This book did an excellent job wrapping up a loose end from the first book, and following up with the massive changes going on throughout the world. The only reason why I am not giving it Five stars is that I do not think that the story progressed enough. Emily simply was not nearly as active as I would have thought she would have been by now. This issue is not nearly as bad as it is with Harry Dresden, but it still exists thus taking away a star.

That said, I love this series passionately and eagerly await the next installment.

I've just finished reading this as the previous two in the series. Its been terrific and I'd heartily recommend them. Never a chance to get bored, fast paced and always a new idea. Great job. Can't wait to find number four on the store.

Overall a good entry in the series. However I spent most of the book somewhat outraged at the actions and decisions of several of the characters. It all came together at the end with a twist I won't spoil.
Past Tense (Schooled in Magic Book 10) :: A Learning Experience, Book 1 :: The Gordian Knot (Schooled in Magic Book 13) :: The School of Hard Knocks (Schooled in Magic Book 5) :: Stories About the 12 Hardest Things I'm Learning to Say

Ok so, been reading the series since the first book. I even posted on Nuttall's FB, telling him that I was hungry for more literature.
I recommend reading from book 1.
Thanks Christopher, for being amazing!

"Emily snorted", "Lady Barb Snorted in response" WTF is up with all the snorting? I think the author thinks it means something other than what it represents to the rest of the world. If you can look past this, its a good read. Otherwise its a book of pigs acting as humans. A lot of freaking snorting!

The author ignores the fact the Emily could have nuke, disintegrate, or any other of a massive amount of ways you could kill someone or something that they wouldn't know about. Lin should have been a joke.

This is a thrilling story that starts out like Harry Potter at Hogwarts and morphs into a mystery very much like John Campbell's "Who Goes There." encased with a regular whodunit. I think that's enough for spoilers. I am a fan of Chris Nuttall's writing and have given him many positive reviews. He has been getting better. The characters are well fleshed out along with their motivations. I also could hardly wait for the denoument and it was a surprise.

This "chapter" of the ongoing story is as engaging as the previous two. I have a hard time putting these stories down as the writing immerses me in a well developed magical world and I want to know what will happen next. I am always rooting for the likable and "flawed" heroine to overcome both her external (large) opposition, and internal ( smaller but key) obstacles. The violence level is lower than many of the others I am reading ( there are usually human casualties in each book - some caused by the heroine) however the threat of large and dire results to Emily and her entire world through evolving animosities and opposition factions continues to rise across the series. The transient supporting characters are moderately developed in the books and key supporting characters (the Grand Master, Lady Barb, and Void etc) get additional character development judiciously added across all three. I am planning on completing the series if it continues to be engaging as the first three.
