political candidates I recommend it often. Considering this man's success in television and politics, I don't understand why this book is not more widely read and referenced. I found this book filled with common sense and insight. Written in terms the common man can understand, even if you are not politicly savvy . It resonated with me. I found myself nodding yes, smiling, cheering. It's a feel good book on politics. If I must qualify this book in human terms I would say "sincere". I truly enjoyed it! It' a quick read, can't put it down. What an exciting experience!

I read this book very carefully, particularly the section on talking to the media, and I took every word to heart. I made sure when I went home to greet the throng of reporters waiting for me at my apartment (after I returned home from my temporary Accountant position) that I would take control of the situation and not let the news media bully me around. I immediately addressed the first reporter, simultaneously addressing the question and taking control of the situation by firmly stating "our performance has been stellar, our revenues have increased markedly and so has our marketshare, making our company an even more attractive target for institutional investors..."
My wife then poked her head out the window and said, "Who are you talking to?"
I answered her by saying "I'm addressing the media."
"What Media?" she asked. "You're talking to yourself. You've got to start separating fantasy from reality. You're becoming the Fox News Network."
What outstanding communication skills were displayed by someone who doesn't even speak English (my wife, not Roger Ailes)!
