An awakening that all should read and digest. There has been a tremendous regression with race relations in America over last 8 years. This classic book, published in 1901, has significant relevance today and should be read and discussed in every school at every educational level across the U.S.

I particularly liked that I feel I know more about who I now consider an American hero Booker T Washington was, what he stood for and his accomplishments. It also made me realize that we need someone much like him to finish his work which was also bringing races together, because if we leave that to the likes of idiots like Al Sharpton and his ilk we are doomed to have ever worsening race relations.

This book was easy to read and gives insight into a great American mind. For someone to be so unselfish as to dedicate his life to the improving Southern racial tensions through education after being a slave himself is amazing. His selfless model of giving to others is an example we should all model. This book should required reading of all educators and read by anyone wanting peace in the world. His philosophy of education could be an answer to the public school problem in America. Booker T. Washington was truly gifted in lifting up mankind at a critical time in American history.

A champion of civil rights long before it became popular, Booker T Washington's life story as told by himself, is a timeless lesson. It should be required reading for all who would champion a trodden class of any society.

Personal history, warm account by a hero of our country. Great attitude and ethics showing through what could have been described as a terrible childhood. Warm, encouraging, thoughtful. Great descriptions of the physical settings, deep south of long ago.

Very interesting! Written by a man who was born a slave, he did not have an ounce of hatred. He had values and morals that applied to every man regardless of color. He also writes about his observations of Northerners and Southerners, the differences and qualities of each. Being a southerner, I completely understand and agree. Everyone should read this book.

I want the book, just not this edition: the verso page says "...This book is a work of fiction and any resemblance to any person..." etc. The shoddy appearance of the text in this Millennium Publications version makes me think it was a cut-and-paste error, but a significant one. Especially since I am buying this for a library! I am replacing it with the Dover edition and the store refunded my money in full, to their credit!

This was one of the first autobiographies that I've read for leisure and I will admit it was a little slow at points however it is amazing to learn about the struggles of Booker T Washington and how different our mindsets are now on education compared to earlier in our history.

This book is a delight easy read about the trials of re-construction. The author is a dedicated, hard worker who makes Re-construction work for him in a very positive way...I'm sure that it was not so for so many others. The time period from which this book is written shows its age in today's world but, the author is so compassionate that you just have to admire him. I enjoyed this as a another view into slavery and re-construction.

Good book by one of America's greatest educators. In this book Washington reveals the best way to reduce unemployment and underemployment - give young people valuable job skills. Too bad most of our educators and political leaders have not read this book.

Booker Washington's live is a humbling and amazing story from being born into slavery to being a worldwide thought leader and spokesman. His development of Tuskegee remains an enduring legacy. It's a shame he died so young.

For an enjoyable, educational read by one of the greatest leaders in history, look no further than this classic. I'd read ABOUT this book when I was a schoolboy, and now I've finally read the book itself. Washington was a gifted communicator, a passionate teacher, and an influencer with keen emotional intelligence. His ability to navigate the turbulent waters of late 19th century racial politics is amazing, and he did it all with an inspiring optimism and moral compass. He started with nothing -- less than nothing, because his childhood slavery started him in a deep hole -- and he built a legacy that continues to benefit the entire world today. We need more people like Booker T. Washington!

An excellent, straight-forward description of life under slavery and the Reconstruction. It tells how one man dedicated his entire life to helping his people rise through education, without hostility and bitter confrontation with the whites, but through cooperation, recognizing and following the good, and teaching true principles.

This is a very interesting and informative story of a man I had heard of for many years but really knew nothing about. It should be read by every American adult. This man was a true American hero who does not get the recognition he deserves.

Booker T. Washington's autobiography is written in such a self-effacing style that sometimes it is hard to remember what truly amazing accomplishments he achieved. An inspiring story--easy to read, hard to pt down.

this is one of the better biographies of the great men of history. it surpasses many in exemplifying earnestness, the great strides that be gained with pure and focussed motive, the quelling of one's ego, and many joyous anecdotes of a life dedicated to others. I recommend to all history lover and those engaged in the betterment of self and others.

Although just reading about his ever faithful life makes me exhausted, I am nonetheless inspired. What a story of overcoming. Truly, to empower and enable people to create their own destinies is the American dream he cherished.

Here is a black American who realized that through hard work he could accomplish his dream. He knew no one owed him anything. He mentioned at least 4 times that serving others is greatest joy in life.

Ths is an insightful and inspiring book. Booker T. Washington states his experience of slavery and the struggle for education since without no added drama or bias. His objectiveness is as any author I have ever read. As a human being he is by far ahead of his time and one who has vision and mastery on how to bring about change for the advancement of both (black and white) races. I recommend the book to everyone interested in truth.

If only the leaders of minorities had the same values of work and spirituality today. This book tells the rise from slavery to educated and respected was done through hard work not entitlement. I was inspired by Mr. Washington's dedication to serving others to honor God and not himself.

I enjoyed the challenges given by professor Washington to his people. He spoke of working hard and to the best of your abilities. This is a challenge to any and all races. I think it's sad that Dr. M. L. King spoke such a different message and seemed to undo much of the work which Booker T. Washington spent his life promoting.

What a great role model Booker T. Washington is. This man's humble attitude, tremendous work ethic, persistence in accomplishing his goals are all attributes that everyone should emulate. This should be required reading in all schools. It is a lesson in how to accept personal responsibility, respect others, stand on your on two feet, help others and succeed in life despite overwhelming odds. Great read!!!
