This is definitely the best book I've read in a very long time. I am a fan of Thea Harrison's books. She pulls you into a world that you never knew existed. Thank you Thea, hopefully we will see more with these characters again.

The story is a good one but the graphically described sex scenes interrupt and destroy the quality. I won't be purchasing any other Thea Harrison novels. It's too bad this author has some really interesting ideas for tales and for characters but the ridiculous instant love with sex is repugnant.

Sophie and Nikolas are my new favorite couple....they argue, fight banter and love together.
Sophie is part human and part Djinn. She's feisty, snarky, kick -ss and a LAPD consultant.
He's "Wry, warrior, commander, driven, loyal, sexy as hell and she drives him crazy.
Their banter is fast and fun, the story is new and different and so interesting.
There's conflict, hope, attraction, humor, strength, love, victory and fun.
I love the characters, love their interactions and would love to read more about them.
Thoroughly enjoyed the story and highly recommend it.

Most of the time I like Thea Harrison's heroes best, but this time it's all Sophie - the crabbiest and most contrary heroine you're likely to meet. There is almost no overlap with the characters of her previous Elder Races stories, hence spinning this into its own Moonshadow series, but the new characters are every bit as alive and interesting as the old and I can easily picture them meeting. I can't wait for the next.

Thea is such a talented and entertaining writer. Moonshadow is definitely a good book. Great plot and super characters. It's interesting to read more about the conflicts between the different demense and it's people and other types of creatures the story is built around. The plot builds in a sensible, unpredictable and engaging pace. This looks like a good start for the Moonshadow books. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I have to agree with most of these reviews. I won't be following this series. I seriously disliked the heroine. She was a nut case. And the hero? Why didn't he tie her up and stash her somewhere with a guard to keep her safe - and keep her from getting away? No wonder he lost the war.

This would have been a solid four, maybe even five star book if it weren't for the heroine. She complains and argues constantly for no real reason. I'm not sure why romance authors seem to think there's something endearing about argumentative shrews.

not my type, no depth, loosely connected. I didn't care for it. Not the deep emotional stories I expect of Thea Harrison although it is for most ages leaving out the overly sexual escapades or language which was a deep improvement.

This is nowhere near as good as Dragon Bound. I'm struggling to go through it but it's soooo boring. Can't get into the main characters at all and Puck is the more interesting character. Don't think I'll be able to finish it.

Thea Harrison is one author who writes on a completely different (sub-par) level when she self-publishes. That doesn't say much about her sense of responsibility to her readers, the standard she sets for herself, her self-discipline or her sense of honesty. "Moonshadow" is the 1st book in a series that is self-published. I was so eagerly anticipating diving into this book, especially with all the great reviews. But as soon as I began reading, I realized this isn't the same writer as the one who writes the Elder Races series. In every way, this effort is lazy, sophomoric and empty-headed. She phoned this one in. It's hard to believe the same writer has produced books of such different levels of polish. Either she must rely on being pushed to a higher standard by her agent, editor and publisher when she's published by Berkeley, or else "Moonshadow" was a hastily tossed-off first draft that she didn't bother to work on, since she was her own boss. Quite frankly, I'm angry that I bought this book on the strength of her other work, and she proved herself unworthy of my trust.
Where do I begin to list the flaws of this piece of crap? The dialogue is ridiculous. The descriptions, hackneyed. The sex scenes, boring. The characters, cardboard cut-outs. I can't think of a single good thing to say about this self-published, amateurish, rush-to-the-bank "effort". I'm angry I wasted my time and money. Every move, motive and plot device was heavily broadcast way in advance. Every aspect of the writing was thin, shallow, poorly imagined and sketchily described. If she spent more than a week writing this, I'd be shocked. I can't imagine how so many readers gave this book such high reviews. It goes to show, reviews can't always be relied on. I kept on reading to the end despite rampant boredom, hoping Harrison would somehow redeem herself.
My opinion of this writer has undergone a complete turn-around. Before, I thought "Thea Harrison" guaranteed a good read. Now, I will approach every one of her books with huge caution and check to be sure it is not a self-published, greedy mess. What a bitter disappointment! I hate and loathe it when a favorite writer proves herself to be dishonest and dishonorable!

Sophie, a LAPD witch consultant, is on leave while recovering from gunshot wounds. She's an orphan but for convoluted reasons, she's given the chance to inherit an abandoned estate in the UK--there's just one catch. Thus far, nobody's been able to get into the house and it seems to have a bad history with people getting lost in it. Sophie's determined to get into it so she can inherit the land and annuity but she runs into trouble when she gets caught in the middle of a band of Fae warriors who want to use her for her magic.

I don't think i've read any of this author's other books but for some reason i thought this was going to be an urban fantasy. It's not; it's one of those formulaic band of warrior romances. It's not horrible for that type of book though so i gave it 3 stars.

I liked Sophie most of the time. She worked as a "consultant" to the police yet she's painted as a wounded veteran cop or something (how does a "consultant" even get shot on the job? It's not like they're the ones fighting crime). She's witty and a mouthy feminist...she doesn't like Nik's outdated "alpha" ways but i have to say, I really disliked the way she kept calling Nik an a-hole when he clearly wasn't (is the author trying to make her seem like an angry man-hater?). I also found it really annoying that she kept refusing to take $$$ for her work, or for Nik's whole crew renting her house even though she claimed to need it early on (she was out of work so this made no sense).

I initially found Nik interesting but he sort of seemed like he turned into a stereotype to me. He's a tired warrior desperate to help his queen and his people and he doesn't want to be attracted to Sophie blah blah blah. Neither of them wants to be attracted to each other which is admittedly more entertaining to watch than an instalove type story but i feel like the rest of the conflict going on with Nik's people was boring (this book took forever to finish). Apparently, this author has another series that may or may not be connected to this one so I guess this could be a reason why i didn't find it nearly as entertaining as everyone else did (still, it IS presented as the first book in a new series).

***4 ‘Thanks for asking, A$%hole’ Stars***

When I saw that Ms. Harrison was doing a spinoff of the Elder Races series my curiosity was peaked and though I’ve had my ups and downs with the books in the series, I’ve enjoyed them all. So I couldn’t help but jump at the chance to check out Moonshadow and I was not disappointed! It was sexy, funny and sweet with a good dose of action and a bit of mystery/suspense add to round it out and make it an enjoyable read.

I loved Nik and Sophie, even when they were bickering, I loved them! Nik has been fighting to get back to the Dark Fae court for decades and has, over time, become hard and cynical, he keeps trying for those who fought with him. Nikolas is the total large and in charge alpha male who expects his word to be law. In some cases this expectation is legitimate, in others not so much. And though his heart and soul have been battered and bruised he still holds on to hope. When he isn’t in ‘A$*shole’ mode, he’s sweet, considerate and sexy as h*ll.

Sophie is working at finding her feet after what should have should have been an easy job goes horribly wrong. Not only is she still recovering physically, but emotionally and mentally. As she works to come to terms with the fallout and decide what to do next, she stumbles upon a few opportunities that change her life forever. I loved Sophie. Strong, determined, impulsive, but with a generous and compassionate heart. She speaks her mind when it matters and has a backbone of steel.

I loved the dance that went on between Nikolas and Sophie. With two such strong personalities there was no way they wouldn’t get under each other’s skins and have a few *smirk* battles in order to make their points. And while I’m not typically a fan of couples who bicker a lot, I found Nik’s and Sophie’s battles funny and amusing because they weren’t trying to piss the other off, they were just being themselves and they actually were explaining their POV’s in a coherent manner. And they ended up learning quite a bit about each other through these battles of will. And when they weren’t bickering they were just as fun to be around and I loved how they respected what the other brought to the table. The chemistry between them was hot and I liked how their journey played out.

It took me a few chapters to get fully invested in Moonshadow, but when it hit I couldn’t put it down and wanted to know how everything would play out and I really liked the twists and turns in the storyline and was surprised by a few of those twists. I loved the supporting cast of characters, Robin and Gawain being my fav’s, but I’m definitely wanting to know more about Morgan and Rowan. So bring on the next book!

Every so often I am reminded how much I truly enjoy Thea Harrison. I have not loved every single one of the Elder Races books equally, but I absolutely adored this one. This is actually something of a spin off, set in the world of Elder Races but outside of the ongoing story line. So if you’ve never tried those books, this is a fantastic place to jump in.

The heroine is an American police consultant recovering from a shooting. Her entire future opens up when she learns she may be heir to a mysterious castle. All she has to do is figure out a way in. So Sophie travels across the pond, hoping to unlock the mystery and change her life.

That’s where she crosses paths with the sexy man she first encountered in a vision. Nikolas is one of a handful of Dark Fae Knights cut off from their homeworld. He is powerful, arrogant, and bossy. Totally wrong for Sophie, but impossible to resist.

It turns out Sophie’s new castle may be the key to Nik’s future. So they end up thrown together, as Sophie becomes a target for his enemies. They have to protect each other and work as a team to unearth the castle’s secrets. But it’s a dangerous job. And it’s made even more difficult by the fact that they can’t go five minutes without sniping at each other.

These two are like oil and water. And I loved it. Nik has absolutely no idea how to interact with an independent woman. She may not be as strong as he is, but she is resourceful and has her own gifts which cannot be denied. She may make bad choices in men, but she knows her worth and she stands up for herself, which I love.

The sexual tension between them is phenomenal. The payoffs were written to perfection. The love is kind of Insta, but there’s so much great stuff happening in the story it didn’t bother me the way it normally does. And the heroine is smart enough to recognize that they need to take a little more time before they make any permanent arrangements. So kudos for that.

There are some memorable side characters here too, like the puck who really has a pivotal role. I would also like to see more of Nick’s best friend and our villain, Morgan. I feel like there is more to him than meets the eye and I am excited to unwrap that mystery.

Basically, I just loved this book. It is funny and smart and sexy as hell. It’s got action and romance and great world building. The best PNR I have read this year. Can’t wait for the next installment.

Four and a half from me
If you have read and enjoyed the Elder Races books then this spin off series is a must read. No longer set in the US, the action has moved to the UK although as it heavily involves the Fae expect both the Light and the Dark courts to feature as things progress.
Ok essentially our story begins when Sophie is offered the opportunity of a lifetime and it's exactly what she needs. As a witch consultant with the police she has recently survived terrible injuries that haunt her. The chance to possibly put her natural skills to use and open up a mysterious mansion in the English countryside, not to mention discover things about her missing parents is too good to pass up. Yet what Sophie hadn't counted on was ending up slap bang in the middle of a war with the most annoying and overbearing commander trying to tell her what to do! Nikolas may be in charge of his unit but there's no way he's telling Sophie what to do . The sparks fly , the attraction they share is incandescent but with enemies quite literally banging on the door there's just not enough time for a relationship but what if their love is bigger than anything else?
I remember how the Fae were touched on in the Elder Races so it's wonderful to see the other side of them here. I had fun spotting someone who was introduced back in Pia Saves the Day so I'm hoping for even more delicious crossovers in the books to come. Sophie and Nik quite rightly dominate this story but the author introduces characters that I'm hoping she will revisit soon. There's definitely a couple of hunks teasing us but there's also a villain who unless I'm mistaken perhaps isn't as bad as he's painted but if he is to be redeemed I doubt it will be anytime soon. Oh and if you delight in her somewhat sweet and quirky characters ( Peanut anyone? ) then prepare to fall hard for Robin the Puck! So standby for fireworks as Sophie and Nik butt heads , prepare to feel right at home in the English countryside and get sucked into a whole new world by this wickedly talented author.

I have read Ms. Harrison before, but it had been a long time. Now, I wonder why I haven't read more. Sophie, the protagonist in this book, is a consultant for the LAPD who has been recently injured on the job and is on temporary medical leave. When she finds out she might inherit property in England if she can get in one of the dwellings on the property, she figures that is the best way to spend her time. On the way to the property, she finds a dog, an infuriating man she saw in one of her readings, and is in a deadly fight. Little does she know she has landed herself in the middle of a fight, one that might be the death of her. I found the heat, disagreements, arguing, love scenes, etc. between Sophie and Nik to be a very entertaining duel between two very stubborn people who are attracted to each other. Side characters, especially puck (oh, he was probably the best character I've met in a long time), really rounded out an action-packed story about the war between the Light Court and the Dark Court. It's been long enough since I have read any books in the Elder Races (shame, shame on me!!), I can't comment on how this book compares. But, after reading this, I have to remedy that. Ms. Harrison is a terrific writer, and this book shines with how good she is. I think everyone should pick up this book because I see a great series ahead if this book is any indication. Highly recommend!

Thea Harrison is f***ing BRILLIANT!

I don’t normally use cuss words in my reviews but I had to here. MOONSHADOW is a masterpiece full of excitement, danger, laughter, loyalty and steamy romance!

The story starts a little slow and you may want to put it aside, but don’t do it! The first time I tried reading the book, it couldn’t capture my interest so I set it aside for a whole month! I can’t believe how much time I wasted! Don’t do it! Don’t set it aside, keep reading! You will not be disappointed!

MOONSHADOW is a part of the Elder Races world but totally different. The characters are functional, yet totally extraordinary. The story building is out-of-this-world amazing! It’s magical! I absolutely LOVED it!

Let’s talk about Nikolas and Sophie. WOW! Both characters are meticulously crafted and just plain brilliant! They were just as amazing apart as they were together. Sophie is everything you hope for in a heroine. She’s tough, smart, too stubborn for her own good and funny as hell! I greatly admired her strength and her optimism. It never mattered that she was less powerful than many of the beings in this story, she was always on the frontlines doing what she could and fighting for what needed to be fought for.

Nikolas is the ideal hero, strong, protective, fiercely loyal and sexy as sin, but he’s so much more! I loved how honorable he was and that he constantly warred with himself, torn between saving his people and claiming happiness that’s long since denied him. Nothing nobler than that!

Nikolas and Sophie together was an explosion! If they weren’t fighting with each other, their passion was burning up the pages, engulfing all of us with them! It was such a hoot to read whenever they were together! There were also some wonderfully diverse secondary characters that made the story that much greater and chalked full of surprises!

MOONSHADOW is in a category all of its own. If you don’t want to read it for all the reasons I mentioned, then read it because it was written by an exceptional writer. Thea Harrison has grown leaps and bounds as an author and I’m just so dang proud of her!

I HIGHLY recommend MOONSHADOW and any books by Ms. Harrison!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Moonshadow, the first book in a new paranormal series about the Elder races, by Thea Harrison. I have loved all of her books, but I think Moonshadow has now become my favorite book that Thea Harrison has writtten. I loved all the characters(the good and the evil) as well as the story line. Sophie Ross, a witch consultant for the LAPD, is on sick leave after being horribly wounded during a shootout on the job. Sophie decides to take a chance and go to England to inherit an old manor house that has been abandoned for a long time, including the lands and trust fund that goes with it. The house is on a very magical plot of land where the last major battle between the Daoine Sidhe Knights of the Dark Court, who lost the battle, and Queen Isabeau of the Light Fae Court and her Wyr Hounds. This land had one of the largest crossover passageways leading to the Other Land of the Dark Court. Morgan, the most powerful human mage ever and the commander of Queen Isabeau's forces, was able to partially destroy the passageway during the battle. Now the Daoine Knights of the Dark Court are caught on this side of the passageway and have no way to go home to Lyonesse or to get reinforcements from there. The manor house has been built on top of the partially destroyed passageway. The manor is impenetrable and Sophie is the only one able to get into the house. Nikolas(Nik) Sevigny, the commander of the seven remaining knights of the Dark Court, is trying to keep his men alive and safe until they can find a way to return to the Dark Court. They are in constant danger from Morgan and the Hounds and are constantly on the run to stay away from the Hounds. Nik and Sophie's first encounter occurs in the inn where Sophie is spending the night before going to the manor in the morning. There meeting is like a combustion of lightning and thunder!!! Although neither of them want to be in a relationship. they can't stop their growing attraction to each other. Sophie offers the use of the manor house to Nik and his men as a place where they can rest and regain their strength for their continuing battle with the Queen and Morgan. Sophie has promised Nik that she will help him try to find a viable way through the broken passageways in the house . Hopefully they can find a way back to Lyonesse before it's to late for Nik and his men. Thea Harrison's characters are well developed and totally believable. Sophie is a beautiful, feisty, strong, courageous woman who doesn't take orders from anyone. She races into danger to help others with no thought of her own safety. Sophie is a powerful witch capable of making offensive and defensive spells to use against her enemies. Nikolas is a strong, handsome alpha male who will never give up on his fight to protect his men and to try to find a way for them to safely go home to Lyonesse . He is also a very powerful mage. Nik and Sophie's relationship is electrifying with sparks flying and the sexual tension between them getting stronger whenever they are together!! Thea Harrison has a "magical" ability of her own to paint pictures of her characters and the events happening in the story through her use of words alone. Moonshadow is a fast paced, action packed book with witches, powerful sidhes, knights , an evil queen , sword fighting ,danger, and magic!!! Will Nik and Sophie stay in their relationship? Will the knights be able to find a way back to Lyonesse? Will Morgan and the Hounds finally be able to destroy the last of the knights? I'm hoping that the other knights will get their own stories in the future, especially the loyal Gawain and the charming, beautiful Rowan. I loved this book and can't wait for the next book to find out what is going to happen to Nik, Sophie, Robin, and Nik's knights. I voluntarily received an ARC for an honest review. KMc

Moonshadow by Thea Harrison is the first book in her new Moonshadow trilogy, which does use her Elder Races theme. In Moonshadow, the story switches to England, with the focus on the Fae’s, both Dark and Light. Sophie Ross, our heroine, is a witch consultant for the LA police department. On leave from her job & suffering from constant nightmares due to being shot on assignment, Sophie decides to accept a quest that will take her to the U.K. Her quest: Enter a broken down mansion that has been empty for hundreds of years, with no one able to get in, even with a key.

Nik Sevigny is our hero, and a Daoine Sidhe knight from the Dark Court. Nik recognizes Sophie from a vision, and thinks she is the enemy. Nik has seen many of his warriors killed over the years, leaving only a select few, as they try to find a way to get back home to the Dark Court in Lyonesse. Queen Isabeau, of the Light Court, and her knight, Morgan had destroyed all the portals that would allow any access to Lyonesse. Nik has become difficult to deal with, trusting no one, especially trying desperately to keep his men alive. It will take Nik awhile to learn to trust Sophie and try to get her to use her witch/djinn powers to help them find the way home, and get help to defeat Isabeau and her vicious hounds.

Sophie is determined to enter the mansion, and if she is able to enter it (many before her have failed), she would then inherit it and receive a nice annuity for life. Both Sophie and Nik do not get along in the beginning, especially since he is surly and demanding, and she being very independent, causes lots of clashes and words. Their attraction for each other grows over a short time, but with Morgan on their trail, and Sophie’s life now in danger, they bond to help one another survive. I loved the addition of Robin, an injured puck (brownie), who Sophie saves and nurtures like her “pet” during this story. Whether a dog, monkey or a strange little boy, Robin was a great character. I also liked some of Nik’s warriors.

What follows is a non-stop action packed story that was not only tense at times, but also lots of fun. The romance between Sophie and Nik becomes hot and steamy, and I loved them together. They were both very strong, tough and independent heroes. Will Nik and his men get back to Lyonesse and the Dark Fae? Will Sophie allow herself to be part of Nik’s life in the Dark Court? Will they survive the onslaught by Queen isabeau?

Moonshadow was a wonderful addition to the Elder Races series, and I for one cannot wait for the second book in this trilogy. There was so much action, excitement, danger, intrigue, wonderful characters and a great couple. This story line had a bit of everything, from the Fae, Witches, Puck, and Djinn. I loved ever moment of this story.

I am a huge fan of Thea Harrison's Elder Races series and so far I've gobbled down all the books like candy (except the last full length one, which I'll remedy very soon). She is a master of world building and making a landscape appear in your mind. Add to that her sassy way of writing and I'm a goner.

Sophie, who is a witch consultant for the LAPD, is still recovering from gunshot wounds she received when a police operation went awry. When a stranger contacts her with an offer nobody could refuse she jumps at the chance: An inaccessible house in the UK plus the entailed land and a significant annuity will belong to her if she can gain access to said house.

Nikolas Sevigny's loyalty to his men is unshakable. Of the hundred he had only nine are left, the stranded Daoine Sidhe knights of the Dark Court. Cut off from his homeland he fights with every fiber to help bringing down the Queen of the Light Court and her trusted man Morgan.

Sophie and Nik meet under less than ideal circumstances. Two weeks prior while doing a reading she saw a vision of Nik attacking her. Only it didn't seem like a vision. It's only natural that now, being in the UK, her defenses are up and her distrust for this beautiful man is firmly in place. She is drawn into a war that isn't hers. With the house. that is almost like a fortress, she has a lot to offer to Nik and his men and he is ruthless enough to take it if helps his mission.

You know those heroes, the ones that are hard to love in the beginning...but when you start loving them, you go all in? Yep, Nikolas is one of those. He was such an a$shat in the beginning, I wanted to slap him into next week. The enlightenment came quickly though. He is a couple of hundred years old and in the last decades his sole focus was on getting himself and his men home. There was no room for niceties. Of course he bristles and gets his boxers in a twist when he meets this beautiful witch who keeps mouthing off at him.

Nik is everything you expect in an alpha male: overbearing, sometimes rude, commandeering, controlling, rough. But also loyal and gentle and caring.

Sophie is a woman with her own mind and she has no compunctions letting Nik know that he can shove his orders where the sun doesn't shine. She has a temper but once she and Nik get close you find her more often reigning it in and picking her battles. She has a protective side to her that makes Nik go batty because, dammit, he is the one giving orders! Sophie is also a crafty and creative witch, she's brave and kind and I loved how she took care of Robin, the puck.

Their bickering is hilarious and you get the feeling that they only argue to make up again with mind-blowing sex. Speaking of, Thea Harrison is known for some steamy scenes (I'll never forget Dragos' mating heat) so you can definitely expect major sexual tension throughout the book.

One thing I need to mention are the several inaccuracies I've encountered. I was surprised there were so many because a good editor and proofreader should have caught on and gotten rid of them. Only to name a few:

"Silver was a hard metal, and besides, solid silver bullets would be much more expensive."

- Silver is not a hard metal - in fact it is extremely soft

“An earl— an English earl?” “Yes.” “Does that make you titled as well?” Her knowledge of English titles was almost nonexistent. Kathryn shrugged. “It does. I’m a countess, but I’ve lived in the States for so long I never use it.

- the daughter of an Earl is never a countess, only the wife is.

- there were several mix ups with English and American terms. The heroine being American kept saying supper and crisps, the hero said ass although he had spent a long time in the UK.

With that being said, it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story which was tremendous and I can't wait to continue this series. This was an extremely well done introduction to this new story arc in the world of the Elder Races and I am really giddily awaiting Gawain's story.

Moonshadow, A Moonshadow Novel, Thea Harrison

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  romance, paranormal and fantasy

I read the early Elder Races books then somehow missed later ones, caught up in the morass of new books I lost track of them. Then saw this on Netgalley and jumped in, a trilogy, so a fantasy with an end in sight not years off ( I hope!) that sounded right up my street.
I love Thea’s writing style, succinct and easy to follow and yet not dumbed down as so many paranormal reads are. They suit lots of readers as evidenced by sales and they way they dominate lists, but I like that bit extra, more to think about.

I love the Fae involvement, and the link to the Elder Races. If you’ve not read any of those it won’t really matter, you can follow the story anyway, because the Fae side is stronger.
Great characters in Sophie and Nikolas, also his second – well, he feels like a Second anyway, Gawain, and his other men. Loved Robin, and the way he links up to known tales about the Fae and Puck/Hob. All these people felt real, I seemed to know them, get a sense of each character and they were perfect in the story. I hate getting characters that just feel they're added for padding, for a bit of sex, who don't feel they belong in the tale.
The magic side was believable, I hate when characters get new powers and when all looks impossible they somehow pull them up and have perfect control. Its not like that here, there are new things Sophie is learning, but mostly its all stuff she knows and has used many times, adapted to fit what she needs.
There's Fae and Elder Races here, humans, Hell hounds, magic and spells, runes and spelled silver, modern guns with special bullets and old time swords, along with bows and arrows. There's a bit of eveything here, could have been an unruly mish mash but its not, it works perfectly.

There’s the usual dangers in the story, and Sophie gets quickly pulled in to the war between Dark and Light Courts. It’s interesting that the Dark court, which I’d expect to be the “bad” side isn’t, and the Light court is the one at fault.
I love the parallel world connection, it fits my way of imagining how these things could be real, with a kind of time/space reality, where a thin field can allow one to move into another dimension.
Yeah... OK, I’ve never really grown up and to me stuff like that  * could * be real. I reckon science just hasn’t yet caught up :-) After all electricity, aeroplanes, telephones, vaccines, antibiotics etc must have seemed like magic, impossible to many people when they were new.
Then Sophie’s spells, as a witch she’s good at them, but she’s other talents too from her heritage and I suspect we’ll learn even more about her.
The romance, that worked well for me, insta lust but with added insta hate! Sophie and Nik are total opposites, he’s old fashioned hyper protective of the “little woman” as you’d expect from someone that old, and Sophie is a self reliant, make her own mind up character not used to being ordered around without reason, they’re a real oil-and-water mix but it works, the sparks really fly from both tempers and sexual tension.
I enjoy the way Thea balanced it so the romance felt real, but didn’t overtake the story, how the story caused the conflicts between them and brought them together.

I’m really looking forward to the next two books, a first book has such a hard job, setting scenes, plots and characters but Moonshadow does that perfectly. a really solid five star read.
Stars: Five, a fabulous start to the trilogy. A definite re-reader.

Moonshadow is the 1st book in Thea's spinoff series of the Elder Races and I absolutely loved it. I was a little worried about a spin-off series after all The Elder Races is one of my favorite series and Dragon Bound remains one of my all-time favorite books ever. I worried this book wouldn't live up to the expectations of all the characters I've come to know and love in The Elder Races but I shouldn't have worried at all. This book introduced new but wonderfully complex and entertaining characters. I also loved that only one minor character from The Elder Races was mentioned in this book and so if you are starting as a new reader to Thea Harrison you didn't miss anything by not reading The Elder Races books (except of course a fabulous series that you should definitely read)!

Moonshadow takes place in the UK and the characters that we spend the most time with in this book are witches, Light and Dark Fae, Djinn and Wyr. In this world these characters along with Nightkind and Demonkind all live right alongside humans and their existence is out in the open. This book centers around Sophie Ross who is a witch and a little bit of something else. She's a consultant with the LAPD but on leave recovering from being shot three times while working a case. She travels to the UK where she meets Nikolas Sevigny who is the Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court. Nik and his few remaining knights are battling the Queen of the Light Court and trying to find a way back home. They were cut off from Lyonesse, their home, when the crossover passage was shattered. Nik and Sophie first meet is contentious to say the least as Nik magically attacks Sophie.

Nik is an interesting character and definitely an old-fashioned, alpha jerk when we first meet him. He has been alone for a very long time and many of his knights have died over the years. Other than his few remaining "brothers" he doesn't trust anyone and he hasn't really "moved into current time thinking." He sees Sophie as someone he can use to help in the battle between the dark and light courts. To be fair he does try to dissuade her from getting involved and lets her know up front just how dangerous the situation is. However, he is quick to accept her help when she offers. Although I understood Nik and his actions he wasn't always the most lovable hero I've read about although in the end I liked him.

Sophie was an amazing heroine and is one of my favorites. She is very tough but not in a bad-ass kind of way. She has a lot of internal strength and although she has some powerful spells she uses I wouldn't consider her a warrior. She is kind and compassionate and yet definitely not a pushover. She stands up for herself in every situation and does what she thinks is right. No matter how bad things get she picks herself up, dusts off and keeps going. I loved her relationship with a couple of the secondary characters and it really helped the reader see all the sides to Sophie.

Nik and Sophie's relationship was a enemies to lovers story. They fought and bickered and there was a lot of chemistry in their push/pull relationship. I loved how they slowly started to recognize traits in each other that they respected and admired and learned to work together as they fought to help Nik's group. I loved the witty banter between the two and I absolutely felt and believed the chemistry between them. Nik grows throughout this book and starts to accept that Sophie is an independent woman and gives her the respect she's due although I would have liked him to soften just a touch more before the end of the book. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed their relationship.

The secondary characters were a wonderful addition to the story. I loved several of them and look forward to their stories. I also found the twist of Morgan Le Faye as a man and the antagonist in this book compelling. There were some hints about his character throughout the book that intrigued me and I hope that we get his book one day.

Although this book had a great romance and really well developed, complex and likable characters it had an equally well thought out and complex plot. It was full of action, danger, intrigue, betrayal and suspense. This book brought Sophie and Nik's story to a happy conclusion but it left the overall plot open for further books in this spin-off series. It's an amazing book with fantastic world building that you don't want to miss.

A copy of this book was provided to me by the author with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.

This spin-off from the Elder Races series moves the action over the ocean to the UK, with a whole new set of characters and a conflict between the Dark and Light Courts. I really appreciate how much Thea Harrison has tried to make it feel like these characters are actually in the UK. The details aren’t always right, but the effort has been made, and the use of supermarket bags from Tesco and Sainsbury’s made me happier than they probably should have done.

The romance here is definitely one of opposites, and they don’t really attract – at least not at first. Sophie is fiercely independent, having been alone for a long time and very used to looking after herself. She’s smart and competent and definitely isn’t going to be bossed around by anyone. Which of course brings her into direct conflict with Nikolas, who has survived as long as he has by bossing about everyone one around him. They snipe and snarl at each other throughout, but I love how even this somehow turned into affection between them in time.

Although it does take time. They’re so opposed at first that I wondered how they could ever possibly find common ground. Their attraction and chemistry help a lot, but mostly it’s Sophie’s compassion and Nik’s protective nature that brings them together. Nik might have lost much of his softness over the years, but his attempts to do good and protect his brothers-in-arms provides ample reason for his actions – leaving Sophie helpless to resist.

The plot largely centers around the need for Nik and his friends to get home and the mysterious house that no one has been able to access for centuries. I loved the idea of that house and spent a lot of the read impatient for them to shut up and get inside. I probably would have been happy with an entire book dedicated to exploring the place and its potential mysteries, so I was a little sad when that didn’t happen. However, what I got instead was a bit of siege warfare, a lot of heat and a some soul-searching, which was just as good.

I was occasionally a little confused, though. For instance, I wasn’t sure how long Nik and his fellows had been cut off from Lyonesse. The house is centuries old, but someone mentions that they’ve been away from home for decades. There also seemed to be some confusion about how many men were about at some points – one moment nine, the next five. I was reading an early copy, so hopefully if that was a continuity error it’s been sorted.

Some of the language was also a bit off at times. Nik calls Sophie a ‘mouthy broad’, which really jarred me. I also would have expected a bit more discomfort from Sophie about driving through country lanes. I don’t know the area in the book all that well, but most English countryside devolves to narrow, single track lanes when it gets isolated. Also, was that Mini an original Mini or a new one, because there is a significant size difference.

All of which are minor picks at best, and most of which I could ignore. Particularly when Robin was on the scene. I really loved Robin. He very nearly stole the whole book for me. If Nik and Sophie hadn’t turned into such a formidable team, he probably would have. However, the main two just sneaked it, particularly with everything at the end.

Filled with humor and action, romance and heat, mystery and complications, this was a great start to this new series. The characters are compelling, the magic is as wonderful as always and I was left so very curious about so many things – particularly Sophie’s heritage. In all, I thoroughly enjoyed this one and can’t wait to see where it all heads next.

Wow! Awesome book and a great start to a new series. Thea Harrison does not disappoint. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

Sophie Ross is very independent and resourceful. She has had to depend on herself since she was young and is reluctant to give up any part of her control if it means depending on someone else. As a witch consultant for the LAPD, Sophie is no stranger to magic. When a consultation goes wrong and Sophie is shot multiple times, she is more careful of where and what she does. Sophie’s sense of safety is at a low. When she was given the opportunity to get away from LA to Scotland, on the promise of inheriting a piece of property and a house, Sophie was very glad to get away. The catch of owing the property in Scotland is to unlock and enter the house and provide proof of this, and she gets everything lock stock and barrel.

Nikolas is a High Commander of the Daoine Sidhe knights of the Dark Fae court. He and a few of his knights are trapped on the Earth side of the magic passageway, far his home in Lyonesse after the passageway was destroyed in a bloody and brutal battle with Isabeau, Queen of the Light Fae Court and her army. He is desperate to find a way back home and is looking at any opportunity that comes up to help him find the way.

Sophie’s introduction to Nikolas was interesting. Since being shot, Sophie doesn’t leave home without reading her runes. This is her way of anticipating anything that may come at her while she’s away from home. As she threw her runes, a flow of magic and the outline of a man with his back to her appears. When he turns, and sees her, he reacts instantly by throwing a flash of power at her. Before it hits, Sophie scatters her runes and the vision disappears. This incident threw her, but she put it aside and went about her day.

The opportunity for Sophie to go to Scotland could not have come at a better time. On arriving in Scotland embarks on an adventure that she didn’t anticipate. She adopts or is adopted by a bedraggled dog that turns out to be a puck, named Robin. She meets up with Nikolas, the man who threw the hateful magic at her, and it is confirmed that he is not a nice man. Their personalities clash with their first face to face meeting but in no time, it's apparent that they need each other's particular set of skills to work together. He needs her help to fix the passageways and a place for his warriors to rest and she needs him to help her with the house and its unstable magic. Sophie is softhearted and hates to see people suffer. So she will do everything in her power (literally) to help Nikolas and his warriors go home.

This story was great and I savored every word. The dialogue was snappy and funny, especially the “nope GIFs” and the interactions between Sophie and Nikolas and his warriors….very refreshing. I also loved the practicality of stockpiling. I don't think I have ever read a book where this was done so thoroughly. The only con I have is that there wasn’t a lot of background information about Sophie’s childhood. You know that she was adopted and there were hints that her childhood was not great, but no details on that and how it helped shape who she is. Maybe more of this will come in the other books in the series.

Aside from this, the book was a great read and I can’t wait to read more about these characters and hopefully, Gawain’s story. I also would love to see the other characters from the Elder Race make an appearance...won't turn down a visit from Dragos or Pia or even Peanut.

: 4.5 stars--MOONSHADOW is the first installment in Thea Harrison’s MOONSHADOW paranormal romance series focusing on a hybrid species of triple threat creatures with the blood of three different races including the Wyr and the Fae. MOONSHADOW is a spin off from Thea’s Elder Races series but you do not have to have read the original series to follow. This is twenty nine year old witch, LAPD consultant Sophie Ross, and Daoine Sidhe Knight of the Dark Court Nikolas Sevigny’s story line.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Sophie and Nik) MOONSHADOW follows Sophie Ross as she embarks on a journey to uncover the truth, and straddles a timeline between worlds in the land of her ancestors in the UK. Sophie knows nothing about her heritage -the who, what or why-and when a stranger offers Sophie a chance to seek the answers to her questions, our heroine heads to the UK where the Knights of the Dark Court become the family she has always imagined. Enter Daoine Sidhe knight Nikols Sevigny- the man with whom Sophie will fall in love. What ensues is the search for the portal that leads back to Nikolas’s homeland, and the struggle to survive against more than one enemy of the Dark Court.

Nikolas Sevigny and his brethren have been trapped on this side of the crossover passageway for hundreds of years. In their quest to return to Lyonesse, most of the Knights have perished or left for other places but Nik and his few remaining warriors continue to battle and stay ahead of the evil Queen Isabeau of the Light Court, her Hounds, and their captain Morgan le Fae. Sophie’s appearance will coincide with the Hounds reappearance, and the Knights renew their quest for the passageway home.

The relationship between Sophie and Nik is fraught with the push and pull of attraction. Nik’s Wyr DNA knows Sophie is their mate but Nik’s lifestyle isn’t conducive to love or a relationship that could end with the death of a mate. Sophie is a woman who offers to help the Knights in their quest to return home, and is continuously pushed away by the man that she loves. The $ex scenes are intimate, provocative and intense.

We are introduced to a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Nikolas’s fellow warriors, as well as Robin- a little shapeshifting imp (or puck) whose presence will be familiar to followers of Alexandra Ivy’s playful and heartbreaking gargoyle Levet. The requisite evil comes in many forms including captain of the Hounds Morgan Le Fae, Queen Isabeau of the Light Court, and someone close to the Knights of the Dark Court.

MOONSHADOW is a wonderful story of magic; where fantasy meets reality; where timelines and otherworlds collide. The premise is imaginative and wondrous; the characters are passionate and dynamic; the romance is fated and inspired. Thea Harrison’s word of the Moonshadow is a brilliant new series with engaging characters and a decadent story line.

“I wish to know what you are doing here,” he whispered to the unknown woman, drumming his fingers on the road. “And what you might have to do with a stray puck and an enemy Queen.”

Moonshadow by Thea Harrison is a fantastic start to this Elder Races spin-off series. Originally, Moonshadow was to be the tenth installment in the author’s Elder Races series, but, after careful consideration, Thea decided to make it a spin-off trilogy instead. The Moonshadow trilogy is still set in the Elder Races world, but while the original Elder Races stories deal with the demesnes in the US, the Moonshadow trilogy will be dealing with the demesnes in the UK. Even so, Elder Races fans will be glad to know there will be some crossover and a few familiar characters from the Elder Races series will be making appearances in the Moonshadow trilogy. However, on the flip side, newbies to Thea’s books will be pleased to know that the Moonshadow series can be fully enjoyed on its own without prior knowledge of the previous Elder Races books. So, Moonshadow is a win-win for fans and newbies alike.

This is the story of LAPD witch consultant Sophie Ross and Nikolas Sevigny, a stranded Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court. I was drawn into this story and its characters from the very beginning as we first meet Sophie on medical leave from LAPD. She has been contacted by a mysterious Dr. Kathryn Shaw who makes Sophie an offer she cannot refuse. If Sophie can use her natural skills to gain entrance into a mysterious magical mansion located in the English countryside, the mansion will become hers along with an associated endowment. However, Sophie has an inauspicious start as she journeys towards her new possible digs: her rental car dies, she rescues an abused dog – and unwittingly becomes embroiled in a centuries-old Fae war.

The Daoine Sidhe knights of the Dark Court are Fae, but not fully Fae. They are called ‘abominations’ by the Fae of the Light Court because they have the blood of three different races flowing through their veins. They are the good guys in this book – a turnabout as I have normally thought of the Light as being the nice fae. Our hero, Nikolas, is part leopard, knight and prince. In addition, he is annoying and overbearing with an entitled attitude. Of course, Sophie, being an independent, clever, courageous woman used to surviving on her own, doesn’t take well to Nikolas telling her what to do. He thinks she’s suicidal. She thinks he’s an a**hole. Sparks fly. Oh, did I mention that Sophie, besides being a talented witch, also has some Djinn blood? There’s many more surprises in store for readers within these pages.

There are multiple supporting characters including Nikolas’ brother knights – all hunks who hopefully will be found deserving of a story in the future. I would be remiss if I did not mention sweet, audacious and quirky Robin the Puck, who takes on various forms in this tale – his plight pulled at my heartstrings.

You should be forewarned that all of Thea’s books – including Moonshadow - are obsession-inducing. Moonshadow keeps the adrenaline flowing with plenty of paranormal, heat, adventure, intrigue, romance, humor and danger. Moonshadow is a must-read for fans of the Elder Races. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal urban fantasy romances.

I absolutely love Thea Harrison! I pre-order all her books and always read them immediately, have yet to be disappointed.

I'll be very honest from the start, I'm always a little dubious about starting any of her new releases that aren't centred around Dragos and Pia. I don't know why as I'm never disappointed, I think it's just because I adore them so much.

I certainly wasn't disappointed this time. I loved Sophie and Nikolas from the start. Sophie is recovering slowly from her work related injuries, the opportunity arises to escape for awhile and she jumps at the chance.

She meets Nikolas and from there life just gets more and more interesting and decidedly more dangerous. The book blurb gives you all you need to know about the actual storyline. To add to that it's a really rich story, I really enjoyed finding out the history between the Light and Dark Courts, there's certainly some interesting times ahead in that battle.

The verbal sparring between Sophie and Nikolas was fantastic. I loved seeing how their relationship developed, it was so much more of a journey for Nikolas than Sophie, was very enjoyable to read, I laughed a lot.

Just incase anyone is wondering, Nikolas is hot! Alpha to the core, comes across as seriously domineering at times but with everything he's been through it's no wonder it takes someone special to break down his walls. Sophie doesn't give him an inch most of the time and I loved that about her, she knew just how much to push him and when to back off a little. Her sass along with her bravery really was her best quality. The sex scenes were intense, really showed the connection these two had even if they didn't at the time.

I loved Puck, his own story was almost as interesting as the main one, I really hope we don't have to wait too long for more of him.

This is definitely a step to the side from the main storylines we've had so far, don't let that put you off though. It's opened up a whole new story arc and I'm really hoping we get to carry on with the overall plot. We definitely need to find out how this story ends for the Dark Court as a whole.

It a brilliant addition to the Elder World.

I can say, with all sincerity, that I adore the complexity of the world of the Elder Races. This book adds even more dimension to the already sprawling mythology. From the new locations to the fantastic simmering tension between the Dark and Light courts, the world has expanded exponentially and I've fallen in love with it all over again. (Not hard to do, to be honest, since I end up doing a full series reread at least once a year, BUT STILL!)

So. Sophie and Nikolas. To say they don't hit it off right away might be a tiny understatement. Sophie's still a little punchy from the shooting incident that left her floundering and Nikolas has been living in solitude with the weight of his people's plight on his shoulders for so long he's almost forgotten how to trust. I say "almost" because he does have the other knights who are fighting alongside him, but the circumstances behind why it's dangerous for them to gather is wearing them thin. Throw in how drastically his numbers have dwindled and how his homeland is trembling on the brink of destruction and the guy has a lot on his plate.

Yeah. Sophie and Nikolas don't exactly see eye to eye in their first encounter. Or their second. Let's just say that they both have some deep seated beliefs and they'll go all in when they're needed and leave it at that.

Their verbal sparring is pretty spectacular, though.

Onto Sophie. I felt for the lady. Her past is a mystery, her future is uncertain, and when she crosses paths with Nikolas and his knights, she can't turn away. Throw in a creature who desperately needs her help and the lady is suddenly up to her eyeballs in the conflict between the Dark Court and the Light Court without meaning to be.

I seriously adored this book. From Nikolas's blended ancestry to Sophie's unexpected skills to the fervor their group throws themselves into when unexpected pathways are discovered, I am smitten. I've loved the Elder Races series since I first picked up book 1 and it hasn't waned a lick since. *draws sparkly hearts around it all*

I loved Thea Harrison’s Elder Races series and while this book is a spin-off to that series, you don’t need to have read it to read and enjoy this book. Thea weaves humor, suspense, and strong sexual tension into all of her books seamlessly, creating strong characters and fast paced plots with layers that I enjoy reading over and over.

In Moonshadow, Sophie is a paranormal witch consultant with the police department, focusing on magical crimes. After a bust gone wrong, she is injured and on leave, trying to figure out what to do with the rest of her life (and dealing with PTSD), when she is contacted about an inheritance of an estate in England. Not knowing her past, she jumps at the chance to learn about her parents and to find a purpose in her life.

On her journey, she meets a Daoine Sidhe Knight of the Dark Court, in exile and desperately trying to get back to his court and save his people. Nikolas has been fighting for centuries with his fellow knights, watching their numbers dwindle as the Light Court pick them off and feeling the despair and the way to the Dark Court has been cut off. Sensing Sophie’s estate might be a route to their homeland and Sophie herself a tool to help them in their fight, he allies himself with her in his battle even as he fights against the sexual attraction he has for her.

Sophie is a strong woman who resists being used as a pawn in anyone’s game, even as she sympathizes with Nikolas and his fellow knights’ plight. She agrees to help but refuses to be used or manipulated, even as her own feelings arise for the steadfast knight.

Amidst battles and chases and betrayals, Nikolas and Sophie battle the Light Court, each other and themselves in their struggle for who they are and who they want to be in their world.

I loved the darker tone of this book. There was humor in it but the overall tone of the story was edgier and darker due to the subject matter. The characters were deep and flawed but well -rounded. The development of the story flowed great, although the beginning took a little while to get going. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the ending made my heart skip a beat. I loved it and can’t wait for more books in the series!

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

No one writes magical nerdery better than Thea Harrison. Reminiscent of Rune and Carling tumbling through time, MOONSHADOW's heroine, Sophie faces an age old problem with a mix of modern problem solving and magic. While she makes huge magical strides, her explanations strike the perfect balance between realism and fantasy.

I've always enjoyed Harrison's centuries old alpha males running into modern women, and Sophie and Nikolas are no exception. While Sophie's big brain chews on each new situation, Nikolas's experiences make him guarded, grumpy, and suspicious. The sparks between Nikolas and Sophie aren't all sexual chemistry, as both of their tempers fire frequently and freely. I found their arguments exhausting at times, but enjoyed both characters, and the story itself, enough to enjoy moving forward.

From helping an abused dog to thinking on her feet, Sophie may be one of my favorite Harrison heroines. Nikolas has reason to be as suspicious and angry as he is (possibly even more so), but it doesn't make for a charming start for these two. The road to happily ever after in MOONSHADOW is bumpy and grumpy, but a hell of a ride.

Sexual Content: Sex scenes.

What a fabulous debut into a new spin off series from Author Thea Harrison.

WOW!! This spin off series is a must read. I love the Elder Races books, but here we up our game. We go from the US to the UK and dig deeper into the Light and Dark Fae courts. You don’t have to have read the Elder Races series to enjoy this passionate adventure. It’s a whole new experience.

Moonshadow is intense, action-packed, and full of memorable and magnificent characters. It’s suspenseful, powerful, and cruel. The story moves quickly, sucks you in, and is well balanced with the right amount of humor, passion, and love. I couldn’t put the book down.

Nikolas and Sophie dominate the story, but we are introduces to a extraordinary cast of characters that I’m looking forward to revisiting. What got me hooked and going was the powerful vision Sophie has of a powerful mysterious paranormal man at the start.

I enjoyed how the author gives you little tidbits about Sophie here and their throughout the story. I also liked how Sophie and Nikolas butted heads. They have this connection that works, even with all the head butting, and once they give in, oh boy, do the sparks fly.

I am in love with this new series where we move to the English countryside, dive into new characters, and a whole new world. Moonshadow was an unforgettable adventure and a delightful read. I can’t wait for the next installment. This is Thea Harrison at her best; fans will be pleased and new ones will be made.

This is an Elder Races spin-off book that takes place in the U.K. Ms. Harrison is one of my all time favorite authors. Her imagery delights and inspires her readers. I always feel as if I am right there in the moment as everything is happening. In this particular story we have Sophie Ross, from the U.S., who works as a consultant for the LAPD. She is a half-human/djinn and witch and Nikolas Sevigny a Dark Fae, Elven and Wyr. This makes for an interesting combination. Sophie is a different character, though I admired her strength and the ability that she can take care of herself, it just seemed to me she wavered back and forth too much for my liking. As far as Nik, he is the commander of the Dark Fae army which has dwindled down to a few remaining 8 when they got trapped on Earth's side and separated from their home, Lyonesse. Sophie & Nik first meet when she is scrying, then the next time is 2 weeks later when she arrives in the U.K. and she goes about protecting a dog, which turns out to be a puck, better known as, Robin. I loved Robin so much and hope to see him in future books. He was wonderful.
Nik & Sophie do fall for each other and as usual, it is scorching hot. The only sad thing for me is that they end up snapping at each constantly throughout the book, which to say the least, was exhausting. Moonshadow is full of action, betrayal, suspense, a great amount of hilarious moments and love. I must admit that though I liked this read, it is not my favorite. Nik and Sophie's relationship ends in an HFN. Looking forward to the next in this enchanting series.

Sophie Ross was a witch consultant with the LAPD. While working she was shot three times and is struggling with her injury and nightmares. Before a meeting with a stranger to receive information about her background and childhood, Sophie ‘throws’ her Nordic runes and sees a dark powerful man, who sees her in return. She travels to England to find out more about a legacy estate. This is the start of a far reaching adventure.
Nikolas Sevigny is a Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court. He and his fellow knights have been closed off from their lands for hundreds of years by a war with the Light Court Queen Isabeau and hersorcerer, Morgan. Nikolas is the man that Sophie ‘saw’ in her vision when she threw her runes. He in turn saw her. They cannot stop thinking of each other.
To claim her legacy estate, Sophie must enter and provide a proof positive photo that she entered and the estate. This land sits on a pocket of enchanted land that was once a way for people of the Dark Fae Court to enter their lands. Nikolas wants to help for his own reasons and Sophie wants a place to call home, the annuity it provides and answers to her background and childhood.
If you like the Elder Races books, you will love this one too! We move from the ‘New World’ to England for this new series. We have new characters to fall in love with and to wonder about. Robin is a very intriguing new character. Nikolas is a Dark Fae warrior that simply wants to go home. Sophie is a strong modern woman.
I am excited for this new direction from Thea Harrison.

The new spin-off series of the Elder Races starts off with one witch who has inherited a 5-acre estate in England (if she can get inside the manor house) and a war-hardened warrior of the Dark Court whose only goal is the get the remaining few of his warriors back home. He doesn't have time for love, especially of a smart-mouthed courageous witch he can't seem to stop touching. She can't stand his archaic bossy nature and his tendency to give orders rather than to simply ask her for something, but she can't keep her hands off him either. As they fight against the Light Court, solve the mystery of the cursed manor house, and discover whether within its walls there might be passageway back to his home, they come together in explosive fashion. When they aren't fighting with each other, they are kissing each other. He tells her they have no future in one breath, and in the next he is telling her he loves her but shouldn't. She fights alongside him, loving him, and knowing full well they have no future. Their story was entertaining and passionate. I loved their dialogue, especially hers. Her lines were hilarious and The Harrison wrote her dialogue really well. The character comes through really clearly through her dialogue. I liked how she was a strong independent woman who gave Nikolas hell while they fell in love and in the end how she held her ground until he asked her to marry him was a perfect way to end the story. I look forward to book 2.

MOONSHADOW had all the great things I've grown to love about the main Elder Races books. The rich world behind these books is simply amazing, and I'm practically giddy at the limitless possibilities this new spin off has opened up. With a whole new race and otherland, a new nemesis, and cast of characters I'm utterly delighted at the new path these books are taking.

Hands down without a doubt, enemies to lovers is by far my favorite trope and MOONSHADOW had this in spades. There's just something so very delicious about a hero and heroine completely at odds with each other. Sure Sophie and Nik aren't technically enemies in the truest sense, but as they couldn't stand one another at the start and they bicker nonstop (well other than during the parts that they couldn't keep their hands off each other), that trope holds true in this case. I can't tell you how many times I giggled out loud at some of the incredibly outlandish things that Sophie would say to him. And of course he gave her a run for her money as well. Even as they slowly became a couple of sorts, that combativeness between them only lessened. I'm a word, this couple together were simply, delightfully fun.

What can I say? MOONSHADOW was simply fantastic. I loved every single moment of this book and am so glad Thea is continuing this phenomenal world in this spin off series. I can't wait to see what's in store next. 1-click this one right now! You won't regret it!

Moonshadow was darker and more complex in its execution than Harrison’s previous books. Don’t worry. There was a romance and it’s concluded within the book. But Sophie and Nickolas’s relationship came across as side trip rather than the destination. I wouldn’t go as far to say they were an afterthought. Their relationship seems fully developed and in character. But I felt the emphasis wasn’t so much on them but on them and the problem of the world. This could be me trying to find fault when there really wasn’t anything else to complain about! :)

I do believe Harrison is building to something bigger. This book felt like the kickoff to a larger problem/puzzle involving Isabeau and possibly involving Morgan. A character I’m very much intrigued by. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? What role will he play in future books? (Really, what is his deal? I MUST KNOW!)

My expectation was that this spinoff series would be filled with more of the snark and larger than life characters in previous books. Or Dragon Bound 2.0. While both were present, it wasn’t as large a presence. I’ll admit in the beginning I was disappointed. However, once I adjusted my thinking, I was excited for the change. If anything having the change showed me the author isn’t hoping to settle for a career of the same and is instead growing and wanting the reader to grow as well.

New readers to Harrison will find a whole new world to explore. This book can be read without having read any of the other Elder Races novels. Old school lovers will find something fresh to sink their teeth into. Harrison is still one of my auto-buy authors and this book hasn’t changed my mind.

I was given this ARC in return for an honest review. Moonshadow is book 1 in the new series Moonshadow. This was an excellent story. I really enjoyed reading it and couldn't put it down till I reached the end of the book. I can't wait for the next installment to this series.
Moonshadow is the story of Sophie Rose and Nikolas Sevigny. Sophie is a witch without any memories of her past and Nikolas is a Daoine Sidhe Knight who was barred from his homeland. Sophie was injured and is now in search for answers to her past and where she comes from.
Sophie gets some clues to her past and goes to find out where they lead her. During her journey she runs into Nikolas and knows from the start that he isn't human, but that he is very powerful. Nikolas just sees her as a way to get home.
Between the fighting and the friendly moments you realize that there is a kind of love/hate relationship going on between these two. The only thing that you figure out right off is that Sophie has already falling in love with Nikolas, but has Nikolas fallen in love with Sophie?
To find out go grab your copy of Moonshadow.
I give Moonshadow 5 stars and would recommend this series to anyone who loved the Elder series and are into paranormals. I am excited to find out more about the characters we meet in Moonshadow.

Finally. The books I have been waiting for by Thea Harrison.

I stopped reading her original series with Serpent's Kiss (you can read my review of that book to read why).

I decided to give Moonshadow a chance though, because I genuinely do like her writing and the world.

Well, it was a great choice. In Moonshadow we have a wonderful heroine in Sophie who DOES NOT NEED RESCUING. In fact, she rescues our hero in more than one way.

Sophie made me laugh with her sarcasm and cry with the goodness of her heart. I loved how she handled the sheer amount of crap that was thrown her way and I especially loved how she handled Nikolas and his overbearing arrogance. And I love that she didn't diminish Nikolas with her strength. She complimented it.

This was a great start to a new series and I am now looking forward to the next installments. Hopefully it will be filled with equally strong heroines that can go toe to toe with the strong heros that Ms. Harrison writes and forge true partnerships with them.

Sophie, a survivor with no knowledge of her birth family, has physical injuries and a future that's dependent on her magical abilities. Nikolas, the Commander of the Dark Fae forces, has survived countless battles but lost his decency and humanity in the process. They collide in a vision, then meet in person weeks later under less than ideal circumstances. Throw in a lost puck, malevalent werewolves, and a crazy house that's not entirely in this dimension and you have the basis for "Moonshadow".

Despite sometimes dire happenings, the humor throughout kept me tearing up in laughter. Sophie's inner monologue is hysterical. Her insights about Nik and his lost knights are beautiful and heartbreaking. It's easy to delight in Sophie and Nik, but I think I fell in love with all the lost knights. The blurb tells us this is a planned trilogy and I can only hope we'll see more of Gawain and the other knights in future stories.

While this is a spin-off of the Elder Races series, no prior knowledge of that series is needed.

I absolutely loved MOONSHADOW! This is the first book in a new Trilogy set in Thea Harrison's Elder Races World. You don't need to read the Elder Races Series before starting this one though. I'm so excited about this new series! It's the same feelings I had after I read DRAGON BOUND. You want to tell all your friends to read it and then re-read the book immediately because you're jealous they're reading it for the first time. I loved Sophie and Nikolas together. MOONSHADOW was unique and exciting with smoking hot romance. I couldn't put it down and can't wait to see who the next book features. I want stories for a couple of the guys. Ack! I can't wait! I highly recommend this exciting new paranormal series. I'm hooked and addicted already.

I have always enjoyed the elder races series and was thrilled to find out that there was going to be a spinoff series. I was not disappointed. The characters were still well written and the magic remained. This is set in the United Kingdom instead of the US. The heroine is Sophie a magic user from the US who comes to England for an inheritance. She meets a knight of the Dark Fae court Nicholas. Nicholas has been trying to find a way back to his homeland in another dimension but the queen of the Light Court Isabelle is trying to destroy Nicholas and his knights with her hounds.
At first Nicholas wants to use Sophie's powers but finds himself attracted to her even though their personalities clash. This is a great start to a new series because the battles for the next books are set up. Also we are introduced to other characters whose stories I am anxiously awaiting. If you enjoy magic and suspense as well as romance you will love this book.

I have loved Thea Harrison's Elder Races Series since the very first book I picked up - Dragon Bound. I have come to expect complex and well developed characters, action and excitement, beautiful emotion, and a constantly evolving world. Moonshadow, the latest in the world of the Elder Races and first in a related series, has surpassed all my expectations. It is amazing. Nikolas and Sophie will go down as another favorite pair created by Thea. The story is fast paced and completely immersive. I found myself unable to put the book down and decided to scrap all my plans for Sunday and enjoy just a lazy day reading a wonderful book. I'm so glad I did! The world of the Elder Races just keeps getting better and more complex. And I love the linked story elements that travel throughout the books (Morgan plays a greater role in this book). If you are a fan of Thea Harrison's then you will not be disappointed. And if you're not, start here!

This new chapter in the world of the Elder Race is a wonderful pick-up of the breadcrumbs from Shadow's End about the Elder Races in the United Kingdom. It's a fresh look at a world that is already rich and vibrant with interesting characters and life. With this new landscape we get to see how the Elder-half lives across the pond. From the very beginning, it's obvious that things aren't anywhere near the same as the US demesnes.

Thea Harrison starts a new trilogy in the world of the Elder Races. Meet Sophie, “mostly” human witch with a blank slate for a past and Nikolas Sevigny is a broody Daoine Sidhe knight trying to protect himself and his men and find a way back home before the enemy Queen wipes them out. They meet under violent circumstances and seriously get off on the wrong foot. Nikolas has no give in him and Sophie doesn’t back down, not even from a fight. The conflict between them is as tangible as the chemistry. But as they learn about each other they see that they may just be exactly what the other needs. Harrison does not disappoint with this latest offering hitting all the high points for a steamy, witty, action-filled story.

Thea Harrison has an unmatched and unique way of approaching both her heroes and heroines that just makes you fall into their world, their problems, and actively root for them to best the challenges they face. I've never read a heroine i didn't like (even when they were driving me crazy with their decisions) or a hero who I didn't covet as a boyfriend (even when they're being bossy as all get out). Harrison doesn't rely on the "love wins" motto to resolve her stories her couples not only dig in to face danger, betrayal, and epic-level magic users intent on their destruction. Each pair digs in to face their fears, wants, needs, desires and ultimately each other.

I'm all in and ready to see what this expanded world brings. There's a whole host of new possibilities on the horizon and I can barely contain my excitement. I also feel the need to learn how to make magic bullets...

I like this book so much it's my December e-book pick in my local indie bookstore Mysterious Galaxy

A wonderful paranormal romance with a kickass magical heroine and Sidhe hero who has to adjust to love and a strong woman.

The world building is wonderful and the magic the heroine uses is clever and interesting.

We are in the same world as the Elder Races but we don't see the characters we know so well, but that is okay because we get a great cast of brothers in arms.

I like the hero very much in all his tortured angry warrior self but the heroine steals the show of me.

She is kind, brave, fierce, human (kinda) and never gives up her values and forces a relationship of equality with the hero. Good stuff.

You will love this action packed paranormal romance.

I was given this book for my honest review. So there you have it!

Thea Harrison had me hooked since the first book of The Elders Series. Now she is starting a new series "Moonshadow", well a spinoff of The Elders. Sophie Ross is recuperating after being shot in the line of duty, a witch consultant for the LAPD. Sophie has always known she was adopted, then Kathryn Shaw meets with her and claims her father rescued her when she was five. Shocked and curious, clues send her to England with a chance to inherit a house, land, and a stipend. She meets Nikolas, the Dark Court Commander and his knights and her adventure begins as she tries to help them return and save their home. Things heat up between them while on this quest. A great extension of The Elders Series. Thea's writing is exciting, thrilling, and sexy. I will not miss reading any of this series.

OMG I loved this book and literally snickered my way through it. Sophie was hilarious. She kept telling Nikolas that he wasn't the boss of her. Sometimes nicely sometimes not. Even though Nikolas has lived a long time he wasn't as much of an autocratic ass as he could have been. Because Sophie actually tickled him at times lol.
This book was an action packed adrenaline rush from beginning to end. And the chemistry between Nikolas and Sophie was blistering from the start. I loved the rest of Nikolas's men and am hopeful that they all get their stories. Even though this is set in the same world as her Elder Race series this one can be read without any issues if you've not read those. But if you haven't why not? They are fantastic.
I was given this book by the author and I give it 5 stars.

I am a huge fan of Thea Harrison's elder series so when she was looking for reviewers I jumped at the chance to read MOONSHADOW. I was not disappointed, it was outstanding as usual. This book has everything Ms. Harrison is known for, a sassy, fearless and spirited heroine, an alpha male, action, humor, sex, intimacy, and a plot that will keep readers eager for the next installment. It wouldn't be a Harrison book without the host of secondary alpha males who hopefully will receive their own stories. I loved everything about MOONSHADOW, the suspense, the paranormal aspect which was original as well as new paranormal entities introduced. More than anything I enjoyed the sexual tension and verbal sparring between Sophie and Nikolas. This book was fun and entertaining on so many levels that I know I will be rereading it again soon especially when I need a comfort read.

When witch Sophie Ross learns she could inherit a house, the land and an annual stipend for the upkeep, she leaves her job as a consultant for the police and travels to the U.K. Sophie is not your typical witch, she's so much more as Nikolas Sevigny learns much to his dismay. Nikolas is a knight of the Dark Court, he and his fellow warriors are trying to save their race from extinction and restore their home. He and Sophie keep butting heads until he learn of her special gifts that may give them a chance to destroy the Light Fae Queen and her emissaries. The coming battle will change the lives of them all especially Sophie and Nikolas.

Strong heroine who calls the tall, handsome, dark elf hero on his s***. She's a modern American mostly human woman with unique and strong magical powers. He's a warrior who has been fighting a losing war for centuries. He is bossy and she just doesn't take it. I love Thea Harrison because she writes real and strong female characters. This is a great example of that. There are other conflicts in the story, but both of the characters are pretty kickass and they kick the requisite ass. I'm not clear on whether the rest of the trilogy will continue to have them as major characters or if it'll focus on other characters introduced in this story. I'm definitely interested in getting the stories of some of the other characters, but if this is it for this couple .. well it felt short and a little unfulfilling. I was sorry about some of the potential plot lines not getting fully developed and thought the heroine and the house needed some more attention, or at least had potential that wasn't fully realized. Also, I want some backstory on her injuries and... see? I really liked the character and just wanted a bunch more of her. Overall, very enjoyable read - a sweet fast romance with a good bit of world building(in a world that's already fairly developed in Harrison's Elder Races series).

Wonderful "spin off" and start to a new series

I absolutely loved this book. I have read the majority of Thea’s Elder Races books and I have to admit the last couple did not interest me, particularly the vampire ones. I was intrigued when I heard that she was taking the books to Europe and starting a trilogy. This book brought me back to the first three in the series. I adored Sophie, she was tough and real and hilarious. Nik was an jerk, but he owned it and made it work! I loved them together, they managed to compromise and come together without losing the interesting pieces of themselves. Their story wraps up but leaves a larger conflict that I would assume is going to be resolved in book 2 and 3 of the trilogy. I also adored Robin, and the relationship between him and Sophie. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to fans of fantasy and romance

Ms. Harrison takes us across the pond to the magical land of England with a new cast of characters. What I most enjoy about her novels is that she doesn't waste time establishing too much of a back story; we're dropped right into the character's lives and whisked along with them, getting teased with tantalizing hints as the story develops. Not only does this keep the anticipation high, but if you're like me, that means the novel has to be finished in one sitting!

Other things I enjoyed about this book:
- While the sex is plentiful, it's tasteful and balanced; and doesn't dominate the novel.
- It's obvious Ms. Harrison researches her subject matter, and I appreciate that. Little touches of truth, and nods to the famous myths of England really enhance the story and tie everything together.
- There's some thoughtful life lessons woven throughout, which make this more than your average paranormal romance novel.

So if you've devoured the Elder Races series like I have, do yourself a favor and pick up this book, and start a new journey with Sophie and Nikolas.

This was a very well rounded book. Funny, romantic, action-packed, with strong, likeable characters and an interesting plot line that kept the book flowing at a good pace. It's difficult to deliver a great story each time when writing a series, but this one was a very enjoyable start. Dragos & Pia are one of my top couples from her Elder Races series and now I'm adding Sophie and Nikolas to that list. Looking forward to reading the next book.

When Thea Harrison asked for reader reviewers, I reacted, thinking I wouldn’t pass. I don’t have my own blog and my reading habits were in decline this year. But I love to read, absolutely loved her Elder Races series, and when I saw the blurb and cover of Moonshadow I couldn’t not react.
Being selected fired my imagination and it seemed that I only needed a good book to get back in the game. I read Moonshadow in two sittings. It started strong and I kept my attention. Only knowing that I had to work the following day, stopped me.
The blurb of the book gives a good impression of what this book is about. It is written in the world of the Elder races, but stands alone. Only one character from earlier books makes an appearance.
I loved the character of Sophie. She had endured her difficult past and made a life for herself. Her coping with the aftermath of the shooting is believable. I liked how she doesn’t waste opportunities, when presented, and went to a different continent to seek her past and a new future. Nikolas took a while to warm up to. He has a hard life, seeing his comrades in arms fall away one by one. It makes him a hard man, used to bad times. The chemistry between Sophie and Nikolas was beautiful. They trusted each other, even when they had to deal with treachery. And they talked with each other, always nice to read, as I loathe the BigMis trope. The banter was quick and funny.
This book is also filled with great secondary characters. I adored Robin. Even though his was mistreated and neglected he still is the mischievous puck from the Shakespearian plays. The knights (Gawain!) are good sequel bait. The bad guy also sounds interesting. There is a hint of him being redeemable, which I like. All in all it was a captivating book with fascinating characters. I love to return and learn more about the Dark Court, the Light Court and the European part of the Elder Races world.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

First let me say that I am a reader and lover of books, but in no way a writer, so here goes my review:

Let me start by saying that I love the Elder Races books by Thea Harrison. Love Pia, Dragos, Liam, and the entire extended family. I was very excited to be able to read this new book, which is a New Spin Off of the Elder Races.

The main characters are Sophie and Nikolas. Sophie who is a witch and Nikolas who is a Knight for the Dark Fae. The chemistry between the two was great. Sophie is a modern women that can take care of herself with a little attitude, which is good, Nikolas needs someone to challenge him a little once in a while, as he is so used to things his way. From the start, middle to the end I loved their story and glad that they are on their way to a HEA.

By the way, Miss Thea Harrison, where can I find my own Puck? I absolutely love love love this little guy and I am looking forward to seeing him in the coming books????!!!!!

I am looking forward to the books to come in this new series and learning more about the Light and Dark Fae Courts.

Overall, I felt that this was a great start to a whole new world and characters from Thea Harrison. And I would recommend this book to my friends and family, which I already have. My sister in law can’t wait to get her copy.

I loved, loved, loved this story. The writing is amazing, descriptions are full and believable, every detail from the countryside, battles, characters and romance just draws you in.
There is something for everyone in this story, love, friendship, betrayal, magic and a battle.

This book is a wonderful read and I can't recommend it enough.

This is the best book I have read this year!! I read it from start to finish in one day, then started it again. Moonshadow is a spinoff of the Elder Races series that offers readers the opportunity to fully experience the Elder Races world.

Sophie, a consultant for the LAPD, is recovering from a shooting when she is offered an opportunity to inherit some property in England. Needing time to recover and plan for the future, she takes on the challenge.

Nikolas, a dark fae knight that is looking for a way to protect his men and get home, sees the perfect solution in Sophie. If only he can get control of his fascination for the resourceful Sophie.

Together they light the electronic book pages on fire. When you take two headstrong, independent personalities and throw them into life or death situations you get the page-turner Moonshadow. I throughly enjoyed the book and can hardly wait for the the next one in the series.

I love Thea Harrison's Elder Races series so I was REALLY excited to read this book! I have to admit that it took me a couple chapters to like, then love, Nickolas. He initially came across as a bit of a jerk but slowly Thea Harrison pulled back the layers and boy am I now crushing on him! The female lead, Sophia, is a strong, independent woman who leaves her current job and home to search for answers of her childhood. The line from her that made me laugh out loud (and garner stares from those around me) and sealed my adoration? "Thanks for asking, <expletive for donkey behind>."! This is a recurring line said throughout the book and perfectly encapsulates Sophia's humor and strength while also showing the progression of her helping Nickolas to battle for his people and realize that the home he's been searching for is his for the taking. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

I am a huge fan of this author’s Elder Races novels, and this is set in that same world, although in a different story arc. While I don’t believe it’s necessary to have read any of the previous books, one of the things that this author does better than almost anyone else writing in this genre today is world-building. Reading some of the earlier books (all of which are amazing) ahead of time might help with more context, but the author does a good job of providing enough background that it isn't necessary. This book has all of Thea Harrison’s trademarks – very smart writing, well-developed and interesting characters, the most creative plots imaginable, excellent pace, suspense, excitement, and yes, romance . . . pretty much everything I want in a novel. I was nervous about Thea moving this in a different direction from the Elder Races, but I shouldn’t have been. This new story arc, set in England in the land of the Dark Fae, is thrilling. I can't wait for the next one in this new series.

Thea Harrison pleasantly surprised me by writing a book that takes me back to her earlier Elder Races books! I have to admit I have been disappointed in the little, cheesy family sagas with Pia, Dragos and Liam, so was thrilled that this book was so not that! This was a GREAT book, the storyline was fresh, the romance was hot and the secondary characters were good! I loved the setting and the mystery and from start to finish I was thoroughly engaged! I have always liked the stories of Pia and Dragos the best out of any of her other stories. I always believed it would be hard to read characters that were as well written as those two, but she has done it again. This book has two amazing lead characters with a fantastic story full of romance and adventure. It is set in the Elder Races world but is a new branch.

Sophie is a witch consultant for the LAPD on leave. She inherits property in the UK with conditions. She sets out to see this property and meets Nikolas, from the Dark Court. The animosity between them is fun to read and the chemistry almost burns the pages. We learn more about Morgan, what he can do and are set up for what appears to be cross over story lines. If you like strong lead characters with lots of chemistry and intrigue this is a story for you. Excellent writing, story building, suspense and character development.

4.5 - "Stay the course." Stars!

To say that I was impressed with this book would be an understatement. Thea Harrison, is a new author for me, and Moonshadow gave me everything I am looking for in a story from this genre.

The author set the scene extremely well, and being the start of the Moonshadow series there were introductions aplenty through the first few chapters, I think it highlights the quality of the writing and storytelling in that I wasn’t confused at any point about who everyone was.

For decades now, they had been searching and fighting, and dying…

I loved Sophie and Nikolas together, the former a partial Djinn her magic and knowledge offers something up to the Knight of the Dark Court and his small band of Brothers that are left on Earth that is sorely needed, an opportunity to travel back to their own realm Lyonesse, to bring back to Earth more warriors and supplies in an effort to defeat the Queen of the Light Court.

"You might be the key."

As I said I haven’t read anything by this author before, but the imagination, colour and depth of development that she gave this story just kept me gripped to its pages right up to its end, I just hope that the release of the next novel in the series; Spellbound is in early rather than latter summer 2017, because I literally cannot wait to get my hands on it.

"I’ve lost so many people. So many… I thought I didn’t have it in me to care about anyone else again. But now I do, and yes, I’m struggling, because I don’t think I could take losing you too."

Nic and Sophie together were a force to be reckoned with, this is a couple that literally look to have a disagreement just so they can spend time making up with each other, Nic is old school chivalry, commandeering, controlling and when he tells you to do something he expects it to be done. Sophie a woman of modern day is all about making her own decisions, and not being told what to do, so the rub between them caused some really great friction burns in regards to the verbal sparring, and sexy times as the book progressed.

"You’re still insufferable… Just saying."

"And you’re the same mouthy broad you were last night."

This series I think is essentially going to be a battle of good versus Evil, I am sure as it develops there will be triumphs as well as losses, I am not sure whether the author will continue the series from this couples point of view, or bring new and/or secondary characters to the fore with each installment, but I know I am looking forward to seeing how things develop as the story-line progresses. Its safe to say that Moonshadow is most definitely just the beginning of what I expect to be an absolutely outstanding series, and I cannot wait.

"I didn’t know I was looking for you, but I was."

This was a wonderful book. The characters were engaging and complex. Nik was dark and formidable while Sophie kicked ass. She stood up for herself and didn't let anyone push her around. She was a warrior thru and thru. Robin was somewhat indescribable and I want to see where Ms Harrison takes him in following books. I can't wait for the next book in the series and this book is right up there with Dragon Bound. My only complaint is I want to know more Nik and Sophie's background.
