Louise Penny doesn't fail the reader. The characters become more real - and often surprising - with each book in the series. I love that Inspector Gamache is so dependable and I actually laugh out loud at some of the interplay among the village regulars.

I love the Inspector Gamache series. I read all 12 in a row, and it was, quite frankly, enormous fun. Some are better than others, but in each story there is always kindness, thoughtfulness and a life lesson: do the right thing. Inspector Gamache and his band of friends and colleagues in this small town set in the middle of nowhere bring out the best in each other. If you are looking for a fun series, start and end here. They are just great reads.

Characters are well developed, and following them is just as intriguing as following the mystery itself. There is an underlying backstory that weaves its way through all the books, making you want to read the next one in the series right away.
The Cruelest Month (Chief Inspector Gamache Novel) :: The Hangman (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache Novella) :: A British Mystery (Emily Castles Mysteries Book 1) :: If I Was Your Girl :: MURDER ON THE OXFORD CANAL a gripping crime mystery full of twists

If you like writers such as Martha Grimes, Debra Crombie and Colin Dexter you will enjoy this series. Set in Quebec, the author has filled the village of Three Pines with interesting and complex residents. To the quiet village must come a sophisticated and dedicated homicide team to find the killers that live among them. A fun read and each successive book reveals the secrets of each very human character. As a resident of the US I have found the history and complex relationship between the English and French residents of Quebec very enlightening. A history lesson along with interesting mysteries. I would recommend that a new reader start with the first book of the series (Still Life) and read in order.

Typical Louise Penny Books. Love the inspector and his subordinates. These are easy reading and suitable for when you don't want to have to tax your mind even though the killer is not always evident. Perfect for a trip or airport and plane ride. Supposedly each book is a stand alone story but I would strongly suggest reading them in order. Likable characters. Plan on reading the rest of her books and hope she keeps writing.
