Written in typical L'Amour style. The bad guys lose, the good guy gets the girl, with an interesting twist involving a missing husband with $400 worth of gold and a lady trying to run a ranch all by herself with a bit of temporary help from a stage company making her cabin a way station. L'Amour has a strong narrative voice with excellent characterization interwoven with a subtle description of the setting. If you want to read an off beat western Conagher is the book to get. I can just picture Sam Elliott and Katherine Ross as major players in the movie Conagher as I read the book I could hear Sam Elliott's booming voice filling the book character. L Lee Parmeter Author

Conagher would teach the Ladder Five a lesson, or die trying. Louis L'Amour's hero of this book is a hard driving man, yet sympathetic enough to see no one left hurt or dying. This is one of L'Amour's best books as you can get in touch with the character and ride along with him as he makes his way. I like this one very much. I think they made a movie also starring Tom Selleck--not sure about that.

Conagher is the name of the main character in this western by Louis L'Amour. He is a loner, who as he is growing older, needs to find a permanent place to hang his hat.
Mrs. Teale, a woman who has been widowed without knowing it, runs a stage way station and dreams of raising cattle when her husband returns with the stock he is supposed to be buying. Taking care of her two step-children, she shows courage and foresight. Once she realizes that her husband is not coming back, she welcomes Conagher into her home and heart.
The descriptions of the western landscape and the people who lived there in the late 19th century make this book worth reading.

My third L’amour book and superior to the other two, primarily because it doesn’t attempt a grandiose plot, with which he loses interest later on and leaves you hanging, as with Kilrone and Rivers West. It involves on the one hand an honest cowhand/drifter helping a rancher against rustlers and on the other hand a woman whose husband disappears. The tumbleweed part was sheer genius.
