Learn How to Create Fantastic Fire-Breathing Dragons

This book is filled with incredible illustration's. My 12 y/o asked for a 'how to draw dragon's' book for Christmas. I was hoping the step by steps would be a little simpler, but if this book doesn't inspire her to draw dragon's I'm not sure that there is one out there that will. Should be said that (for me) attempting do anything more then doodling on paper has always intimidated me and my prejudice on the lvl of difficulty of this book could just come from that. In fact, best that I return and edit my review in a week or so after my daughter has really given it a go. Plus, the more I look over the book, the more inspired I'm feeling to try my hand at some of these drawing's too!

I bought this and "DragonArt Evolution" at the same time, so I will kind of compare the two here. This book has mostly drawings in it, and not a lot of finished color work, but there definitely is some. It looks like it was done with colored pencil, which doesn't appeal to me as much as the clear, brilliant digital coloring in DragonArt. This book has a ton of examples to help add details to your dragon: types of wings, tails, scales, horns, etc. Moreso than DragonArt (which also has quite a bit). Lots of different positions and actions are illustrated as well, such as flying, sleeping, attacking, etc.
I'd say if you are really looking to draw dragons, this is a no-brainer. Get it. I'd be hard-pressed to chose a favorite between this and DragonArt because they both have a lot of common ground but also excel a bit in different areas. I think my only complaint about this book is it doesn't give you quite enough variety of dragon heads as DragonArt. Some of the heads felt too similar at times. Overall, though, a great book.

I overall really like this book. It has one major pro that makes me enjoy drawing with it; it is simple. There are no crazy grammer in it and it teaches you to draw amazing in the easiest way ever! No really, the techniques Mrs. (or Ms) Staples uses are really good for beginners! I use her techniques with almost everything I draw to this day.

I really credit this boon with all the artistic skills I have today. This book instantly transformed my art from scribbles to wonderful peices of art. It not only helped me draw dragons, but many other things, since a lot of the techniques can be used for almost everything. Thanks to this book, I have realized my talent and, as impossible as it may seem, it has also contibuted to what I want to do with my career.

My sister bought Drawing Dragons for my nine-year-old, dragon-loving son. The full-color illustrations are gorgeous, and the step-by-step instructions have led to the most spectacular drawings of dragons ever to grace my refrigerator door, my Facebook cover photo, etc. Not only does the book contain directions for drawing full dragons, it also shows how to draw various body parts so the artist can create his own dragons or alter the details of the dragons shown in the book. I've been blown away by the energy and detail in my son's dragon sketches since he started using this book. Seriously, it's a magical book!

This artist is passionate about her art and her book stimulates enthusiasm and confidence in young (or grown-up!) artists. There are endless ideas and possibilities in this richly illustrated book filled with color and inspiration. Thank you, Sandra, for living your dream and sharing your art!!

The author does a great job at breaking the complexity of dragons into simple starting patterns and pieces, then shows you how to add detail and personality to achieve the final effect.
