Surviving Hitler is written for people between the ages of 10- adults. The story is written about a real person's heroic journey during the time of the Holocaust. The author does a great job of capturing the reader with real black and white photographs accompanied by graphic details of the experiences of Janek Mandelbaum. Through these photos and texts she allows the reader to feel a sense of compassion and connection with our hero and gives the reader a much deeper understanding of the events that took place during the time of Germany's invasion. Although there are times when the reader hurts for Janek, you want to continue reading for closure. This story would be a great whole class reading while studying the events of the Holocaust. It gives an in-depth account of the events leading up to and after the Holocaust. It leaves the reader in awe thinking about all the trials and tribulations that Janek Mandelbaum went through during this 3 year long ordeal.

This book is excellent, written by a man's recollection of his grandfather's experience during WW II. It is not a long book and will hold your interest. It is amazing the things this boy went through and it is heart-breaking and it really makes you wonder about man's inhumanity to man.

I have seen my share of holocaust movies and before reading this book I felt that I had a grasp on how things were and how thing must have been. After reading this book I realized I had no clue seeing the holocaust on a screen and reading it from the words of a survivor are to completely different experiences. I recommend this book to all people trying to know and understand more about the cruel and tragic history of the holocaust. This book really paints a picture for its readers and really touches your heart. This book really put things into prospective and it was an honor to be able to ready this survivor story.

I think this book was well done for younger readers, learning about this terrible period in life.
It is however, a monstrous topic and I would advise to read with caution, but to read, nevertheless, as history must be told.

Are you interested in World War II and the Nazi death camps and what it was like for the Jews? If you are, you should definitely read this book. It is a true story about a Jewish boy named Jack. Jack lived a normal life with his family in a Polish village called Gdynia. His family was well off and happy. He loved the beach and got into trouble. He was a normal boy. He didn't really practice Judaism. He didn't understand the war and he didn't care, until the Nazi occupation. That changed everything. Jack and his family are forced into a ghetto and later separated and sent to concentration camps. As Jack is moved from camp to camp, he meets new friends and he finds himself changing. All he wants is to survive. All the time he is wondering what happened to his family and when the war will be over. He is always worrying about sickness and what is happening to his family and where they are. Are they even alive? Sometimes he thinks he should just give up and die, but each time he manages to get through, right? You'll have to read and find out!
I loved this book. I have read a lot of books this year, a few were about World War II, and this was one of my favorite. This book really helped me understand what the concentration camps were like. I had always wondered what is was like and I tried to find a good book but none of them was as descriptive and real as this one. One of the reasons was that this story is true. The depth of this book really gave me a great idea about World War II. I got lost in it and never wanted to stop reading. I definitely recommend this book. I would only recommend it to people who can handle detail and gruesome facts. It has to be in detail, it's true! It may be detailed but it is still one of the best books I've ever read.
This book showed what kind of courage, hope, mental strength and faith it took to survive the camps. The most physically strong person could be the first to die, but the strong in heart were the last survivors.

The author makes a good effort to be objective, but drops the ball here and there. The biggest blunder seems to be in the summary of holocaust casualties. The author left out the fact that 3 Million Polish-Catholics were butchered by Hitler. This fact is often forgotten, and very hurtful, especially to the Poles who lost someone in the Polish holocaust or "Forgotten Holocaust.". A great book to read is Richard Lukas' "The Forgotten Holocaust: The Poles Under nazi Occupation."
