I have been to several mountain bike training schools and this book still offered information I have not relieved in school. It is a great read, the author is funny and still teaches new techniques and riding principles.

Excellent book that has great pictures to demonstrate the descriptions. Being a beginner I learnt heaps but it caters for all levels. I love the humour throughout also. I have flicked through this several times now going back to refresh my memory on techniques. Its one of those books that provides good, solid timeless tips and techniques. Highly recommended.

This book nearly instantly stepped up my riding making me faster, more controlled and having much more fun.
After reading and putting into action chapter 2 in this book about body position the very next (and all subsequent ) rides yielded more control on the bike, better cornering, faster over gnarly sections and loads more confidence. The rest of the book has further skills to keep developing.
I'm really happy with it.

5 out of 5 for the pictures, diagrams, humor, and explanations. Lopes breaks down the skills and makes them easy to understand and develop. After reading the book once I reread it and focused on the skills in each chapter as I read it. It definitely made riding more fun and I recommend it to other riders constantly.

"Heavy Feet, Light Hands" is drilled into your head throughout the book and for a very good reason. I not only improved my riding position but also technique. I can honestly say I have shaved a considerable amount of time off my favorite rides. I will be rereading this book again in Winter for a refresh.
A must read for entry level to intermediate MTB riders!!

This is an excellent book for those that are becoming more serious about off-road cycling. While the writing is a bit simple, this is part of the genius. It's not a deep and engaging novel. Rather, it's a direct and to the point manual on how to become a better rider. The author gives enough detail to make one understand the necessary movements, adjustments, etc, that are necessary to perform various maneuvers. I suggest that you take it slow and learn the basics. Just these will give you a boost in confidence that will allow you to shed tons of time from your TT loops. "Keep your center of gravity over the bottom bracket!"

The book content is good, and meets expectations - I'd give it a 4 or 5 (haven't finished reading it yet) if I had the hard copy.
However, the Kindle Fire version does not work very well for me. It freezes and the then the book closes. It is useless on the Fire, which I purchased it for.
It works fine on my iPhone 4S using the Kindle App. But the small display isn't ideal.

If you're looking for the definitive text on being a better mountain biker, look no further. Lee McCormack is unique in his technical ability as a rider, an analyst and a communicator. The diagrams and pictures are extraordinarily well thought out and presented. Must have.

I'm only halfway through due to time constraints but I've already learnt heaps of practical techniques applicable to my 'pedestrian' riding, not just from front-line riders.
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take their down and up hills a little more seriously than just turning the wheels.

Like the other reviews I found the hip language annoying. Was hoping for more details and training exercises to learn the skills. I wish Gene Hamilton of BetterRide mountain bike camps would do a book or video.

This is a very comprehensive, very easy to read and to understand book. I am 44 and I used to BMX when I was 16. So far I've applied some ot the techniques depicted in the book they work very well.
I think this book is equally interesting for those who want to improve on an already solid ability, as well as those like me, retaking already forgoten skills or learning new ones.

Lots of great photos showing proper techniques makes this book a must for learning the skills and improving one's speed. The book is put together very well and a breeze to follow. However, for those of us interested in the nitty gritty, it also explains the "physics" of riding.

In a nutshell...the book examines impediments to progress in developing MTB skills and then goes on to describe in excellent detail how to accomplish the full range of useful MTB maneuvers. Even if you consider yourself an expert rider, there is something in this book that will at least improve your riding.
It's a good investment for any MTB rider, just keep it nearby while you relax at home and read a little and then go out and practice.

This book will help any mountain biker out with valuable tips for beginners and beyond.
I'm an intermediate and have been reading a few tips at a time and then practicing them on our trails.
I recommend this book to all mountain bikers.

Just by following simple advise like keeping the 'attack position', I have improved my riding significantly. I became better at cornering, jumping and learned new skills like manuals and bony hoping that allow me to have more fun during my rides. I have read this book two times!

New to mountain biking; actually haven't been on a bike in more than 30 years. Lots of good information to help get past the "newbie" stage as painless as possible. Also reading some of the terminology in context helps understand some of the online forum discussions.

Great read with complementary photos that has definately aided my MTB skills.
That said, my only cxriticism was Lopes' distain for 29ers over 26' wheels; I was disappointed by his lack of objectivity and prejudice, despite his evident credentials.
As a 6'3" 195lb rider, I converted from 26' to 29' and haven't looked back but, its a totally personal thing and definately related to physics (the bike) and physiology (the rider). There's definately no "one size fits all" in MTB and Lopes of all people should know that! Ride On.
