I enjoyed reading this book. The story flowed nicely. I would get so caught up in the action, I was glad when the character had to rest so I could too..I would have given this story 5 stars if Mr. Lundy had just been a little more descriptive of his characters. All I knew about Jacob was that he may have been a little over weight.

I bought this thinking it would be another "Zombie-takes-over-the-world" book and was very much surprised with the whole premise of this series. This author wrote a very entertaining book that deals with the end of the world, but not like how you think it will end. This book is a first in three and it deals with Jacob Anderson, just an everyday regular guy trying to survive a world falling apart and keeping his family safe. The majority of this book focuses on Jacob and his rescuers trying to get out of the city of Chicago and being chased constantly by "The Darkness" - former humans who have been turned into - well you will just have to buy all three books in the series to find out the answer to that. I'm not giving away any spoilers here. The author is a veteran and you can tell because he really knows his stuff when it comes to military matters, but he does not lay it on thick so if you are a non veteran you will be able to follow what is going on. If you are looking for a twist on the "zombie" type of books then you should buy this and read it because it is a page turner.

This was one of the best apocalyptic books I have ever read. I can't wait until The Shadows is on the market. W.J. Lundy was able to hold my attention with his characters. Jacob evolved from a wimpy, young fellow into a reluctant Rambo in this book. I can't wait to see how much more he will evolve in he next edition.
Unsouled (Cradle) (Volume 1) :: The Remastered Edition (The Sword of Light Book 1) :: Burning Tower: Benjamin Ashwood Book 5 :: House of Blades (The Traveler's Gate Trilogy) (Volume 1) :: Divided We Fall (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Book 6)

It started out slow. I put it down several times, almost deciding to stop reading. I'm glad I kept reading though. The second half of the book really picked up and kept my interest. And even though I had a hard time relating to the main character the action and story was the saving grace. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Read this in one sitting! Couldn't stop until the end and knew the family was reunited. Liked that the characters were real...no big instantaneous heros...real fear, trauma, conflicted decisions. Can't wait for the upcoming sequel and how we survive (??) the Darkness!! Thanks W. J. Lundy for your novel....and your military service.

I found this book enjoyable. There were a few typographic errors here and there, but overall they do not detract from the story. The fast pace draws the reader in and the storyline sets up nicely for a sequel. I cant wait to read the follow up.

Similar to a day by day Armageddon with more badass Zombies. The story certainly lacks some character development and information but for a short story that is not a series it's a decent read. WJs other books i.e. whiskey tango foxtrot are much better in my opinion.

Good book that was destroyed by the character Jacob.
Throughout the book he nagged only about having to find his wife and daughter.
That other people had also lost loved ones were completely uninteresting to him,
and apparently he had not learned that the lower you talk, the less likely it is that someone can hear you (enemy).
I understand that the author wanted a weaker main character in this book compared to his previous series, but to go from from well-trained soldiers to a complete egocentric idiot was to much!
Will buy the sequel!
