Wasn't what I was expecting considering the long history of BV Larson hits and good sagas. I found it to be a little far fetched from time to time throughout the book. Otherwise the idea for the story plot was a good one just needed to be more realistic and the characters a little more believable than what they were.

This began with visitors arrived on earth. They came to select a group of people to join a rebel force to protect a large number of planets. Each planet had humanoids that came from the same group called The Khers. Strange phenomena was occurring in the skies of earth. The ships were visiting many other planets. People were selected and put through a variety of tests. Those who passed became a team which flew spaceships in battles with another group who was destroying planets in the Orion Arm.

Read the book to find out how the earths team was tested and trained. There is much to discern about the hundreds of teams from other planets as well. Then there are battles to save all the planets who provided a team.

Much better than the Undying Mercenaries series but not without flaws. I find it hard to believe a ship travels to a solar system only to pick up five people and not a small armies worth?! The alien forces seem poorly supported, but conveniently put off explaining by constant use of arrogance. But unlike the "Mercenaries" series, the lead character is much more normal and more likable. If there are other books I may co spider reading them, depending on what the store bills for them, certainly not full paperback price type material but worthy of time-kill and simple entertainment.
Alpha Fleet (Rebel Fleet Series) :: A classic spy novel of intrigue and suspense set in the Second World War :: The Night Manager (Penguin Modern Classics) by Carré :: Night Watchman (The Tubby Dubonnet Series) (Volume 7) :: Ashes in the Wind

It's OK, but . . .The repetitive insertion of distrustful "I think you're scheming" and notions of disreputable, untrustworthy, inherently sneaky, slippery humans in the reactions of every individual with any authority in the rebel fleet to every success gained by the principal character is stupid, and makes the story less believable the longer it goes on. Clearly, the rebel fleet's leaders depend on primates to gain successes against their oppressive Galactic opponents, who seem to see the people in less-developed civilizations as roaches, to be stomped out if noticed at all. And just as clearly, military success against their oppression is the only way to open a path to survival -- much less independence -- in the face of such barbaric xenophobia. But somehow, the author's vision is that all of the "rebel" societies are locked in a box, only able to imagine staving off the latest exterminative sweep till the Big Bad Overseers lose interest and go back to sleep. Oh, Bother!

The whole premise was terrible. The idiotic constant fighting amongst supposed allies, the completely insane strategy utilized by the rebels, all led ro a really disappointing book. If you haven't read it dont bother

From tragic victim to kidnap victim to mastered apprentice to dangerous combatant to exalted hero in a matter of 90 days by my count. I've seen bobble heads with more depth and had bowel movements with more surprise. Complete train wreck from start to finish.

I hope the author reads this. The book started a little slow, but became a book I could not put down. I've enjoyed all your books on Kindle, this one is in the top 10. I could see this going further and I hope you will write it. It's time for the survivors to put together a force of their own. Earth, or back into space, either one I will buy.

Good story, but frankly a bit too familiar to his other series, and much less character development. All the characters and the plot were very much along the lines of everything else he's written, but seems to come off as something he did over the weekend. I was able to get through it, but I won't be buying the next one. This new series is done for me.

Catches you quickly and keeps the pace going. Nothing too fancy here, just a good solid sci-fi page turner.

If I was to be picky I would say the ending is pretty quick. I think Mr. Larson is setting up a return to this universe to continue the story

Very pleased with the purchase and will buy the sequel if they are out there.

Another good one from BV Larson. I must've bought 15+ of his books by now and they are always enjoyable. I don't know where this one goes in a sequel, but I look forward to finding out. I'd love to see another novel in Undying Mercenaries or Star Force series first, but this is a great third franchise to look forward to.

I had a very enjoyable time reading this novel. I had planned on spreading it out over a week but actually finished it in two nights. Larson writes in a very visual style (scenes and action are described with just enough detail to make them seem real without a lot of time spent on exploring emotional conflicts or motivations). He is definitely on my favorites list now.

Enjoyable from the first chapters, initially with the question in your mind, where is this going. As the story progresses, it builds with twists that leave you wanting to keep reading. Prepare for some lost shuteye.

I think the world which the author built is fascinating, and the mystery which the reader and the characters experience as they are introduced to it was captivating. Bloody good work, in my opinion. I can't wait to see what more Larson has in store for us

Total Averaged Score: 4.8

Would I recommend this book to a friend? Yes Definitely.
Would I read this again in the future? Yes Definitely.
Would I pre-order the next book without waiting for reviews? Most likely.
Readability- 4.9 Well written. Good to excellent word usage. Good wordsmithing. Characters come alive with great action.
Editing 4.5 stars. Several areas are good but could be used to expand the characters and make the story great. Some events come a little too easy to overcome without effort. It is hard to compare to the Swarm (5 Stars) but very worth the read.
Intended audience Young adult to adult.
Worth the price? Yes

Good start and looking forward to the next book.

Action packed within a logical progression of events. Story flows well from a womanizing beach bum to space fighter pilot. The hero has no idea what is happening to him but bests each barrier in true soap opera style. A great read from my favorite author, leaving me wanting many more episodes

Perfect read, when you need to relax and the author to guide you through a thrilling, fast developing and yet in parts, humorous story. I loved it and i laughed in parts where the author mirrored some human traits in the different races of aliens - entertaining!

All characters act with the subtlety and insight of a none too bright 12 year old. Of course that may be the target market for this book. The plot is very simplistic: 1) Meet a new character. 2) Trade insults. 3) Fight and win. 4) Have sex with female of whatever species.
Obviously, I will not be reading anything else from this author.

There are many reasons i enjoyed this book. Primarily it is because this is the full story and I felt satisfied at the end. The beginning was not boring or pedantic. It was so different than the book summary that at first i though i had bought the wrong book.

I wanted to stop in the middle of the story and recommend the book. That is how much i enjoyed it.

Too 10 of all the spece opera books i have read. Granted i am not a book critic, but i am including all the classics in that 10.

Wow. I honestly purchased this book simply because I am a big fan of the author and have enjoyed countless of his previous books. So when I saw he released a new stand alone book (hopefully this will turn into a series) I knew I had to give it a try. I am so happy that I did! What a different take on a space opera. The universe described is nothing that I was expecting. The ideas were fresh and it was a nice change of pace from others in this genre. For me it started a little slowly and kept me guessing right from the start. It was hard to stop reading this book that's how encompassing it was for me. I literally couldn't put it down and ended up reading it practically in one sitting. Although it's not a short book I finished it in one day and it left me craving a follow up book in this series. WARNING semi spoiler ahead. The author ended this story but left it open ended so that he could easily write a 2nd in this story. I really liked the characters, some of the aliens were hard to understand their motivations and reasoning but it all comes together to give you an action packed story. I like that the hero is a bit of a ladies man (even if the ladies are a different species). I also like the small similarities and easter eggs like Kehr (or should I say Kerr?), a small nod to the starforce books. I really want this series to continue and I would absolutely recommend this book to any fan of sci fi or fantasy. Don't wait just jump right in and start reading this today you will not be disappointed!
