Well designed narrative, gripping in many parts but without ever getting very emotional. In that sense I found it more than a bit unbelievable that all these young people could act out all of these bloodthirsty acts in such an unemotional way.

Alex Berenson is doing an excellent job of developing John Wells and taking him out of the usual Afghanistan conflict and into a different part of the world that has it's own problems. His descriptions of the locations are just enough to keep and not bore you with too much detail. The plot is interesting and not overly complicated. This is a must read for any Wells fan..

I enjoyed the combination of current events and the action of John Wells but it seemed as if the author in understanding that he had an appealing character just went throught the motions to create a new situation to put him into.
The Island of Dr. Moreau (Signet Classics) :: Twelve Days (John Wells Series Book 9) :: The Ghost War (John Wells Series Book 2) :: The Counterfeit Agent (John Wells Series Book 8) :: The Secret Soldier (John Wells Series Book 5)

Really up to date; the denouement involves a drone called in via cell phone by John Wells. However John Wells himself is not up to date, still killing people and taking absurd chances. However it was fun reading.

Takes us deep inside the world of Somali gangsters, which is hard to fathom since the storyteller is a Westerner. Our Hero becomes uncomfortably less lovable as time and his sordid livelihood takes the inevitable toll on his psyche. satisfying yet unpredictable ending.

I have read each and every book Alex Berenson has written. I find them extremely well written and riveting. The books give me insight into today's world of counter terrorism without any of the sermonizing of many current authors. To me they are the literary equivalent to Homeland. I think his books are masterful and look forward to the next....

Alex Berenson writes another great story in the John Wells saga. The book was finished in two days, I couldn't put it down. The only reason I wouldn't give the story five stars is the ending seems a little abrupt and leave a couple questions unanswered which I don't see being answered in the next novel. However, it's not a big enough deal to not like the story and they don't really pertain to any of the main characters that will remain in the future novels. Other than that, Berenson put together another great story.

I stumbled into the John Wells series by accidentally reading the second book in the series first. I immediately read The Faithful Spy and have been hooked ever since. Love the character of John Wells. He's a decent guy without being perfect. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves spy/action novels.

This was not my favorite book. I never read anything by this author; was anxious to try. For some reason the story did not click for me. It seemed to start slow, and I actually became bored. Sorry! I wanted to like it; just not for me.

The plot is simple and straightforward, however one gets the feeling that the level of twists in the plot could be much better. The overall delivery of the story ends up being too linear and previsible to be a great book. Overall not bad but also not great!

and Berenson is still the best thriller writer out there. I hope more people catch on so Mr. Berenson will continue the character and series for a long time.
Why is Wells the best? He's somehow larger than life while remaining true to life - physically and mentally sharp, yet a real human being. He's not as over the top superman as many of the other thriller series characters, yet he is every bit as compelling, and more.
And why is Berenson the best? Partly because Wells is the best, and partly just that his writing flows almost effortlessly. Reading his books is like watching a great athlete - you get the feeling that it's entirely natural, yet you know hours and hours of blood sweat and tears went into making it great.

Berenson's main character isn't quite as developed as in previous works, but still an interesting nd different hero. A Muslim (converted) former/current CIA operative with an interesting back-up/support guy, he's in Africa to rescue aid-worker students as a favor to his son (from whom he's estranged).
Strong points: slow development of insights on hero, thinking processes of the hero. Operational skills of hero.

Started a little slower than some of his other works, but it was worth staying with it, as everything came together nicely. The title seemed to be a bit off, however. Usually the title fits the story like a glove...this was a bit more like a mitten.

I read all the John Wells / Alex Berenson books and like every one. This one has a compelling story line that keeps it moving. John Wells is his usual focused self, just wish he'd had a larger role in the book. Great ending, in fact the last 25% of the book made the book.
