Fields of Fire (Frontlines)

This is a futuristic war story, the fifth of five installments and I've been hooked from the first book! Kloos has managed to pen interesting kick butt characters and a not hard to imagine futuristic plot. This series by Marko Kloos reminds me of Joe Haldeman's Forever War, one of my all time favorites.

Man I love this series! Each book is a continuation of the one before it, but they are each individually telling as well. The character growth and world building is phenomenal. I cannot wait to read more from Marko Kloos.

Combined Earth forces go back to Mars to wrest it away from the Lankies and mayhem ensues. The book is a nail-biting page turner and effectively advances the series. Superb military sci-fi, right up there with the very best I have read.

Great story, good action...should have been some correlations between Iceland and the prep for Mars. A formidable foe they are and somehow they need to develop a counter, be it a biologic or a virus.

I discovered this series a couple months ago and have blasted through all five available books in it. I can't wait for book six to come out, and I highly recommend the series to anyone who appreciates a good military sci-fi read akin to The Forever War.

The pace of the story accelerates relentlessly. This installment of the Frontlines series brings new challenges to the protagonists and confirms that longstanding theories of warfare do not change when your opponent is not human. Yes you can underestimate the cunning and guile of a hundred foot tall alien. Can't wait for book 6!

I've read several sci fi and post apocalyptic series. Every single series eventually reaches the point where I just want it be over. Not so with Frontlines!! I love this series and could read dozens more.

The best combat space opera I have read. This series just gets better, if that's possible. If you have ground pounder experience, the dialogue is spot on. This series reminds me of the writing of Harold Coyle's, Team Yankee.

I automatically read everything Marko Writes. I like his style of writing, though a bit dark at times. The character becomes a bit jaded at the end, but after what happens to him you expect that. I like this book and recommend this auther.

Frontlines keeps getting better with every instalment. The enemy is just as dynamic as the protagonists. Fans of Heinlein will be as pleased with this series as fans of Tolkien are with A Song of Ice And Fire.

I continue to enjoy this series!! I am really looking forward to more in the series. This author can slow you down and suddenly grab your undivided attention, when you just can't put the book down!!! Fantastic!

Enjoyable read and a series I intend to keep reading if/as it continues. This book is packed full of military action as humanity finally pushes on Mars. As expected, nothing exactly goes to plan but satisfying.

Any fan of military-science fiction will enjoy this book and series.

Kloos has the rare ability to make the non-action parts of a war story as interesting as the rest of his book. I noticed this in Book 1 and it's been a consistent theme all the way though: lots of back-story and personal refection without the inter-cranial drama other authors seem to fall into. Kloos doesn't need non-stop explosions to keep you involved in the story; somehow you are glued to it even when things are quiet. If you are tired of the "Michael Bay Style" of story-telling, Kloos is breath of air. As a veteran I can say that Kloos has the military bureaucracy pegged hands down better than anyone else I have read. And somehow he makes even that seem interesting. I never thought I'd ever find "hurry up and wait" interesting, but he does it. Combat scenes are still plentiful, and the chaos inherent in war is always evident. Nothing ever goes according to plan, but good soldiers expect it and deal with it. And Andrew Grayson is a good soldier.

As for the story, it's no spoiler to say Mars is the objective. This is Earth's chance to strike back, and humanity has unified in common arms. No more internecine fighting; the Russians, Chinese, NAC and Europeans are not only allied, they have also dropped all pretense of division. Former enemy troops are sharing berthing, ships, weapons, intel, equipment and secrets without drama or even an dramatic kumbaya moment. In essence, humans need to put up or die as one team. It's not discussed ad nauseaum (or even at all) - it just happens.

The humans learn a bit more about the Lankies in this volume - probably a bit more than they wanted to learn. A lot of assumptions about Lankies are washed away, and the new questions are maybe a bit more dark than previously suspected.

Kloos doesn't lure you into the cliffhanger trap - the story ends on a solid footing even though there is a lot more arc to cover in future tomes. I look forward to seeing another (hopefully) soon.

Marko Kloos is a fantastic author who seems to be getting better and better at his profession if that's even possible. Reading this book makes you feel like you are on Mars fighting the Lankies alongside Lt. Grayson. As I write this I am still haunted by the fog of war. The Frontline Series is top notch and Fields of Fire is the best so far. I recommend it without reservation.

The Frontline series started off similarly to many others in the genre, oftentimes even feeling cliché (but still so good!). However, with this latest entry in the series, Marko Kloos comes into his own as an author. The writing is markedly improved, the characters more real, and the story no longer feels like it uses clichés so much as it alludes to the greats that preceeded it, while remaining original.

The Frontlines series is a must-read for any fan of military sci-fi.

I've enjoyed Mr. Kloos's Frontlines Series very much. Unlike many series installments, e.g. Stephen King Dark Tower, I found Fields of Fire easy to pick up and read without needing to go back to Terms of Enlistment and re-read the series to understand what's going on. That's a big deal for me as is the succinct writing and accurate editing.

Absolutely love this series and anxiously await the next book, always. Actually, I listen to and or reread all the previously written books in this series in preparation for the next book. I enjoy the twists and turns of the action and events taking place throughout the books, most of which are unexpected. The imagination of the author, Marko Kloos, is amazing. I have recommended this series to many people and they too, are hooked.

I've read the entire series and have enjoyed every bit of it, but this one takes it to a whole new level. Action packed but with a fully fleshed out story. This book lacks nothing.

Mr. Kloos, you better be at work on the next one!

people that makes it a much better than average novel of military science fiction. The entire Front Line series is highly recommended.
