This book is a must-have for serious gardeners and those that live off the land. It shows you how to make your own root cellar from scratch, or how to convert a small room into a food storage room.

This book isn't just about how-to store, but also WHAT TO GROW. Not everything is best for long term storage, only certain types of particular veggies can be stored, and this book tells you what you need to grow.

The author has done some excellent research. His personal experience is augmented by visiting many working root cellars. The hows are deepened by the whys of using root cellars. All of that is broadened by a thorough understanding of what crops are best for cellaring.

This is a good primmer on keeping your harvest. Of course canning is the ultimate long term storage solution - which I am doing now! Freezing isnt too bad either if you have food saver bags. If you go to the trouble of buying really good potatoes from Irish Eyes or some other awsome heirloom supplier, or have a ton of great apples and no time to cook them, you'll want to keep your produce as long as possible. These guys give good ideas about where, how and what temperature for beginners. Of course, if the end comes this is good information to have when the stores are gone for good. Gardening is hard work, and has become increasingly expensive so why not save your harvest?

Very good book. Ive been growing, freezing, canning and dehydrating my food for years. Ive also been stashing a modest harvest of potatoes in a cool dry closet with ok results but they never lasted more than 3 or 4 months and they always ended up a little shriveled. I expanded my garden another 2000 square feet so I finally decided to try root cellering. This book covers everything you need to do it right. For example I didnt know squash had to be kept in a dry warm environment as oposed to potatoes in a cold humid environment to last through spring. I would have placed them all in one place in the root cellar and probably ended up with rotten squash but excellent potatoes.

excellent purchase. i was pleasently surprised -loads of information. A couple of sections in the book verifyed what i had heard from my mother-how food was stored in the 1930's
plus loads of other helpful hints and practical ways to store ,handle, and process garden fresh food.
A NECESSITY FOR PREPING FOR THE FUTURE.

Excellent book. I have not read it cover to cover but what I have read already has provided me with the knowledge on how to save food much better than I already do. I will not have a root cellar next year but I know this book will help me when I do make one.

I have been thinking about creating a space for storing my veggies over the winter and grew up with a root cellar and didn't realize how much I would miss it once we moved from the area. Now I am desperate to re-create the storage space and this book is a great resource. Thank you.
