The first book was great and I absolutely loved it. The 2nd book unfortunately I didnt like that much and it was a bit of a re-hash of the first one. Last book was quite scary but well worth the read!

An amazing and heart wrenching re telling of the harsh conditions of the East Enders up until the late fifties. However in spite of these conditions they fostered a wonderful spirit of community the like of which one just doesn't see today. The spiritual journey of Jenny Lee and her life with the nuns and other midwives was another element of the book that was very interesting and inspirational.

Great read! Jennifer Worth brings to life the people of the East End of London during the 1950's. You are transformed to another era! I've enjoyed watching Call the Midwives on PBS, but the books are so much more insightful. If you like the TV series, you will LOVE THE BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!
In the Midst of Life :: Call the Midwife: Farewell to the East End :: Collection 3 Books Set Call the Midwife - Shadows of the Workhouse :: My Life as a Trainee Nurse in 1950s Yorkshire - Yes Sister :: Island of Lost Girls: A Novel

I loved the historical information in this work. I found it sometimes disjointed in its organization but overall it was personal, anecdotal and a wonderful read. From book to book it seemed to be somewhat repetitive but if one is not reading the work as a trilogy the repeated stories or references would be appropriate. Wonderful insight to the life of Jennifer Worth and the people she touched.

Jennifer Worth's book is familiar to those who have views the tv series, but goes further into the history - often untold stories of what women went through in earlier generations (not just 1950s) - told through characters and events. I look forward to my hours of commuting with such a "good read" to look forward to.

If you liked the television program, you'll love the books.
If you haven't seen the television program, do yourself a favour and watch it.
The books are highly recommended. Gives an insight into not only the work done by the midwives but also what life was like at that time.

Such a great deal! All three of these historical accounts in one volume for a fraction of the cost of buying all three separately. A wonderful companion book to the PBS British classic CALL THE MIDWIFE.

Excellent book which captures the hope of mankind in the midst of the utter depravity of the terrible slums of East London. The midwives and the nuns labor side by side to alleviate the suffering of daily life and to experience the joy of family and new life. A refreshing view amid modern stories of utter hopelessness!

I absolutely love this amazing series. The beautiful stories told by Nurse Jenny Lee are so amazing to see on TV and full of great history lessons through the eyes of an experienced midwife. It's also great to read a perspective of a midwife- a seldom told story.

Excellent true story that reflected a true and interesting period of the British national health services and the way women had their babies and the marvellous work done by the midwife during that time.

After devouring the entire BBC Call the Midwife series, I was in two minds about reading the stories. However, I found this collection only added to my enjoyment of the series, as one gains so much more information about the midwives themselves, their relationships, and the reality of the times in which they lived, worked and loved.

A gem, truly.

Calll the Midwife Stories are a wonderful insight into the lives of the midwives and the nuns and how hard they worked, but the stories of the people in the east end are unbeleivabley hard and by todays standards very enlightening

I decided to order this trilogy after watching Call the Midwife on PBS. I was not disappointed; the books are quick reads and have more detail than the PBS series. I have since ordered a fourth book by Jennifer Worth titled In the Midst of Life.

Thouroughly enjoying the book and the series. The women are learning new skills & having new experiences all the time. There is so much that goes into being a midwife. It is enjoyable to read about their experiences.

Wonderful memories of my nursing training in the early 60's, and midwifery in the days where pregnancy was not regarded as an illness but merely a part of life. How lucky we are to live in such times of plenty, some of the conditions people lived in would break your heart.

After reading Call the Midwife, I had to read more of these amazing stories. Even though the set I purchased came from the UK, it arrived very quickly. The books were in pristine condition. Book 2 and 3 were even better than the first one. Glad I decided to get the set.

Initially curious after watching the PBS mini-series, I was completely hooked from the first anecdote in the first book of the trilogy. Focussed more on the people of Poplar than the mini-series, each individual story was extremely moving, at times shocking and tragic, but also showing how stubborn and resilient people can be under incredibly harsh and hopeless conditions. The books also allow scope to provide more general discussion and history of such economic and health conditions. I found I could not take a break between each book but had to dive into the next one immediately. These are stories that will stay with you.

Thoroughly enjoying this. All new subject and history for me. Love the stories, especially those about the early life of the characters and of course the midwives experiences. These books are extremely illuminating. I am recommending this book to many of my friends

This series is so informative about medial practices in the era following World War II in England. Jennifer Worth was no doubt a wonderful nurse, but also a terrific writer. Her straight forward approach is refreshing. I would recommend this series to anyone.
