Despite my initial skepticism, I really liked The 5:2 Fast Diet for Beginners. Its premise makes sense to me – that fasting occasionally helps you to reset your internal clock. I was surprised that you could eat your normal calorie intake on the non-fasting days and that the fasting days themselves give you 500 calories. I’m making a grocery list because the recipes look great and I’ve recently been struggling with lower calorie recipe ideas – I’m in kind of a rut, truth be told. Since it’s the height of the crazy holiday season, I won’t be starting the 5:2 schedule before New Year’s, but this plan could be just the ticket come January 1!

This is an interesting diet plan. Basically, on 2 of every 7 days, you consume only 500-600 calories. There is a lot of info about how to make this diet work right for your schedule, so you don’t have to make following it the main thing that you are doing in life. It has some good recipes in it for the fasting days. A lot chicken, fish, shrimp, pasta. There is a 50-calorie snack list that you can refer to. The suggestions are a lot of things that you would expect, like fruit or hummus, but it’s helpful to be able to quickly check exact amounts.

Exercise is part of the plan too, and the book explains interval training to get faster results. You are not supposed to exercise on your fast days. The book stresses that you need to understand how your body adapts; nothing is one-size-fits-all. But there are some good suggestions about how to set yourself up for success.

Mostly recipes. I would think most people following the 5:2 diet follow it solo yet the recipes serve 2 or 4. The book contains a quick synopsis about the 5:2 diet - additional info can be found on the web for free.

For me, 5 : 2 Fast Diet for Beginners was questionable from the start. Fasting for religious purposes is one thing, but fasting in order to diet and lose weight is questionable, even if they claim it can be healthy.
In the introduction the authors explain the benefits of fasting by discussing changes in hormones that will bring about weight loss. But other diets have been successful that involved no fasting at all. That said, the recipes looked delicious and well balanced. A personal favorite that caught my attention and joined my collection was the hearty shrimp and kale soup, a savory choice with a vegetable stock base. The recipe introductions in italics do well to excite you for the cooking ventures.

Calling all of those who may have eating habits that include a lot of processed, fast food and empty calories, who have food addictions or who are looking for a simple and easy to use diet plan, The 5:2 Fast Diet for Beginners, could be the answer to your problems.

The mission of the authors is all about feeling good and learning to eat in a healthy and sustainable way to improve your health and quality of life. Fasting has been shown to shed fat, lower cholesterol, and regulate hunger hormones in addition to much more. The idea behind the 5:2 Diet is different from other fasting diets in that it requires shorter fasting periods and recommends eating healthier on non-fasting days in order to maintain better health all around and not only when fasting. The simplicity of it makes it easier to maintain, too, without the need to count calories every day and prepare special meals.

The book offers a bunch of great recipes, including calorie information along with tips to keep your energy up and stay motivated throughout the week. The perfect way to jumpstart your new lifestyle and feel great!

I've read other books on this subject and despite the information given I wanted more specifics. When to eat and /or fast (for how many hours), what days are best to fast, do men need to eat all 600 calories, etc.

Diets that have real potential to make a difference in people's lives typically have three elements: sustainability (can I do this forever?), health (is this diet good for my body in the long term?) and quality of life (does this diet make me feel better or worse?). The 52 Fast Diet for Beginners, another great book by Rockbridge Press, addresses each one of these elements in detail. The book has a long-term strategy and diet plan, a copious list of acceptable foods and recipes, insightful motivation tips, and sound educational material on nutrition and wellness. This book has all the tools to guide people comfortably through a weight loss journey and reclaim control over their body. I strongly recommend this book to people looking to lose body fat and improve their long-term health.
