This is an interesting fairy tale story for adults. The book is nicely formatted so that you can read the captions and view the artwork on each panel on the computer. Both story and artwork are quite good and I look forward to reading more in this series.

So I really liked this graphic novel. Basically, all the characters from your favorite fairy tales have been forced out of their world to live in ours. They all have their struggles, having lost their kingdoms and forced to find work in our world as book shop keepers, detectives, or other jobs. It's pretty interesting, and the mystery that is solved in this book was enjoyable to try to figure out a long the way. The art is nice, though I don't like how the pages are so papery, they don't have any sort of finish and it makes me worried I'm going to rip it.

The art is very nice, with characters that look consistent, the pages are well laid out and never look really cluttered.

The story is pretty good, but the characters personalities are kinda wooden. I think it was the dialogue at times, it didn't feel natural to me, it sounded like writing, not the way someone would actually talk. I heard someone say that of the entire series, the first book was the worst, so maybe it's just because the writers were still getting a feel for the story and the characters. It isn't unusual for the first episode of a television series to be kinda rough so I'll give this book a break.

All in all, I liked this a lot, I'm gonna buy the second one and see how I like it :)

Ever miss your childhood friends, Snow, Cindy, Rose, Bigby...you know the usual suspects? Wonder what they're up to? Wonder no more!

Like us, they were driven from the wonderful lands of fairies to our grimy modern world and forced to assimilate. But is what's driven them away really ready to let them go that easy?

Bill Willingham is one of the top writers in comics today, and his series "Fables" has won multiple Eisner awards. I fully believe that the recent Snow White movie, Grimm TV show and the other Fables-esque TV show were all created as a result of Willingham's successful and highbrow series.

One can't read this in a vacuum. One must start with Fables volume 1 and work their way up to this. Most of the volumes are extraordinary pieces of writing: Willingham uses characters from the last 1000+ years of storytelling and is good enough at character development that we end up loving and hating a number of them. While each story arc is about 6 books, his overarching story arcs last for about 50 comics. He is a meticulous writer and planner.

This volume focuses on Snow White and Bigby Wolf's seven children and the contests to determine which one will inherit the role of the North Wind.

A solid opener. I'll probably see what more there is to be had in this world. It felt more like an introduction than a true story, but in a long graphic novel series, that can be ok. We shall see what more there is.

Such an inventive take on story tale classics. It's great to see childhood favorites re-imagined in a more adult way. There's a lot of possibility for future stories. I look forward to seeing where this goes.

I absolutely love this series. I've only been involved with it for the last year (since the Wolf Among Us), but I have to say that this is my favorite series of comics. It enthralls the reader in a world where you actually feel the setting and feel for the characters.
My copy arrived in perfect condition, and you can bet I'm gonna buy the other 21 volumes before too long

Came quick, unharmed, perfect condition. Really really good comic book. I'm not even into comic books, but this one just sucks you in, not to mention that the artwork is outstanding.Totally hits that fantasy spot.

I was a little disappointed with this story line. The final conflict could have been more. The entire storyline was just not up to par with previous story lines. I found my mind wandering while I was reading.

After the disappointment of "wolves of the heartland"this was a wonderful read. As usual, gut wrenching with a lot of adventure thrown in. Don't want to give anything away, but anyone who has enjoyed Fables so far will love it.

Great storyline! I read this comic because of the Telltale game The Wolf Among Us. The game was based upon the comics and I was very impressed. I don't know which I like more. I would highly recommend this to enjoy at any time during your day. The characters are fantastically drawn and given amazing voices through the written dialogue. This is great for all ages, young or old, but be warned of adult content

As usual fables manages to suprise. The plot climax always manages to looping the story back to some detail that was mentioned 3 or 4 books ago that you had completely forgotten about. And of course there are plenty of loose ends to keep you waiting for the next addition

The writing was excellent except too much of the story involved a flashback which regular readers of Fables will already know. Perhaps it was necessary for people who are not familiar with Fables but I think they could have done it just as well in fewer pages. The artwork was disappointing - at times it seemed more like sketchings.

Although the story does feel a bit like its walking the path of Once Upon a Time, The Librarians, and others out there, the beauty of this graphic novel is that the artwork does such a fantastic job of selling it particular take on the genre. The conceit (just like Once Upon a Time) is that all the fairytale characters got kicked out of their land hundreds of years ago and are now living in Exile in New York City. Unlike OUAT, these characters are urban through and through, and the animals didn't always become human. There is a strong dose of politics thrown in as well when the history of the exile is discussed. The backstories on the characters are quite a bit more adult than OUAT. Snow is a Career Woman and Charming is a cad. Beauty and Beast have marriage problems. The reformed Wolf is a world-weary detective. It's a quick read and definitely not for the tween crowd (violence, nudity, language, adult situations), but I would highly recommend it for those who enjoy a good dose of maturity in their fairy tales.

Short story but a fun read. Willingham has created a unique world using many of the classic tales we know as kids. The video gane Wolf Among Us got me interested in the series and I found that the books follow the same twist and turns of classic mystery and suspense with a dose of romance.

The first Volume of Fables was a surprise. I began reading the series because of the Telltale game, and the comics follow a different story, at least so far. The art is wonderful, and I can't wait to continue reading.

Fables has been one of my favorite books since it came out. Recently, however, I felt the series was lagging somewhat. With this book, Willingham returns to form. The story is tightly wound and packs a whallup of a punch. The cub's characters come to life nicely. I hope the series goes forward with the energy from this book.

Fables has one of the best reputations of comics. An extremely long-running series from Vertigo with multiple spin-offs, this series set the standard for sweeping, genre-reimagining tales.

The basic set-up for the story is fairly simple. Hundreds of years ago, all of the old fairy tales lived in a different world, until they were forced out by 'the adversary'. They have now set up a community in New York City, and do their best to make sure the human world doesn't find out about them. This group collectively calls themselves the highly imaginative name of 'the Fables'.

This first arc is a standard mystery set up. Rose red's apartment has been trashed, and it's the job of Bigby Wolf (think about it) to discover what happened. There's a lot of world-building for future arcs, such as the fable government, and the fact that there is a second community on a farm for the animal fables. Overall, I was very impressed with this story, and expect the next arc to be even better.

Great story, the characters of old fairy tales come alive in this "modern" re imagining, with New York as the urban backdrop for the story. The art and dialogue are better than I expected considering it's "just" a comic book, and most certainly won't make you feel embarrassed to read or talk about with your "more" mature friends. (I guess I have already exceeded the amount of quoting permitted in a review, so I will stop doing it now.) There is one story arc divided in 5 chapters, with what I assume is the original cover art (and a bonus one, I guess), and a Bill Willingham story called "A wolf in the fold" spanning 6 pages, not much in the way of extras but for the price I don't see how this is a bad thing, I got addicted and will definitely keep adding them to my collection as long as the material is good. This is actually the first comic that I have ever considered collecting in full, it is that good, in my opinion anyway.

This book has no ties to the main Fables universe and therefore isn't critical to the overall Fables journey. That being said, if you are a fan of Bigby Wolf then you should pick this up for a fun read.

This is the beginning of great story involving intricate plot, interesting characters, and beautiful places. I would not recommend this book for those under 14 though, since it can be graphic sometimes. I would also not recommend this for anyone without a decent amount of free time. Once you get started, I have no doubt in my mind that you will get sucked in and go in read the other books in this series.

This is not to be missed though. It is truly a unique and amazing book.

I played through the game based on this series " The Wolf Among us" and fell in love with the universe. If you are a fan of mystery, then its for you, or if you are a fan of the idea of old fables but with a more realistic dark tone, then it is also perfect.

After reading the previous issue I was pleasantly surprised that this one got the series back on track. It's dealing with the issues that ended in Fables 12 and does a very good job of ignoring what happened in Fables 13.

One of the darkest and grimmest Fables yet. I can't really say much more without giving spoilers, but parents beware of this issue. This shows how good of a writer Bill Willingham is though. I thought it was some of the best Fables writing in a while. I should mention that this does not include the Oz tales as it says in the ads. Instead, you get the two-part arc of The Destiny Game. If you're a fan of Fables this will not disappoint you. It brings back the hard-hitting tales the comic use to have. And this one hits you hard.

A very interesting and classic book which has become one of Vertigos more well know titles and is commonly ranked among most top 100 graphic novel lists. The story features a great many famous fairy tale charactors (who have passed into public domain) living in New York (upstate and city) as they solve a whodunit murder mystery and begin to introduce readers to the who, what, and how of this long running series. The story mostly focuses on Bigsby (the big bad wolf) in a detective persona and Snow White who is the leader of the fables. If you enjoyed ABC's show Once Upon A Time, then Fables will be right up your alley. This book was akin to a more light hearted and whimsical League Of Extraordinary Gentleman but still had enough mature content to keep from coming off as silly or watered down. DC comics runs most of their darker and more mature books through their Vertigo title after all.

Awesome book! Got started with the video game and fell in love with the characters, now I'm moving onto the comics. Highly recommend this series to anyone, as long as they don't mind some gore, violence and explicit content. I can't wait to delve further into the depths of Fabletown and it's citizens!

This is a great series of graphic novels. This arrived on time and is in great condition. I am crazy about all things fairy tale especially when they are done in cool and different ways like this. I'm very pleased with this.

Well, it seems like every loyal Fables reader on the internet has been bashing the anticlimactic ending to the Dark Man arc, but I must admit that it was befitting. Not every single war ends with a great, showy battle. The noble sacrifice of one man is sometimes enough to warrant an end to even the greatest of conflicts, and this is certainly the case in the Dark Man arc's ending. Surprisingly, or perhaps not so, this book provides a respite from the seriousness of the last book by providing Pinocchio's vision of a 'super team' to defeat Mr. Dark and also a chapter on the misadventures of Bufkin, who journeys 'home' after many days of climbing a very tall tree. I would recommend this book, but I am such a huge fan of the series that my love for the art and the characters may diminish the faults of this book, which it undoubtedly has. For someone looking for an exciting end to the Dark Man arc, I suggest you borrow this book to read instead of buying it. However, for someone whose love of the series is already enough to warrant a purchase of the book, you will not be disappointed. The art is as good as ever, and Bill Willingham does not disappoint in his clever witticisms that populate every single Fables issue. Overall, a worthwhile read.
