Though Lizzie Bright, like Kira Kira, will be better received by young adults, the writing is far superior to the depressing formula of the latter. There is a lot of poetic prose and interesting character developments in this historical piece about religious life in Maine during the early 20th century. I still wouldn't think that Lizzie Bright is Newbery worthy because it is too heavy themed with death, religious persecution, and the sentencing of the elderly to insane asylums. This would be an excellent novel to teach, however, if you were working on figurative language and character development. Outstanding writing from Mr. Schmidt.

This is an excellent, well crafted novel. I am still savoring many phrases and descriptions months later! It was a reading list book for my 4th grader. We had the opportunity to hear Gary Schmidt speak and I couldn't wait to read Lizzy Bright! An important piece of our Nation's History is here and I hope more kids/parents will read and talk about it. I haven't laughed and cried so hard at the same time since "Little Miss Sunshine".

I thought that the story was very well written. The story line, I thought was very original. Some parts through out the book seemed like a little bit of a stretch. I found that the very end was a little out there. However, just before that, was very interesting. Some of the consepts that were brought into it were very interesting. Over all I felt it was a good book and I would recomend it.

This story is all the more compelling because much of it really happened. The history of Malaga Island (off the coast of Phippsburg, Maine) is at the center of this very well written tale. Highly recommend.

Well written story of deeds long since forgotten by Maine.
The forced removal of inhabitants of that tiny island is certainly nothing to be proud of, and has long been swept under the rug. Gary Schmidt did a fine job on "Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy." the store's service was swift and more than satisfactory. And the price was right! Book for young adults, but even old Maine codgers can learn more about this infamous era in the history of their state.

Gary Schmidt wrote a book that touched hearts. The topic subject was definitely sensitive and he touched on a lot of information. The story was often heartbreaking and devastating. It's disturbing that the story is true and definitely is a reality check. At the end of the day he exexcuted really well with this book!

By the way I read the paperback version!

I really, really disliked this book. I had to read it for a bookclub and It was one of the most boring books i ever read. It took me forever to finish. It has boring, typical characters and i pretty much predicted the whole book. I think they were trying to be a good writer by repeating stupid things like "i almost touched a whale" as symbolism, (really??) but i thought it was just annoying. It took me FOREVER to read this book and I couldn't get into it at all, it was mostly 4 or 5 events repeating over and over!!!! UGGHH!! I suggesst you nOT read this book
