Quite the introduction to a new series. I can saw up front that this series is very engaging and entertaining. The book has me amused from the very beginning with Jack's warning to all readers. So you easily feel like a part of the story.

Jack is your everyday teen. One day away from his 14th birthday and his whole life is about to go from ordinary to anything but. He meets some strange individuals and it attacked my a monster! Soon he hinds out he is wanted by the monsters (more officially known as the Creach) and now that he is "of age" all bets are off!

Few are who they seem to be. Teachers, family, and strangers all play vital roles in the 24 hours this book takes place in. That's right, by the way. This whole book takes place in approximately 24 hours! So even though it is short at just under 200 pages, it has a LOT going on!

Filled with action and adventure! This book is a great Young adult book that even some middle grades can enjoy. and what I liked is that it appeals to male readers, but can easily be enjoyed by females. That is very rare it seems nowadays. So I loved finding a book I can share with my younger brothers.

We get vampires, werewolves, zombies, harpies and more in this book. Jeff Gunhus really delivers us the monster race here! Luckily for Jack, he has some good, loyal friends. Although I wish I had been able to get a better feel for them. Sadly, the book was too short for that. Yet this book is more of a prelude of what is to come it seems. I look forward to continuing the series.

Jack awoke early one morning remembering the homework assignment he had forgotten to do the previous night. He laid in his bed and fell asleep again long enough to dream of Cindy…Oh Yes!. The dream ended weird, though. Aunt Sophie called him downstairs for breakfast. While getting ready for breakfast he noticed in the mirror that although he looked mostly the same, almost overnight his biceps looked a little more bulgy. The day just kept getting more weird and unusual.

On the eve and day of his fourteenth birthday, Jack learns a lot about himself – more than he wanted to know, yet with so many unanswered questions. Strangers seem to mistake him for Jack Templar, not as Jack Smith. Aunt Sophie and his friends – T-Rex and Will- is all the family he had in this world.

At School lunchtime, a situation occurred and everything just got worse as the day went on. Soon, Jack wasn’t sure who he could trust or what was real.

Because of the writer's literary ability, I must give him due credit. The characters he developed were indeed creative and well described. The situations presented were very realistically portrayed. The title and book cover are fitting.

This action packed, fast moving horror story, keeps the reader's interest. However, the author and publisher suggests an 8 year and older reading audience -I totally disagree! I strongly suggest at least a 13 year and older age group. When I was 9 years old I went to see Snow White then a short time later, Cinderella. The witches terrified me and impacted my dreams for years to come. Then when I was 12 years old, I watched the Werewolf of London on television. For nights afterwards, I awoke in the night with a clear vision of that creature in my doorway. I was terrified for years to go into the dark or to fall asleep at night.

I believe books like these have a strong, negative psychological impact, especially on young children’s minds. This was very well-written, adding to the negativity on younger one’s minds.

My review must offer the Four Stars rating this book deserves but my “matronly side” discourages parents to allow young children to read this because of the horrors within the pages.

*This book was sent to me in exchange for an HONEST review, of which I have given.

Do you have reluctant readers in your family? A reluctant reader is anyone who does not show interest in reading. There is a wide range within the category of reluctant readers. A reluctant reader may simply be a child who needs to be coaxed into reading texts. She may also be a child who vehemently refuses to read. While any child, young or old, male or female can be a reluctant reader the largest number of unenthusiastic readers are adolescent boys. Research shows that a good number of boys who were avid readers in the elementary grades become disinterested in reading during their middle school years.

Every parent and teacher wants their children to be avid readers. We know the benefits of reading and want our children to embrace it as we have. While many children do become excited and engaged in reading (especially in the primary grades), some are reluctant and disinterested. While a child may not show a natural interest in reading, this does not mean that he cannot become a skilled and even enthusiastic reader.

Sometimes young people, especially adolescents, become disengaged from reading because they lose interest in the content of the texts they are reading. Many traditional books assigned in schools as well as textbooks fail to capture the interest of today's children because they are used to fast paced movies, video games and Internet sites. Parents and teachers can employ high-interest reading materials to help spark an interest in reading in these children. High-interest texts are usually fairly non-traditional. They often focus on "edgy" topics or include a great deal of action.

These books are just what your reluctant reader needs! Move over Harry Potter, there's a new kid in town - Jack Templar. The story is a wonderful adventure of good vs. evil, with friends and enemies at each and every turn -- and there's a lot of turns. The twists and turns keep the reader on a roller coaster of entertainment in the way of JK Rowling. As an adult reader, I loved this book too almost as much as when I read the Harry Potter books growing up!

This book is well written, and I read it in one sitting yesterday! I would recommend it to anyone who loves the imagination and magic of this genre. Jack Templar: Monster Hunter is written for young adults but don't let that stop you from reading it - from the very first paragraph the reader is pulled in. Be prepared to hunt monsters with Jack Templar and his friends. Jack Templar: Monster Hunter is book number one of what will eventually be a seven book series, book number four just came out in October 2014. I cannot wait to pass it on to someone who would enjoy it as well.

The book was written by a father to encourage his eleven-year-old to become excited about reading. It worked, and he's now an avid reader. He wrote about his experience with his son in a book for parents called Reaching Your Reluctant Reader. This small parenting book is available online with 100% of author proceeds benefiting Toys For Tots Literacy Program. The story of his journey with his son was featured on the store here: https://www.the store.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1002658351.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Jack Templar Monster Hunter is a wildly entertaining and completely absorbing story about a teenage boy who is about to discover that his destiny includes hunting monsters.

Jack Smith is a pretty average teen. He enjoys hanging out with his friends, Will and T-Rex, and has a huge crush on a popular girl at school. Both of Jack's parents died when he was very young and his aunt took him and raised him as her own. Tomorrow is Jack's birthday and he will be 14. He figured he might feel a bit more grown-up, but the miraculous changes he's undergoing aren't what he expected. Little does he know, but his life is about to get a whole lot stranger. Can he face the challenges, "come what may?"

I love the imaginativeness of Jack Templar Monster Hunter. It is unlike anything I have read and the author's ingenuity easily pulled me in. Jack Smith is a likable character and he displays a great deal of honor as he challenges the evil monsters in order to protect his friends. The author also creatively uses humor to lighten the mood as he (or rather Jack) describes the horror that awaits those who dare to read the tale. I found the story to be well developed and thoughtout and am looking forward to reading what else is in store for our monster hunter.

I highly recommend picking up a copy.

Jack Templar Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus is an exciting, thrilling rollercoaster ride, hair-raising adventure that is written for boys but girls will love it too!
It begins with Jack Smith 13, an orphan, whose birthday is coming up and he lives with his Aunt Sophie. Jack's just an ordinary teenage boy, all that changes when he is attacked by a monster and he fights for his life! becoming Jack Templar Monster Hunter and Aunt Sophie turns out to be a monster, a good one! From therein the 24 hours that the book takes place Jack learns a lot of new things including he is from a long line of Monster Hunters, it is an explosive thrill ride with friends either leaving turning into monsters or joining him in his fight and the girls and boys who stand with him will guard him from anything befalling him, if they have anything to do with it!
The warning at the beginning of the book and the explosive first chapter just hook you, reel you in, and just like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson we have a mixed bag of companions girls and boys.. A very 3 dimensional story it is just like the story unfolds right in front of you with plot twists and things are not what they seem!
I really enjoyed this story that is classed as YA but I think it can be read by anyone from 12 upwards to 100 it holds your attention, is very well written, fast storyline as everything in the book takes place in only 24 hours. I think that it probably aimed at boys But girls will love it too because we have strong interesting females in the book, oh yes! we even have an evil school Principal and strange teachers and so many different enemies. I look forward to reading the next book in the series which I expect to be more than 200 pages. I highly recommend this book to everybody, 5 stars

Do you believe in monsters? I am not referring to those that hide in your closet or under your bed but the ones that are real....the wolves, vampires and zombies just to name a few. Jack Smith (Templar) is just an ordinary 13 year old kid until the day before his 14th birthday. Suddenly he is thrust into a world he never knew existed, one in which he must learn to fight against the monsters and he must learn to do this quickly because they are coming for him.

I found myself enjoying this read. I was drawn into the story of Jack and his friends, Will and T-Rex. Ordinary teens that are on the underside of the the "middle class" meaning, they are a bit odd and get picked on. We as adults need to remember that these are kids we are reading about, they may not respond to a situation like we think they should. I think that Jeff Gunhus does an excellent job of getting across what the story is about. I believe he has colorful characters and a wide variety of monsters to entertain us. That being said, my favorite character outside of Jack has to be Hester. She is a very cool lady. My least favorite had to be T-Rex. His proclivity to picking his nose is just disgusting and I don't believe was necessary to the story.

Jack Templar Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus
5 STARS

The Templar Chronicles: Book One

I liked reading Jack Templar Monster Hunter and will continue reading the next book.
While Jack is telling the story he cuts back a few times to warn his readers that just
by reading it could put your life in danger. It draws you into the story more.

Children under 14 can't be killed either human or monster unless you first harm a monster.
Jack will turn 14 tomorrow and is body is already changing. He is getting faster, stronger,
and can fight.

Thier are a lot of different types of monsters in this book. Bullys, vampires.oblins, werewolves,
zombies and sirens, plus others.

Jack has two close friends T-rex and Will. He was raised by his Aunt after his parents died.
He meets Eva that tells him somethings but not a lot about what is going on.
I like the characters, they are not perfect kids, they have faults that gets them in trouble but
they also have a lot of good traits. Thier friendships make them stronger.
Lots of action, drama. The book ends in a good place and I hope more is too come in the future.
If your not afraid of monsters this will be a good book to read.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give it a honest review when done by netgalley.

Jack can't remember his parents. They died when he was little, and he was raised by his Aunt Sophie. Jack is almost fourteen, and he wakes up the day before his birthday feeling like a new person. He can't believe how strong he feels and soon finds out that he can run faster, too. On the way to school, he encounters a few odd characters, and the day only continues to get more bizarre. After receiving a suspension from his principal, Jack heads home worried that his aunt will be disappointed in him. On his way he meets Eva, a stranger who tells him that he is a monster hunter, the chosen one from a long line of monster hunters. Not only that, but there are monsters gathering nearby, waiting for him to turn fourteen, the age when they are free to kill him. It seems the Lord of the Creach (Lord of the Monsters) has a personal problem with Jack and wants him destroyed. When Jack thinks Eva's life is in danger he tries to save her. Unfortunately, this changes everything. Will Jack be able to save Eva? What does he unleash when he tries to kill the beasts? Is Jack really the chosen one? Who is the Lord of the Creach and why is he after Jack? The forces of good and evil are stacked against each other, and you will want to find out who prevails!

I recommend Jack Templar: Monster Hunter to anyone 10 and up. Monster hunting can get a little violent and younger children may be a little nervous! Plus, Jack is turning fourteen and children under the age of ten may not enjoy hearing about his crush on Cindy Adams. The author also warns kids not to read this book if they are afraid of monsters! I liked the wonderful descriptions and I feel that I know Jack, Eva, and the other characters and places described in the book. Jack seems like a good guy, and I appreciate the fact that he isn't perfect and doesn't always make the best decisions. The action starts right from the first chapter and doesn't let up until the book ends. This is the first book in a series, and I look forward to reading the rest of them. The good news is the author doesn't leave the book off with a cliffhanger! Fans of The Percy Jackson series will want to get to know Jack!

I read both Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter Academy for this review, so these are my thoughts on both books. I have to confess that my kids haven't read these yet (they just haven't had time recently because they are in the middle of other series), but I have no doubt in my mind that my 10-year-old son will LOVE these books and I'm pretty sure my 9-year-old daughter will enjoy them as well. (I'll post an update once they finish them).

What I loved:
The fun and witty intros. Both books start out with a really amusing warning about how monsters are real and cautioning you that reading the book will draw monsters to you so that you will never be safe again. (Warning - if you have kids who are easily scared, this might actually get to them!). I thought it was great fun and a fantastic way to draw kids into the story, making them feel like they could actually be a part of it.
The action. These books are full of monster fighting action, sure to please your average middle grade boy. The fighting sometimes gets intense. (Although it's not gory or age inappropriate, if you have a sensitive child, these scenes could be bothersome). The book lives up to its name - Jack is a monster hunter and he ends up battling LOTS of monsters.
The high stakes. Unlike in some books for middle graders, everyone is not safe. In fact, characters die. The heightened stakes make those action scenes that I just mentioned that much more intense because you're never quite sure if everyone is going to make it.
The characters. Jack is a character that lots of boys can connect to - an average boy put into extraordinary circumstances. Even though he suddenly gains immense strength, he doesn't instantly turn into a fearless hero. Instead he sometimes lets others down and he struggles with whether or not he can handle the pressure. Meanwhile, his friend Will is oozing confidence and courage, sometimes making Jack feel that he can't possibly be the hero everyone is searching for. Their other friend, T-Rex is a fun character who suffers from anxiety and low self-esteem (partly from being bullied). I especially loved him in the second book, when he truly discovered his importance and owned it!

What I didn't like:
Its similarities to that "other" series. I have to confess that I was a bit afraid that this series would be a Lightning Thief copycat, just using monsters instead of mythological creatures. I was especially worried when I saw that book two took place at a monster fighting academy (hmmm... Camp Halfblood anyone?). However, I will say that, in the end, while some comparisons could certainly be made, I felt that the Jack Templar books stood on their own. These books will definitely appeal to fans of Riordan, but they aren't a rehash of his books. It's a win-win as far as I'm concerned!
Very few adult influences. Besides Jack's aunt (who is present only in the first book) and the leader of the Monster Academy (in the second book), there are no other adults in these books (unless you count the enemies!). Will's parents are abusive (though this is not directly seen in the books, it is referred to) and T-Rex's grandma is senile. While I understand how these things helped propel the story, I kind of wished that there had been one or two more positive examples of adults in the kids' lives.

I would highly recommend these books to anyone who loves adventure and fantasy. Riordan fans will definitely love this series! Honestly, I felt like I had to be very nitpicky to even come up with negatives about this book - it's exactly what a middle grade fantasy should be. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment! 5/5 Stars.

Jack Smith was going to be fourteen tomorrow, and he felt different. In the bathroom. he noticed the change in his face and bulging arms as if he lifted weights, then ran to the basement to lift weights. His aunt Sophie called down to him that breakfast was ready and he zipped up the stairs, ate foe five kids, then ran down the long driveway. He was late to school but decided to slam a ball in the goal left at a empty home, and he slammed it down with no problem as he thought he had flown through the air! He turned and ran to school only to be tripped by an old Albino looking man. What was really strange was that he didn't fall face first on the sidewalk, but twisted his body in a Kung Fu move to land on his feet! Then the man mumbled something about having fun on his birthday.........

Jeff Gunhus pens book one of the monster hunter series that grabbed my attention at his first warning of not to read the book! Monster Hunters is not only for teens, but adults as well who love the paranormal world and I can't wait to see what happens next!!

My honest thoughts and opinions on this wonderful, mysterious, fantasy and a book that I would give to any one of my grandchildren to read, is a guaranteed book and author that I would recommend to all who love some amazing fantasy in their lives.

Okay with that being said, you can understand that this was an amazing book for me. I really loved the characters and the story line is so well written that it flows so well from the start to the finish.

To say that I enjoyed this book is an understatement. I was enthralled in Jacks life. At times I was scared and then at times I was rooting him on to finish his task at hand. He kept me so engrossed that there was nothing that could take my attention away from it.

I truly believe that my first grandson that is 8yrs old will also love this book. And to that fact I will be purchasing him one for Christmas and will also make sure he keeps up with any new books by Jeff Gunhus on this line. Not to mention that I have several other grandchildren that I will also purchase this book for them.. two being girls that I feel will also enjoy reading this book.

Alright, as you know I do not really get into the actually book, due to the fact that I feel You need to check it out for yourself.

So due to the above, I am giving this book a Breath of Life ratings of:

Five Clock Rating!!!

I have gotten addicted to young adult adventurer novels and it takes me back to the days of playing pretend with my school friends and getting to be inventive and creative at all hours of the day.

When I read Jack Templar - Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus, it had all the elements of the ultimate adventure story. Super powers, seemingly unbeatable enemies, friends who stick with you until the end...everything you need to get taken away.

It starts out with Jack Templar's 14th birthday. He lives with his aunt after both parents passed away, and while he loves his aunt, he has always had questions about what exactly happened to his father. All those points aside, it starts out being a normal birthday. Yet, until he realizes how...different he feels. Stronger. After sneaking away to the basement, more than a few effortless weight training sessions later, Jack knows something is strange and really, really cool.

Once at school, everything goes as normal as planned, until the lunch room and a fight breaks out. Worse, it's between Jack's two best friends and the school bully. Using his new strength, Jack sticks up for his friends and takes down the bully. This leaves everyone in shock though, because suddenly, Jack isn't who he used to be.

An hour later, Jack is being confronted by the Principal and he's sent home. With a mysterious and sinister birthday wish from the Principal, who claims she's been waiting a long time for this moment. As Jack walks away from the school, it's then he sees her change from a wicked evil woman, to a frightening creature.

Monsters are after Jack.

This is just the beginning of course and Jack find a new level of terror in the hometown he thought he knew. But with his best friends and new band of monster hunters beside him, life becomes a whole heck of a lot more interesting.

I enjoyed every word of this book. The main character also takes breaks to speak directly to us, and warning us of the book's dangers. Because once you learn about Monster's, you see them everywhere.

This well written exciting book is perfect for anyone (kids and adults) who love a fun, exciting story. I was taken away by every word and suddenly my bus ride wasn't so dull anymore.

This book was full of,adventure and excitement. Let me introduce you to Jack Templar, he is an orphan who discovers just before his fourteenth birthday that he came from a long line of monster hunters.

There's a warning in the begining of the book that tells you, if you read this book the monsters can find you. I think the readers will find this fun and amusing as I did. It gives you the opportunity to stop and not read any further.

Jacks aunt Sophie raised him, you will find out more about her in the book. Jack has two best friends Will and Trex, he also meets Eva who is a member of the Black Guard who helps him learn about the changes his body is going through as he reaches his fourteenth birthday when he will become prey for all the monsters.

This book is a must read for pre-teens and older. You will have fun reading about his many adventures and battles, especially with Ren Lucre Lord of the Vampires.

"Jack Templar Monster Hunter" by Jeff Gunhus keeps the reader on the edge of the chair for the whole story. Never has any thirteen-year-old had a fourteenth birthday to rival the amazing circumstances Jack and his friends find themselves embroiled in.

Mild mannered and almost geeky Jack Smith, awakens one morning to find changes happening to his thirteen-year-old body that he can't explain. But these changes are not the ordinary signs of growing up - they are much more baffling and, frankly, unexplainable. When Jack makes mincemeat out of the school bully, he -- and everyone else -- knows that something very different is in the offing.

Suddenly, on the very eve of his fourteenth birthday, Jack is plunged into a world fraught with very believable gremlins, zombies, Minotaur harpies and all manner of "Creach," Jack must navigate and use the art and power of a Monster Hunter - something he's never even heard of - as he and his friends Eva, Will and T-Rex are pursued by the evil and very nasty Ren Lucre.

Vivid imagery and tight, fast-paced narrative make this first book of a series a great read not only for middle teens, but for any reader who enjoys suspense a little on the darker side. There is a website associated with this book that is interactive and quite entertaining. Looking forward to more adventures with Jack Templar Monster Hunter!

This book is written for middle aged children, by Jeffrey Gunhus. I'm not a middle aged child but perhaps the book brings out the child in you. SO read it and be a child for a while.

The beginning is with an orphan, Jack Smith. He lives in the little town of SunnyVale with his Aunt Sophie. Supposedly his parents died when he was little. He knows nothing of his past.

As with all of us, when we get to be a teen our whole world seems to change. Everything you think is one way turns out to be just the opposite.

This book is written so realistic in a lot of ways. You can place yourself as the characters in the book. Jack felt the people around him were monsters, out to get him.

There is so much surprise and wonderment as to what the turning of the page will bring. The monsters seem to exist only in fiction, but do they?

There is a truce between monsters and man that children are off-limits until their 14th birthday. Jack finds his heritage and great friends who watch his back.

Jack is the center character, orphaned and loveable, but out there are angry monsters just waiting to kill 14 year od Jack. His city is about to come under attack

He finds his legacy from a mysterious girl named Eva. His legacy is that he is now a Monster Hunter. He comes from a long line of Monster Hunters. He is now in the family business. His demise will come if he doesn't save himself, his friends and the world. Is Jack "The One"? Is he the last "Templar"?

The book is awesome. It's written not just for middle aged children but for fantasy seekers (us adults). It leaves you wondering what the next page holds. As you read page by page, you want to be there fighting alongside Jack. Fighting not only for his life but the world, what's right and wrong.

Keep on with The Templar Chronicles. They have a lot to give to the children. Books like these keep children motivated "to read".

I received a complimentary copy of the ebook from Jeff Gunhus for this review.

Warning: Only proceed if you are absolutely sure you want to find out about Monster Hunters. Reading this book will almost certainly cause a load of monsters to descend on your house. There's no backing out if you suddenly get scared of zombies or vampires! Don't say I didn't warn you!

Jack Smith is just a regular kid getting ready to celebrate his fourteenth birthday with his Aunt Sophie and two best friends, T-Rex and Will. The day before his birthday things start to get strange. Strange people are showing up in his town wanting to hurt him and then he meets the beautiful Eva who wants to take him away and train him to fight. Jack has lived with his Aunt Sophie since he was a toddler and lost both of his parents. Who is this Jack Templar everyone keeps telling him about? It can't be him because if it is, his whole life has been a lie. With his new found strength, Jack has to protect his friends and Eva from the Lord of the Creach. It turns out that werewolves, zombies, trolls, and vampires are real and Jack maybe one of the only ones to defeat them.

Wow! This is a wonderful book for kids of all ages. If you like a fast paced book with little down time then you have to read this one! There is so much going on within the pages of this book. The characters are fun and feisty. With plenty of action and twist, this is a quick read that will leave you wanting more. I am very excited about this new series and can't wait to read the next book.

I enjoyed this book and got pulled into the story right from the start. Though sometimes, the action was a bit rushed, and the monster battles too prolific, in my estimation. Jack's clever solutions, nimble actions, and dedicated loyalty to his friends made me like him despite his tendency to smart off at inopportune moments. But, as this book is geared mainly toward young male readers, my grievances about that matter very little. On the whole, Jack is the type of leader most of us would be proud to follow.

Here is what I see as drawbacks in this book. First off, It really aggravates me when a writer teases that something major is going to happen but then it doesn't. I had to flip back to be sure that I had read what I thought I had, and yep there it was plain as day. Also, T-Rex's nasty habit is overplayed. I could have easily done without all the detail, but again, underage boys probably find that bit hilarious.

Here is what I particularly liked. I certainly enjoyed the whole adventure, and I am definitely ready for more. Monsters come in many guises; Jeff Gunhaus keeps the tension and the uncertainty ratcheted up to nail-biting proportions with a spin that keeps this story barreling along with plenty of surprises along the way. The conversational tone throughout appealed to me because it seemed real, not faked, and there were many humorous moments, too. That is always a plus in my book. The next book in the series is already queued up in my TBR list. It looks like Jack and his companions will have their work cut out for them as Jack learns even more about the shadowy world around him and really begins to come into his own. I'm looking forward to finding out what develops next.

This book was given to me in exchange for my honest review.

Jack is a pretty normal almost-fourteen year old. He lives with his Aunt Sophie, spends his day in boredom at school, and hangs out with his friends, Will and T-Rex. But as his fourteenth birthday draws nearer, Jack starts noticing some changes.

He's gotten stronger. A LOT stronger. And faster, too. He chalks it to finally hitting a growth spurt and the extra hours he's been putting in to working out.

Then there's the way his principal stares at him. She was always a little creepy before, but now? Jack starts noticing some new faces in his small town as well.

Jack finally discovers that these changes are all related. He's a monster hunter, descended from monster hunters, and on his fourteenth birthday the monsters around him are finally allowed to take him out. He'll have to figure out how to fight for his life while trying to fight for what's right.

What I liked about this book:
This was a well paced, action packed book with a great MG voice. It was reminiscent of the 'Percy Jackson' books -- a great balance of humor, adventure, and just a hint of horror.

Jack's character is beautifully drawn, and the down-to-earth narrative style of the book sucked me right in. I felt like I could hear jack conversing with me (and telling me to put the book down to keep the monsters at bay!)

I *LOVED* Aunt Sophie's character, and I enjoyed that Gunhus left the monsters ambiguously evil. Some of the monsters are clearly over-the-top psychopaths, but others aren't all bad. It led to more moral dilemmas for Jack, and I'm interested to see where this goes in the next book.

What I didn't like about this book:
The body humor. I guess this is because I'm not a thirteen/fourteen year old boy, but nose picking isn't funny to me. Thankfully, there wasn't too much of this.

I also wanted a little more explanation about how Jack was able to so quickly identify and defeat the monsters he fought. He's thrown into a strange world, and while he's gotten stronger, he still hasn't learned about all the different creatures and how to fight them.

*SPOILER*
I was also a little disappointed at the very end when the group leaves town to go to the Monster Hunter Academy. I had a hard time believing T-Rex wouldn't say goodbye to his grandma. I think a short, emotional farewell would have worked better.

Final verdict:
4 1/4 stars (yes, I'm doing quarter stars now. Next week I might do elevenths). If you have a reluctant MG reader on your hands, I would highly recommend this book. It's quick, fun, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to read the next Jack Templar installment!

Jack never expected his 14th birthday would bring monsters as birthday presents. The eve before his birthday, he discovers that his parents were monster hunters that died when he was a baby. As per the agreement that no one under 14 could be harmed by a monster unless they attacked first, Jack was raised by Aunt Sophie, who turned out to be one of the monsters. Making the mistake of defending his new friend, Eva, from getting killed by a monster, Jack finds himself without protection and having to fight Ren Lucre, the vampire who killed his father. When Eva, Jack's other friends, Will and T-Rex, and a girl named Cynthia are kidnapped by the vampire, Jack must figure out a way to defeat the thousand year old being with about a ten-second crash course in monster fighting. Will he succeed?

A humorous, action-packed novel for fantasy fans. The characters are likable and complex. The plot is well-developed and fast-paced. The cliffhangers at the end of the chapter put the icing on the cake and easily hold reader's interest. Readers who like fantasy, adventure, and books with monster will enjoy reading this book

In his first children's book, originally written in a successful attempt to get his reluctant reader eleven-year-old son excited about reading (It's pretty much a boy's book, but you probably guessed as much from the title.), author Jeff Gunhus takes us down a well worn path: prophesied hero, raised in obscurity and without knowledge of who he really is, must grow up in a hurry in order to face his destiny, in this particular case being a monster hunter facing off against hordes of monsters free to attack him the moment he turns 14. The result is more than a bit uneven. Some parts drag, some parts soar; I found the monster avoiding warnings for readers downright tedious and found it a struggle just to get through the first half of the book.

However, things really picked up in the second half.

To Mr. Gunhus' credit, this monster versus monster hunter stuff turned out to be a lot more complicated and nuanced than it first appeared, there being a lot more gray than the all black and white set up initially suggested. It is also a little unclear what age level this is aimed at. The writing level seems more aimed at middle graders while the violence level pushes it more towards YA.

All in all an interesting beginning to a potentially interesting series that continues in Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy, but whether I will continue has yet to be determined.

Note: I received this ebook from NetGalley in return for agreeing to review it.

At the eve of Jack's 14th birthday, strange things start to happen. His Aunty Sophie is getting all misty-eyed, his Principal just changed into a creature (that must be hallucination on his part), he meets a strange man on the way to school and if that's not enough, he seems to be going through some physical changes, cool changes! He seems to be able to run faster, dunk a basketball...Jack thinks he is turning into a superhero!

Things couldn't be further from the truth. Jack, unknown to him, comes from a long descendant of Monster Hunters. At the age of 14 the changes take effect and he officially becomes a Monster Hunter. This doesn't get explained to Jack until he meets a seemingly elderly woman mere minutes before his very first monster attack!

Jack Templar Monster Hunter is a middle-grade fiction filled with action and adventure. I'm a judge a book by it's cover kinda gal (I know, terrible reader!) and didn't think that I'd like it but I thoroughly enjoyed it! Being an MG book it was a short read but I enjoyed every single page. I love the Warning at the start of the book, it sounded so real! Had I been a child I certainly would have started checking my doors to ensure it was locked, that's how real it seemed! Even at this age I was contemplating the realness of it LOL.

The main characters, Jack, Eve, T-Rex and Will were so fun to read about. Their strange group just had a great interaction between them. The secondary characters were just as good, I really liked Ms Hester and Aunty Sophie.

From the very first page I was hooked, what really hooked me in was the Warning letter (can be read here), I loved it! That introduction was different and it also showed me the potential of Jeff Gunhus' writing and I was impressed. Each page gripped me til the end. Definitely a must read, not just for children but adults alike will love it.

This is the perfect middle grade series for boys. It has the fun, adventure and excitement that will keep them reading when many books would make them lose interest. This well written adventure features a protagonist that feels very genuine. I have a little brother and this reminded me of when he was the age Jack is and I think at that age, he really would have identified with Jack.

The story line is well thoughts out and I love the beginning. It really brought me in and was very cleverly done. You start out already enticed and ready to read on. Even being a 23 year old girl I was able to enjoy the novel and understand Jack’s emotions. Normally this wouldn’t be my genre of choice but with books like this, it can be anyone’s genre of choice.

If you have a boy you are looking to buy for, grab the Jack Templar series. Heck, if you have anyone who might love a good adventure filled with knights, personal growth and monsters all I can say is; GO FOR IT! This series is well worth the read!

My son loved the Harry Potter Books and Movies, The Goosebumps, and the Percy Jackson series, so I anticipated that he'd enjoy this series as well. He's 9, so I thought he *might* be frightened at the thought of all the monsters coming to try and kill the main character, Jack, but he was fine. He explained to me that Jack has special powers, like a superhero, and that he already figured out that there was a second book in the series since the title of this one says Book One, so he knew Jack would be fine. (He's intuitive for 9!). He really enjoyed the battles, and how Jack protects those who need it, and said he can relate because he defends his own friends at school, and his brothers when they need it. Unbeknownst to me, he wrote a book report on this and turned it in to his teacher for extra credit. I didn't see it, so I have no idea what he wrote, but it warms my heart to know that he loves reading as much as I do, and that he'd take the initiative to write a report on a book he read for fun! I bought book two for him, and he's reading it now, we're watching and anticipating book three.

I received a PDF copy of this book to facilitate writing this review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Monster Hunter
Author: Jeff Gunhus

MONSTERS ARE EVERYWHERE!
That's what young Jack Smith learns the day before his fourteenth birthday. The other thing he learns, and pray you never learn it: He is a monster hunter and the monsters are hunting him.
Jack Smith spent the first thirteen years of his life like any normal boy. The day before his fourteenth birthday that all changed. It started with physical changes making Jack faster and stronger. But the changes didn't stop there. His life is turned ups ide down as people he knows turn out to be evil monsters just waiting for him to turn fourteen, so they can kill him. The biggest surprise of all though; He is not just plain old Jack Smith, an orphan living with an aged aunt. Instead he is Jack Templar, Monster Hunter, from a long, distinguished line of monster hunters and his aunt, well she's a monster.
Mr. Gunhas takes his young readers on a wild roller coaster ride as Jack and his mismatched group of friends travel from one hair- raising battle to the next while Jack grapples with all the new information. The reader barely has time to breathe as Jack journeys through his final day as Jack Smith and accidently, as teen boys are wont to do, upsets the status quo, giving monsters the freedom to kill him a day early.
GunhUs has expertly crafted a story that keeps the reader turning the pages and wanting more. His characters are intriguing and filled with teenage angst, from the chubby boy to the jock, the pretty girl to the plain girl and of course the ever present evil principal. Jack will traverse the minefield that his life is becoming as he learns who to trust and how to get rid of those he can't while running for his life.
This reader gives Monster Hunter an enthusiastic five stars and cannot wait to read the next installment in Jack Templar's adventures.

Monster Hunter is an awesome book. It is very important to read the warning in the beginning. Do NOT skip it. I thought it was a bunch of rubbish until I started reading the book. Oh man do I wish I would have taken head the warning.

Jack Templar seems like any normal thirteen year old boy until the day before his fourteenth birthday. That is when everything began to change. First it was physical changes. He was stronger and faster. Then he began to see very strange things. Things I can not write about lest you fall into the twisted world we are now trapped in. Unfortunately his friends Will and T-Rex get trapped in the monster fight with him. Luckily he has Eva to guide him.

Are you intrigued? Do you feel like you just have to read this novel? Be careful. I'm not kidding. Read the warnings then take a day to think it over. Don't be hasty as I was. Good luck brave soul. I hope you make it. I have to go now, I can hear another one coming for me.

First couple of paragraphs into this book I thought it was going to be just like another popular series about a young guy who hunts monsters when previously he had no clue he was special. Then very quickly I discovered that they really were not the same. Our hero, Jack, is an orphan who is being raised by his aunt. Then suddenly the day before his fourteenth birthday, Jack's life changes or explodes is a better term. He wakes up stronger, more agile, quicker and faster than the day before. He gets into a fight with the school bullu and breaks the bully's nose. When he gets suspended for the fight, he finds out the principal is a monster. On his way home that afternoon, he meets an old woman begging for change. Except it is really a girl in disguise. Another monster hunter--something Jack is himself and when he turns 14 all the monsters will be after him.

What happens next is definitely a wild night of adventure and some terror. Jack learns so many little details about himself and ends up with so many more questions. He experiences heartbreak and terror but in an honest and real way makes you like Jack even more. He makes you realize that he is a hero because he is loyal and even when he is so afraid to fight he chooses to in order to protect his friends.

This story is basically for middle school age readers but I think it is enjoyable for any age. It is the first book in a series which there are four books so far. There are many questions that go unanswered so I would definitely read the next book in the series. I would love to mention some of the questions I want the answers to the most but I do not like to spoil it for others. I recommend you give this book/series a read. If you like adventure, fantasy, true friendship and the suspense of what comes next, you will really like this story.

Jack Templar Monster Hunter: The Templar Chronicles: Book One is the first enchanting book in what I hope will become a book series from this author. This book will delight many fans who are readers of Percy Jackson/Phillip Pullman/J.K Rowling novels. It centers around 14 year old protagonist, the orphaned and loveable Jack, who finds out the day before his 14th birthday that his city is about to be attacked by droves of angry monsters looking to kill him, as at 14 years old, all bets are off, and his previous protection from harm will be lifted. Oh, and that he comes from a legacy of monster hunters and the King of monsters is particularly hoping for his painful demise. Saving his friends, himself, and world rests entirely on him. What follows is Jack having to fight various forms of evil creatures at every turn, encountering great challenges all while the people around him whisper that he might be "The One." I'll leave it up to you, future readers to find out what that means! This book has magic, the battle of light and darkness, friendship, humor, and other relevant topics to young adults. The characters were well-developed and you truly felt for them. Jack will delight readers as well, as he is a little ball of fire in 14 year old form, standing up for his friends and besting his enemies at every turn. A fantastic read. Much recommended.

Jack Templar thinks his name is Jack Smith. He thinks he is a normal teenager about to celebrate his fourteenth birthday. But, he is wrong about everything. He really doesn't know as much about himself as he thought. His birthday brings him face to face with who he truly is and what he must do with the rest of his life, that he is a monster hunter, and is actually from a long line of monster hunters. He doesn't have a whole lot of time to prepare for this new identity that has been thrust upon him as he finds himself up against every monster that he could imagine.
Jack Templar Monster Hunter: The Templar Chronicles: Book One is a book that is sure to interest the middle school aged child and adults as well. It is a book that will interest both the reluctant reader and the avid one with the fast moving plot and of course it's fair share of monsters!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review, but my opinions are my own.

As Jack Smith approaches his fourteenth birthday, he notices some surprising changes - he is suddenly a lot stronger for one; monsters seem to be everywhere for another. Even his Aunt Sopie and his principal aren't quite what them seemed. Then Jack is approached by a girl he's never met and learns he's a monster hunter descended from a very long and prestigious line of hunters. Surely, things can't get any weirder except...they do.

This is a fun book for middle graders - the monsters are plenty scary, Jack's friends (now sidekicks) add a nice touch of humour and Jack makes for an interesting hero. I especially liked that Jack doesn't become heroic over night but must work through his fears as the story progresses. My opinion - this is the kind of story with enough action to keep even the most reluctant young reader turning pages. However, it may be a little too scary for the very young reader - although there is no gore, there are some rather disturbing scenes.

WOW, this is an amazing book for middle school aged children but as an adult I have to say I really enjoyed this book. From the moment I started reading it I couldnt put it down. It has alot of twists and turns of suspense, once you read the first chapter you want to know what happens next so you keep reading it then it just ends up sucking you in and so you will have it read in one sitting. I dont want to give anything away but I have to say I like how Jack (Who is an orphane) stood up to a bully and seen how the principal of his school freaked him out by changing into some kind of monster. Lol....This book is well written and if you want to know more your just gonna have to read it for yourself because IT IS A GOOD BOOK!!! I could feel my heart pumping fast as I wanted to hurry up and get to the next chapter to find out more and more, thats how good this book is.This Author has a very good imagination....If you like twists, turns, suspense and roller coaster rides this book is for you.......I recommend this book to all ages!! Cant wait for the other book to come out!! Love it.

Jack Templar Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus is an exciting read for teens or grown-ups. It's a joy ride full of spine-chilling characters thrashing through the twists and turns in the plot with just one goal in mind, killing orphan Jack Templar and anyone who tries to help him. Just when you think all the characters are in place, a new breed of monster pops up and just when you think that Jack Templar is safe, he's battling for his life again. With all the odds against Jack, you start pulling for him early on and each victory lets you breathe easy for a minute or two, but don't get too comfortable because the action is non-stop. Gunhus is a talented, imaginative writer and with the action flowing, I had to finish Monster Hunter in one reading. The warnings about monsters drew me into the story so completely that I was actually looking over my shoulder for monsters...after I put the book down! Definitely a book I would recommend and I'm looking forward to the next adventure.

This book really different from another preteen kids book out there thats for sure. It kept me on my toes. I couldn't put this book down I told my 11 yr old about it . This is totally different then Harry Potter and Percy Jackson's. This book is about preteen boy that getting ready to turn 14 . He has lost his Parents so his aunt is raising him. Then One day at school he stands up for good friend at lunch being a kid is mean to him . From that day on things change for him. Really gets you going and keeps your mind wondering and poundering through all 88pgs. I was totally shocked to see how things transfor. This book really good! Being when my son read part of it he loved it really got him going. Being he had hard time find books he likes this one different! Sure shows you how new books out there are really nice and intrigue the mind and get you hooked on them that you can't put them down at all. that Is how i was today started it in the morning and couldn't put it down till I was done.

I highly recommend this book!

This book is written with a middle school audience in mind, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The story plot revolves around a 14 year old named Jack Smith who is a regular sort of kid on the mild side...nothing special until the day before he turns 14. He begins to become super strong and superfast. He is destined to become a monster hunter. This first book which begins the series explains the background and beginnings of becoming a monster hunter. He has two best friends who become involved looking for monsters ,demons, zombies, and vampires. The book is told in the first person with Jack warning you not to read it unless you are prepared to battle monsters, also. Jack has many adventures and , of course, defeats the nasty Ren Lucre. I enjoyed visiting the website with the secret password. Middle schoolers will be intrigued by the site and the characters. This is a good read with many amusing parts.
I received a free copy of the ebook, but these are my opinions not those of the author.

I really enjoyed reading Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus! It was so fun and imaginative! The book reminded me a lot of a cross between Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. The entire time I was reading I kept thinking to myself that I knew my son and daughter would like it. My kids vary in ages so that’s quite a compliment! I also liked that it wasn’t a very long book, which is good for me right now because my self-developed ADD has kicked in full-gear and it’s hard to keep my attention. This book did a fantastic job of keeping my nose in the book wondering what was going to happen next. Great read for YA as well as adults who like a quick, fun read.
4 ½ stars. Clean. YA.

Written for middle school aged students, this book is action-packed from the beginning and will hold the attention of young readers. Not only that, as an adult reader, it was hard to put down, so parents will enjoy it as an easy read. Following Jack Templar, the orphaned teenaged main character, the plot takes on twists and turns. At a tender age, Jack learns his fate the day before his fourteenth birthday - that his ancestors were monster hunters and he has until he is fourteen to be safe from attack. Jack takes on monsters and zombies and although he finds out the people he once knew are part of the pack, he discovers friendships that help him along the way.
Well-written and complete with adventure, the plot moves quickly and seamlessly. This is an excellent read to delve into a world of the unknown.

The devil-werewolf took another step toward us...

Swallowing my fear, I stepped back into position, shoulder-to-shoulder with Eva.

"Any advice?" I whispered to her.

"Yes," she replied. "Don't die."

Sage advice. Especially if you've suddenly discovered you were born a monster hunter.

Most fourteen-year olds receive video games for their birthdays. Maybe a cool, new bike. Occasionally, that favorite aunt will slip a twenty dollar bill into a quirky novelty card. Jack Smith is not so lucky. What he receives turns his teenaged world on its ear - the knowledge that he is not Jack Smith, orphan. No, he is Jack Templar, monster hunter, and every monster hiding in the shadows is just DYING to meet him.

Already familiar with Jeff Gunhus' work in his adult supernatural thriller novel Night Chill (Seven Guns Press, 2013), I was already well-acquainted with Jeff's ability to grab a reader's attention and adeptly ratchet the tension to edge-of-your-seat intensity. (Read my review here.) With Jack Templar, his new adventure/fantasy series for middle-grade and young adult readers, he does not short-change the heart-stopping moments. Currently, there are three books that follow the adventures of the young Templar:

Jack Templar: Monster Hunter;

Jack Templar and the Monster Academy; and

Jack Templar and the Lord of the Vampires.

For television viewers, the Templar series is much like Supernatural for the Skechers set. And though I also immediately found myself drawing comparisons to Mortal Instruments, the Percy Jackson series, Jeff's originality of voice quickly allayed any suspicions I may have harbored upon the opening words of Book One. The reader is immediately drawn in as a co-conspirator. Several warnings are offered directly to the reader by young Jack, and if you are brave enough to venture beyond their dire predictions, you're in for a wild ride through dark forests and deepest shadows to face some of the most terrifying ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties that ever roamed your imagination.

One characteristic of the Templar series I found refreshing was the strong female characters woven into the cast. Indeed, two of the first hunters Jack ever meets are females. Further, Master Aquinas, leader of the Monster Academy, is a female. In fact, the series deftly grants strength to characters who some writers traditionally cast as weaker, including Jack's rotund, booger-picking cohort, T-Rex who steps up in Book Two. It's an appeal that should speak to many young readers who, like Jack, start out in life without belief in themselves.

Like Jack, I will issue a warning. Though packed with excitement and action, more sensitive readers should be cautious when picking up this series. The fantasy-violence, though age-appropriate and not unacceptable, may be too intense. Gunhus does balance the intensity with chuckle-inducing humor, however. It's a little difficult to be TOO frightened when Jack describes a talon-bearing, leathery winged harpy as a "demented chicken".

While Book One was so jam-packed with action that the reader hardly finds a chance to breathe, the pace of Book Two slows down slightly - ever so slightly. This is largely due to the deeper exploration of personal relationships and the introduction of backstory. Exercise caution, dear reader, for this does not mean that Gunhus doesn't pack a mean one-two punch with the reminder of the plot. Book Two doesn't disappoint with telepathic werewolves, goblin armies, and fire-breathing dragons.

Book Three finds our hero embarking on a quest for the mysterious Jerusalem Stones, artifacts alluded to in the first two adventures. Ren Lucre, Lord of the Vampires, can only be stopped when the mythical stones are brought together. There's only one tiny problem...each of the stones is guarded by a nasty Creach lord. Hey, what's another monster duel?

The tone of Book Three is darker than the first two books, a trait many readers of middle-grade fantasy will recognize from the Harry Potter series. It does not detract from the enjoyment of the story, but again, wary readers take heed. The pulse-pounding action and anxious anticipation of what-comes-next will keep readers glued to the page!

So, if you're looking for a series filled with danger, fraught with peril, sprinkled through with quirky humor, and brave heroes, pick up the Jack Templar series. Just remember, you've been warned...and like Eva says: "It's all fun and games until someone gets eaten by a muguwump."

Continuing the tradition of Percy Jackson is this entertaining read about Jack Templar. This isn’t a happy, peaceful story, but rather a darker, grittier one which makes for quite engrossing reading. Jack’s life is not easy and his story has elements of Grimm in it in that he is descended from a long line of monster hunters.

I was drawn into the story from the very first page. It’s an entertaining, fast paced read full of adventure and friendship with an excellent message for younger readers.

I certainly recommend this and look forward to the next volume in what I hope is a long series.

Wonderfully exciting and enthralling are words I use to describe this book when I think of 'Jack Templar: Monster Hunter" overall.

There's just something awesomely cool about the thought of being something you didn't know you were. I really loved the way this book started and it had me hooked from the very first. I can just imagine young teens looking over their shoulder, waiting for something to jump out at them. There was something so easy about getting sucked into the world Jeff Gunhus created and that kept you there as you followed the main character, Jack, along with his friends, on his epic journey to self-discovery.

Everything in this book was something a reader could love - action, adventure, mythical creatures, mystery and even a touch of romance. Not bad for fourteen-year-old Jack Templar. There were so many messages to take from this book - messages of love, self-sacrifice, faith and and having the belief that you can be so much more than you are if you just believed. The words poured from the page and I just couldn't help lapping them up.

'Jack Templar: Monster Hunter' was just so easy to read and so much fun! There was never a moment that I considered this book dull at all, and maybe, just maybe, that's because at heart I'm a fourteen-year-old boy looking for adventure and a chance to believe in the impossible. Haha, a tomboy at least. The writing itself was lovely. I loved how I could picture everything that was happening in my head. It gave me a connection to the characters that I can only gain from a gifted story-teller. There was also a way this author introduced me to the novel that utterly unique and amusing.

The characters themselves held individual traits that were cute, but rather gross, all at the same time. They were feisty, scared, loyal, traitorous and a mixed bag of other things as well. Other people may read this book and not feel the same things as I do, and that's fine. All I know is that this book appealed to me in ways that I wouldn't have expected. It wasn't that the plot was as meaningful as some books I've read, but it struck the 'inner child' in me, and that 'inner child' danced a mad little dance of delight.

I've been so fortunate to have read some books lately that have totally fascinated me and because of that I don't see anything I would like to point out as to be wary of at all. The 'heart of the reader' came out of me in this book, and not the 'heart of a writer'. For those who do both, you'll know what I mean.

I would recommend this book to anyone who's young at heart.

From the first sentence of the warning on the back cover, my 11 year old was hooked! He read this in two days, and can't wait to read the second book in the series. He loved the action, the mix of monsters (harpies, zombies, etc) and that the book is fast-paced and takes place over the course of one day! He is a big fan of Percy Jackson , the Gone series, the Maximum Ride series, etc. and this book didn't disappoint! Jack Templar Monster Hunter is the perfect book for kids who love adventure, but I think it would be a great series for kids who may not enjoy reading so much. This book (and subsequent series) will pull them in for sure!

I absolutely love this book, I was deciding whether to give it a 5 star or 4 because the "warning" part at the beginning of the book and in a few places along the way. They got kind of draggy and some parts unnecessary, I was a little bit turned off by it at one point and almost wanted to put down the book, I'm glad I hang on, that's why it earned a 5 star.

This book is packed with action and every minute you will be transported from one excitement to another heart racing danger, danger lurking around where Jack Templar & his friends have to fight off monsters, werewolf, trolls, zombies and harpies constantly. I don't remember reading books that has all of them in a book, quite an interesting mix of baddie guys. Even though its action at every turn the flow of the story is well paced where I was able to stop and catch my breath before I get caught up with another wave of excitement.

I wasn't too comfortable with the detailed description on the way the main characters slayed the monsters I especially dislike the part where the monsters and creatures attacked Auntie Sophie but than again if it gets into me means the author did a good job with the description, although I think its too much information for 8YOs to handle.

I am sure my 8YO boy, who is also an advance reader, will enjoy this book a lot but I would think this book will be more suitable for 13 YO & above, plus of course adults like me who love fantasy stories.

This book starts off following Jack Templar on the eve of his fourteenth birthday. He's in for the quite the birthday... he doesn't get your typical gift, but instead discoverers that he is the last in a long line of monster hunters... and all the monsters are on their way to find him. This unfurls into the most amazing of adventures, self-discovery, and life changing events.

I love middle grade books that don't dumb things down, but take an honest approach at real situations and show how that affects our youth. Even in the midst of the fantasy in this story, this book cuts to the reality of situations... From how differences and fear trumps appreciation, to the nuances in friendship, to the length that family will go to protect you.

This is perfect for the middle grader who isn't afraid of monsters or darker themes. There is more than a bit of violence, but also a heavy dose of humor, and heroism to balance that out. My only criticism in this book comes from when the narrator chooses to break the fourth wall... I've never actually seen it done in books before, which made this device particularly fun, but I felt it was used more successfully in certain locations more than others.

Monster Hunter is a fun read that keeps your interest. It is geared for the teenage reader but is surprisingly well received by the adult reader. I have always enjoyed action adventures involving younger heros that give teens good role models. This book proves that a story can be very captivating to the reader without all the vulgarity and sexual content that seems prevalent in today's stories and movies. Kids need to understand that good morals and integrity as well as courage as you face your fears is paramount to becoming a adult of great value to our society. Please give this book a read and see if it doesn't have something special to offer. Looking forward to the next installment.

Jack Templar Monster Hunter is about an orphaned boy who lives a perfectly normal life until his 14th birthday, when he finds out that he comes from a long line of monster hunters and his life takes a turn for the adventurous.

I expected this book to be another one of those predictable ones about a heroic boy that has to kill dragons or zombies. Not so. I finished it in a day because it was hard to put down. Although the warnings did get a little old, the book is from the point of view of a 14-year-old, so I guess they make sense. The beginning of the book and some of Jack's dilemmas are easy for kids to relate to and entertaining to read about.

The beginning seems a little strange, with Jack turning into a muscular superman, but it makes more sense once you get into the book. There is a twist at the end with Cindy, and I was not expecting it. Some parts reminded me of Harry Potter, in a good way. The book didn't ever seem to be repeating itself or get boring; I would even have been okay with it being a little longer.

I recommend this to middle schoolers, anyone who likes a fast-paced adventure story, or anybody who needs tips on how to fight off monsters :) Both boys and girls would enjoy this tale. The rest of the series is not out yet but I'm sure it will be soon.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book for review purposes only. I was not compensated to write a positive or favorable review. This is Keeping Up With The Rheinlander's personal opinion.

This book initially reminded me of the adventures that Harry, Ron and Hermione would have, but as with Harry Potter, it's not just for kids. I'm a reader who loves adventure novels, so this book was amazing to me. This book is about an orphan child, named Jack Smith, who as a child would have loved to be a monster hunter. Once he actually becomes one though, it's a bit of a different story. Nothing is exactly as it seems in his life. The ones who seem normal, are actually monsters from another world. I don't want to give away too much, but you'll love it. I know I did.

This is a book written for middle-aged children, though as an adult I found it quite interesting too. The book grabs you from the moment it starts with Jack Smith, an orphan boy who grows up not knowing what his true destiny is. He lives in a small town with his aunt Sophie as his parents supposedly passed when he was little so he knew nothing of his parents or his true heritage. Coming into puberty at the age of 14 everything changes in his world. Nothing is truly as it seems, the people you think you know turn out to be monsters from another world, and then you discover that you are the one they've been waiting to become of age so that they could take your life. But a remarkable thing happens when Jack discovers his heritage, and has some great friends who help him and guard his back. This book is so full of adventure and twist and turns that anyone who picks it up is going to be so engrossed and wanting to find out what happens in this young man's life and how it turns out.
