I have a four year old son with speech delay. His speech teacher told us that they were working on labeling and identifying actions at school. Based on reviews, I thought this book would help him practice labeling and identifying actions at home.

As soon as I opened this book, I knew I made the right decision. He was very responsive and enjoying every single page. (Maybe the teacher is already using this book at the school. I should've asked..)

Overall, this is very good for connecting words and actions and also fun exercise for both my son and me and my husband. My husband and I hurt ourselves little bit lol

I highly recommend this book for everyone!

Our 20 month old and 3 year old boys love this Eric Carle gem. It combines beautiful pictures of animals with simple rhythmic text showing body parts and actions -- turning heads, bending necks, raising shoulders, arching backs and others. Best of all, it allows active participation by imitating what is on the page. We have purchased quite a few books but this one is magic.

I didn't realize this was an interactive book when I ordered it - I just saw "Eric Carle" and figured we would try it. I was so impressed, it came at a perfect time because my two year old has been using the phrase "I can't do it" a lot lately so as we do all of the activities in this book (Which its great that they are all simple activities even toddlers can accomplish) he gets excited every time to say "I CAN do it!"

The only problem with this book is that my toddler has so much fun with it that we cant read it at bedtime -- because he wont want to sleep - and will want to read it over and over again. 5 Stars!

I asked my daughter to pick out a book she likes from daycare that we didn't have at home and this is the one she chose.
When it arrived, I noticed it was much smaller than the one at daycare. I guess I should have paid attention to the dimensions when I ordered it. It does have the hard pages, which is nice.

It is one of my child's favorite. We follow all the moves when the book prompt - "Can you do it?" Note: this is not a good bedtime story, as it usually wakes up my child more than putting her to bed, since she gets pretty active from following all the moves.

This is the best Eric Carle book, in my opinion. My grandchildren and nieces love doing the actions as we read the book. The 2.5 year old even has it about memorized after only a few readings. If you are considering this book - buy it!

I purchased this as a gift for my friend's son. He loves it, and the nice thing about is that it is super durable. Board books like this one is the only way to go! And Eric Carle is the BEST children's author!

This is my sons absolute favorite book (has been since about 10 months and he's 13 months now). He loves doing the motions for the different animals. Now when he sees a photo of an elephant he starts stomping his feet, it's too cute!

My five-year old great nephew loves this book. He has some speech problems but is learning to say bits of it well. He loves animals and recognises them whilst it reinforces names of body parts. He absolutely adores doing the actions especially the kucking the lega in the air. I bought it for his birthday and we are reading it regularly by his choice for the last month. I also feel it will last the test of time. Highly rscommended on many fronts for toddlers by a very experienced now retired teacher

We LOVE this book, we play out the little roles of each animal and along with it learn the parts of the body and the movements. We have a lot of fun with this and laugh every time we read it together.

I dont remember how the seller rated the condition of this book, however, I was very disappointed with all the
"purple " marker scribble throughout the book. I ordered another copy from another seller and it is like new. I will use this one just in my reading center with the younger kids where I wont mind if they tear the pages. disappointing, but next time I will make certain to double check the condition the book rating before I order.

I love this book for the 18 mos-3 year olds I work with as an SLP. A lot of my therapy kiddos aren't too interested in books, or will only look at books that have a "function" (e.g. lift-the-flap books, touch/feel books, or books with sounds). I show them the gorilla on the cover, then thump my chest and make a gorilla sound. Usually that will get any kid's attention, even kids with poor eye contact / autism spectrum type behaviors.

For the hard-core book-dislikers, it usually takes a few tries where we might just look at a few pages, but eventually I can even get them interested. Each page of this book has a different animal moving a different body part-- and a picture of a kid doing the same thing. The kids can imitate you doing the movement, or some kids will even look at the picture and copy the animal or kid. (For my purposes, it's even better when the kids listen to and follow verbal directions to do the movement, but most of the kids I see need the visual cues along with instructions.) Some of the pictures are more fun than others. The first few (penguin turning his head, giraffe bending his neck) aren't too exciting-- and, for the kids who need convincing to be interested in the book, I sometimes skip ahead. My therapy kids especially like the gorilla, the donkey (kicking behind him), and the elephant (stomping). I've also seen this book used successfully with large groups of preschoolers at daycares. It's a great book for moving around and for learning body part vocabulary and some verbs.

In Eric Carl's engaging book for toddlers, an array of animals take turns showing an action they can do and each ask a child, "Can you do it?" Each child responds by copying the action, saying "I can do it!" Preschoolers will follow the children's example and learn the names of animals, body parts and action verbs like turning, clapping, stomping, and so on -- as well as skills of following instructions and learning to perform the different actions. There's even a bit of humor on the final page when the roles switch and a child asks a parrot if it can wiggle its toe. The parrot responds "I can do it! I can do it!" The engaging sequence of similar verbal interactions is perfect for preschoolers, who are still getting oriented in the world and find reassurance in predictable patterns.

This is an interactive book that makes learning fun for the whole family. The kids learn different body parts, animal names, and movements by actively participating and imitating animals' moves.

Each spread features a new animal for kids to remember their names: a penguin, a giraffe, a buffalo, a monkey, a seal, a gorilla, a cat, a crocodile, a camel, a donkey, an elephant, and a parrot.

A penguin on the first page, for example, shows a girl how he can turn his head to the side and challenges her to do the same : "Can you do it?" The girl turns her head and answers: "I can do it!" And so it goes on with each animal and a new body part: head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, chest, back, hips, knees, legs, foot, toes. The repetition of the phrase "Can you do it?" invites listeners to answer "I can do it!" It's a perfect book for "active" listeners, play time, and group reading.

The collage illustrations are very simple yet bold and bright. Every page is full of color and texture, making objects look like they are moving or coming off the page. Simple white background compliments the colors nicely.

We are big Eric Carle fans at my house and I ordered this book simply because it was by Carle. I had no idea that this book would be the #1 fave in our household immediately! This book asks the readers to do movements like the animals in the story do. It takes some creativity and participation of the parent to show the child what to do, but once your child gets the gist of it, there will be no turning back! My son had the movements memorized within two weeks. If your child is more of a motor skills kid or is really active, this is the book for them

This book was my grandson's very favorite book when he was about eight months old, loved to do the actions, his favorite was the elephant and then the gorilla. He still enjoys bringing it out occasionally. It was getting a little ragged and little sister #2 needed a book so I got another one for the family. She just turned eight months and prefers to chew on it right now but I know she'll love it as much as the other two did. Great little book and very very durable, stood up to a lot of chewing, reading, dropping and even a drop into the tub on the previous one! Obviously I would get it again, I just did, and would definitely recommend it.

While some books by Eric Carle can be hit or miss, From Head to Toe is definitely a hit. The book walks you through a series of animals and movements, like a gorilla thumping its chest or a crocodile wiggling its hips. It then invites your child to participate.

We love the interaction. And it's pretty incredible watching my son grow with this book. At first, he could only do a couple of motions. But after a week or so, he mastered all the motions in the book—all while learning about animals, body parts, and motion.

From Head to toe is an excellent book for shaking out that last bit of energy before bedtime. It also delivers a lot of laughs.

My 3 children absolutely loved this book. I loved watching them show me what they could do. It was so funny. Now my children are grown but I still have fond memories of my special moments with them as we shared this book. I still have my copy but I am purchasing another book as a baby shower present for my daughter in law.

Oh we have so much fun with this book. We don't actually act out the physical stuff as it is meant as a winding down, bed time story, but I do crank up the funny voices for every animal, which delights my toddler (and my husband) to no end.

I read FROM HEAD TO TOE to my baby, who is now 10 months old, and to a good friend's child, who is about 22 months old. Both enjoy it!

FROM HEAD TO TOE, like all of Eric Carle's books, offers multiple kinds of learning in one book. The first page shows a penguin saying "I am a penguin and I turn my head. Can you do it?" On the facing page, a girl has turned her heaed and answers, "I can do it!" We proceed through the book, going all the way down the body: head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, chest, back, hips, knees, legs, foot, toes. At the same time, we meet an assortment of very appealing pictures of animals and learn their names: penguin, giraffe, buffalo, monkey, seal, gorilla, cat, crocodile, camel, donkey, elephant, and parrot.

I love that in the last pairing, the child takes action first: "I am I and I wiggle my toe. Can you do it?" This is followed by a parrot who copies the child wiggling his toe and says, "I can do it! I can do it!"

At our house, the 10-month-old is currently more inclined to enjoy the pictures, and is just starting to join in with the motions occasionally. The 22-month-old friend now joins in with many of the motions.

This is another great Eric Carle book, and will be a great addition to any child's early book collection.

Got this for my son when he was a little under two, and it turned out to be perfect for that time. He was at a super-active stage physically, and he just loved the idea of copying the actions in the book - from thumping his chest to wiggling his toes! He was already familiar with all the animals and the objects of the actions (chest, hips, toes, etc.), so it made it very easy and interesting for him. I suspect that this might have been a great book even a year before when he was discovering his body parts and animals. I'd suggest buying this around the age of 1 and keeping it for a long time.

I love this book for my preschool class. Bought the board book for the class library and have a larger size I read to the class. Gets the kids fully involved and therefor engaged in circle time reading. "I am a gorilla, I thump my chest. Can you do it? I can do it." After reading it once or twice I pause before saying the animal name and let the children shout it out. When I read "Can you do it?" I encourage the children to show me and say "I can do it!" Sometimes I get the animal name wrong and the children love to correct me. :) Great for a range of abilities.
This is a book I buy for baby showers or first birthdays.

When I taught English as a foreign language my 2-6 year old students enjoyed this story. They would copy each action as I read along. Now as a new mother I had to purchase this book.

We purchased this book when my daughter was 6 months old and now at 7 1/2 months she has started to copy the cat page. She tries her best to arch her back like cat when we read along. For each other page she watches attentively to see my gestures. This is an excellent story for any age.

This is one of my favorite children’s books. It evokes the joyous sound of children proudly declaring, "I can do it!" as they bend, wave, stomp and wriggle different body parts. I use it often in my Creative Movement classes to teach body awareness, self-confidence and creativity. It is one of the few books I know that deliberately encourages children to get up and move while they learn. Each page can be approached in a number of ways, expanding on ideas gained from both the illustrations and the text. I use this book with children age 2-6. They love it! Eric Carle’s illustrations are inviting, friendly, and interesting. The children are all different, loosely representing a variety of ethnic backgrounds. The message is empowering and the lessons are full of physical activity. This is a must have for any early childhood bookshelf.

This is one of my daughter's favorite books (she's one and a half). She loves imitating all the movements and she learned so many new words from the book from our first read (such as "thump" from "I am a gorilla and I thump my chest"). I highly recommend it for children around her age or a little older.

I think what makes this book so unique is the simple yet very engaging interactivity which is missing from MOST books. We read the page, look at the pictures, AND act out rather than just reading and looking at the pictures as we do with most other books.

I love Eric Carle. Love the streaky, vivid illustrations and how the illustrations always present a wide diversity of children. Love Brown Bear and Hungry Caterpillar.

But I think all parents have one book that they absolutely and possibly irrationally hate. This is my book. I don't know what it is about it but every time DD comes over to me with an expectant expression on her face and puts this book in my hands, I groan inwardly and suffer through it as many times as DD demands. I've hidden it. I've tried to relegate it to the car so she can read it alone. Somehow it finds it's way back to her bookshelf and back in to reading rotation.

I give it 0 stars. She gives it 5.

After I read this to my 15-month old for the first time, he remembered the gorilla on the cover, and that in the book the gorilla thumps his chest. Now, whenever we say "gorilla," he thumps his chest, and we recite the book text to him, which is, "I am a gorilla, and I thump my chest." Sometimes he thumps his chest w/out prompting, and we also recite the text to him. I believe the text and pictures are interesting for young toddlers, especially if read with a rhythm. However, as far as imitation goes, probably 18-month olds and older would best grasp these pictures, what the text means, and how to imitate what the animals are doing.

Another excellent Eric Carle book, best in board book version, since the target audience is susceptible to chewing, ripping, and drooling. It's the ultimate audience participation book with its "Can you do it? I can do it!" You'll have little people shrugging shoulders and stomping feet before you know it.

We have enjoyed another of Eric Carle's books--Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See--since my son was a few weeks old. So, when my son was about 7 months old, I bought From Head to Toe. It was a wonderful purchase! After a few reads, my son was imitating the animals just like his mama--waving his arms like a monkey and on his hands and knees like the cat. It was so wonderful for me to see that my son was understanding and processing the books I read to him.

This is a beautiful book for teaching young children the names of body parts. It is also a terrific animal actions book. I love this book as a parent, and as a kindergarten teacher, I think it's great too! My daughter enjoys acting out the story, and anticipates each turn of the page. As it is a board book, it is suitable for the very young, who find it completely engaging. A must have for a toddler's library!

My son (10 months old) loves this book! At first I thought it was just the big bold pictures, but I have many other Carle books and none of them compare the the reactions I get when I read him this one. He always picks it from his stack of books.

The text of this book is educational. Children are taught both the names of certain types of animals as well as body parts, and it's interactive. "I am a giraffe and I bend my neck. Can you do it?"

However, Eric Carle's style of illustrating is very distinctive. Some people really love his illustrations, but I find them very bright and garish. Also, with the illustrations not being highly realistic, recognizing Eric Carle's camel or gorilla doesn't necessarily mean a child would recognize a real one, which negates some of the educational value.

Being an educational book isn't enough for me to rate it highly. It has to be read and listened to for there to be any value. This is not a book that my 5.5, 3.5, or 2 year-old bring to me. So, apparently, it's not a favorite of theirs. I don't care for it, but there are tons of educational books that I like much better and am thrilled to read to my children.

This was a gift, so I didn't have any choice. But, I remember buying an Eric Carle book years ago because of glowing recommendations, and then disliking it greatly (and again, my kids didn't ever bring it to me like their favorites). So, I want to make sure that my view is shared, for those who are going to be in the minority like me :-)

If you like Eric Carle books, then there's no reason to not like this one. If you've never seen his books, I would recommend looking at one in person before purchasing. Everyone has their own preferences and styles. To each his own!

My 8 month old daughter is mesmerized by the pictures in this book. At her age she tends to get bored with books very quickly but she will sit through this whole book and squeals each time I turn the page. The pictures are so large and vivid.

Another gem from Eric Carle -- this one is great to get a bunch of toddlers up and moving about the room. Both my 18 month old and 3 year old love it equally -- as does everyone in their preschool classes!

Another excellent Eric Carle book, best in board book version, since the target audience is susceptible to chewing, ripping, and drooling. It's the ultimate audience participation book with its "Can you do it? I can do it!" You'll have little people shrugging shoulders and stomping feet before you know it.

The From Head to Toe Big Book by Eric Carle I ordered through the store.com arrived in record time. The Large colorful hard back book is beautiful and I am sure it will be enjoyed for years to come. We are replacing some very favorite books distroyed in Hurricane Katrina for a pre-school in Long Beach, Ms. I was so excited to send this on. We will be ordering many more books.

My 2 year old knows this book and loves this book. She knows what the next page will say before I can turn the page. She loves copying the actions of the animals and my wife laughs whenever she acts like a monkey. It is a nice book for young children.

Product came defective. Page came upside down. Daughter loves the story but the page with the donkey was upside down for some reason. Needs some quality control. I feel weird giving the book a low review for this reason.

My 3 year old daughter just saw this picture and said, "I had that when I was little!" ? I bought a copy of this book for a friend's newborn. My daughter picked this book out at the bookstore when she was 1 and she takes it to school and to church all the time. I hope our friend enjoys it as much as we do!

I cannot find how the book was rated, but I always by “good” or better and the quality of this used book is barely acceptable. It is bent, dirty, torn, very used and has a sticker on the front cover! Very disappointed!
