this is a good book for beginners. Some tricks are explained and techniques unveiled. The point is that anyone who means to purchase a good dslr or film camera and spend some hundreds for that should already be aware of what is written in the book. It has been written with passion and I totally appreciated the effort by the pros who took their time to develop this guide.

From the beginning image of the symbiotic giraffe and rhino (one sees well, the other hears well) as a metaphor for shutter speed and lens aperture, this book will unwrap the mystery of great photography for you in easy to understand terms. I recommend it wholeheartedly!

I love the way Dan uses "keys" to explain photography. There are so many great tips for so many different situations, you can't help but learn something important from this book. It has animal, portrait, landscape tips as well as equipment and creativity issues.

Once again, Dan has presented us with another great photography book! I've come to rely on these books for informative and easy to understand instructions to help me learn to use my digital camera. He also has many good suggestions for posing, subjects, etc.

Fantastic book for beginners, and a very good book for experienced photographers. I have been shooting for a number of years, and still I was able to pull a lot of really good information from this book. Not only that, but he writes in a way that is easily understandable for newbies, and yet not condescending to those who may have more experience (not easy to do, by the way). No matter your level of photo experience, this is definitely worth a read!

This book is easy to read (for the everyday person) and to understand (lay terms). It covers the basics, and ten gives insight into a great deal of photo opportunities that we all have missed (or at least me), because we didn't have the correct settings. A must have!

Great book with easy to understand information. Gave me some great ideas on what to put on my wish list for my next camera accessory purchases also. Recommended for anyone who wants to take better photos.

This book was easy to understand, practical, and best of all -- free! I'll definitely put these ideas into good use. The author seemed very knowledgable and experienced. It is so kind of him to share these tips. I'll have to read more of his books!!

I am slowly turning pro in photography and this book, and Dan's others are helping me a lot. I have never had a good camera until now but have been able to get some great pix. With the help of this book I can build a solid foundation of understanding of the function of my camera and techniques to consistently get "wow" pix. I am also glad that Dan uses entertaining stories and humor to keep the reading light. I am looking forward to tearing into the next books.

The tips in this book are valuable. They are all "common sense" to experienced photographers and "total mystery" to everyone else. The tips are actually a compendium of daily tips made into a book - with that in mind, it would have been much better if they had been edited out of daily tip format. In several places the tip begins "Today's tip is..." Also, "get the camera off automatic", while important, is repeated in every one of the first ten tips. It does need to be repeated, but this is the equivalent of saying it ten times in ten minutes. Very annoying.

There are punctuation errors and wrong word usages (their/there) that should have been corrected. The biggest flaw with this book lies in the use of the over-pixilated key photo and the poor quality of the cover photo. The example photos inside are high res and translate very well. The blurry cover and heavily artifacted key are likely to make people think the tips aren't going to be of use. They are. The information is very good and applying the tips will improve your photography.

Being a newbie to concentrated photography information, my hunger for knowledge is insatiatable. That being said...this guide contains lots of tips that are easily practiced and, hopefully, will improve my photography skills as applied. Good book for beginners...
