As a primal and paleo disciple, gut health has always been one of those things on my radar that I would get to "one day".

I picked up this book from a friend's recommendation and was really pleased with what I found. This seems likely a very nice flexible approach to allow people to eat the foods they enjoy most yet heal their various gut issues. It does not try to pretend to be a paleo book, it is strictly a gut health book and it is a great book on the subject.

The author clearly has abundant professional experience in gut micro flora and that is what really makes this book pay off. I now "get" SIBO, GERD, etc... and it's now patently obvious why doctors recommending high fiber diets seem to only make things worse for people with these conditions. I now understand why jasmine rice is easy for me to digest, yet basmati rice always gives me heart burn hours later...

The author even provides a tested formula to determine the gut disrupting potential of nearly any food.

For those that wish to modify their paleo diet to address GERD, IBS and other gut issues, this would be a great read although not meant to be a paleo book at all but a specific diet for a specific medical outcome as it does allow some grains, etc... For its intended purpose this diet is likely to provide so much releif.

I now understand the real triggers of my own occasional flare ups and know now how to avoid them.

Great value and a nice gut education 101 package, diet, recipes, meal plan etc...

If you suffer from gut issues and or IBS or GERD this is the book to buy.

I bought both books because I had symptoms of both GERD & IBS due to a couple of episodes of food borne illness. I followed the SIBO diet for 6 weeks. My digestion has healed. I still follow the SIBO diet although not as strictly.

Robillard is a microbiologist w/ GERD. His writing is easy to understand although I glanced thru the sections on the molecular composition of sugars. His research is thorough. He even lists all of the current GERD/IBS diets and goes thru their pros & cons. He has good relations w/ their authors.

There is a handy index in the back listing foods and their fermentation value. This list is not comprehensive & he gives you the formula he used although I did not use it. I basically stuck to his SIBO diet.

His SIBO diet is heavy on meat and dairy. It is high fat. If you are lactose intolerant like me you can switch out the cows milk. However I ended up losing weight because of the reduction in carbs from sugar, breads, pastas and potatoes.

The author does a great job explaining how small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) contributes to heartburn and GERD and what foods you should avoid/limit to help improve your digestive health. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has issues with GERD and SIBO.

This book deals with Dr. Robillard's original research, and he painstakingly lays it all out for us. If you have any kind of digestive ailment (no matter how serious, including diabetes IBS, celiac disease, etc.), this book is for you.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is suffering with digestive issues and acid reflux. The book is highly informative and very thorough in topics. It discusses the digestion process from start to finish. It compares a healthy person's digestive system vs a person with digestion issues. It explains different digestive conditions. But my favorite part is the chapter on different diets that were created for people with digestive issues. It explains the diet, and the pros and cons of it. I've been doctoring for 15 years regarding a gastroparesis diagnosis. The problem is that doctors have no nutritional training or at least didn't share it with me. I was given a list of foods by a dietician, but over two thirds of the foods on the list I was intolerant to. This book also addresses that and solves the issues. This is a must -read if you have digestive issues and have no idea what to eat or where to start.

I was having problems with acid reflux and wanted to get off my medications. I had read a lot about Fast Track Digestion and how it had helped people. I decided to buy a copy. The book helps those with acid reflux, LPR, and other digestive problems. I followed the advice given for my diet. After I read the book, I tried out some of the recipes and they are really good. I called the Digestive Health Institute one evening to leave a message for a consultation. I was surprised that the author of Fast Tract Digestion, Dr. Norman Roubillard, answered the phone. He was very friendly and didn't seem bothered by me. He even spent some time talking to me even though he was not being paid for a consultation. I immediately realized that he is a caring and dedicated man who really wants to help people cure their problems so they will not have to take prescriptions with dangerous side effects. I did book a consultation with Dr. Roubillard. I'm happy to say that I am off my meds!

I was diagnosed in 2017 with acid reflux. My symptoms were a loss of voice and the sensation of a small tadpole swimming in my throat. I was told by my doctor to wait three hours after dinner to go to bed, to sleep with my head raised, and to avoid spicy foods. That made no sense to me: something else had to be going on. I read "Fast Tract Digestion" and began to eliminate foods, among them multi-grain bread, sweet potatoes, bananas, dried apricots, legumes, and corn, at least one of which I'd been eating daily. I learned about FP (fermentation potential) and wondered why the concept isn't more widely talked about. It's so simple! Don't eat starchy foods that hang around in your digestive system. You'll develop SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and eventually possibly esophageal cancer. My voice came back within a week of making changes, and the tadpole has disappeared. The list of foods you CAN eat is long, and while the recipes are loosely written, they're easy to follow if you know anything about cooking. Thank you, Norm Robillard, for making this your life's work, and for gathering so much information in one small book..

I believe that Mr. Robillard's theory of the fermentation potential of foods being the root cause of acid reflux is just that--a theory. His theory was tested in a small clinical trial of only 19 patients. I sincerely believe some of his food advice could be detrimental (i.e. consumption of high fat foods) to reflux sufferers, so buyer beware.

If you are a sufferer, I'd like to recommend "The Acid Watchers Diet" by Dr. Jonathan Aviv for another view on the subject. The book outlines a more comprehensive approach based on Dr. Aviv's ENT practice with thousands of patients.

Went low carb (between 25 and 50 grams of carbs / day). My acid reflux is gone and I lost 12 pounds in a month. I feel great and I have lost my cravings for milkshakes, cake, donuts, etc. I think this is the beginning of a diet lifestyle change.

I have suffered from heartburn for years. This book gave me some sensible and practical recommendations about how to deal with this without prescriptions or OTC meds. The science that backs up the recommendations is great and for the first time in a long time I am heartburn free. Highly recommend this book.

The book provides intruiging justification of the proposed diet, which suppposedly aleviates GERD. I have yet to see long term effect but it seems to be effective in the short run. It explains why trigger food cause reflux, and it has nothing to do with prevalent understanding....

Excellent book and makes so much sense. Not too" technically obscure in talk" so a layperson can make good sense of it. I am so glad I bought it and read it. Thank you for making it available. A very good read.

Thanks to Fast Tract Digestion diet and the consultative help of Norm Robillard via the Digestive Health Institute, I am now off meds, taking just an occasional TUMS. I feel better than I have since being diagnosed with GERD nearly two years ago. I expect that I will always need to be careful about what I eat, but it is a graded system that enables me to try gradual adjustments.

Anybody suffering from heartburn and GERD should seriously consider reading this book! Information in this book literally saved my poor esophagus, throat and my sanity:-) All three have been under constant assault from stomach acid for a long time and I was starting to lose hope.
I have tried veggie juicing, PPI, candida diet and low carb diet with partial or no success. Without knowing the reason why acid reflux was happening I could not figure out what to do. I stumbled upon Dr.Robillard's book and found such great insights into the causes and solutions of GERD. The science behind it is so fascinating and Dr Robillard made it so understandable and fun to read, I could not put the book down. His approach worked from day 1. I have been on his diet for 4 days now without an incident of heartburn. This has not happened before! It is nothing short of a miracle. I am deeply grateful to him for giving me hope and knowledge on this matter!!

Norm Robillard expands on his theories about acid reflux and GERD, and how carbohydrates can be the leading cause for some people. One of the best parts of this book, though, are the lists, day-by-day eating guide, and wonderful and practical recipes in the back of the book. A must have for anyone with acid reflux/GERD.

Cruising the internet one night when my digestion was horribly out of whack, I came across this slim volume but fact-packed primer course in how the body metabolizes carbohydrates and sugars by Norm Robillard, a dedicated digestive researcher. I downloaded his book, read it avidly, contacted him with a few questions, and he was gracious enough to answer immediately. I've recommended this savvy book to my primary doctor and another internist. Buy it if you have GERD, SIBO or IBS. MUST reading, with a diet that will help.

Tried FODMAP diet, Gaps, SCD, very low carb, and Paleo. All helped, to a point. This plan seems to be that missing link. Robillard's diet is completely compatible with Paleo. The small red potatoes (Pontiac) and jasmine rice (Jaminet's safe starches) alleviate that horrible feeling of deprivation. Only been doing this for a week...cramp free, reflux free, normal bowels. Highly recommended.

This book assumes everyone needs the same amount of calories - a 150cm high accountant and a 190cm 100kg firefighter or a 120kg bodybuilder all have the same dietary requirements.. yeah, right.

If you follow this method most of your calories will have to come from fat. 150g -200g of protein is max if you don't want to destroy your kidneys, about 50-70g of carbs is max in this diet which leaves you with a couple of thousands of calories that are supposed to be filled with calories from fats... I don't eat dairy (eg. cheese - because of intolerance) and I don't eat fatty meats because they're absolutely disgusting so I generally had to drink glasses of different kinds of oils and ended up feeling sick for a couple of days.

The author ignores a stress connection with GERD which is well documented in science (search Google Scholar). Focusing only on diet is a dead end. It just treats the symptoms, it's like a quick fix, but the underlying causes remain. The author implies that carbs malabsorbtion is the cause of GERD. Alright, so why do many people eat the same carbs as GERD sufferers, take the same antibiotics, eat the same toxic tuna and drink from the same toxic plastic bottles etc. and they don't get GERD? Why does only a minority of people on the same diet get heartburn? It's clear that there must be some other factors that make a certain group of people GET carbs malabsorbtion, while others DON'T GET carbs malabsorbtion on the same diet. Therefore not digesting some foods must be just a symptom, not a cause. Why not write a book about healing GERD's real causes instead???

Everyone with GERD should have access to the information in this book. The book is not written as well as it could be, which is why I couldn't give it 5 stars-- some parts you have to read several times to figure out what he's trying to say, and there's a lot of expository information that, imo, is not necessary. But after sharing the core recommendations with a friend with GERD, I think Dr. Robillard is on the right track with his recommendations. No drugs, just taking control of your own health through diet. Great stuff.

For those who have tried other heartburn/reflux solutions and haven't had success, it's worth knowing about this other view not normally accepted by the medical profession. Nice charts in the back that show foods to eat and those to avoid. This hasn't totally worked for me, but did work for a friend. Everyone is different.

This book is super good and would recommend it to anyone struggling with heart burn and digestive issues. I am still recovering from gastritis and related heart burn after suffering for many years. By following FP guidelines, it has helped to clear gas that used to build up in my tummy. I am completely free from gas and the pain i used to have in the lower abdomen i suppose due to continuous build of gas.

I still maintain the diet and have had a relief with my heart burn as well. I believe with time all symptoms will clear. Of course you may need more supplementaion with probiotics and things like zinc carnosine in my case to heal the gastristus.

Good luck

Often, when I see these "miracle books" for health conditions, I roll my eyes and keep on going. I like hard science with regards to curing ailments of the human body. I was intrigued by the book and purchased. The author has an interesting hypothesis about the causes of most heartburn problems and he explains that hypothesis in the first half of the book. He then lays out a diet plan based on that hypothesis.

Long story short, I started to have reduced symptoms within 48 hours and now weeks out, I have very few flareups anymore. I was on quite a bit of meds but I've been able to reduce those considerably as well. I feel that I am on the road to healing and that is a great thing.

I think that this book is something that you should try if you suffer from consistent heartburn. I think it gets at the root causes of the disease. This diet, plus your physician's counsel, should have you on the road to recovery fairly quickly.

A Gerd sufferer for many months, I tried at first the usual antacid medicines, but they did not really work and had deplorable side effects. Thereafter I consulted Dr. Jonathan Wright's book on acid replacement, but the results were only slight. This book, however, proved far more successful for me. Dr. Robillard himself once had Gerd, and his recommendations are supported by experimental research, some of it done by himself.

His work lays out the theory that microbial fermentation in the small intestine produces gas, which pushes open the lower esophageal sphincter, resulting in symptoms. He recommends a low carbohydrate diet in Heartburn Cured, and refines his theory in this excellent book by singling out which kinds of carbs have the highest and lowest fermentation potentials.

His earlier book in its title touts a "cure," but after a month on this diet, even in its refined version, there are some days when the symptoms inexplicably return. There's no way to pinpoint exact reasons and causes for this, and one's best approach is to try this or that food, and see if they might be contributing. (For a slightly different theory, combining Wright and Robillard, see chriskresser.com). Ideally, doctors in the future will simply put patients on a low carb diet rather than on drugs.

This was interesting and informative . I will definitely give the diet a whirl to see if it does clear up my issues. The book was a little more technical than I personally wanted to read. I would rather it just given a more abbreviated explanation of the diet and then gotten to the actual plan. Additionally, I would have liked to have the calories listed as I want to use that info as part of my diet selection. Am interested in possibly downloading the app because I certainly don't want to be referring to my kindle or hard copy to decide and track throughout the day.

This diet works wonders. Although nothing is a magic bullet and you must tailor this diet for your needs, Dr. Robillard's approach is sound.
Some here complained about the recipes in the back of the book; these are just suggestions, the diet is very easily to work around your own needs.

I have silent reflux. This book is very technical--not really easy or pleasant to read. Also, I don't think the theory in the book is complete because I get reflux from things that the author says should not cause it. It is possible there are different causes for re flux and maybe this book address one cause but I think the author is too narrow in his view. I returned the book.

Enjoyed this book - gave me tremendous insight as to why I have reflux and how to cure it.
Just wish there was a bigger section on the recommended menus - especially for the 1st week.
This book has helped me a lot.

As a frequent heartburn sufferer, I was very interested to read this book and see what advice I could find. I tire of using expensive over-the-counter remedies and was hoping to find some alternate treatments. I thought this book was pretty useful and contained a lot of good information. The guides in this book offer you a glance at what foods will ferment in your system and which will not be as likely to. The beginning of the book is pretty straight forward and describes some of the common causes for heartburn and acid reflux and what you can do to treat this disorder. I might have liked to have seen a coupe more text chapters and a bit of a closing chapter at the end of this book, but for what it is intended for, I found it useful.

The premise of this book is that heartburn is caused by gas produced in the small intestine by harmful bacteria that thrive on carbohydrate that is difficult to digest. For this reason he recommends avoiding whole grains, and fiber. Foods with the highest glycemic index (white bread, and table sugar) are easiest to digest, so most of your daily carbohydrate should come from such foods.

This is very bad advice, and it is not sustainable. Simple carbohydrates can lead to candida, not to mention diabetes.

He belittles probiotics and fiber, but in fact, a healthy diet should include both. A more effective long-term solution is to eliminate the harmful bacteria by using biofilm agents and kill agents to get rid of them, and using probiotics and soluble fiber to feed the beneficial bacteria that should replace them.

See "The Gut Health Protocol" by John Herron for better guidance.
