4 star only because I have read some truly outstanding sci-fi over the years. Didn't think I would like it at first, seemed like it would be a monster type story. Decided to read about 10 percent before quitting. Got hooked ( some monsters but more magic and human bent).

The story had me hooked almost immediately. While it wasn't as polished as other fantasy books, I still enjoyed the characters and action. The main antagonist reminded me a little of a Disney villian though. There were also points when it seemed as though the author was a little too straightforward instead of leaving some mystery to allow for nagging questions and suspense throughout the story. All in all it wasn't bad, just not on the same level as books from authors like Robert Jordan or Brandon Sanderson.

I was hooked from the very first page and couldn’t put the book down. This was my first introduction to Richard Phillips and I’m very impressed. Each page brought new adventures and characters to to the story. I have to say that I’m looking forward to reading his other books now.

Interesting world and characters. You can see the general direction where the story should go, and enjoy watching the characters fight to get there. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Intriguing storyline with interesting characters. However some of them were not well developed and am hoping that the second book fleshes them out. I liked the world the story was set in and enjoyed the details of the various sites.
