as we are from Joplin my kids had to have this book. There were a few mistakes, such as: it says we are from Southeast MO, but we are in Southwest MO. There wasn't 150 some people that died in tornado, ended up 161 that died. I wish people were more careful about their facts before they publish. it would be 5 stars but for not fact checking i'm giving it a 4 start

This I survived book about the Gettysburg war. I m glad that I was not born in 1865! I was so sad that so many soldiers had lost there lives. I m glad president Lincoln ended slavery. It's horrible that slaves would be beaten and could learn to read or write. That s not fair or right. So please purchase this book and know about all this sad and happy moments in this book. You won't regret getting this book!!!

A poor excuse for a "you were there" account of someone who lived through the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. I was expecting a first person account not a historical fiction that spent several chapters on the lead up to the earthquake. Don't waste your money.

Just like all the other I survived books, my son has gobbled them up within an hour or so. I've never read them myself so I can't testify to how graphic they are but just wanted to pass along that my son totally approves.

I have always been curious about this series. There are 17 books in the I Survived series, each relating a fictional story about characters involved in all sorts of historical events and disasters. The books cover many different events ranging from the more modern (9/11) to events way back in history (The Destruction of Pompeii in 79 AD). I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg is the 7th book in the series. Each book is a stand alone story, so it isn't necessary to read the series in order.

The basics: Thomas and his little sister are slaves on a southern plantation. In order to avoid being sold like his older brother, Thomas and the little girl run away from the plantation. They are scared that slave hunters will find them and that they will be severely punished for running away. But, they run into Union Army soldiers and go with them. But, they aren't safe. The soldiers are preparing for a big battle at Gettysburg, PA. The story relates what Thomas and his sister saw and experienced during the big battle that killed more than 20,000 men.

I listened to the audiobook version of this story. It's a quick listen at just under 1.5 hours in length. Mia Barron narrates. She reads at a nice pace and has an easily understood voice with good inflection. I have hearing loss but was easily able to hear and understand her. After the story about Thomas and his sister, there is an afterward from the author, Lauren Tashis. She talks about how she researched the battle for this book and she shares some information about the civil war and the battle. Also included is a reading of the Gettysburg address. I am impressed. Much research and thought went into this book, and it's a great educational tool for use with students or kids at home. The language and explanations are age appropriate, and the story relates the battle in terms that children will understand. The cover art is wonderful!

I can't wait to read more of this series! This was an interesting and very well-written fictional account of the battle.

This installment is not as thrilling or engaging as the others and is probably my least favorite in the series so far. Like all the others, the book starts right in the middle of the action. This time, though, I just didn't feel connected to main character yet.

Thomas and his sister Birdie are running away from their lives as slaves to the north, yearning to be free. When they run right into a battle, Thomas thinks all hope is lost and they will be captured and sold. Instead, the Union soldiers take them in and shelter and protect them. On the way, though, the company will have to first go to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Will Thomas and Birdie survive the worst battle of the civil War?

These books take familiar or oft-referred to pieces of US history and make them accessible and interesting to young readers. This is a great way to introduce 'new' readers to historical fiction. It is a great series for reluctant, male adolescent readers. It is not a dry, history textbook kind of read. These books put kids right in the middle of the action. It is a quick and easy read. This one is not too bloody or violent, even though is it about a battle int he war. You do not have to read these books in order. There is a different character and situation for every book. It is a series that is checked out constantly in my classroom. I can never keep any of the titles in stock. It is great for grades 3rd and up into 8th grade, especially for boys. Which would be my next question for the author: Why no girls as main characters?

Imagine you are in a huge fire in a huge city and you barely survive! I survived the great Chicago fire by: Lauren Tarshis. There is a little boy named Oscar Starling Eleven years old and he has to survive a fire and it starts in a barn. I say people should read this book because they can see what happened in the past and experience the future and go to those places.

There was a boy named Oscar starlings and at 11:30pm There was a huge fire in downtown Chicago. Oscar had to escape in a huge city that starts in a barn and spreads into the city. I like the beginning because it starts in a barn and spreads into the city. What I didn’t like is that is has all the action and then no action.

Oscar went down into a subway 39 minutes later and he stayed down there. He stayed down there for a while. I like that he was being smart and going somewhere. What I didn’t like is that there was so much people down in the subway.

In the end of the story Oscar finds his mom and it starts to rain when the fire is still going and then… I like it because it was a happy ending. What I didn’t like is that they were all soaked and hungry.

The lesson is always be prepared. One of my questions were what happened to all the construction and the rubble of the buildings falling? I challenge you to read this book to see what happens at the end.

To put my opinions in context, you should know that I am trained as an elementary teacher and tutor budding readers in my spare time.

This book tells the story of Leo, a young paperboy in San Fransisco in 1906. Leo lives on his own in a boarding house; what has happened to his parents is unknown. He carries in his pocket a small gold nugget which his grandfather found after traveling west during the gold rush. His grandfather's experiences guide Leo through what to do when faced with challenges he faces. For instance, when his friend, Morris, is trapped by fire in a dead-end alley, Leo remembers his grandfather's experience surviving a forest fire by wetting his clothes and body down and running through the flames. Remembering this, Leo figures out how to rescue Morris. Along the way, Leo discovers that he is a strong, brave and special young man. He learns a couple of other important lessons.

1. Initially, Leo views Morris as a pest and worse. He is a younger boy who is always hanging around Leo. Morris even spills the beans about Leo's nugget, leading to a confrontation with bullies Fletch and Wilkie in which the nugget is stolen. But, Leo learns that Morris, who has been abandoned by his uncle, is simply desperate for friends and will do anything to be liked. Leo also realizes that Morris is the one person who has always had his back. A valuable lesson about friendship.

2. Leo is faced with a tough decision when he finds one of the bullies trapped in rubble. Should he try to save him, or just take care of himself and Morris? When Leo decides to help Wilkie he gains an ally in surviving, and in getting his precious nugget back from Fletch. In fact, the two become good friends.

In the end, Leo sells his nugget and sets Wilkie up to start a new life. Leo and Morris head to New York to find the younger boy's surviving relatives.

The only complaint I have about this book is that I wish it had focused more on the earthquake.

This book is recommended for ages seven and up. I think this book would be better suited to a fourth or fifth grader. I would also highly recommend this book and series for reluctant readers. The fast-paced, exciting plot will keep even the most reluctant reader engaged.

This book starts very interestingly and is about a real event, although it is not a real story.
On a scale from 1-100, I would probably rate it a 92.2. Also, it is just that I love the I Survived book series, but I recommend it to you guys too. One time, I actually thought I was one of the characters (in a different I Survived book) because I got so immersed in it. There are a lot of these books, and I've only just started on my third. I would recommend it to everybody, but especially those who love adventure and suspense books. It is about a brother and sister (Thomas and Birdie) who are slaves for Mr.Knox and plan to escape. Will they succeed or get thrashed to pieces by a bullet?
( It's kind of obvious if you look at the cover.)

I SURVIVED THE JOPLIN TORNADO, 2011 by Lauren Tarshis
Boys especially will like this latest in the I SURVIVED series for early chapter book readers.
Dexter, 11, has been invited to go along with a group of tornado chasers when they are caught by the deadliest tornado in 50 years. The exciting story presents a wealth of information about tornados, tornado chasers, preparedness and safety.
The reading level is about a 3-4th grade level. The story is exciting enough for 6th graders. Girls will like it as much as boys. It is scary enough to be thrilling, but also has a happy ending. Parents and teachers will like the information in the end notes.

This I survived series is one of the most popular in my library. And it's not hard to see why. The books are relatively short and action-packed. This one revolves around an 11-year-old boy named Dex who misses his brother Jeremy who is a Navy SEAL. His experiences with Dr. Gage as they track the coming storms provide a look at not only the science of weather tracking, but the dangers of storm chasing. When Dex and Dr. Gage get caught in the massive tornado, they have to find a way to survive the savagery of the storm. Can Dex step up like his Navy SEAL brother or are they doomed to lose their lives to the storm? Tarshis always does a great job of providing just enough vivid detail to intrigue readers without overwhelming them, which makes this series great for reluctant readers as well as more experienced readers. The illustrations add a nice touch, helping readers visualize the challenges that Dex faces. A great addition to an already compelling series.

Would you like to read an interesting book that creates lots of suspense? Than you better make sure you read this book. The book is based on the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. The earthquake is real but the characters are not. That makes this book historical fiction. The main character is Leo. Leo is a 13-year-old newspaper boy in San Francisco. Leo cares a lot for people. He is also very kind. Leo got picked on to get bullied but he never bullied/picked on anyone. I think that the moral of the story is DON’T GIVE UP. It says in the book that they didn’t stop trying to get Wilkie out of the rubble. It also says they didn’t stop trying to survive.
One day Leo finishes selling his paper like a regular day when the neighborhood bullies Fletch and Wilkie take his most prized possession, a gold nugget that was passed down by his grandfather. Leo and Morris make a plan to
Steal his nugget back in the middle of the night. Little did they know that something so terrible was about to unleash.
I recommend this book to 4th-6th graders. I recommend this book to them because for 2nd graders they might not yet understand the book yet and the book will be too easy for 7th graders. I would give it 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. I give it 4.5 stars because it was a good book but it was boring at some places.

If you have not yet read any of Lauren Tarshis' many (catastrophe) books you couldn't go wrong starting with this one. Each of the books are short, but well-written, historically accurate and very interesting. Tarshis clearly researches her material very thoroughly and takes each of these deadly incidents directly to her readers through an intense/descriptive narrative, almost re-creating and bringing each one back to life. This is an interesting genre, and though it may not appeal to all readers, it is likely one that will appeal to many others.

In the book I survived the San Francisco earthquake by Lauren Tarishis. In the book there are about 100 pages with barely any pictures. The genre of the book is realistic fiction. The ages I recommend is 7 to 11 years old.
The main character is Leo lives in a boarding house in a boarding house with another kid named Morris and his uncle. Leo sells newspapers for a living. Leo always has a gold nugget with him because it is passed down in the family. One day he saw Morris on the front step of the boarding house and looked lonely. When Leo tried to get by he felt bad so he shoed him his gold nugget and told him stories about his grandpa. Morris told people about it though and that's when he loses his gold
My favirote part about the book is when the earthquake hits so surprisingly and it destroys the and it destroys the gas lines so the street will be burnt in about an hour. The building falls apart and it is made out of bricks. Leo is getting buried under the bricks. Soon he will be burnt alive. Will he get out?
I recommend this book for you because it has a lot of detail and a little short so it will be good for children that are not advanced readers. It has a good plot and a good ending and at the begging it grabs you're attention.
Some books by this author is I survived the battle of gettyngsburg and I survived the bombing of pearl harbor.

I will be talking about the book I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake. It is by somebody named Lauren Tarshis. It is about somebody who survives an earthquake. It is about a boy who survived an earthquake. In the story he is homeless because his parents died. He has a gold nugget somebody stole it. He got it back and got out of there with his friends. He sold the gold nugget and he bought train tickets for him and his friends. I liked it because it had action and adventure. Another reason why I liked it was it had surprises. It was very detailed. It had mean people and brave people. I think other people will like it because it is not scary at all. In all I think it is a good book.

I've always been a history fanatic, especially around disasters, so when my son brought this book home from school to read for the week, I was intrigued! Needless to say, this book is amazing. We finished reading it, and now I'm hooked. I've now added all of the books to my wish list. I know they are written for kids, but heck - I can't wait to read them all!

This is a wonderful, high interest book that takes place during one of the most significant time periods in our nation's history. It is action packed and sets the stage well for further discussion and research with young students. It is not graphic, but does touch upon the realities of war and slavery.I won't go into detail here as to the plot, as previous reviews did a great job at that, and the summary is in the description. The target audience is 2nd-4th grade, with a reading level of 4th grade(Lexile:660L,DRA:40,Guided Reading:S). That said, my 2nd grader had no issue reading it, either with fluency or comprehension. There are some words that he needed help with, but they were mainly content words. It is a very well written book, and I will be ordering copies for my classroom from the whole series.

This was a very good, informative read. Although this is a youth book, I learned more about tornados. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in tornados or the actual event of the Joplin tornado. This is the first book by this author that I have read, but will be looking for the others in this series.

I enjoy reading the "I Survived" series. Ms Tarshis takes the real event in real timing and uses fictional characters to relive the tragic event. Obviously, I do not remember the 1909 Earthquake, I do however remember the 1989 Earthquake that occurred during the World Series. Reading books/articles and watching documentaries on the 1909 San Francisco Earthquake are sad, yet inspiring at how human spirit, the desire to live and rebuild was so strong.

I realize this book is geared more toward the younger generation, but I think anybody of any age would enjoy it. Well done Ms Tarshis.

I really enjoyed this book. The setting of this book is in San Francisco, California in 1906 during the earthquake while President Roosevelt was in office. The main characters of the book are Leo, Morris, Wilkie, and Fletch.
Leo was a kind boy because he never hurt anybody and he never picked a fight. Leo lived in a boardinghouse with his father until he passed away. His Father always told stories about his grandpop which gave him courage. His grandfather passed a golden nugget to his father who passed the nugget to him.
Morris was a nice and annoying kid. He was a tall skinny kid. He asked a bunch of questions and always had a bunch of facts to share even when Leo didn't want to hear them. He lived with his uncle who gambled away all their money and was hardly ever home.
Wilkie was a fat kid and a bully. He bullied everybody. He stole money, watches, and other treasures from people. He went to jail and wasn't afraid of the police.
Fletch was a bully and a wingman to Wilkie. Together they made an unstoppable team of bullies.
Leo had a gold nugget that Wilkie and Fletch stole. In the dark, Leo disgused himself as the ghost of Corey Drew in order to get his nugget back from the bullies. It almost worked until Morris showed up and ruined everything. Then the bullies started to beat them up until the great earthquake began! Fletch ran and left them in the building. Leo and Morris had to help Wilkie escape because he was stuck. They were barely able to get out of the building. Once they got out, they saw fire everywhere and people were crying. Wilkie realized that his buddy had left him to die so he decided to help Leo and Morris get the gold nugget.
They had to go through the burning alley to get to the nugget inside the boardinghouse. Morris ran into the fire first. Leo soaked a blanket in water and covered himself and Wilkie. They went screaming for Morris through the fire and found him stuck in a hole. Wilkie pulled him out. As they were trying to escape they saw Fletch. Wilkie took the bag of treasures and started to leave Fletch to die but instead saved him. Wilkie left Fletch with firefighters and went away with Leo and Morris. After three days of living in a tent in the park and having little to eat, the three boys got on a train and went to Sacramento, California. Leo sold his gold nugget and bought train tickets for everyone. Wilkie went to Washington to play football. Leo and Morris went to New York to live with Morris's cousins. They said they would always be friends and would see each other again.

This is the second "I survived......" book I've read thus far. In fact, like I've said before, these books are a great way to get young readers interested in our history. Afterall, they are our future, and the best way to learn of a better tomorrow, is to learn from our past. Although the main characters were fiction, the history of the Battle of Gettysburg was not. However, when you put a child into the action of what really happened from 1861-1865 in the Civil War, the young reader will then become more interested. Again, thanks to the author for making history interesting to not only America's youth, but my children as well.

I'm 12 so to me this book is a Little young for me but I loved it. I liked how this book showed how terrible terrible civil war was. It was very easy for me to understand and it showed what a slave had to go through. Also it described the battle of Gettysburg the perfectly . I've read any books on Gettysburg I've been there and she really gives a Good prospective of what happened. Finally, she listed the facts at the end which helps other people learn about the civil war.

my son really enjoys these books. I like the fact he is learning and reading at the same time. I feel it is better than just reading for fun alone. Not that there is anything wrong with reading for fun just that I like to see him excited about and hear him explain the history he learned to me. He is always asking more questions about the event after he reads the book. I feel it is an easy book to read as I've never heard him complain. Also, he is just and average reader and if anything doesn't enjoy reading, which makes these books even better in my opinion.

This book is great for 3rd and above, and the book expresses what life as a slave or person in the era was like.
Prepare to cry at the end of the book. I want you to read it now because it is an excellent book.
And has loveable characters. It’s a perfect book to read when you’re young or older, it provides historic parts,
It’s almost true. It’s realistic fiction and is a very good book in my opinion.

That’s when the Titanic started to sink. Everybody who was on the Titanic thought that if they jumped off they would survive… Read this book to find out the ending.

Southern History Alert. This book is slanted toward the point of view that the Civil War was fought to end slavery, and clearly makes the rebel soldiers from the south into the bad guys. While my grandson enjoys these stories, I hope that the author either avoids political messages in her books or presents both sides for the reader to decide.

Do you think you can survive the bloodiest battle of the American civil war????

This is a journey that begins with an eleven year old Thomas and his younger sister, Purdie. They are slaves in 1863 trying to find a way to become free and survive during a very scary time. Together there journey they meet a very compassionet union soldier named Henry. Following the underground railroad and the northern star, Henry tries to lead them to safety with his wife so she can teach Thomas and Birdie to read and write. Getting to New York is not easy for them since they are being chased by huntsmen who have been sent to capture them for the their slave owner. After Birdie is kidnapped, Henry must save his sister no matter what.
Do you think you have the guts to save your sister and survive the bloodiest battle of the American civil war??? This is a great book, full of suspense and twist and turns. This is a must read book to follow Henry through his epic survival.

his book is about a boy and his mom in Chicago. When they get there a gang of boys steal his suitcases. Then, the Chicago Fire happens. Will he ever survive?
I think this book was good but a little too fast. First, it was pretty good at the beginning. But, after you read a little the fire immediately happens and the story starts getting a little too fast and it’s hard to keep track.
I recommend this book to people who want learn more about natural disasters. They would like this a lot because this can help them learn what natural disasters can do.

I am writing a middle grade novel about the Underground Railroad, so was excited to find this book at my grandchildren's school book fair. Lauren Tarshish's chapter book about a brother and sister who escape slavery and find compassion and safety with Union soldiers on their way to fight at Gettysburg is exciting, compelling, and a great way for kids to learn history. This fictional account allows the reader to understand the horrors of slavery and the cost that soldiers paid to purchase freedom for enslaved Americans. It is easy to read and perfect for boys as well as girls. I highly recommend it.

I Survived the Joplin Tornado, 2011 by Lauren Tarshis is about an 11 year old boy from Joplin who gets invited to travel with a storm chaser into Kansas to track an incoming storm. While on this trip, they run into a bigger problem, the tornado heading right toward Joplin. I highly recommend this book to students 3rd-6th grade. Boys will love this book, as it is very adventurous and of course, has a boy as the main character. This is a great historical fiction book to have in a classroom library or a personal library at home.

I really enjoyed the book I survived- The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906. The setting is San Francisco, CA in the year 1906. I like how the book starts at the beginning of the disaster, but then flashes back 20 hours earlier so you can read the events leading up to it. The main plot involves Leo, a young newspaper boy, who finds himself in the middle of an earthquake. He must work alongside his friend to save a kid that bullied him and to get out alive. He helps a couple along the way to get safely too. The book describes how Leo has changed from the time his father gave him a gold nugget right before he died, up until the events of the earthquake. He was mostly concerned with keeping the nugget before the earthquake, but then he realizes he must sacrifice the nugget. He sells the nugget, and gives the money to the once bully, now friend, so he can buy a train ticket to a school where he can become a pro football player. Leo goes to live with his cousins and never forgets the day the earthquake hit. I liked book mostly because it is based on a real life event. I wasn't born then, but this book gave me a glimpse of a time long ago and into the disaster of the San Francisco earthquake. It's amazing to me that a boy as young as Leo had the strength to save not himself, but the lives of others. I highly recommend this book to others. I hope enjoy as much as me.

I Survived the Joplin Tornado is a great read for an elementary classroom. It will hook both girls and boys, for it is action-packed with lots of vivid details for painting the picture of the setting. It also provides students a history lesson, giving realistic details of the event of that day. It's message of strength and hope is alluded to throughout the book and provides for some thoughtful discussion in the classroom.

My son is 9 and he devours the books in this series. They are short, easy reading, that anyone (regardless of how much they love reading or like history) can get into. He asked me for this one and several others. The best is that he really absorbs the material and gets a great deal insight into how scary these types of events can be. However, its not so scary that he is turned off. In short, we've had great chats about these books.

The story was good. I think the book was useful because you can use a cool way to learn history. This was was fun too! But, there are unrealistic characters. Nobody is really like Fletch because he is too mean. (by: Percy)

This is actually one of the better ones in the series. The scene in the end where the tornado tries to suck the SUV off the ground with Dex and Dr. Gage inside, was actually quite exciting. I am sure it would be even more so for young readers. Pretty good!

This book does a great job of making the Civil War relatable for early elementary kids. My 3rd grade son was very interested in it and we have a day trip to Gettysburg planned thanks to this interest. The first person perspective and fast pace of the story make it very compelling for this age group.

"I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg, 1863" is an amazing book because of the story it tells. The story is of a boy named Thomas and his little sister, Birdie ran from their owner. They were by a stream and Confederate soldiers came by. They ran and hid in a bush. One of the soldiers saw them ( the following dots is how he got out of the situation)........... Union soldiers took them to their base and Thomas and Birdie marched with them to Gettysburg. Do you think they'll survive?
A reason I gave this book five stars is because of how Lauren Tarshis wrote her book. Everything was described and I could see a perfect picture in my head of every scene. Lauren Tarshis really knows how to paint a picture with her words.

I liked all of Lauren Tarshis books especially the I Survived series but this one is my favorite because it is very inspirational for a young boy to look up to his grandfather and father so much and beleive that he can accomplash anything if he set his mind to it. And every problem in the story the boy can find an answer to it just by looking back at his grandfather.

I enjoyed this book and it had a great storyline, but it seemed like the main plot just went by too fast. I was expecting more thorough descriptions of what was going on during the battle of gettysburg. Other than that i really enjoyed this book.i highly recommend it!
