Brian Rathbone is a excellent writer. He brings to life characters on a world that is also his creation. Part Sci-Fi, part fantasy and 100% action pacted adventure, this book was very enjoyable and well done. I will continue to read everything Mr. Rathbone writes as he had never disappointed me as his story develops.

I found this series by searching for free ebooks, I ultimately went with them because of so many raving reviews and not really reading the negative ones. Honestly, I think most people don't understand what makes great literature.
As an avid reader I must say I am rather disappointed by Rathbone's inability to truly flesh out a character. Catrine is no further able to make heads or tales of her abilities at the end of book two as she was when she learned of them in the beginning of book one. There are references to how she has changed but no real evidence of it.
I also have an issue with how Rathbone has an epilogue in book one about Catrine's father and he is mentioned again in book two's prologue but nothing further. If he isn't going to go back to him and flesh his character and situation out, then he should have just left Wendell alone after choosing his town over his daughter. Rathbone has several characters going along and then divides them but really only follows Catrine. I'm not opposed to the story being focused on her, she is the main character after all, but he does not go back to the other characters near as often as necessary. Especially Nat, Rathbone only goes back to his character maybe three times after he parts ways with Cat's group and when you go back to his character you're left wondering "why?" it does nothing to further the story in book two. I only hope it has something to do with book three (I obviously haven't read it yet).
Overall, I think Rathbone over simplifies where there should be more and adds too much detail when there should be less. His writing reminds me more of high school quality, but the story is good and I fully intend to finish the trilogy.

I enjoyed this book although it had many flaws. I found myself hopelessly bored through much of this novel but the knowledge of an exciting conclusion kept me diligent enough to complete it and I was happy with the ending... I look forward to reading Dragon Ore.

My curiosity was piqued in the first book and the author created characters that I could care about and I wanted to know what happened to them. I was so dissapointed to have Catrin's father, who showed promise as a brave, trustworthy man planning to set out to find his daughter in the first book, become a sniveling, spineless excuse for a father who stays in the cold caves and is stabbed. We don't know if he's alive or dead because that's all we heard about him in book two.
There are a lot of extraneous characters that the author develops to the point you believe they will appear later in the book or at least do something important that you'll hear about later. I guess all of it will happen in the third book because there's no indication of it so far.
Then after Catrin has her out of body experience in the monks' stronghold she is supposedly so weak she can barely sit up. However, after only having a few sips of water she feels she is able to walk a long distance to the maze and locate a long, lost room full of goodies. Now, that MIGHT be believable but then she runs back to the main halls to learn there has been an attack, runs out to the plateu and witness another death and then immediately leaves on a long and arduous journey through the mines and a forest which they must flee through in order to escape certain death. At least the author could have said she sipped water charged with Istra's power or something to make all this energy believable!
The main character also has unexpected mood swings throughout the book that don't fit her character and becomes really annoying. The author should have spent more time developing the character to explain this or give some other reason for this uncharacteristic behavior such as outside forces. I will go ahead and read book three but I really don't hold out much hope that it will get better.
