Love Letters Of Great Men - Vol. 1

I bought this because I read another review from someone that claimed the book had illustrations and some back story accompanying the letters; there are neither. There are a lot of blank pages and not even a prologue describing the contents,etc. Very disappointing. I would not recommend getting this book.

i bought this book because I am writing an article on James Joyce's "The Dead" from Dubliners. If there is any way that the content could have been more cursory, superficial, devoid of content, I can't image how. The majority of the letters are less than a page long, double spaced, and give zero insight into the authors. How anyone got away with selling this I can't imagine. I will be a lot more careful next time. the store has no filter at all.

This book gives a diverse range of love letters of great men to the 'objects of their affections', and a then provides information regarding what happened between the parties post love letter. The letters are full of descriptive emotion on every level. Some happy endings, but many not. The "Afterword" at the end of the book summed it up for me. Although Lewis Carroll's letter seemed sweet initially, the follow up information, and reading in between the lines, led me to google which confirmed my suspicion.

I am extremely confused and frustrated. I ORDERED Love Letters of Great Men by John Kirkland expecting to get a book that included some history behind the letters. Instead I got this version, no history, no descriptions....just letters.
To say that I am disappointed would be a gross understatement.
this was not at all what was advertised on the the store page.

I enjoyed reading these love letters written by several of our great historical giants, which include Napoleon, George Washington and Mozart, (to name but a few). Each selection provides the reader with a glimpse of the sensual character of each man portrayed, and the depth of his romantic feeling. This book would be a wonderful addition to anyone's library, and a great gift to that certain special someone in your life.

Wonderful voyeuristic thrill of reading other people's lover letters, without the shame or guilt. But even more than that, this book will pull you into the world of the lover and the loved. Makes a great read, and would be an excellent gift. Read it in bed together, just like Carrie and Big did!

While Kirkland's construction of this book is solid it unfortunately doesn't bring anything new to the table. With the hype surrounding the book it would seem that it would offer more than the same collection of love letters we've read time and time again. The stories behind the lives of the men inspired by love are fascinating and an interesting read but the book left something to be desired. The book was a disappointment if you've seen other advertisements that feature a larger, thicker book. It leaves a book worm disappointed.

This really doesn't need a full introduction. It's a compilation of famous men and their love letters between great loves of their lives. It's truly inspiring to read the depth of these men's hearts as they pour so much heartfelt emotion into expressing their undying love to their chosen person. It's sweet, sometimes sad, but well worth the read.
