I'm totally impressed by the research that went into A Refuge Assured. It is a captivating tale that takes its readers back to France in 1792 during the Revolution. Some people had to flee the country to save their life and lace maker, Vivienne Rivard, is one. Once landing in America Vivienne's life is anything but easy. Will she be able to find safety? What about others that she encounters?

The characters in this story are extremely realistic. Most are quite likeable and I really felt a connection with several. I intentionally read this novel slowly to savor the book longer, but also because I knew I wouldn't want to say goodbye to Vivienne, Liam, Jethro, Finn or Henry.

I loved how well written this novel was and how there were unexpected twists and turns throughout. The author is truly blessed with a creative, God given, talent for writing. She incorporates the Lord's presence in the characters without coming across as preachy. Such a remarkable gift.

If you enjoy historical fiction that goes a bit deeper than most and has some interesting facts intertwined, you'll enjoy this incredible journey. I highly recommend A Refuge Assured.

Travel with Vivienne from Paris to Pennsylvania. Come along for a journey that will sweep you off your feet and plant your imagination firmly in the pages of this epic tale. This story is a delightful kaleidoscope of vibrant picturesque phrases, abundant in historical details and a rich depth of emotion. In short, a veritable pleasure to the senses.

I enjoyed learning new details about the French Revolution as seen through the eyes of a royal lacemaker. I gained a deeper understanding of what the French Revolution looked like. Jocelyn brings history to life by putting you right in the thick of the action. The story and the people became real, not just another story on the page in history.

The characters are authentic and they draw you into their story, I felt a wide-range of sweeping emotion, from elation to sadness and everything in between. No stone is left un-turned. I felt fully immersed in the story and in the lives of Vivienne & Liam.

This story is a delight to any history loving bibliophile. You won’t want to miss out on this exceptional story! I give A Refuge Assured 5-stars and highly recommend it to any who enjoy reading historical fiction.

A Refuge Assured, by Jocelyn Green, is historical fiction at its absolute finest. Every single word and phrase within this outstanding novel is rich with deep meaning and thoughtful purpose. The extremely well-researched details and the remarkably stunning descriptions ensure that every moment spent reading this book is a profound experience to be savored and treasured. With an intensely compelling plot that flows effortlessly through intricate scenes of adversity, suspense, intrigue, romance, sacrifice, and redemption, this novel holds nestled within its pages everything a reader wholeheartedly desires. It is most certainly a novel worthy of copious compliments, continuous attention, and frequent re-readings. A Refuge Assured has truly left a lasting impression upon my heart and in my mind. That a story so full of tragedy and loss could be told so beautifully and be infused with such hope is a testament to the phenomenal writing talent the author possesses. This is the first book I have read by Jocelyn Green, but with it she has easily secured a place among my most favorite of authors. It is with sincere enthusiasm and great pleasure that I recommend this unforgettable novel to all readers. *I was given a copy of this novel from the publisher. A review was not required. I eagerly awaited this newest by Ms Green and wow, what a homerun! A page turner from start to finish. The terror of the French Revolution is portrayed through the eyes of a woman, who is at risk because of her craft of lacemaking. Lacemaking was viewed as an art form that must be destroyed by the rising rebellion in their quest to destroy the royal house and all they stood for. As a reader, I was transported to this dark time for France as political differences and passions swept through the nation. The heroine, Vivienne, flees France to seek asylum in America only to land in another country that is struggling with its own identity. A young boy comes under her care and questions arise about his lineage, even suspecting he may be the son of Marie Antoinette. Thus, the young boy and Vivienne are caught in a tug of war of conflict. The story is full of emotional turmoil. I learned so much through the historical elements the author pens. I loved the principle characters as Vivienne and Liam’s romance beautifully emerges. The chemistry they share is portrayed as strong, brave and beautiful. I loved this book!! 5 stars.

Jocelyn Green does a remarkable job of writing page-turning historical fiction with ample action and romantic interests. She accomplishes this while still allowing her strong personal faith to shine through the actions and thoughts of the characters. Her new novel, A Refuge Assured, follows this tradition. Vivienne Rivard is a lace maker in France during the French revolution. She is forced to flee for her life to America. She is creating a comfortable life for herself in America when custody of a small boy is forced on her. Her life is once again in danger when the lad appears to be Louis-Charles, the “Lost King”. Ill equipped to take care of a small child, she struggles to make a home and protect him in this new country.

Although the people in this story are fictional, the places, events and emotions are real. The plot is sufficiently complex to keep you engaged but not so much as to confuse you. It is well thought out and there is enough unpredictability to keep you turning pages. The three main characters are well developed and you are engaged with them, feeling their hopes, fears and sentiments.

I loved this book and couldn’t stop reading. Ms. Green writes a wonderful novel that can be enjoyed by all ages, young and old and I highly recommend it.

A Refuge Assured is full of historical detail. The beginning of the novel is set in late 1700s Paris, France providing readers with the feel of the French Revolution and background for main character Vivienne Rivard. The majority of the novel, however, takes place in Philadelphia.

While Vivienne is the main focus, there is another compelling story line as well. To share more about that would be a spoiler.

I close the novel feeling I've visited both Paris and Philadelphia during such a tumultuous time period. Jocelyn does an excellent job of providing readers with visuals, smells and feelings for locations. My only frustration and it was minor was the use of both Vienne and Vivienne. However, I got used to the switch between the two and was not distracted by it after a couple of chapters.

Overall, this is another fabulous historical novel penned by Jocelyn Green. It is clear she puts a great deal of research into her work. This reader definitely appreciates that.

My gratitude to publisher Bethany House for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and the opinions expressed are my own.

Based on Jocelyn Green writing my favorite Civil War series I knew I was in for a treat reading this and believe me it did not disappoint. The author writes novels steeped in historical detail so well you will believe you are there with the characters experiencing it, from the descriptions to the sights, sounds, smells and even the characters thoughts.
The book starts out in late 1700s Paris, France and gives readers a feel of the French Revolution and sets us up with the main character's background from lace making to the story of her mother.
I was especially fascinated to read how the majority of the story took place in my home state of Pennsylvania,it took place in Philadelphia to be exact. I even found out the Pittsburgh Post Gazette newspaper used to be called the Pittsburgh Gazette when it first started out. It's so fascinating the historical facts you can find out with some research and I appreciate the author doing just this.
This book held my attention firmly gripped and it won't be soon forgotten.
I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to her next book.

A Refuge Assured by Jocelyn Green was an excellent novel in a setting and time in history that is often not as explored in fiction. The plot was well written and explored the fear of the French Revolution both in France and even in the French Quarter in America as well as the anger of many Americans at the imposition of the Whisky tax and the ensuing Whiskey Rebellion. I was drawn into the fears, anger, and other emotions of the time as both Liam and Vivienne sought to find their place in a changing time. There were instances of suspense, betrayal, and danger that added to the story and kept me glued to the pages. I liked both Liam and Vivienne, and I enjoyed seeing how they adapted to the struggles of farming and rebellion and learned to trust more fully in God as well as one another. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, and I look forward to reading more of Jocelyn Green's novels. I received this novel from Bethany House through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

From France to Pennsylvania your life is in danger because you make lace? This is brought about because of a frenzy of people who hate the monarchy, and will go to extremes to get rid of all chances that it will return to power, killing young children, and innocents.
With a heavy heart the author has brought our lacemaker Vivienne Rivard actually running for her life, and puts in her path a young mother and child that will forever change her, and a hurt American Revolutionary, and Irishman, Liam Delaney. Soon I was googling for information about the happenings of the French Revolution and the child King.
We watch with horror as injustice seems to follow our heroin across the ocean, and we cringe when those we admire through history are responsible for doing some of these same things that brought them to the War of Independence. We learn that some we trust cannot be trusted, and what they do is beyond my imagination.
A historical story that is full of information that I did not know, and once started I could not put it down. Enjoy!

Influenza decided to foil my best laid plans, and too sick to even pick up a book, I had to languish thinking about this story for almost a week. It was not in vain. This book lived up to the build up that I had in my mind. Ready to enter the French revolution from the inside? Each portion of the story is intricately woven, much like the lace the character has made. Small mysteries keep cropping up, along with historical info that you never knew about the United States.

Jocelyn Green does her historical research, and you will not be disappointed with this one. Well known French words sprinkled throughout the novel make it feel authentic without making you wish you had a dictionary. This story is one of love, forgiveness, and renewal. It will have you see the revolution through eyes in a different way than ever before. Are you looking for a companion book to A Tale of Two Cities for your high school student? This one would be perfect.

I obtained this book from the publisher. The opinions contained herein are my own.

I would highly recommend you put this one on the top of your “must purchase” list.

Fleeing for her life, Vivienne Rivard leaves her life and France behind in search of refuge from those who would bring down French nobility. But when she arrives in Philadelphia, things aren't as promising as she was led to believe with America swirling from the effects of the American Revolution. It seems she traded one country's unrest for another.

Yet, Vivienne is determined to thrive in this new country, and finds a way to sell her craft of lacemaking to the Americans and other refuges alike. And when she and the handsome Liam Delaney are introduced, it would seem refuge might be found not in a country, but in one another.

I think if you love history and historical fiction, you'll truly enjoy reading A Refugee Assured!

This was a beautiful and sometimes difficult book. You don't often come across books set during the French Revolution, but Jocelyn Green has done a beautiful job giving a look at life for aristocrats and artisans who were forced to escape France or face Madame Guillotine. I had no idea before I read this book, that being a lace maker was a death sentence in revolutionary France, but it was since lace was seen as a symbol of the aristocracy. Vivienne is a wonderfully strong heroine in this story who faces, fights, and works to escape everyone and everything that wants to destroy her and her ward. And then there's Liam who's just the sort of hero you want in a story: strong, caring, principled, opinionated, and unendingly loyal.

There were times that it wasn't easy to read this book––some parts are dark and others are incredibly sad, but through it all is woven a stunning tale of hope and the fight for refuge. I truly enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to Ms. Green's next book!

Dangerous, Detailed, and Descriptive are all good words to describe the depth of A Refuge Assured by Jocelyn Green. The story takes place during the French Revolution which would have been a terrible time period to live in. Throughout the story the reader undergoes the same feeling and emotions that the main characters must have felt (if they were really alive). As Vivienne leaves the danger in France to come to America, one can feel her sense of relief to have escaped the horror taking place there; yet one can also sense the pain that she must have felt at leaving the only home she knew. Once she arrives in America only to get involved in another perilous situation, the reader wonders if anywhere is really safe for her. Because of the emotions I was feeling as I read the story, I was startled when I learned a person I trusted couldn't be trusted anymore. Jocelyn Green did a marvelous job of making the reader feel the danger and the emotions right along with the characters. Although this is a fiction story, the historical details were rich and deep. The author must have spent much time researching the historical aspect of the book, and even more time weaving those details into the plot of her fiction story in a way that the reader cannot discern what part is fiction and what part is fact. Lastly, the descriptive words the author used help one experience the story with all the senses. One experiences the smells such as the sweat mixed with produce and meat on Market Street. One experiences the taste of the vanilla ice cream or the baguette that Vivienne bakes. One experiences the feel of the cool, ground covered in dew as Vivienne kneels in her garden. One can visualize the scenes around them as the story progresses to each location. Mrs. Green uses exceptional descriptive imagery so that one truly feels a part of the story.

If you are looking for a light, fast book to read, this will not be the right book for you. But if you are looking for a book that is full of historical details, dangerous situations, and vivid descriptions, then I highly recommend that you read A Refuge Assured as soon as possible.

Thank you Bethany House for the wonderful opportunity to review this book!

What a delightful read this was! This is a beautiful historical book and one I definitely recommend reading.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The characters, setting, and the plot all fit so well together. I absolutely loved this authors writing style and the way she describes everything. This is definitely a new favorite for me.

I have to say that one of my favorite parts of this book is the plot. It was so delightful! With the French people, war, lacemakers, noble heirs, I was drawn into this book. New things kept coming left and right and it was all so intriguing. While I loved the beginning with being in Europe, I did find the book to be a little slow at the start. ( The reason for the star off ) It’s a big book though and I really enjoyed it once things started to take off.

This is an amazing historical book and I definitely recommend that everyone get a copy!

After seeing so many rave reviews for this book I can now see why! Jocelyn Green is a new author for me, but I'm so glad I was introduced! At first I struggled because I wasn't sure where the book was going, but then BAM! Plot Twist! (Nope, sorry not spoiling). In truth, it's enough to see why the author didn't share more on the back cover. When you don't know what's about to hit, it shocks you even more. The drama and characters felt so real that I felt as if I was standing right beside them. More than once I caught myself gasping or shouting "what??" (This comically not uncommon for me, but a clear indicator that the book is good enough to suck me in). The close of the 1700's was a very dramatic time in history felt around the world. There was a lot of violence and upheaval while people desperately hoped for peace and rest. As the author shared in her notes at the end, while the main characters were purely fictional, many of the characters and events were real to the time. I felt history come alive with each of the character's physical and emotional battles a page at at time.

This may have been my first book that I've read by Jocelyn Green, but I'm sure it won't be my last! She was able to bring history to life in such a powerful way that I can't wait to read her again!

Hauntingly beautiful! Jocelyn Green delivers another riveting story with the skill of a master craftsman. She masterfully weaves the story of refugees from the French Revolution seeking asylum in Pennsylvania, as our young country struggles in its' infancy with such controversial events as the Whiskey Rebellion.
While there is much historical detail, it never overshadowed the story. The author artistically pens images of early American life with words that appeals to all of the senses. I found her characters to be endearing, in spite of their many flaws.
This is a story filled with heart-breaking loss and triumph that rises above tragedy. It is a story of relationships and loyalties. It is a story of finding one's moral compass. It is a story of forgiveness. But most importantly, it is a story of finding home, family, a refuge....and knowing all along one can always find refuge and strength in God.

The characters are fantastic. They are so well developed and so varied that I was captivated and felt like I really knew them. Some of them I wished that I could just wrap them in a big hug and comfort them for all the heartache and loss that they had suffered.

I know that I had heard about the French Revolution in school. This book set me in the middle of it and I saw the horrors and felt the terror through the lives of these characters.

Rich in historical detail and abounding in fascinating characters, A Refuge Assured is the perfect blend of intrigue, suspense, history, and romance. Jocelyn Green has crafted a spectacular tale that kept me spellbound from the first page to the end. Set against backdrops in France and Pennsylvania in the late 1700s, the history of those areas was integral to the story and seamlessly combined with the fictional tale. I enjoyed learning more about the happenings during that time period.

The main characters, Vivienne and Liam, were endearing and memorable, and they hit me right in the heart as they struggled to overcome their difficulties. With tender messages of forgiveness of self and others, along with faith and hope, this book has earned a spot on my keeper shelf. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy clean historical fiction. I will definitely be looking forward to more books from this author.

I really loved this story. Historical Fiction at it's finest! Half way though the novel I found myself googling the Whisky Rebellion by the frontier farmers in Western Pennsylvania, and at the end I was looking up information on the French Azilum (or Asylum) in Pennsylvania, a place for French refugees! What a fascinating ride from Paris to Pennsylvania. So much of the framework of the story comes straight from the pages of French and American history. From the French Revolution to the place for French refugees seeking asylum in America, this novel expertly weaves themes of revolution, tyranny and freedom in the story line, as well as personal discovery for the characters as they find out who they really are are in light of family, faith, and all the political upheavals happening around them. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I would be surprised by a twist. Historical fiction fans will love A Refuge Assured, I highly recommend it!

Jocelyn Green’s novels are always a delight to read and can transport you to another time and place with her writing. Her newest release, A Refuge Assured, is no exception.

I loved this book! The history presented in this book was amazing, and I learned so much that I did not know about. Did you know that the French had a settlement in Pennsylvania that was prepared for Marie Antoinette and her children to escape to when the Reign of Terror happened in France? I think the author did a great job portraying the attitudes and feelings that would of been running high during this unstable time in world history. The characters were written well and grew so much through the story. I can’t say enough good about this story. This book is truly one everyone should have in their libraries!

A Refuge Assured by Jocelyn Green is a wonderfully well written, historical romance that occurs in the era of the French Revolution and spans across the seas from Europe to America. Ms. Green's writing shows a depth of research, engaging characters and a written story that brings it to all to life. As I read this captivating romance I was moved to tears, laughter and all the emotions in between. For me, the story just jumped off the pages and took me along for the ride! First, let me start off by saying that Jocelyn Green is one of my favorite authors, and I’ll be happy to tell you why.

I am a fan of historical fiction. And because I know that Jocelyn is an avid researcher and I have read her other books, I know I can count on a well-written novel that draws me in with rich history and attention to detail. A Refuge Assured did not disappoint.

Jocelyn has such an easy and inviting writing style that immediately time warps you into the past and you feel like you are just THERE experiencing all the sights, sounds and smells along with the characters in the story. You truly don’t realize that you are LEARNING along the way because you are so absorbed in the narrative. I confess that I'm the person who will Google facts I am unfamiliar with and found myself surfing the Internet for information about the Whiskey Rebellion, French refugees to America, the lost Dauphin, and French Azilum. I did enjoy the variety of complex characters (Liam, Finn, and Tara were my favorite!) and how their pieces made up a delightful puzzle set in a fascinating period of history. I truly loved the storyline between Vivienne and Armand, and found it particularly touching (I shed tears reading their interactions on several occasions).

I flip back and forth throughout the books I read to refresh my memory, so I would have liked to have had a glossary to flip to for the definition of the French words. I didn't care for the back and forth use of the heroine's name and nickname (Vivienne/Vienne). It was a little distracting, but I eventually got to the point where I overlooked it. I did feel like the book was just a little on the long side. And SPOILER ALERT: It took way too long for the main characters to get together (in my opinion!).

If you are a fan of historical fiction, I highly recommend A Refuge Assured AND Jocelyn Green!

I love reading historical fiction. Jocelyn Green is one of my favorite authors because she does such extensive research to make sure that her books are historically accurate. I like that A Refuge Assured, like Mark of the King, is set in a time period that hasn't been overdone. Green's books always prompt me to look further into the actual people, places, and events she's included in her novels.

I love Christian historical fiction, but haven't been reading it much lately because of the trite plot line...single woman of faith with a troubled past struggling to make her way in the world...child without parents...noble, handsome, only slightly flawed, hero who's been burnt by love and afraid to try again versus the manipulative antagonist who only wants the woman as a pawn to somehow benefit his "plan." The hero defeats the "bad guy." The woman, hero, and child become a family and live happily ever after. >yawn< A Refuge Assured has many of these plot elements, and that is why I only gave it 4 stars. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a plot twist I would not have predicted! (I won't spoil it for the potential reader by noting it here!)

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and like the rest of Green's novels, I was sad that it was over.

Fulfilling like a wonderful meal that you savor. So rich in history and detail that you come away so much more knowledgeable of this time and place, as well as enjoying a wonderful story. The strength of these people and what they endured is so inspiring and still holding on to their faith. Wow....impressive story, writing, and research. Not a light and fluffy read, but a story with depth and layers that keep you engrossed from start to finish. The characters grab your heart and you want to aid them in their journey that God has set before them. I love this quote from Tante Rose to Vivienne, “God is the Creator, is He not? So when we create, even if it is a mere length of lace and not the stars in the Heavens, we honor Him. We bear His likeness when we work.” Just beautiful, lyrical writing.

Jocelyn Green's A Refuge Assured is an intriguing look at the life of a woman who was a lacemaker to the court of Marie Antoinette. Although a work of fiction, it is obvious that Ms. Green has done her research. The story is well written with a believable plot. I really enjoyed the characters. Ms. Green has done a wonderful job of recreating life in Paris and Philadelphia at the time of the French revolution. I could practically smell and taste the air of the docks. I could also imagine the fragrance of the fresh bread and French pastries, just reading the descriptions made my mouth water! So if you are a lover of well researched historical fiction grab a copy of A Refuge Assured and settle in with a cup of tea and a pastry or two for a great read.

That moment when you've finished a wonderful book and you don't want to let it go ... so you read the author's notes ... and you find YOUR NAME in them. What!? Wow. I'd forgotten that Jocelyn Green had asked a horse question on Facebook probably a year ago. She was looking for a good breed of horse to use in a Colonial-era story. I suggested the Narragansett Pacer, and sure enough, she used it. She even remembered me. How sweet is that?!

It's no secret that I'm a huge Jocelyn Green fan, so you won't think it odd that I gave this book five stars, but honestly, it's that good. Well-researched, engaging characters, unique setting, and all wrapped around a very interesting period in history, when the French were fighting for their freedom and the U.S. was struggling to hold on to theirs. Beautiful story. Read it. Soak it up.

Vivienne is a lace maker for the queen, Marie Antoinette. When the French Monarchy is overturned and the revolution begins, Vivienne is no longer safe in France.
She takes a journey to America, to Philadelphia, where she stays in a boarding house. A woman in the next room has a son about the same age as Louis-Charles, the boy king of France. The woman soon dies leaving her son, Henri, in the care of Vivienne, and they soon move to the refuge village that was built for the queen.
Vivienne very slowly falls in love with Liam, and Irish-American with his own revolution to fight.
Over all this, a really good story. A little too drawn out at points, and at others a tad confusing. Definitely worth the read, such a beautiful romance between Vivienne and Liam.

I loved this book! The characters are rich and layered. I love that I learned so much about The French Revolution and The Whiskey Rebellion. I studied both of these events in high school, but I have forgotten so much over the years. The main character is a lace maker which makes her a traitor to the new French government. She flees the country for America where she thinks she will be safe, but there is a lot of anti-French Monarchy sentiments in the states at this time. Alexander Hamilton makes an appearance as well as several lesser known historical figures.

I loved the faith thread that was woven through out the story. Vivienne is always looking for a literal and spiritual refuge and finally finds it in the end. I highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction.

Another wonderful book by Jocelyn Green "A Refuge Assured". Rich in history, it is set during the French Revolution and the Whiskey Rebellion in America. Vivienne Rivard escapes from France because she has no more family and she is a lacemaker. A profession that is no longer acceptable and will lead to her death. But America isn't safe either especially after her friend dies and she agrees to care for her son. People believe he could be the young king of France in hiding and that puts both their lives in danger. She meets Liam Delany who helps get them to safety, or so they think. So many things happen in the book affecting the lives of many. A wonderful story. Looking forward to more books from Ms. Green.

What a wonderful story! Jocelyn Green brings history to life through her stories. When I pick up a book, I like to be entertained but I also like to learn new things. I didn’t know a lot about the French refugee’s in America or the Whiskey rebellion. Both are fascinating to read. I feel like this story could have really happened. I could see it in my mind’s eye. All the character’s were so real, it’s hard to remember they aren’t actually real people. I liked most of the character’s because some just could not be liked. Joceleyn Green character’s learn important truths of forgiveness, love, second chances and hope . I think we can learn from these character’s as well.

I recommend this book to my family and friends.

This book was truly phenomenal, heart wrenching, and so well done! I tried to read this one slowly...to absorb everything that was written on the pages. Such a terrific story with loveable characters, an unusual setting, and ( my favorite part) a lot of obscure history! This book contains so much about the French Revolution and the French themselves. It also contains fascinating facts about the Whiskey Rebellion.

The best way I could describe this book is SO FULL! Good reads to me are always the hardest to review. The best words are contained in the book itself. I love a good story, and I love to learn. The reader gets both in this novel.

Really and truly don’t miss out on this one..especially historical fiction fans!

Jocelyn Green's superpower is taking a piece of history, researching every angle of it, and crafting a story set in that era so expertly that her readers feel that they've been placed right in the midst of the character's lives. Green has accomplished this in each of her novels. However, if required to pick my favorite of her books I wouldn't hesitate. It's A Refuge Assured.

With breathtakingly beautiful prose, well rounded and fully realized characters, and a plot with enough intrigue to keep the reading turning pages A Refuge Assured deserves every single accolade and glowing review.

I highly recommend this book for history buffs, homeschool families (probably for high school and up), readers of Christian fiction, and anyone who just really loves a well crafted novel.

Any book that says Jocelyn Green I grab without even reading the back because I know I will love it. And it was true with this book.

This is a time that I never have given a lot of thought to, the French Revolution. What a horrible time for the French and even here in America the French weren’t always treated very well.

I loved how Jocelyn brought in some of our founding fathers, like Alexander Hamilton and George Washington.

The story itself is very well written and rich in character development. I adored Vivienne and Liam, both wonderful characters to spend time with.

If you love historical romance then I highly recommend this one.

A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher. All opinions are my own.

What an enjoyable way to learn some history! Not only does Jocelyn Green draw rich characters for her readers, she weaves a wonderful story around real people and chunks of history. The musical "Hamilton" is in Des Moines right now, so it was fun to learn about Liam's friend Alex Hamilton--yes, Alex--and his "Watermelon Army" and tax leading to the Whiskey Rebellion, which he believed was a Jacobin attempt to overthrow the new American government. The Author's Note and Acknowledgments is just delicious, including the fact that you can visit Asylum, Pennsylvania, which was indeed built as a refuge for Marie Antoinette and her children. The book also includes Discussion Questions.

Jocelyn Green has masterfully crafted a beautifully written story in A Refuge Assured. she is an awesome storyteller and it truly shows in this novel. It is apparent that she did intense historical research. I never heard of the post American Revolutionary War era French Quarter in Philadelphia. I was fascinated and intrigued by Vivienne, Liam and Henri.
A Refuge Assured is a perfect example why Jocelyn Green is among my "must go to" authors for a wonderful historical genre read. I give this one 100 stars.
I received this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Can you imagine being killed because you made lace! This is the danger Vivienne faced during the French Revolution! Vivienne is a well-written female protagonist who escapes to America. Life for French people is not easy. Liam Delaney fought in the American Revolution and is a strong leading male character. Jocelyn Green presents many interesting historical facts including Asylum, Pennsylvania (a safe home for French refugees) and the Whiskey Rebellion. Anyone who enjoys historical fiction will love A Refuge Assured! I received a complimentary Advance Reader Copy from Bethany House. This is my honest opinion.

I was truly captivated with this book from page 1. I love how Jocelyn Green weaves history and fiction together so well. I turned the last page of this book, (with tears in my eyes), knowing so much more about America’s early years. Vivienne and Liam’s story was so heartfelt and beautiful. And don’t get me started on little Henri... I fell in love with that boy! The spiritual lessons these characters walked through are stunning. I loved the thread of Vivienne and Henri learning that no matter what your last name is, if you are a Christian, you are a child of the King... and nothing else matters. This story is truly a beauty from ashes story that I will not forget.

Green's writing seems to get better and stronger with every novel she writes! A Refuge Assured is remarkably written and highlights little known aspects of American history. I especially love that this book helps us ponder what freedom really is, whether there can be negative aspects to it, and how our spirituality and morals play an important part in it. A sweeping story that is hard to put down, I highly recommend A Refuge Assured.

P.S. I received a review copy from Bethany House Publishers. All opinions are my own.

I absolutely loved this book. Listed as general fiction, A Refuge Assured takes place in the1790s. It's a novel for the Christian market, but is never boring or scrubbed of violence. After all, civil wars, uprisings, and historical rebellions tended to be as bloody during the French Revolution compelling Vivienne to flee the country she loved. This novel isn't for the faint of heart, or those with impressionable minds. Nevertheless, A Refuge Assured by Jocelyn Green is a great read for 2018.

I have been eagerly looking forward to reading this book. The combination of the French Revolution with the struggles of the early American government captured my attention and A Refuge Assured delivers and exceeds my expectations.
The book is filled with historical detail, but it's never overwhelming. The plot is quick paced and interesting, and the characters will linger after the last page is closed.
I enjoyed every word of this book and eagerly await her next one!

A history book? Mmmm, maybe. A romance? Mmmm maybe that too. Let's say it's both. It is a beautiful story of love and forgiveness. It's so packed full of detail and historical information you don't even realize it is a history lesson wrapped up in a romance. It is so well written and edited. It took me a few chapters to get into the story, but once I did I couldn't put it down. I loved it! (I received a complimentary copy of this book. A review was not required and all opinions are my own.)

Green has once again delivered a masterful work of historical fiction. True to her form, this novel is well researched and includes many interesting historical characters and scenes. Her characters and settings are vivid and enjoyable. The faith element threads through the novel as beautifully as the lace the protagonist created. Fine, beautiful, and not forced.

Vivienne flees the French revolution to save her life. She finds herself thrust into a surprising new life in America, with it's own new dangers. She finds a second chance at a family. But can she find refuge?

A fascinating and beautifully told story about a part of history I was unfamiliar with. I loved the way Jocelyn cut out the characters' stories from the pages of history and I absolutely felt for them in their hardships. I also appreciated the author's honest exploration of freedom versus the need for order, both on an individual level and for that of one's country. So well-researched, so well done!

Green paints a gorgeously intricate picture of grace, struggle, faith, forgiveness, and beauty in A Refuge Assured. The historical detail is breathtaking and almost becomes it's own character. The characters are rich, deep, lovable (except for the few you love to hate!), and the twists and turns will keep you guessing until the last page. Once again, Green paints a stunning picture of grace and forgiveness, illuminating the gospel in a fresh way, that isn't preachy or pushy. I didn't want it to end.

This book was so good! I loved watching Vivienne grow from the lacemaker to the queen into the independent American woman she became. I found this period of history rather fascinating. I don't read a lot of early American (Post-Revolution), so this particular period was rather new to me. I enjoyed it.

I received a copy from Bethany House to review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

I LOVE reading history through the eyes of authors like Jocelyn Green. There is so much of it that I didn't realize was intertwined or really didn't grasp the first time I learned it. The impact of Revolutions, for instance.

This book was expertly researched, wonderfully written, and had several threads intricately woven through the story that I just loved!

Excellent read, do recommend!

Beautiful story!! Jocelyn Green is an amazing author whose books keep on getting better! "A Refuge Assured" is the story of a young French woman who is forced to flee her beloved France due to her being a lacemaker (a crime worthy of death in those days). Vivienne goes through so much as we witness her struggles, trials, and joys in America. I learned so much about the French Revolution and the Whiskey Rebellion from this book. The characters really come alive and will stay with you even after you are done reading. It is definitely a page turner brimming with history, romance, and mystery that will keep you up reading late at night! Wonderful work of Christian Fiction!

Just fantastic. I always learn so much when reading a Jocelyn Green novel. This was based on history I knew next to nothing about. (I must've zoned out when learning about the French Revolution in school.) Vivienne, Liam, and Henri were wonderful main characters and their story kept my interest throughout. 5 stars.

The characters are well defined, and you are interested in them from the start. I learned a lot about the French Revolution and also about the US's Whiskey Rebellion from this book. The author uses both fictional and real characters, and real places and events to tell her story. The characters are interwoven with each other. I'll read this book again.

Lush with historical detail, and stitched with threads of romance and intrigue, "A Refuge Assured" is Jocelyn Green's finest story yet. Delving deep into the issues of freedom versus moral law, abandonment, and loss, not only do the characters uncover the beautiful intricacies of God's guiding hand, but this masterfully woven story carries the reader into places of deeper truth and freedom in the Father's unconditional love.

Wow! This book really left me searching for words. Simply said, it is so good! Full of richly drawn characters, drama, danger, intrigue, righting wrongs, forgiveness, and compassion. It is a book that stays with you long after you've read the last page.
The amount of history in this book is astounding, I learned much from it yet it doesn't feel like a textbook.
The characters and scenes are so richly written, I felt like I was watching a movie as I was reading. I could see everything as it was happening.
I loved the diversity in this book too. French aristocrats, Irish families, Americans, and a Freedman.
The romance between Vivienne and Liam was very subtle and natural and not the main focus of the book.
I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know.
*Updated review* I own a Kindle copy of this book now! I can take it with me everywhere!

A Refuge Assured, by Jocelyn Green, is a historical fiction novel based around the French Revolution. Vivienne is a lacemaker who made lace for the royal family. For this reason her life is in danger. She left France and came to America. The story takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the late 1700's. Vivienne smuggles some of her lace to America with her and tries to sell it to survive. When illness hits the area, she helps care for the ill. Her friend dies and Vivienne is left to care for her friend's son. Many people feel the young boy is the future king of France. Vivienne is forced to move to keep him safe.
Liam is a mail carrier and brother to Vivienne's employer. When he finds out Vivienne has to move quickly, he takes her and the boy to claim their home in Asylum. What he is not expecting is that the property he purchased and has been improving is not really his, it belongs to Vivienne's father.
This is a good book with lots of history, both French and American. The story dwells on the imposition of the liquor tax and military actions to enforce it. The story is so well written it is easy to envision the tiny details of using the treads to form beautiful, delicate late. It's also easy to imagine the fear Vivienne must have felt in protecting the young boy and the cold they traveled in to safety. As well as the pain the young boy felt with leaving his home, losing his mother and friends.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction. I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishing, this is my honest review.

Lacemaker Vivienne Rivard’s life is endangered because of her profession. After seeing her beloved Tante Rose executed and her mother die of illness, Vivienne snatches an opportunity to leave France and escape the Revolution. Arriving in Philadelphia, she begins a new life with the determination to be independent and forge her own way. She thinks she is safe from the world of brutality she left behind, that is until she gains custody of a young boy, many think is the Dauphin. Again she must flee the danger lurking as revolutionary sympathizers try to harm Henri, the boy she vows to protect.

Militiaman Liam Delaney has his own battles to fight as he finds himself trapped in an impossible situation trying to protect his cousin from the oppressive tax on whiskey. When his path intersects with Vivienne Rivard he finds himself drawn to her and Henri, wanting to protect them both.

This novel is rich in history. The author creates a beautiful story interweaving strong and independent characters with the turmoil of the French Revolution as the backdrop. It was obvious the author did an extensive amount of research on the history of this time period. It was enlightening to learn about the chaos and unrest that existed for the French nobility during the 1790’s. Sensitive readers may find some of the content of this book difficult to read, as it discusses the horrors of death by guillotine and an attitude of it being okay in that society. There were other incidences and descriptions of war and hatred toward certain people groups. However, these incidences were true to history and the author wrote about it as a historical detail and without minimizing the cruelty of it.

I appreciated Vivienne’s spirit, resourcefulness and tenacity. She was a woman to be admired by the way she overcame her past and moved into her new future. And Liam was man of conviction and strength. In addition, the supporting characters were well developed and aided in brining the story to life and offering another perspective to the main narrative involving Liam and Vivienne.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction novel and would highly recommend reading it.
