Yet another good premise absolutely ruined by the MC. He's whiny, petulant, stupid, arrogant, and stubborn. If the character is someone I wouldn't want to be around in real life, why would I waste my time reading about him?

Also if I don't have to read the word "whatever" for a year, that would be just fine. So annoying.

I am thoroughly pleased with this book and the way it is presented. The main character is enjoyable, if a bit mule headed.

The way the main TAC Officer is presented is very believable. He is just the type most basic trainee survivors have met.

Good stuff.

There are periods of tension and excitement, but they were overwhelmed by arbitrary yet heavily underlined plot twists. In the end, it felt too much like some game with unannounced rules instead of reality.
Judgment of Mars (Starship's Mage Book 5) :: Stellar Fox (Castle Federation) (Volume 2) :: The Forgotten Engineer (Athena Lee Chronicles Book 1) :: Terra and Imperium (Duchy of Terra) (Volume 3) :: Voice of Mars (Starship's Mage Book 3)

Take a veteran recon soldier and sneeze to a training a Academy to learn how to be mage scout, give him all kinds of problems, personal and mental. Now you that have one messed up individual add all kinds of other trying issues, especially non-standard and other worldly and see what happens.
I am looking forward to it.

Couldn't get 20% finished before the childish and shallow plot, story and characters became intolerable. You would enjoy reading a ceral box more. At best its written on the story level of a bad video game, not even qualifying as juvenile science fiction.

Enjoyable read, space opera with magic and psionics. Always an interesting mix when done with care. Not too sure about the involvement of a creator vs demons setup, but I can roll with it. A good read.

Before getting into this book, I thought this would be about the typical teen enduring months of arduous training, but succeeding in spite of all the walls blocking him. I was pleasantly surprised to find that wasn't so. However, for a veteran Recon Marine to sound so whiney is just unbelievable. Once you get past that, this is a pretty fast paced story. Looking forward to the next in the series.

The story reminds me of a combination of Dungeons & Dragons, combined with Halo. Then add interesting characters & a snotty battle computer & you've got one heck of a great yarn! Fun, active, exciting read! Now, let me at book 2,

This book was good enough that I subscribed to the author. I liked to concept. The execution was good. The main character wasn't perfect. (thank god not another Marty Stu).

The only thing that threw me a bit was the shadowy conspiracy that seems to drive the story. I just didn't care about that part and it seemed a bit forced.

This book reminded me more of the couple of written RPGs I've read than a true story, if that makes sense. I almost gave it a 4, but so much was hard to believe I couldn't. I will read at least the next book in the series, the main character and his fellow squad members are very likable.

Richard is a wizard scout cadet and someone in high places is looking after this impulsive warrior. But many questions are left unanswered, so we will have to read the next book for more adventures of Rick and Nick.

I liked the book more than my title indicates. I realize that I don't have much experience in the world of scifi fantasy novels. I actually liked the combo. The galactic Mage series was very good and this one is starting out pretty mysteriously.

Read all 3 books. Liked the theory behind the books of mixing tech with magic, but the writing of the character interactions were very simplistic. When two people consider themselves "friends" they don't use each others names in every sentence. "well hey Nick" "thanks for telling me that Nick" "its ok Rick". That part tended to drag me out of the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this first book from this author. It has an interesting mix of fantasy and sci fi that works surprisingly well together. I hope there will be more to come and would recommend it to others.
