A wonderful story full of unforgettable characters and surprising twists. Rilla, the heroine is left a fortune but must marry in order to keep it. The man she loves is unattainable, so she faces a loveless marriage or losing everything. Throw into the mix a scheming future mother-in-law, a ruthless half brother, a shady lineage she knows nothing about and loyal friends who will do anything to save her from ruin and surprises come thick and fast. This delightful story is told with humor and an appreciation for the past.

Highly recommend this book when you feel like enjoying an easy story line to follow. A feel good romantic book, entertaining characters. Old Western setting, old southern money. The gentleman and the bad boys.

I really enjoyed this book. Great characters who are dealing with a lot of life's ups and downs. Rilla was sent to France by her parents when she was only 10. Now she has finished school and is a trained and qualified governess. She is finally coming home and can't wait to confront her parents for her exile. My favorite scene is when the main character Rilla , her friend Jewel and Mr. Pigeuron try their hand at acting. Great love story and a reminder of when times were really hard for children born out of wedlock. I'd like to see more of Rilla and Cal and how their life changes.

Cal and Rilla really make this story sparkle. At times it was hilarious, such as the scene where they were trying to get Cal to offer marriage. Rilla's determination to make something good out of the ashes of her life was a testament to her giving heart. Thank you very much for a wonderful story, Danny Scott.

I received this book free through BookBub. Rilla returns from being educated in Paris to find that her parent died a few days before, and the lawyer explains that she is illegitimate and that her wealthy father left her a home and a gold mine in California, but she has to marry within one year or lost her inheritance. She travels to see her new home and starts a young women's finishing school. There are plenty of twists, turns, and surprises. This book will keep you reading just another page or two and before you know it you have finished the book.

Put together a Pinkerton man, who is also independently wealthy, with an illegitimate young lady from Boston who was educated in France, and you have the basis of a lovely romantic tale. This is an easy read, curled up on a chilly afternoon in front of a blazing fire.

I enjoyed listening to this clean listen by Sandra Sinclair. This is a standalone listen and the beginning of a series. The author has a smooth writing style and wrote interesting characters. I liked the twists and turns in this historical western romance. I am glad times have changed in terms of how women now have rights and in regards to how children out of wedlock are treated. I thought that C.J. McAllister did a great performance with the various characters. I liked both Rilla and Cal. I was provided with this review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily written this review. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it.
