If I Built a House

Kids of many ages and many adults love to imagine a truly unique and one of a kind place to live! Kids will love to discuss what they imagine in a "home of their own and design". A great project with maybe a shoe box, construction paper, and magic markers!

My kids love this book. The main character's inventiveness in designing his dream house definitely inspires creativity in my kids. Right after they read the book they immediately wanted to go draw plans for their own houses. The other book "If I Built a Car" is also great. We'll re-read both many many times.

This is a very engaging book, which jump-starts the imagination of young children. Since reading this book, my class of preschoolers have designed their own buildings, made a city out of cardboard boxes & used blocks to create amazing constructions. The explorations continue........

This book must have been written by an Architect! Its a great book for Architect adults to give to kids, so as to encourage their imagination and introduce them to the way Architects draw and (just plain creative types) think!

In my 5th grade classroom, my students write a descriptive paper similar to Van Dusen's, If I Built a Car. Just wanted to offer another opportunity for their writing. This book illuminates through indeed!

Chris Van Dusen is by far the best childrens author of our time. His illustrations tell the stories and the stories make the adult and child want to read on to see what happens. I live in Maine and he has a way making the pine tree state look like a fantasy land. These books have opened my grandchildren minds. They like to take his stories and add their own ideas. I read a lot of books to my grandchildren and Chris's book are the ones I look forward to reading. My 1 1/2 year old little grand daughter loves Hugo, she calls him Ooogoo. Thank you Chris
