The book arrived very quickly and is in perfect condition. It's a very helpful supplemental material if you are like me and have to buy the 5th edition ebook and homework online. I really like having this physical copy to refer to and so far I've found no differences between this book and the 5th edition.

Fast shipping and book was as described. Used the book for Multivariable calculus. As a visual learner it had detailed pictures to better understand what area we were computing for triple integrals and such. Does a good job with the examples and homework problems.

The book was in new condition, and matched what was posted. My guess is that you're buying this for a college class, so you don't care about the quality of the book's contents (trash) but that the book matches what you were assigned. It does.

only bought it because my class required it.
this book.. my professor doesn't even recommend it, but why she made it a requirement is beyond me.
here is an example of the book explaining things.
it will say
1. 2x+3x = 5x
2. (1/2)x -2y = f(x)
then for the assigned problems for each section.
1. tan^2x + (x/sec(x)) - 33x^4 =
2. what is the distance from the earth to the moon if the derivative of f'(x) = 0
i DO NOT recommend this if you want to learn calculus on your own.
only purchase it if your class requires it.

This book could provide a solid formal foundation when paired with an excellent instructor who will lecture in a way that brings the big picture together in the classroom. However, there is little here beyond highly formal presentations of theorems, proofs, and definitions with little-to-no discussion of the intuition behind the numbers. Worked examples generally assume total mastery of algebra and trigonometric identities. This is also true of the student solutions manual, where one would hope to find some of the missing links explained. Most students hitting Calculus I are fresh out of Precalculus from the prior semester or two, and would benefit from seeing the algebra and trig steps highlighted in worked examples and the student solutions manual. If your instructor is a "read from the book" type, you might like to find a supplemental textbook for reference during your study time. You'll also want to keep your old precalculus textbook handy, because the algebra & trig appendix and inside-cover quick reference guides in this book are sparse.
The text shows a formal description of lots of individual trees, but leaves it to the student to unify them into a picture of the forest.
The website calcchat.com is touted as a benefit to students; however, in the first month of my studies, I have visited the site several times only to find no tutors present even when the indicator claims they are there, and zero reply to questions submitted to email. Students, take note: the contents of the student solutions manual are available online at calcchat.com free of charge. At least there, you will definitely get your money's worth.
In summary, if you are the kind of student who can't stand it when professors show all the steps in a problem, then you might just love this textbook.

The book was Dirt cheap, but other than that, you have to remember that it's full of calculus: the most evil of all maths. I'd have to say that unless you're really mathematically minded, you may not fully understand topics in the book just by trying to read/learn them. Some concepts that are complicated are broken down into other complicated terms that I found weren't simple enough for someone to read them and have his/her memory refreshed from class. If my instructor teaches me something, and i go to study, and the book is difficult to decipher, then it leaves my recollection of my lecture fuzzy.

The book had water damage on the pages, along with heavy wear on the cover and all throughout the book. Exceedingly poor quality. The book had been listed to be in "Good Condition." This was not the case. At all.

Overall, my book arrived in good condition when I bought it, but I ordered the regular edition but instead received the paperback international edition. This makes the book ok for studying or looking on in class, but for the homework it is terrible because I have to meet up with someone in my class every day to make sure the problem set in my text are in the same order as in the normal one (this international edition is the same exact book except with a few of the problems switched around to different numbers).

This book is very inconsistent in it's explanations in the example sections. They add the explanations in red in some problems, and many other they don't and you are left trying to pick through the book looking for the right rule or formula they are using, very frustrating trying to learn from this book. Some answers are left as un-rationalized fractions, and some answers are factored a certain way, and others are foiled; it seems very arbitrary. Our professor said that he basically keeps using this book because it is required by the college, and students are able to use it across multiple courses. I couldn't imagine trying to learn from this book without a class, I can't wait to return it.

I am not the first time learner. I already completed my B.A.Sc Electrical Engineering degree many years ago. Recently I needed to refresh my knowledge of Calculus and I picked this book. I found it very intuitive and interesting. A lot of practical applications are provided as example problems with colorful pictures. I liked all example problems as the solutions were presented in very comprehensive manner.

I ordered this book directly from the store and it came promptly. The book itself is somewhat confusing, it gives very simple example problems in the beginning sections and then you are expected to be able to solve very complex problems. The solutions in the back do not help you much. If you are struggling you can go to [...] to get step by step help with odd number problems but beware because these solutions skip simplification steps a lot of the time.

I enjoy this text book. I rarely comment on text books, but I will do it for this one. It is a pleasure to have such a book as this. It is for the most part, easy to understand and follow. (Which is imperative in mathematics.) If I happen to miss a class, I can follow enough of the text to get back into action. I have used other Calculus text from other classes, and find them sub-par as compared to this one. I would recommend this book to any one, and to your school also.

I love this calculus book. I transfered colleges once and ended up using Larson's at one and Stewart's at the other. In addition, I had to TA a course with Stewart's. I have to say that I think Larson's is more for geared to the Engineers and Science than Stewart's. However, I still think Larson's book works so much better on all majors at introducing Calculus to students that are new to college and have little background in theory. This is not a theory book. However, if the student is in the math field he will have plenty of time in his analysis series to learn all the theory.
The one part that this book and Stewart's book lack is where theory is needed more, Vector Calculus. For this part, I always recommend (and am trying to get the department to make standard) is Vector Calculus by Marsden.

This text book is complete, and total waste of money.
Do not expect any kind of explanation of mathematical proofs, it will skip over most explanations, and lead to no end of being frustrated. There is little to no sense, or love of mathematical content. It is just a plain crappy book with grand leaps from section to section. Expect to have to read two sections in advance of the exercises to even attempt them. The layout, and progress of some sections is so discongruent that they will make little to no sense. I ended up getting a new Calculus book by James Stewart to make sense of this travesty of a book.
This book has one way, and one way only for problem solving. Which can cut down on ink, and the size but it just doesn't explain anything. Adding in "technological" avenues for problem solving can only help. It is far easier for a person to skip over something they understand. It is a whole other thing for a text book to skip steps.
Which makes it a poor course book for everyone.
Another reviewer said this very succinctly:
"I do not recommend this weak book on such strong subject. Please do research for yourself and find a better book with more quality. Like I said above, better book (in my personal opinion) is the fifth edition of Calculus by James Stewart. I'm sure there are even better books than that, too. So don't waste your time with this one." I wouldn't limit myself to an edition, or just early transcendentals by Stewart. The man does a great job writing a calculus text book.

This textbook is very useful. Colour images and detailed descriptions make concepts clear and easy to understand - especially when working on your own or to clarify something that was confusing during class. Probably the best textbook I have used in any discipline.

The concepts in this book are very difficult to grasp. It provides easy examples, which do not help in the more difficult problems. The book does not explain concepts, but rather gives you formulas to plug numbers into. Hopefully you will have a good teacher to explain the concepts.
