I felt some trepidation reading this book, for exactly the same reasons the author stated that she was hesitant to write it. The memories of that day are still so raw - it was a very scary time. And yet, I see kids clamor for the other books in this series; The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 and The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 are especially popular titles. For children who weren't even born when September 11th happened, it's just another historic event they are curious about.
Lucas is disappointed in being pulled from his middle school football team due to an injury. He decides to take the train into New York City to see if his beloved uncle Benny can talk his parents into changing their minds. Lucas soon finds himself in the midst of disaster, as the first plane hits the World Trade Center tower, and his uncle and dad, both firefighters, are called to help out. Most of the truly grim details of the terrorist attack are glossed over, but the sense of panic and alarm in those initial moments is handled in a very sensitive and age-appropriate way.
The afterward from the author goes into more detail, explaining the number of casualties, and the national and world-wide reaction after the attacks. I was glad that she decided not to kill off Uncle Benny - even though it might have made the story more dramatic, the series is called "I Survived," after all. Informative and fast-paced, this is a good choice for third-grade readers who want to know more about this day in history.

This is a story about a fictional boy named Lucas who saw and survived 9/11. It was a normal Tuesday for Lucas who had gone to Manhattan without his parents permission. He went to his dad's fire station and his Uncle Bob saw him in confusion. He said " Why are you down here sport?” Lucas responded saying " I have to quit football". Uncle Bob was very sad but then he said" I can see why you got a darn good brain I don't want to see you end up like Stan Walsh. Then a plane flew right over them so low that Lucas could see that the type of plane is AA (American Airlines).
Lucas is a nice, sweet, and; kind 11 year old who loved to play football but had to quit. Lucas was really confused what was happening. As the plane got lower and lower Lucas couldn't believe what he had seen as the plane had crashed into the twin towers. Everyone in a terror of screams and cries filled Manhattan.
Lucas will never forget this terrible day. Read this book to find out why
I thought the book was very good because. It talked about the problems solution and the most important part the main part 9/11. I would recommend this book because it teaches about 9/11. And it also tells you the main character's way of survival.

Have you ever read the book I Survived the Attacks of 9-11? It is about a boy named Lucas who lives in New York and is near the twin towers when they were hit. Lucas has to see his Uncle Benny about something, but the first plane flew over right when he was talking with his uncle and hit the tower. Since Uncle Benny was a fireman, he had to go to the crash site, and so did Lucas’s dad. He also went to the crash site because he wanted to see his dad. He was worried. Right after Lucas had been talking to him for a few minutes, the building collapsed and they had to get to safety. Do you think they made it?
Characters: Lucas, Lucas’s Dad, Uncle Benny, Lucas’s Mom, and Dr. Barret. Lucas is a nice kid who loves sports. His Dad is a person who is always there for you. So is his mother. Uncle Benny is funny and loves sports.
Overall I really liked the book, because the characters were nice and they cared for each other. This book was also not good because it kind of dodged the whole 9-11 part.

Have you ever skipped school to see someone who crushed your dreams?
In I Survived the Attacks of September 11,2001. Lucas was a football player. But he got to many concussions for his age. Uncle Benny thought that football was a good idea for Lucas and uncle Benny was the one that thought Lucas should quit football. So Lucas skips school to talk to uncle Benny. As they were discussing his future in football, an event happened above them that changed both of their lives forever and showed them what was important in life. Read the book to see what Lucas has to do to survive.
I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001. Is one of my favorite chapter books. I really like how the author wrote this book based on a true story. Lauren Tarshis really makes you feel like you were part of the event. When I was reading this book I couldn't put it down. The author did a really good job of the word choice. Lauren Tarshis is one of my favorite authors because she is very descriptive with her word choice.

I love this book. In fact I'm going to read the I survived..... The Battle of Gettysburg. I think these books are a great way for kids to get interested in History. In fact, with the pictures, and the author's attention to detail and thoroughness, young children are more inclined to get into reading real time events and this will pave the way for a brighter tomorrow. This is just another way to get kids interested in reading and literacy, which is the backbone of many other subjects. Five stars for this series of books, and thanks to the author for listening to her readers, as 9/11 marks an important event in our history.

my son really enjoys these books. I like the fact he is learning and reading at the same time. I feel it is better than just reading for fun alone. Not that there is anything wrong with reading for fun just that I like to see him excited about and hear him explain the history he learned to me. He is always asking more questions about the event after he reads the book. I feel it is an easy book to read as I've never heard him complain. Also, he is just and average reader and if anything doesn't enjoy reading, which makes these books even better in my opinion.

By Lauren Zelinske: As a 9 year old reading this book, it helped me understand better what happened on that day. I was able to picture in my mind easily because there was so much detail. Sometimes throughout the book I felt that I was there when it happened. I really felt bad for Uncle Benny when he got hurt. I would be scared if I was Lucas because when it happened I wouldn't know what to do and would probably have gotten hurt. I would recommend this book to other kids because they would have so much fun reading it and understanding of September 11th.

This book is very good. Buddy isn't a very strong reader, and it's not his favorite subject. This book/series interested Buddy, so I was on board with it. The book is well-written and he is able to read most of the words on his own. The words he didn't know were 'just enough' of a challenge for him. As the two of us read through this book, Buddy asked questions about the story and some of the events that happened that day. The questions and answers in the back of the book were excellent (including "Why I wrote this story"). It was a good conversation and a 'teaching moment' about a tough memory. I've bought the whole series for Buddy, and am looking forward to reading and learning with him.

I can't review this book based on my own reading of it. I am a 6th grade teacher and was collecting books about big events in each decade of American history. I chose this one for the 2000-2010 years and the boys in my class are passing it around and some want to read it again later. It seems a little over simplistic (watered down) for such a terrifying event in our history- but it is written for young kids and so is a good introduction to what happened on 9 - 11. A good find for me.

I liked this book because it helped me learn about 9/11. One thing the author did well was she made many characters. The most important part was when the plane crashed into the Twin Towers. My favorite character is Lucas because he is the main character. I would recommend this book because it helps you learn.

Lauren Tarshis describe the book I Survived The Attacks of September 11,2001 as like you were right there watching it as it happened. The genre was realistic fiction. The book fit into a mystery because they are wondering what really happened. I liked the book because you could make you go through the eyes of the firefighters there. The book was serious.
The setting of the book is the World Trade Center. The author makes the book come alive. I felt like I was a firefighter. I could easily close my eyes and it feels like I'm in the shoes of the main character. You could see papers falling from the sky like confetti falling from the sky.

I think everyone knows about the Twin Towers in New York City. I Survived the Attacks of 9/11 had a great beginning. It has exciting thrilling and interesting. " Lucas is a 11 year-old boy that loves to play football. They never go back to football and it never felt like the boy was in any danger. Not to mention everyone survived and two of the characters were fire fighters and one of them was in the building. I was also confused about the football game at the end and didn't know what was going on. I'm not really going to talk more about him or not I'm really giving the story away to you guys. But I must say that I learned some cool facts at the end of the book. I strongly recommend this book to people that like realistic fiction and historical fiction. This book is for boys, girl, I think any person can read it.

I give this book a 4 because it was very adventurous .I think it was cool that the author gave Lucas a happy ending and let uncle Benny live. It was also cool that when the plane hit the twin towers the a was on a plane but also scary. It was a very scary day for a lot of people. I liked that the author wrote this book because it was very easy for kids like me to understand what happened on 9/11.my name is Emma and i am in 3rd grade.

I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001 gets 5 stars from me, FINALLY a book my son enjoyed reading!! It has been very difficult trying to find books that he would read. I have tried lots of different books and subjects to no avail.
I enjoyed hearing him read aloud the story of Lucas and his uncle Benny. I had him stop a various spots in the book so we could discuss the events that were taking place, the emotions that Lucas may be feeling and what may happen next. We both were surprised by the ending.
The I Survived books are an entertaining way to learn about actual events in History.

I love this book. I am a third grade teacher and just read this book to my book group. They really enjoyed that it gives real facts about what actually happened on September 11th. I loved that they made this easy for 3rd graders to understand. It was very appropriate for their age. They also loved that Lucas had a happy ending.

This is a pretty good book. It gives you the historical knowledge about the event while giving you a story for you to dive into. I dont typically like historical fiction but this book was not all informational like a documentary, it gave you a sense of what someone would feel. It made it enjoyable. If there was one aspect of this that I didn't like, it is the fact that it gave you a little less setting description than I liked. It gave a glance of it and went into it a little but I wanted to here more, there is a lot of stuff in New York. Overall, it was a good book.

This book was a great way for my 7 year old son to learn about Sept. 11 for the first time. I love that Ms. Tarshis handled such a tragic event gently, but still delivered an exciting and moving story. We will be seeking out every book in the series because they are fun for my son and I like that he is learning about historical events.

I have now read all the i Survived books and i found that what really made this book a five star is that it, like all the other i Survived books, is that it brought back to life, September 11th. When 9/11 happened i was only five years old so i forgot the horror and shock of that day and this book brought that back.

I honestly loved this book! But I thought more could be put into it. It is a page turner and exciting learning this. But Lauren Tarshis could of had Lukas inside the building to describe what was inside maybe to have a better kick of having Lukas survive just to mke it more interesting. My absolute opinion think of this as 4 an a 1/2 stars. Great book just thought there could of been more. Also she can have a part section book where there are different kids in the other locations say Washington D.C with the pentagon or a kid in Shanksville, Pennsylavania s again great book love it plase read it great book. Good job Mrs. Tarshis!!!!!!! :)

I think the author should have added more action because in the book in Hurricane Katrina the boy almost died way more times than this one. But i do like it and I love the series, which I would give 5 stars. (reviewer is eight- mom typed comments).
