Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set

I was genuinely pleased with the quality of this set when it arrived. I've been trying to get back into TRPGs for years, and I think 5e will be the version that makes that possible. For the price, you get a sturdy box with fantastic art and room to store additional supplements (or a printed copy of the free pdf from the WOTC website), some very nice dice, a basic ruleset to introduce you to roleplaying, a lengthy and well organized adventure, and some pre-generated characters.

There is a lot of value in this set, in my opinion. If you want to get into gaming quickly and inexpensively, this set will help you enter a world that thankfully continues to thrive in the digital age. It is not a stand alone set in terms of providing everything one will need to keep playing the game with greater depth over time, but it suceeds in its mission of getting people into gaming and having fun as soon as possible.

This was a great introduction to this new version of D&D. The rules guide is straight forward for simple character creation, and for running the LMoP adventure. You can play through the entire adventure, and have no need for the Player's Handbook or the Dungeon Master's guide.

The Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure is great as well. You are able to experience many facets of the game's mechanics. You get to learn about overland travel + encounter rolls, dungeon fighting and outdoor fighting, ambush rounds, Role Playing in character or third party, and how your choices can affect the story/world.

This is a very easy way to get into D&D. I have purchased two of the starter kits since the rule book had water spill on it and essentially glue all the pages together. It is nice enough and cheap enough to have both sets. Plus I have two sets of the dice that came with it now!

I give this 5 stars because everything it says is exactly what it is. However, you will still need the players manual if you don't know what you're doing. This gives you a first step into Dungeons & Dragons, but it does not give you the details to create your own character and join in an adventure.

Great value for the price. Comes with 5 pre-generated characters for new players to choose from. Covers the three main pillars for D&D (Combat, Exploration, and Conversation) very well for new DMs. The adventure is from levels 1-5 and can be run at a pretty decent clip to finish pretty quickly in order to teach new players/DMs how to play, or much longer if used as a reference source for a homebrew campaign.

Overall a perfect product for either new DMs, or DMs looking to bring new players to the D&D world using 5e.

Not bad. The the store price was very reasonable for a box set. Price aside the contents were also interesting though seemly lacking when compared to the slickness and sheer amount of extras that were included with the Pathfinder Beginner Box a few years ago. Still the rules are the real meat of the product and it delivers. This set is a huge improvement over the 4e "Red Box" that was an insult to the well loved OD&D Red Box of the 80s.

Sorry I'm not great at reviewing but that's my opinion. I like this product and the price. I'm satisfied that I got my money's worth.

A great way to get started. The module included is worth the price of the set. Highly recommended for anyone new to Ed5 or new to role playing in general. I bought the set to get my kids started and they got excited enough, that I'm going to purchase the new books...

Probably the best deal in gaming out there. But be careful, you will be hooked! I bought this as a complete beginner, and I was able to get a game going in no time. There is a play-through of the first part of this scenario on Youtube that is worth watching if you are a complete beginner like me. At this price, it's worth it just for the scenario. Dice are included too!

I've always been curious about the game but thought it may be a little "too nerdy" for me. Turns out it's something I think most people would enjoy if they had the patience to learn it and were open minded enough to try it.

Fantastic for the beginner and the seasoned DM's and players. It was suggested that the DM read through the provided scenario BUT NOT THE PLAYERS, and that as the initial game unfolds, even the most experienced players will learn the differences between e5 and the previous. I STRONGLY suggest that option. Not only is it an awesome way to break in the game, but it puts all players on the exact same playing field.

In my first pass, it seems that the starting scenario is designed in such a way to slow-roll out the changes... and it is perfect.

Product is as described. Great condition. D&D5e looks like the best system they have ever had. Over all this is a great product and a great way to start with D&D. The starter set rule book is incredibly detailed and well put together. The starter adventure "Lost Mine of Phandelver" is well put together and the descriptions and artwork are incredible. Overall if your interested in D&D this is definitely the product to buy.

This set has a lot of information and utility condensed into a small package. My attempt at the enclosed campaign was doomed to failure from the start with my players being as unpredictable as they are, but it was still a good kick-start to my brain to see how things work. The dice look pretty good too and the box happens to be the same size as the actual rulebooks too, so it's become my one-container solution for sessions!

For the price, it's fan-bloody-tastic. The adventure is great for those starting out like we are. I don't know about you, but I found the difficulty to be sufficient. Maybe it's my god-like rolling or the team that I'm running are knuckle heads, but I've managed to knock the snot out of these guys quite a bit.
The rule book doesn't cover everything, nor does the adventure guide. You'll definitely have to wing it at some points, but isn't that what this is all about? Better have your wits about you, DM.

This was a fantastically well written adventure. I really hope Wizards keep this quality. This made for a great spring board for characters to begin their adventure. We were all disappointed when it ended. Now we have taken those characters and our world is growing from that. They call Phandelver their home now. They rolled their own characters and the adventure began. This was a great way for old and new characters to get back into the game. We loved 5ed DnD so much we are actually all getting the new books and looking forward to playing this. The new edition has the great feel of a RPG that we have been missing!

I bought this starter set to get accustomed to the D&D V5. I have not played in a long time so I wanted to get reacquainted with the updated rules and world. I have not yet used the starter adventures, but I will say the character sheets included are super useful and I will probably have a run through of the starter quest just to get myself accustomed to the latest D&D world! Can't wait to start this back up!

As Starter sets go, this is not bad. the adventure is a WOTC production, and well done. The starter characters are interesting. I think the on-line supplements are the key here. You can go get some other pre-made characters for 1st level if you chose from WOTC directly, or other sources.

All in all it seems pretty okay for beginners which is what I am. But I'm a little bit disappointed because I wanted blank character sheets and some kind of guidelines for character creation so I could make my own rather than using a premade character.

Aside from the dice and the adventure, most of the contents of this box can be found online for free on Wizards of the Coast's website. If you need a set of dice or a short adventure to help you learn how to play, this is a good buy. If you are looking more for the introductory rules or the pre-generated characters, I'd stick to the PDFs on the website.

Wow! This starter set is the perfect way for people to get hooked on D&D! The Lost Mine of Phandelver (the story that it comes with) is so well written and it definitely is an experience that even long time players of D&D shouldn't miss out on! This entire set is worth buying just for Phandelver's campaign.

Comes with the basic game rules, an adventure to run several, pre-made characters sheets, and some dice; everything you need to get started playing one of the coolest games ever. The Lost Mine of Phandelver, which is the adventure that comes in this box, is an excellent adventure for both players and dungeon masters to learn the game. The dice are nice too.

Great starter set. For the money the store is asking , it's certainly worth it. Great introductory story. There's things to be learned here, even if you're a seasoned pro. My group was used to playing 3.5 and pathfinder, but we found this was a great way to try to learn the new rules and see what was different. Certainly don't feel like i wasted my money. Great complimentary material to go along with the free downloadable PDF basic rules.

This kit is good for players that have never played D&D of any adition. Lost Mines preset campaign book included is great. Though I must admit i was a little dissapointed there is no full scale maps for character usage. I had staples print out the first map photo. After it got blown up. With a picture i had. Drawing a PC friendly one is advised. As well as purchasing a set of preset miniatures.

For the price this a very good starter for someone that has not played before. Even for the old pro it good also because of the module in it. You normally can buy a module for this price. Just not everything in the box is pretty basic other than the module. If you like it you can go to the D&D web site and check out the free basic rules and if you like that I recommend coming back to the store and picking the other 5thed books up.

This is an amazing arrangement for anyone to learn and enjoy 5th Edition.

The starter set makes it incredibly easy for players to jump right into D&D, while offering DMs, both new and veterans of prior editions, everything they need to learn the basics and really have a good time.

The quest is set up to slowly introduce players and DMs to all the game mechanics over 4 Episodes and honestly just the adventure alone pays for the product.

This starter set was designed and released for brand new D&D or tabletop RPG players. If you are planning on getting the D&D 5th Edition Players Handbook, you DON'T NEED to buy the Starter Set. It does have everything a new player needs to get started. But if you're a veteran or going to buy/have access to the PHB, this set is superfluous.

I was introduced to Dungeons & Dragons at age 15, but I was intimidated by how smart other people were who played it, so I didn't want to even try. I'm 45 now and i think better late than never. I'm still intimidated, but I really want to learn, so wish me luck lol.

The adventure included with this set is great. Great story, very versatile, good details, good coaching for new players. Lots of content!
The rulebook included here was disappointing. It includes nothing at all about character creation. There are no race or class descriptions. There are no customization options like weapons and armor.

Seems like this kit was really simplified in 5th Edition. The exclusion of tokens and gridded maps made my players a bit upset, I'll just have to make my own. Other than that you get enough to start your players off on a good adventure. 5 premade character sheets that let your newer players try out different play styles, a campaign that let's every player shine, and a comprehensive rulebook that you'll always have at your side.
