This book is so sweet, and the predicaments that Kitten gets into are silly indeed. This book is a great gift for a toddler, especially when paired with a small stuffed kitten to cuddle while reading at bedtime.

And oldie, but a goodie. Such a sweet story. We bought this book after I had used up all of our renewals at the library. We've now had this book for a month and are still reading every other night. Both my 5 and 2 year old enjoy it.

The absolute favorite book in our house! Kitten is having a wild night and is up for a treat. My kids love reading it and patting kitten at the last page. The illustrations are griping and I love it is in black and white.

What a wonderful little storybook this is, so cute and written in a realistic way that is so unusual for a childrens book. The illustrations are adorable. I am very happy to have it and to be able to read it to my 5 year old daughter.

My eight month old loves this book. The illustrations are large and black and white, making them easy for a little one to appreciate. The story is a good one, about a little kitten trying to get something she can't and getting into trouble. It's a story babies can relate to!

Loved this story and the illustrations therein! Great for bedtime reading with lively action and beautiful drawings. However, what was supposed to be a new book had definitely seen some use prior to arrival. Cover was torn and several pages dirty/scuffed up. The condition of the book doesn't detract from the beautiful storyline--it was just disappointing that it arrived in the condition that it did.

An adorable kitten sees her first full moon. Believing it is a saucer of milk, she sets out to have a taste. Her curiosity leads her on a series of misadventures where she ends up with bugs on her tongue, hurt from a leap off the porch, and soaking wet from a dive into a pond. The 2005 Caldecott Medal winner places Kitten’s actions in a repetitive series: she sees the moon and wants to drink from it; she takes an action and deals with the consequences; and the moon – referred to as the “little bowl of milk” – waits for her next move. Will Kitten learn from her mistakes? Kevin Henkes uses a charcoal and cream-colored palette, with simple, understated illustrations outlined in thick, black line, to tell his tale, and Kitten’s face is very expressive. The brief text on each page is simple, bold, and black; it causes no distraction for young readers and listeners. Preschoolers will see themselves in the tenacious Kitten, who is single-minded in her goal.

This book is both an extremely sweet story and gorgeous. I picked it up off the Caldecot winners shelf at the library, having never heard of it, and we were so charmed that we had to buy our own copy. My 2 year old thinks it's pretty a hilarious book - he likes to "meow" and pretend to pounce like the kitten. The illustrations are beautiful, as expected. The fact that it's in black and white just makes it even more striking.
We initially intended to wait until it was available in paperback to buy it, but we ultimately decided that we wanted the hard cover so that it could be an "heirloom" book. We look forward to keeping it to pass along decades from now - it will definitely stand the test of time as a new classic.

My cousin has an male orange cat named Kitty. He's pretty much an outdoor cat since he spends most of his daytime in the outdoor chasing squirrels and chipmunks, finding things to scratch, and fighting other cats. I love their cat so much since he always leans near my legs when I'm sitting and he loves it when I pet him or scratch his head. I think cats are very quick and shrewd and can pretty much keep their predators away with the help of their strong claws. Cats are also a bit curious about what they see, and one kitten will find that out when she's trying to get milk in this adorable black-and-white book.
In great black-and-white illustrations, we meets a cute white kitten who's outside on a porch and sees her first full moon. But misguided, she thinks that the moon is a bowl of milk in the sky and will do whatever it takes to get it. First, she decides to reach the moon with her neck and sticking out her tongue, but ends up licking a firefly. She then tries to jump to it but ends stumbling off the porch. She decides to follow the moon through a sidewalk, garden, field and reaches to a pond. She goes up a tree to finally catch her milk in the pond and when she does, she ends up in a soggy mess.
Cat lovers will find a true adventure in this wonderful book that's full of wonder. The illustrations are dazzling with the black-and-white touch and the story is simple the way it is. Kids will also love the book, thanks to the cute protagonist and her curious mind. We're pretty much use to Kevin Henkes stories with mice as the characters, but this book is a great exception and perfect for beginning readers. But dog lovers, beware of this book.

This book truly has it all! The story takes place at night and goes through a shimmering array of charcoal looking style illustrations that seem to perfectly showcase kitten during his journey of discovery without detracting from the simplicity and sheer determination of a naive baby kitten. You can't help but laugh even as an adult at the adventures this poor, tiny kitten has in his quest for the irresistible bowl of milk (I mean of course kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk its her first moon and shes clearly not properly informed about the moon and how it glistens in the sky and obviously beckons to her "come drink me"). She runs, she climbs, she leaps, and even ends up soaking wet in what she thinks is another bowl of milk only to find that in the end everything she wants is waiting for her right on her very own doorstep. I love reading this to my daughter I never get sick of it, this book will absolutely stand the test of time! In fact I was so smitten with this book I've gone on to buy at least five other Kevin Henkes books for my daughter who ironically has a floral name as does most of Henke's mouse characters and their all as equally fantastic as kitten, but in my opinion for a reader with a bigger attention span 2 and a half+. I actually think "Kittens first full moon" would be absolutely amazing as a board book and so I recommend it from birth+.

A lovely picture book which would delight any small child. A white kitten is the only character, and its dilemma is simple: it wants the giant bowl of milk up in the night sky. Who can blame Kitten for wanting that? First, it tries licking the moon, then jumping on it, then climbing to it. Nothing works. But then, from its perch in a tree, Kitten notices another giant bowl of milk (actually a pond). Kitten leaps, splashes, and emerges hilariously bedraggled. Back at home, Kitten finds a real bowl of milk, and the story ends happily with it curled up asleep, a look of dreamy contentment on its little face.
The illustrations are attractive -- black and white with shades of gray, and thick outlines. The author/artist has captured the peculiar way that cats hunch forward, whiskers at attention and tail twitching. But the best picture is the one of the soaked kitten after the ill-advised pond jump. Few sights are more pathetic than a wet kitten, and no child's heart could remain unmoved at the sight of this one.

Kitten's First Full Moon is a unique, delightful story. I received this book from a 4th grade teacher who was clearing out her classroom. Knowing I had a two year old she thought I might want to hold on to it. Captivated by the black and white illustrations I read it to my daughter the first night. She loved it! It's a simple story about a kitten who mistakes the full moon for a bowl of milk. For a ten second toddler's attention span this book held her interested. I think the black and white drawings stand out from the traditional bright colored books children typically see. Exposing her to different styles I think is important. It is a cute book that should be added to your children's library.

This is a great easy reader for children as young as three to six years old. While reading this book I thought of these questions that parents could ask the child will reading this book. Some of the questions are that families can talk about the moon and imagination also what does the moon look like to you in its different phases? Lastly have you ever seen the man in the moon? After reading this book it really got me thinking about the moon and how awesome it looks at night. Kitten's First Full Moon is very cute because the story ties together a scientific story about the moon and how the kittens first reactions are to it.
Here is a quick summary of this cute book and why it draws you into reading it til the end. Sitting on the stairs, little Kitten sees what she takes to be a small bowl of milk in the night sky, but try as she might, she cannot get to it. She reaches and chases the bowl, but it always eludes her. Climbing up a tree, she sees below what she thinks is an even bigger bowl of milk. Of course, it is the moon and she gets soaking wet when she jumps into its reflection on the water. A real bowl of milk left for her on the porch gives the story a happy ending. This book is awesome and a most read to little ones. :)

This darling little book was an instant favorite. It's completely gray-scale but you don't miss the color for an instant. Kitten is convinced the full moon is a bowl of milk she can get and tries many innovative ways to get it--her attempts invoke both laughter and sympathy from youngsters. After each attempt she recomposes herself and looks up: "Still there was the little bowl of milk" -- nicely done repetition that a child can easily memorize and repeat with you. Kitten doesn't get the milk in the sky, but the ending is happy. Highly recommend, this is a favorite we've pulled out again and again for over a year.

This cute story of a kitten thinking the full moon is a big bowl of milk and her wriggling, tumbling, chasing, climbing, and leaping after it reminds me of childhood imagination, curiousity, exploration and discovery. Kitten's First Full Moon has a fun underlying message of encouragement to go after our dreams! Usually children love colorfully illustrated books. Kitten's First Full Moon, done in black and white with variations of gray shades, grants it to stand out in memory as being different and enables it to receive greater attention, as it is a story that occurs at night. (So black and white makes sense.) The bold, thick black lettering on starch white paper makes it easy for a child to read with confidence. The sentences are of varying length and the story is written so that it keeps children turning pages to find out what the kitten will do next. The many changes of illustrations from one on a full page, to five long ones, to a two page spread with only one small picture on each and more, adds to the visual interest of KFFM. The Caldecott Medal Winner of 2005. Enjoy it!
