I adore this series, and I really loved this novella because Rylee and Liam share a few moments of down time and reconnect on so many levels. We are also introduced to some new characters and, I think, one who will probably play a pivotal role in the near future. Warning: Have tissues handy! I can't wait for Wounded to release next month.

One of my very favorite authors strikes again with this novella. It was a lovely read with Rylee and Liam off on a nice relaxing jaunt. Well, except for the beheadings, water dragon and various sundry elements. I thoroughly enjoyed it but I must admit I am anxiously awaiting for the return of Alex in the next book in the series.

I absolutely LUV this series! And Guardian just might be my favorite one yet (even had me crying at the end, LOL).

Thank you Shannon Mayer, for creating such vibrant and wonderful characters. And, especially, for keeping them true to their natures. Can't wait for Wounded's release, next month.

Another fantastic Rylee Adamson book that delivers just what it promises: action, heroics, and yes, Rylee and Liam's long-deserved time together. They are just too fun to see together without being constantly separated for chapters on end (I know, tension drives a plot and keeps readers reading, but still!). This book brings their relationship to a whole new level, including a big surprise (shh, it's a secret) near the end. I'll just say that it's an absolutely lovely, tender scene. Almost tissue time, not that Rylee would admit it.

But Guardian is more than just a two character book. We get glimpses of what it means to be a Guardian as well as tantalizing hints of Alex's eventual role in the resolution of the whole series. We meet interesting new characters and most importantly, stock up on hope for the future, because frankly (and much as I love all the books), the series gets darker and darker and Rylee and Liam's future seems more and more hopeless. At about book 5 I was teetering on the edge of giving up on the series just because I just couldn't take the glum prophesies any more. I need a kernel of hope somewhere! This book keeps me just as blind to how Rylee and Liam will manage to survive in the long run while still giving me the deep-down faith that somehow, things will turn out all right for them. As always, I am amazed at Meyer's creativity and ability to keep heaping on fantasy elements without the whole thing getting out of hand. I don't read much fantasy outside of her work, for just that reason. If only more fantasy writers could write stories like this!

If I have one complaint about this book, it's that it's a bit overpriced as a novella at $2.99. Of course I snapped it straight up, and of course I could have waited for a sale in the future -- but hey, I'm addicted. I respect and appreciate the work of an independent author, so it doesn't kill me to pay it, especially since the store's royalty scheme only pays authors pennies on books priced under $2.99. But I know that other indie authors reward their loyal readers with 0.99 or 1.99 novellas, especially around release time. We snap them up, we drive up the rankings, we write reviews. This is not so much a gripe as a suggestion for the future, because I hope we get several more novellas like this.

Oh, since the blurb doesn't do much to describe the overall story, here it is: Rylee and Liam (and only those two of our well-known band of friends) travel to northern Russia to visit the wolfpack of wise old Peter who will teach Liam more about his powers. But the wolfpack is under attack and Rylee has to step in to help, in her usual no-prisoners-taken (well, sort of!) way.

Finally, if this doesn't appear as a verified purchase it's because we have different accounts for different devices in our family. I did buy the book for $2.99!

Rylee and Liam head to Russia so that Liam can learn to be the Guardian from Peter, who had a few lines during Riley's hunt through Europe for Liam in book three. Vacation time for Riley is never going to happen, as bad guys are everywhere. This book helps to resolve what happened when Liam went rogue. In the story I as a reader notice the that Mayer has learned to write the emotional quiet times that I need to form deeper connections with the characters and plot. Mayer's has grown as a writer with this series.

Now for spoilers, the time of the pale horse is fast approaching Liam. Liam uncovers a secret that Rylee doesn't even know she is carrying. Plus a secret ceremony happens at the end.

This series was the first of Shannons work that I discovered, and I was hooked from the first page of the first book. I've laughed, and cried, and can't wait to see what her other books have to offer.
