While Mr. Whitman and associates may be experts in the HVAC field, they obviously are not effective textbook authors for a beginning HVAC course. The book is cumbersome, somewhat confusing, and very hard to follow. The end of chapter questions are more than difficult to answer based on the information given in the chapter. Little emphasis is put on "important" points and ideas. In some cases, throughout the book, a subject is mentioned with little or no detail follow-up, and in other instances excessive detail is given and never mentioned again. Even the Glossary and Index are ill-organized and incomplete. I would not recommend it to be used as a textbook for a beginning HVAC course.

This will take me through all three classes I need, and it has helped me on the job already. I am an equipment maintenance person at a medical facility, and was recently informed that our department would be handling refrigerator maintenance whether through a vendor or not. I decided to take on the challenge to not only save the company some money (we are non profit), but to also add to my skill set. This book is thorough, easy to understand, and is so heavy, it will even give you a workout for hefting cannisters of refrigerant around once you start your career! That said, I wish it came in electronic form as well.

I wouldn't recommend this book unless you need it for a school or something similar. I've been using it for a couple weeks now and dislike various things about it. One reason is that some of the chapter review questions ask you things you haven't even covered yet.

Most courses use this book to teach the basics of HVAC. Its heavy and can be used as a weapon of mass annoyances. Its not too hard to nor none too easy to read. If its required for a class, pick this book up. There is another book out there that I've read that is much more relevant and easier to follow than this book.
Use it for the classes and sell this book off when you can. If you need a good quick, complete, and easy reference that is not "Google" then get for Commercial Refrigeration: For Air Conditioning Technicians by Dick Wirz. Or an Answerman for HVAC technicians for a quick pocket reference.

Studying this subject in tech school, so its required reading. Having used a college textbook a time or two, I find it to be a disorganized mess. Sure, the information is sound, and comprehensive, but the index is practically worthless. The review questions sometimes send me to google, because its difficult to locate the information a second time if you don't remember encountering it while reading. I also found the companion lab manual to be downright incorrect and not consistent with the information in the book. You'd think after milking it for 7 editions, this elementary stuff would be sorted out by now.
Not sure if there are other resources out there, but if its not required reading, you might should pass on this one.

Book is comprehensive and then some. Book is a little heavy too carry around though. I would definitely recommend this to someone. I would highly recommend a young man to learn heating and air conditioning and get into this field. The reason is because you will make lots of money, you will become a rich man, and last but not least you will have all kinds of money and all kinds of women besides. Thank You, Carter 4/3/2014

Our community college charges $150 for this book and you cant write in it and will have to return when class is over. They sell it on here for $90 which is $60 CHEAPER and you can write in it and keep it

Excellent book for HVAC/R technical details and information. This helps you with Everything to do with HVAC and anything related to HVAC.
This is the HVAC Bible for lack of a better explanation.
