Dan Millman never disappoints. The Journey's of Socrates is an incredible book! Dan has refined his writing to the T and this book is so interesting, captivating, and the end throughs you off the horse! This book is a must read for those who have read The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior and Sacred Journey Of The Peaceful Warrior. Just Amazing and really puts the icing on the cake.

I found the background music interfered with my ability to hear the spoken word in this cd. To be honest, when I want to hear a book I want to hear the book, not music - unless fitting to the story and much softer.

Fell in love with Socrates in Way of the Peaceful Warrior. This book explains how Socrates became who he is and how he came to understand all that he shared in Way of the Peaceful Warrior. Wonderful story with powerful insights. Jim Phillips~ author of The Key to LIFE. The Key to LIFE: Living In Full Expression

I loved Dan Millman "peaceful warrior " , but was unable to relate to the journey of Socrates.
It lacked the beautiful storytelling and guidance in Mr. Millman initial creation.
Wish him only the best
Lots of love

This novel, though written later, is a prequel to Way of the Peaceful Warrior and Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior. As with those novels, there is much debate on what is fact and what is fiction. From my perspective, that debate doesn't matter...this is an enjoyable read, which echoes the leanings and lessons of the first two novels.
For pure reading enjoyment, I would rank this one with the Way of the Peaceful Warrior. The Journeys of Socrates is a better story, with less lecturing/preachiness of the original Peaceful Warrior, while the Way novel laid out Millman's personal philosophies in more detail.
I also enjoyed the Russian history and culture included in this novel. Insights into both Russian Jewish plight and livings and Cossacks are provided.
Sergei/Socrates experiences enormous heartache and challenges, some violently so, mainly to drive home the point of Mr. Millman's "peaceful warrior" teachings: martial artists/warriors train not to fight, but to gain peace through self-control and deeper internal understanding. By having half Jewish/half Cossasck Sergei experience and witness loss, feel revenge and work at overcoming those violent feelings, Millman drives home this point in a way that the setting of the first two books would not allow.
I also enjoyed the views into the Russian "martial arts", without mentioning Systema. The concept of "bracing" (dousing yourself with cold water everyday to build up strength and immunities) and breathing methods are well weaved into the fabric of the story of Sergei's training.
I would have enjoyed more detail on the "world council of martial artists" that is mentioned a few times towards the end of the book. A potential fourth novel, Mr. Millman?
Final note: there is a certain amount of violence and loss in this novel, some scenes which may bother some readers.

If you were like me you were incredibly curious about the mysterious Socrates. Who was he? Where did he come from? Was he a real person?
This book is all about his life in Russia and how he came to be. It also explains how he came into his "peaceful" power, his family background and how he came to the United States. I'm not going to go into too much detail but I will say it's a definite must-read as a companion to "Way of the Peaceful Warrior."
It can be a bit slow at times and unless you're familiar with Russian names it can also take a bit of thinking to keep track of characters. Some of them have other names they use. Socrates has three at some points and for me, it took a little more careful reading. Doesn't make it less interesting, though.
However, there are three big shockers that will keep you glued to the book. Especially the ending which had me gasp twice, keep reading and blown away by what else Millman discovered. You'll never guess what Dan discovered about Socrates at the end but be amazed when you do; It makes WotPW much, much more personal for Dan.
Definite must-read for fans of the first book -- newcomers, should most definitely read "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" first. That way it would make much more sense.

"The Journeys of Socrates" by Dan Millman
A wonderful novel, with a fascinating story, and interesting characters. I never wanted to put it down, always wanting to know what would happen next.
Although written after "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior" and "Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior", this book is really a prequel to both. It is also a completely different type of books than either of is predecessors. The first two books were both weak on story, and loaded on philosophy and spirituality. This book is just the opposite, a masterful story, and very light on philosophy. The philosophy is there, but is an unobtrusive underlying element.
This is book to read for it's pure entertainment value, but not so much for enlightenment or inspiration.

A profoundly beautiful book, describing the harrowing early life of Millman's mentor as he suffers through unimaginable tragedies in order to emerge as the wise man we know as Socrates in Millman's other warrior tales. Although not as openly instructive as Way of the Warrior, I found this book affected me even more deeply.
I can't go into the details without giving away the story, but I would suggest that anyone who has experienced sorrow, loss or has suffered at the hands of other people - anyone who carries the burden of unrequited anger, anyone who smoulders with thoughts of revenge, or anyone who allows their past to weigh them down - may find some peace within the pages of this book.
Highly recommended.

In this novel, Socrates, the mysterious guru figure from "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior" is revealed. The story of his life is an inspiring
saga of the triumph of the spirit. As the ptotagonist struggles against
almost impossible odds to avenge a hideous crime, we see him learn and
grow into the master martial artist that we first encountered in "Way of the Peaceful Warrior." History, martial arts, mysticism, all wrapped
in a wonderful tale of adventure, this book has it all.

If your reading this than you must have also read Way of the Peaceful Warrior and Sacred Journey of The Peaceful Warrior. If you have not read those 2 books, please read them first. They will plant a seed in you that will change your life.
This is a great novel about the life journey of Socrates with an ending that will not only shock you... it may just bring tears to your eyes as it did to mine.
Dan's books have been the easiest, most influencing books I have read that dont push and preach like many other spiritual styled books. How he is able to portray his messages with such clarity and make the emotions come alive is beyond me? I have not come across any other individual that has been able to touch me so deeply.
I wish the best to all and I thank you Dan for sharing your stories with us.
I do hope that this is not the end to the Warrior saga?
Peace

This prequel to "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" is an enthralling, historically-inspired novel that answers many questions about how Socrates became a warrior and poses many more about how he became a peaceful warrior. His journeys tell the tale of the stark realities within and around him amidst the deeply personal and archetypal cycles of birth, death, and a higher birth once again; tragedies, trials, triumphs, and transformations that shaped his life as a young man, an accomplished warrior, and an emerging sage.
The revelations at the end do not complete the story as much as they offer the key to unlocking a previously well-kept yet heartwarming mystery about the deep connections between Millman and his peaceful warrior mentor. Socrates' pivotal yet thinly recounted trip to the "rooftop of the world," as well as his return trip on an "urgent mission" years later certainly bode well for one or two sequels to this tale, filling in even more of the tapestry that binds together Socrates, Millman, and his readers.

Simply spellbinding and amazing. This story capitvated me from page one. If you had told me I would fall in love with a story about a "warrior in training out to avenge the death of loved ones" I would have said you are crazy. This beautifully told story weaves deep spritiual truth throughout the life & times of one man in Russia/Ukraine during the early 1900's. I read every word and found some of the best and most satisfying surprises in the last few pages after the story ends.

This was one of the most entertaining books I have read in a long time. Few books have been able to so thoroughly enthrall me in the story as to force me to have to pace myself in order to saver and properly digest the magnitude of the events taking place as this book. Socrates's life story as narrated by Millman, did so. I found it to be a very important key to the mysterious man named Socrates who's lessons truly have changed lives. Millman's Way of the Peaceful Warrior and Sacret Journeys takes on new weight and meaning through this work. A true "MUST READ"

Though well written and interesting in some ways, this books relies too much on unlikely coincidences and the mystical or superhuman capabilities of its characters. Also, too many of the plot twists are telegraphed to the reader in advance, and in a fashion that is really too obvious.

THIS BOOK IS AN AMAZING ROLER COASTER OF EMOTIONS AS YOU UNRAVEL THE LIFE OF SOCRATES, THE WISE OLD MENTOR FROM THE WAY OF THE PEACEFUL WARRIOR SERIES. IT HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, EVEN THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ THE PREVIOUS MILLMAN BOOKS. IT IS AN ENCHANTING JOURNEY THAT LEADS YOU THROUGH THE CITIES, TOWNS AND RUGGED LANDSCAPE OF RUSSIA. YOU BECOME APART OF THE LIFES OF THE CHARACTERS, FEELING ALL THEIR HIGHS AND LOWS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN CURLING UP FOR A WEEKEND AND BEING TAKEN BACK TO A TIME WHEN LOVE, HONOUR AND RESPECT WERE A MANS DRIVING FORCE. I RECOMMEND ALL DAN MILLMANS BOOKS...

AWESOME!!!
The story was amazingly told and so enjoyable to read. I could hardly put the book down. Not only was the story a pleasure to read I found myself constantly reflecting on my own life. The possibility for real life learning is found inside an entertaining and enjoyable story, I wish all of my college text books had been written so. :)

A little slow getting started - I couldn't figure out where the story line was headed, but having read Millman's other work I stuck with it. I didn't like the graphic 'dark' parts; my consciousness could do without those images, but as I got into the second part of the book there were a number of aha's and I started feeling like my spirit was being uplifted as I continued to read.
Overall an inspiring story.

This book was very moving in its spiritual and emotional growth experience that Socrates goes through. I think that anyone who has had even one tenth of the things happen to them that happened to him and can grow and develop like he does is an awesome accomplishment. This book is an excellent story with a moral for any age reader.

Simple and emotionally engaging. I think most Dan Millman fans will really enjoy this new adventure, although they may be a little disappointed in the lack of straight-forward teaching found in the other two Peaceful Warrior books. However, the story itself is riviting, and full of wisdom. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Dan's work.

If you have read the "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" then you know Dan Millamn's gift as a writer. I have enjoyed reading this book more than any other book in years, and I would highly recommend it to anybody. Be prepared for a wonderful journey and even more wonderful ending. I am sure that this is going to make a great movie some day.
