Clear instructions.. Lots of photos. Just what I was looking for- easy process, lots of potential for individual creativity, spectacular results. No need to try matching several different fabrics. Just choose one fabric- each block is different, but they all blend together.

I have just started learning to quilt, however, my sister used this book to make a quilt and it was absolutely beautiful. I am looking forward to learning this technique as I progress in learning this craft. This has become my challenge for the future.

One of the best classes that I have ever taken was for this method!! If you choose the right fabric you will create a masterpiece. The book is very well written and provided excellent suggestions as I was taking the class.

Maxine Rosenthal does a fantastic job showing you One-Block Wonders in both hexagons and octagons. NO Y-SEAMS! The book has fantastic pictures of the fabric used vs. how the final quilts look. You will not be disappointed.

Very clear instructions and great photos. Finished product turned out much better than expected and would recommend this book to others. Particularly well written section on choosing the right type of fabric for this quilt style.

Very well written book with easy to follow instructions on how to put these quilts together. Make sure you have the right material and watch it burst into one of the most colorful quilts you've ever made.

I think that the One-Block Wonder quilt pattern is the most exciting design that I have ever made. The best part was finding 20 year old yardage of sateen cloth in my stash that I was able to fussy-cut into a very nice quilt. This fabric was destined for a thrift store until being saved by the One-Block Wonder design.

I am looking forward to creating additional wonders.

Thank you Maxine for your creativity.

I know several people who have made beautiful quilts from these designs.
Looking at the complexity of the process, I bought the book and decided not to use it. The designs are too busy and too complicated for me at this time.

Despite doing patchwork for yerars, I'd never heard of this technique till I chanced on a Facebook site on the subject!
Unlike normal patchwork, where you use loads of fabrics and want to accentuate the patterns you create, this uses just one piece of cloth. Avoid the normal patchwork fabrics (tiny designs, stripes, checks) and go for big swirly designs, large novelty prints - the sort of stuff you normally avoid!
The idea is to line up the pattern repeats, cut six identical 60 degree triangles and assemble a hexagon. You get a sort of kaleidoscope effect (and each hexagon can be assembled in different ways to vary the result.) By judiciously arranging your hexies, you get a totally different look. (Can also use octagons combined with 'sensational squares.'
This is a fab book to get started, inspiring photos and clear instructions. There's advice on the fabrics that work (and photos of the original fabric juxtaposed with the quilts she's created - unrecognisable!)
I've bought my fabric and am off to try it!

The author goes in to great detail to help you pick the correct fabrics and has examples of things to avoid. Easy to understand and the quilts that are shown are amazing. I'm a beginner at piecing quilts, and I'm happy with my first project.

This is such an amazing book! Never will I ever look at fabric in the same way again!
I am a relatively new quilter (less than a year) and already I've made 2, and have purchased the fabric for 6 more! Depending on how big the repeat in your fabric choice is, that will determine the size of your quilt top, but you can always double, or even triple the amount of fabric used.
The most wonderful thing about this process is, which the author goes very in depth, you only need ONE fabric for the entire top! I don't know about others, but one of the things quilters sometimes struggle with is combining colors/fabrics in a pleasing way. This takes out the guess work. As long as you like the colors in the beginning fabric, that is what you end up with.
Maxine explains two different approaches, the hexagon and the octagon. How to cut, piece, and everything in between (with NO Y-seems). Even what to do with the left overs--pot holders, table runners, etc. I made throw pillows to match, personally.
I'm most excited about the sequel coming out in June 2008, One-Block Wonders: Encore! Where Maxine goes into the other shapes seen in this book and MORE!
If you are considering buying this book, DO IT! It would be an injustice to yourself if you don't discover this fantastic technique!! And to all those who receive your wonderful quilts as gifts!
Happy Quilting!

Once I picked up this book in a fabric shop and leafed through it, I could not get the idea out of my head. So I HAD to buy the book!Rosenthal makes her special brand of kaleidoscopic quilting look very simple. With clear guidelines and stunning pictures of completed quilts for inspiration, you'll be ready to start!

Presently I am searching for a good fabric to use for this project--be warned that not every fabric can work. The selection of colors and prints is key.

The only thing that annoyed me about this book is that some instructions are left out, most notably the formation of a hollow block cube. However, I understand that the sequel (One-Block Wonders Encore) includes these directions.

I'd recommend this type of quilting to people who like to play with colors and patterns. It's very untraditional, so I can understand why it's not for everyone. As for me, I'm inspired! I'll never see fabric the same way again!

I'm a huge fan of "stack and whack" style quilts using only one fabric. This book is no exception, and it lets you create quilts that look amazing but use only one fabric.
Fabric is what can make or break this quilt, and unfortunately, I've yet to have much success finding the appropriate prints to use this method. Of the five or six I've tried, only one has turned out well due to fabric that is too busy, too many colors, or just plain "not right."
If you bring a mirror with you to the fabric store (to preview what kaleidoscopes will look like), you will have much better success, so be careful with the fabric (since a failed quilt is EXPENSIVE, as you need 5-6 yards for a lap size) and you'll do fine.

This is a wonderful book for a beginner. It leaves little doubt about what to do and appropriate fabrics to use for this type quilt. I am an experienced quilter, but not with this technique. I recommend it.

I asked for this book last Christmas. Had to pry it away from my wife and daughter (both quilters.) We got a large, colorful print, enough to get six repeats(guidance in book.) I pinned the six repeats exactly on top of each other. They cut out many sets of six identical triangles with a rotary cutter. We voted on which of the three ways of making each set into a hexagon was the best. They sewed them together, and laid them out and decided which hexagons went where(guidance in the book.) Some we rejected, because they stuck out too much. The result was a stunning quilt. It is unique: even if two people used the same fabric, they would come up with different results.

The author has done a fantastic job of showing what you can do with one fabric and make it different from you basic "stack and slash" variety of quilts. Lots of examples and clear directions should allow both the novice and experience quilter to have a wonderful time making these quilts. I especially like the examples that show the original fabric! It's amazing how much her colorwash technique of the blocks makes the basic fabric evolve into something else completely!

One of the few quilting books I've read from cover to cover! Can't wait to try different fabrics to create quilts from subtle and mushy to bold and dramatic! Already looking at the fabric in the quilt shops with a whole new mind set!

Simple to understand and make, awesome to look at. I love this book. I ran out and bought fabric to make one of these quilts the same day I received the book. If your looking for a fun and artistic way to make quilt's then buy this book. I have two other books on making Kaleidescope quilts but found them a bit more complicated. The One Block method from this book is easy to follow, quicker and tons of fun to create. The quilt photos are beautiful and inspiring as well. I cant wait for the second book on this method due in June '08. I have already pre-ordered it.

This is probably one of my favorite quilt books. It's extremly easy to follow and teach yourself. I've made several quilts now using this technique and each has come out different yet fantastic. It's such a great way to use a fabric with a pattern that you're not crazy about but might love the colors. I now look at fabric in a whole new way, by forming my fingers into a triangle and seeing how it would look as a "One Block Wonder Quilt." Clearance sections have become my friend for these type of quilts. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone. It's a super easy, fun technique to learn, and you only need the book, no class necessary.

I am so glad I found this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys quilting. The quilts are exhilarating to make-- each block is different than the last, and taking the blocks to the "design wall," as the author calls it, is an amazing process: There are so many ways to put things together, and so many ways to use color with this technique.

While the quilts look complicated, they are actually pretty simple to put together. The seams are all straight seams, and the author's directions are easy to follow.

The only thing I would mention that the author didn't, is not to use hand-dyed batiks with these projects. While they seem like a perfect fit, the patterns are not exact enough to make the kaleidoscope-like blocks work.

The next two quilts will be for my kids, and I can't wait to take them to the design wall. The fabric will be the same for both quilts, but we'll end up with two very different pieces of art for my children. I am so excited that I can involve my family in my hobby.

This book is clearly written, well-organized and easy to follow. The hardest part is lining up the motifs on the six layers of fabric but once done, the directions are clear and the results are magnificent. A friend and I worked together and created a one-of-a-kind quilt that has us both amazed. You will never look at fabric the same way again! We chose a very bold Hawaiian print that has turned into an incredible piece of art. Each hexagon block can be put together 3 different ways and with 108 blocks the fun comes in the arrangement. You will be so pleased with your results. A great read even if you never make one of these quilts. A great book to add your quilting library.

I took a class with Maxine to learn this technique before the book was published. I bought the book just to have it. It is well written. The quilt blocks are really quick and easy to make and I've gotten wonderful responses to the quilts I've made using this technique.

I bought this book 3 weeks ago and I have been so pleased with it. At first, you might think this is just an extension of Stack 'N Whack, but it isn't. The only similarity is the pinning technique which is essentially the same. The differences are in what Maxine Rosenthal does with the blocks that result and in the types of fabrics she uses. I'm about to complete my first quilt from this book and I already have others planned. I highly recommend it.

This is a really interesting way of making quilts. Just one fabric and each hexagon is completely different. The hard part comes in arranging the pieces properly. This takes quite a bit of rearranging on a design wall.

I love this type of quilt, and this method is just fun to do. If you have a lot of large print material, this is a great way to make a great quilt. The instructions were very good, just learn to keep all your little pieces together.

This book opens up a new and easy technique for beginners as well as expert quilters. My whole quilting bee

each made a quilt with this method. The results were wonderful. We had so much fun. The possibilities are

endless.

The book is written very clearly but in it the author makes reference to the hollow cube. She never gives any instructions for making the hollow cube. I think she should not talk about it and show pictures of it unless she gives directions for including it in a quilt. I was disappointed in that one aspect of the book.

I was fascinated with the Stack and Whack concept so saw this book and thought it was similar. It is not! Definitely not for the beginner. I have made several quilts but I would never be able to figure this out. Also, I thought these quilts were much too busy.

Very pleased with the service the store gave me. I told others that I found the book I was looking for here at the store and they ordered from here also---plus getting it at a lower price than we could find in the stores(that is if you could find it in the stores). it also saved all the running around looking for it.

I definetly will use the store again.

Particularmente este libro me ha encantado, no tiene desperdicio.

Las explicaciones son buenas pero lo más interesante es que todos los modelos realizados son preciosos. Estoy encantada de haberlo comprado

Working with hexagon and octagon pieces, you get a visual effect like the front cover of the book. I thought the quilts looked a mess and didn't have any definition of design in them. I suppose it would be fine for someone who actually likes this kind of quilting. Not my cup of tea.
