Very useful indeed ! It also features an introduction to the blues. The organisation is both clear and suitable for consultation and learning progression. I wish the book had been more colorful even if it would have been more expensive.

Excellent book for serious guitarists that need to understand and incorporate music theory into their playing. Starts from the basics and builds quickly to a high theoretical standard. Its all you need to be great, provided you have the talent...

Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask (Guitar Method) is a great book! Answered all the questions I have thus far. I know there will be more but an awesome start to answering these questions. GREAT BOOK!!!

This reference book does not have many pages, but it does have a huge amount of information. This information is presented in a logical sequence, and I found it easy to read. Be aware that, just as with any guitar theory book, actually LEARNING the contents and being able to use what you learn in your playing will take you months if not years.

Very useful!!!! I'm able to flip through and pick out things I want to learn. It explains why things are, then gives you the tab to learn from. If you are stuck in that "in between" spot, try this. It made me realize that it's not the gear that makes the player, it's the player that makes the gear!

This book is must-have for developing guitarists. Kolb walks through everything starting with basic fretboard layout and tuning and makes music theory approachable for guitarists at any level! Highly Recommended.

This book is very tightly written and skimming is not an option. The lack of extraneous text should not take away from its content. The theory is presented in a straight forward and comprehensive way each section building on the last. So, if you don't get it jumping ahead is not going to help. I am sure that it really does lend itself as a supplement to any guitar method because the material is universal. It has helped me encapsulate what I have learned in class in one written place.

This is one of those books where the first chapter is really simple. But then, all of a sudden, you're in deep water, drowning in a sea of technical musical terms and theories. I can't recommend it.

does exactly what its intended to do: teaches you how to put sheet music and guitar together, plus more. teaches you how to build scales, chords, etc. has ear training exercises. This book will really help develop you into a REAL guitarist.

This book really improves your playing if you take it seriously and sit down and put the hours into it. There are some, I feel, superflous ideas in there, but it is all crystal clear and well-explained and user-friendly and full of great information. It is also very well laid out and planned.

Simply the best. A very effective tool for both learning and teaching music. In one hundred pages the author covers all basics in music theory(and does it in a very educative and friendly form)and even touches some more complex concepts like chord substitution, superimposing and more. A "must have" for every guitarist who wants to be confident about his theoretical knowledge and even expand it. I wish i had this book before. Highly recommended.

Great book for anyone trying to take their playing to the next level. If you are trying to get into jazz, fusion, arpeggios, etc, it is inevitable to get into some theory but this is the best way of learning that theory that I can think of. Awesome book.

This is truly a remarkable book. It covers a wide range of areas important to any musicial regardless of their instrument. I brought it obviously to improve my skill on the guitar, but I've learned so much more with regard to the theory behind music.
As a musician and student with Music as my Major in college, one of the most important chapters in the book for me was chapter# 4 (Intervals). I struggled with intervals constantly. But now I am becomming much better at identifying them. I had not seem this thing called "interval shapes" which is in chapter 4, and was not aware that being able to identify shapes would allow me to achieve the interval I was looking for. There is so much more to this book that I will tell you if you're a serious musician or even if you're not, this is the book for you; hands down!

Notice that in all positive reviews the reviewer has had some kind of prior music experience whether it be playing in band or orchestra in high school or whatever.
If you, like myself, have no prior musical experience, or you're a guitar player that has been getting by on the pentatonic scale and few others, some chords and learning from tabulature, this book might as well be written in Greek. Terminology is used with no glossary. The book begins with the equivalent of simple addition and goes to calculus by page 5 if you're inexperienced.
Like prior reviewers mentioned, this is really a reference book for people that have already learned these concepts on another instrument.
Not for beginners.

I bought this book mainly because all the glowing reviews. I have several other "music theory" books already, and while I've gained *some* practical advice, what ALL of these books have in common is one MAJOR thing; any frame of reference explaining how, where, and/or why you would apply something. I would compare buying this book to buying a calculus text book and expecting to "learn all the mysteries of Calculus by simply reading this book." Yes, this book does have facts and you can learn from it. I learned a couple things. But for me, not quite a moron, I find these "every thing you need to know about _____" misleading and a waste of money. If you don't know how to extract or apply the information given, it's pretty much USELESS. However, to be fair, if you already know about music theory and want a reference book to check your facts, this would be good.
