It's the best book I've read. It made feel as if I was in the game. I now know why it got a Newbery Honor Award. I liked it sooo much I bought the sequel. I was astonished that the main character was going to die. I'm so glad I read it. I'm going to try to read it every year.

Our teacher told us to read this book to answer questions. This book is dull and uses too many adjectives at the same time. Every question is like: explain, describe, explain, describe, describe. If like 90% of the words are adjectives, how could you even write a book. I think the author was too confused.
I would rate this book 0 stars if possible. How could there be a mental idiot in that such small town? The chances are like 0.333%. I think it's also too weird (Girls dont fit well with Boys, especially at the same where, who, what, when, why).

The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder is a book that I would recommend to anyone who likes Egyptian mythology. It had some information about ancient Egypt, and I liked the characters. I also liked the mystery of it all. I would like to read some other books by this author.
Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library :: When You Reach Me (Yearling Newbery) :: Warcross :: Creatura (The Creatura Series Book 1) :: Declan + Coraline (Ruthless People Book 0)

My eight-year-old daughter and I enjoyed reading this book out loud (she is pretty much obsessed with ancient Egypt at the moment.) A good read, with good lessons about not always believing your first impressions of people.

Hi, I am a girl and I am in the Dryden Book Club. We meet every two weeks and this week we are reading The Egypt Game. I have just started the first two chapters. My favorite thing about this book is that it's ancient. Our Book Club meets again on Thursday the 24th.

A mysterious game soon turns scary after 6 kids
pretending to be Egyptians find out there was a
murderer lurking around. Will they find him in time?
The book started out boring but it got better towards the end.
I wouldn't recommend this book. It doesn't say much about Egypt.

This book is pretty stupid because, they make this stupid storage yard into a land they call Egypt. By they I mean April,Melanie,Marshall,Elizabeth,Ken,and Toby. This book is basically about a girl who has to live with her grandmother, for a certain amount of time. She ends up making some good friends .I think this book is really ridiculous because it is like a chick flick in a book. It is like this because it basically consists of girls who are oh so dramatic about Egypt. Also the book tells about a murder and doesnt say anything and then something happens. I would not waste money on this.

I think Zilpha Snyder did a great job writing the book The Egypt Game. There were some exciting parts like when April was in trouble. Then it was interesting to read how the Egyption kids did their ceremonies. The book was entertaining and fun to read.

Upon recieving the requiered reading list I said "Blah! More bad books." I decided to read the Egypt game and to my suprise it was (gasp) actually good and readable. It was fun and imaginative and thrilled me to keep on reading. The book is great from the beginning to exciting end. So if you see this book in your requiered reading list, I would recommend for you to check it out and read it.

The Egypt Game is the best book I have ever read. I love the way it is written. It starts off boring but once you start reading you won't want to stop. I like the way it ended. I will just say that at the end the characters got what they deserved.

This book is very bad. It is about six kids who play in an old man's backyard. The characters are three girls, a four year old boy, and two "weird" boys. The book doesn't pick up until the last few chapters. It's a girls book . In my reading group only the girls said it was "O.K." If want to read it because you like Egyptian stuff, DON'T. Save your time and money and don't read this book. If you liked this book there is a sequel The Gypsy Game. In my mind this book is horrible, for boys anyway.

I think that this book took to long to get interesting. I painfully read 17 chapters with no entertianment. The book took a while to get good but when it did, It was very much worth reading. I was givin this book so I did not rent or buy it, but If I had bought it I would probably as for a refund so dont waist your money on it here, check it out from the library first. Then If you like it come back.

This is a great book! It is the story of three girls, three boys and a stuffed octopus, who make-up a game called Egypt in the back yard of an old junk store.
They make sacrifices and hold ceremonies. A series of adventures then lead them to solving a murder mystery. My only criticism is it could have a little more drama. I highly recommend this book to kids in grades 2-5.

The Egypt Game
Sometimes things that you don't like to do turn out in a good way. That's what happened to April in the Egypt Game, written by Zilpha Snyder. April was a girl that lived in Hollywood with her mother, but her mother after years sent her to live with her grandmother. There she found friends and together they created the Egypt game. The Egypt game was the place where April, Toby, Ken, Marshall, Elizabeth, and Melanie had to be thereself's. In school they acted different. Like in all stories there was a problem, where they played the Egypt game was not their property. It was the property of a professor. The professor was spooky, they didn't knew him. Still the Egypt gang kept playing, but they knew someday they would have to live Egypt because the professor would discover them. In the end things turn out backwards.
In my opinion this is not a good book. I like the genre, realistic fiction, but the organization is not the best it could have. The problems come at the end, and at the beginning of the book it is boring. There are not problems, the characters are not mysterious and there are not mysteries. I like the books that first introduce and then after about 5 or 6 chapters the problems get introduced. In this book you have to wait until chapter 17 for the problems to happen. My recommendation is to the people that like all the action to come at the end, and the beginning to be really detailed.

I hated this book because it was just so boring! Some parts in this book were interesting. The only reason I read this book is because I had to. I would never recommend this book to anyone. On a scale of 1-10, this book would earn an one. I had a very hard time keeping my interest in this book. This book is a horrible book!

The book is awesome. If someone would ever make a movie, the book would be 1,000,000,000 times better. Now this book is about how 6 kids play an Egyptian game. The 6 kids play behind a shop. The book does have a murderer, but will someone find out who it is? That's it. I hope you like the book.

I got this book for my 8 year old son to read and as always, pre-read the first chapter before getting it. I got completely ingrossed in the book within the first few minutes and put off laundry and housekeeping to finish it (something I don't normally do with kids books)! The writing style is fantastic! I'm very picky about what my son reads at this point in his life because I want him to read books that are interesting enough to grab and hold his attention and not turn him away from reading for fun. This book is definately one of those!

It was a pretty good book and very imaginative, but I agree with a previous review: it contains alot of false god worshipping and other heathen stuff like that. Of course, it's just a game and all in good fun, right? All I'll say is, you have to decide. I just didn't really look at it too much. It's still a good read, though.

In my opinion, the Egypt game is a really creative and different book from the other books that i read because not many authors write about some kids creating an Egypt game. There are so many things the author can write about, and she writes about an Egypt game. The Egypt game is a book created by Zilpha Keatly Snyder. It is a realistic fiction genre. The book starts with a girl named April that moves from Hollywood to California. Her mother sent her to California because she had a lot of work to do in Hollywood and was an actress. She meets a lot of friends, and together they create the Egypt game. Soon, many things start to happen to the Egypt game that is causing problems.
In the beginning of the book is a disaster because the author doesn't give a good or bad image to the characters. The author doesn't start the problem in the beginning of the book, she starts in the middle almost end. I think that the author needed to start the problems and describing better the characters in the beginning of the book because if someone starts to read it, they would drop the book. In my opinion the book is bad. I recommend this book to people who likes everything at the end and not in the beginning. To people who like mystery books.

Well, I must disagree on the shallow part. I read this book back when I was in Jr. High as an Accelerated Reader project. This book caught my eye and so I read it. This book had me up late at night reading with anticpation of the next events! It was absolutely enthralling! I was unable to put it down until it was over. It brought out ideas in me....made me remember MY childhood when I lied imagining things like that....It was a wonderful book and I recommend it to anyone.

I think the Egypt Game is a very inspiring book because it makes you want to have a game of your own. It gives you ideas for your own game like wearing costumes, making gods, trying oracles, believing in spirits, playing in a very secret place, and keeping it all a secret is the most fun of all! This book is very mysterious and makes you want to keep reading for hours and hours and plus it inspires you to read other books. I think any child who is always bored, or loves reading mysterious books, or never likes doing anything should read this book. Like I said, "It's very inspiring!"

I think this was a great book! I'm 13 years old and I just finished reading this book on January 3, 2001. I thouroughly enjoyed this story. The author is truly gifted, and the way she words everything just makes the story come alive. I especially liked the way Zilpha Keatley Snyder described the characters and their personalities. It made me feel that I was right there, in that shed, watching the kids play the Egypt Game. The story couldn't be more realistic if I were in it. Her details are amazing, and I must say, this is now my favorite book. I hope to read more of Ms. Snyder's work in the future, starting with The Gypsy Game.

The Egypt Game
Imagine your mother being a super star, but imagen paying the consequences of fame. So now imagen having to go live with your grandmother forever! To not see what was your life back then and your growing up time! Now April (main character) is "fashion". She is a very high class girl but high class people always turned out to be the total opposite.
April meets this girl named Melanie who lives in the same apartment. They become best friends, and then they become best friends with another girl named Elizabeth. April and Melanie seem to see very pashion for some thing or place, Egypt.
So they become to lovers of Egypt and they invent a game called Egypt. And at first the members of the Egypt Game are only April, Melanie, and Marshall (Melanie's little brother), but then things start to change and so on.
The books author is called Zilpha K. Shyder.Form my view she is a very bad auther. She gives to many un important details and she doesn't have good word choice. I think that this book doesn't have a good lead to the story. For me the character dosen't have a mystery in the begging so it dose not have a mission impossible to solve to get to the next level. I would say that kids will actually hate this book, to be honest.

The Egypt Game is a story about 6 kids who decide it would be fun to pretend that they are magical Egyptians. They think all is well, until terror
strikes out in egypt . Will egypt be able to survive? Well, to find out you would have to read the book, which I don't recommend. Unless, you like reading boring books. At first, it ws slow, and I thought it would get better.
It didn't. This book is not good at all. Don't spend your time and money on this book. DON'T READ THIS BOOK!!!!!

This was one of my childhood favourites many years ago. I can't say I remember the story well now, but I still remember the ravenous way I read all of Snyder's books as a child, the way I hunted bookstores on every vacation for her books, and the way this one (along with The Velvet Room) was my favourite. I remember the feeling of sharing a secret with the characters, and the magic of their game. And I've been interested in Ancient Egypt ever since.

The Egypt Game is about six kids who live in an apartment in California. There's April, Melanie, Elizabeth, Marshall, Ken, and Toby. The apartment is called the Casa Rosada. They play a game called The Egypt Game.
There is a professor who stalks them, but they don't know it. They are suspicious about him. They play in a shed in the Professor's storage yard. They do rituals and stuff like that.
I would not recommend this book. It was okay, but I wasn't impressed. I do not really like the Egyptian theme.

I reccomend this book to anyone who has a little imagination. It seem a little young actually for a 12 year old...but I still read it and absolutally loved it. I am on my way through the sequal the Gypsy Game. The only party that I was dissapointed with was the pictures...they were not drawn well and spoiled the imagination part. All the Characters of the egypt game are characterized, original, and wonderful. Please read this book.

This book begins with April moving in with Melanie, and they begin to play The Egypt Game in the Professor's back yard. They call the backyard the temple and they have two altars, one to Isis and one to Set. Eventually there are six children involved. It is exciting because you don't know who is the murderer, though the police suspect the professor. So this is a mystery story that is really gripping.

This is a very good book. There is only one problem. The author keeps on doing flash backs. Other than that the author made it very suspensful. These 6 kids stumble upon the magic of ancient Egypt. After a kid gets murdered they can't return to the land of Egypt. Then when they return to Egypt they make a sacrifice to Set the god of evil. Then one of Egyptians get injured. Then the person whyo owns the place where they play gives them keys to Egypt.

The Egypt game is really excellent. My classmates think it was bad, but I think it was great! the book could use a picture of the alliigator stone; the pictures were good nonetheless. This book is about April. April's mother is a movie star and cannot take care of April full time so April is sent to live with her grandmother. She meets Melaine and Elizabeth.April and Melaine have a common like , or what we would call today an obsession, with Egypt. Together they meet Elizabeth and start a game about acient Egypt. They make a throne to Ra and have sacraficial offerings . They have ceramonies at which you ask the Oricle a question. The only good part in this book is the end. There is at most one whole page of action.I would like to know where the conflict is in this book.April and Melaine make a game cause they both like Egypt.... There is little to know conflict in this book. There is no problem and therefor there are no ways to go about solving it.This book looked very interesting at first glance. It has basically nothing to do with Egypt. It could have been a much better book perhaps if the children found a way to travel back in time to ancient Egypt and had to get back to the present time. Anyone who believes children will like this book is mistaken.Thos was a horribly written waste of paper with no action what so ever. This book has about the amount of action as a bowl of oatemal. And the books ends by the friends deciding not to play the Egypt game anymore but by April asking Melaine what she knows about Gypsys leading to an equally boring book know as The Gypsy Game...

Aside from this being a very interesting book, I like it because Ms. Snyder has a realistic understanding of how kids would react to wierd things going on: tell (In a safe place of course) stories of other wierd things that happened in connection with the incident.

I had to do a book report, so my friend recomended this book to me. I started reading it and it was pretty interesting. Then, all of a sudden, I couldn't put it down. The author has a talent of skipping the uninteresting parts and going right to the interesting. The plot is never routine and the charecters are hard not to love. It's basicly about some kids who band together to make a realistic Egypt. It seems like just some kids play game, but it turns into a way of life for the children.

Are negative stars allowed? If so, I would give it a -*. I truly haven't read anything worse. Basically, the story is about a group of young freaks who sit around an abandoned lot worshiping the Egyptian gods. I would give away the ending, but it doesn't really have one-just the vague promise (threat?) of a sequel about gypsies. I admit that I and a group of thirty others were forced to read it, and we all hated it. I have liked school books before, for instance, Seth of the Lion People is a great book. This, however, is simply award-winning idiocy. If you like it, go ahead and read it. If not, don't expect it to get better.
Also, the last reviewer was correct. My teacher at the time had heard of people reading the book and then making strange sacrifices and such. Just don't take the book seriously and it won't mess you up, however.

My kids were bored to death. Had it not been a gift, I would have stopped reading it to them. Then when there is one bit of action, arresting the criminal, it isn't explained. I finished that chapter and I looked at my kids and said What just happened?
Did I mention we were all bored to death while I read this book? I read faster to get the book finished. And of course it was long. Maybe to read it by yourself it would be fine. But it is NOT A READ ALOUD.
Did I meantion it is boring? Just want you to know not to get sucked into it like I did. I had never heard of the book until it was reprinted. Sad to say but I wish I was still ignorant of it all.
As much as all of those who enjoy this book are sad that some don't like it, please respect our opinions. Also, I don't see why all the reviewers are portrayed as being children, so I definitely am letting people know that a 40 year old teacher was not happy with this book and her group of 9 year olds concur.

This book isn't a book I would perfer to read again, because at the begining it is really boring and finally at the end of the book it gets good. It's about a girl named April who moves to California and meets Melanie and Marshall. They go to an old lot and make a place they call Egypt. They meet two mew members, Ken and Toby, and let them join. They get to keep the yard afther a accident and they continue the game of Egypt would have changed the begining so it would be more excited.

I did not like this book at all it was so boring and it did not make sense I wish the author could come up with more mysterious ideas and shocking and finally something better.
Ps I only put 1 star because it won't let me out none

My mature but sensitive 8 year old daughter found the book fairly good until the mention of a child's disappearance and murder. While the incident is not central to the story, it was disturbing enough that my daughter wants nothing more to do with the book....

If you like books about adventure and suspense, you should read this book. It starts out with a girl named April Hall who moves in the Casa Rosada with her grandmother. She meets this girl named Melanie Ross. They have almost nothing in common except for the fact they both like to learn about Egypt. So they decide to make up a game called The Egypt Game. I recommend this book to kids and adults of all ages. This is a great book.

I originally bought this book when I was a very young girl, almost 15 years ago, from a thrift shop. It was my favorite book. I recently went on a trip down memory lane by taking a look at all my favorite childhood books. This book is just as magical now for me as it was when I was young. It's a great book.

The book wasn't very exciting,I think, until they started asking the Thoth (the owl) questions. Then I got interested. I liked the charcters and their personalties but, it was hard to believe that Marshall was 4 years old. Over all I liked the book but, it wasn't one of my favories.

The Egypt Game is a great book for all book lovers. The Egypt Game is a suspensful book about 6 kids who start something called the Egypt Game. Things like a unknown writer and a killer roaming the city is awesome. This book was great!! They start holding ceremonies and start dressing up as Egyptians

I thought the book lacked some excitement.I liked somethings about it like the suspense. The characters were pretty cool like the professor and security.Ithought over all it was a pretty good book in parts.Other parts were pretty bad though.

This book caught my attention because we are studying Egypt. Instead of an insightful, thought provoking fiction, it proved to be a negative inticement for young readers. Children, be careful what you read and what you watch. Being intrigued by the darker side of things is understandable, but it is dangerous and unwise. My concern is that our society is embracing what my generation would never have tolerated. It is not the book itself that is so scarry, but it is that parents are allowing their children to absorb the ideas, values, and practices of books like Harry Potter and The Egypt Game. We must set a higher standard for our children. If no goal is set, it is sure to be obtained.

A detail-rich story about children who become deeply involved in a role-playing game. April, the main character, is almost an orphan. Her father is dead and her mother, a Hollywood actress, has parked her indefinitely with Grandma. April dislikes living with her grandmother and believes her mother will soon retrieve her. She does not fit in at her new school because she puts on airs and brags about her Hollywood connections. Things get better when she meets neighbor Melanie, who shares her love of "imagining games." They decide to research ancient Egypt, and soon create a "temple" in the cluttered yard of a junk shop. Other kids become involved; they invent Egyptian names for themselves and create their own hieroglyphs. Like teenagers who play Dungeons & Dragons, they become immersed in their harmless fantasy world. However, the children are secretly watched each day by the Professor, the mysterious owner of the shop.
Then, tragedy strikes the neighborhood when a child is abducted and killed. Everything changes overnight. Kids are not allowed out unsupervised, and the Professor is suspected. The kids bring their game indoors, making costumes and developing complicated rituals for later use at the temple. During this time, April slowly becomes aware that her mother has abandoned her. One night, April makes a quick visit to the junkyard to retrieve a lost book. Suddenly, she is seized by the murderer. But someone comes to her aid... it is the Professor! April is saved!
Pre-teen girls, especially the nerdy kind, would probably like this book, but I found it tedious. The endless details about Egyptian culture filtered through a novel just didn't work for me. Also, the plot seems derivative. In Rumer Godden's An Episode of Sparrows from 1956, the main character is left by her actress mother with a family friend. She develops a fantasy world with neighborhood kids, theirs centering on a garden rather than a junkyard. The character of the Professor strongly recalls Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. Like the Professor, Boo sits inside a house and watches neighborhood children play. When two of them are attacked one dark night, it is Boo who foils the murder attempt. And finally, the idea of an orphan as the main character of a book is extremely common in children's literature: David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, David Balfour (from Kidnapped), Anne Shirley (i.e. Anne of Green Gables), and Pippi Longstocking all preceded April, and many others followed (Harry Potter anyone?). The effect here, because the plot is not original, is to make one think, "Not again."
The book was published in 1967 and won a Newbery Honor, but for the reprinted edition 20 years later, the author changed some terminology. Melanie is now described as "African American," but the term was not invented until the 1980s, so in the original version she was probably described as "Negro" or "colored." I am opposed to such tinkering when fiction is reprinted, especially when, as in this case, it is not acknowledged, but the changes here do not diminish the story.
The illustrations by Alton Raible complement the text well; the best one shows the invented Egyptian names ("Aida" is one) and corresponding hieroglyphs.

Teacher notes: Fun book, but the high lexile level and immature topic matter make it perhaps a good book for an advanced elementary student.
Student notes:
Plot development
I think that this book is sophisticated piece literature. It has a very substantial story and it’s kind of surprising. It has a very good moral behind it. The story starts out as a Hollywood girl named April moves to the Casa Rosada in California. She meets a girl called Melanie who has totally different interests and opinions. I think the author chose that the two main characters so to make the story exciting. I think in the story there are two climaxes. One of the climax is when they discover that there is a murder in the neighborhood, because from then on, the story is about the murderer. The second one is when the Murderer grabs April, the rest is then about who the murderer is which is the most exciting part. The resolution in the story is when the murderer gets caught and everything is back to normal except should they go back to playing the game?
Setting
The Egypt Game takes place in a large university town in California, on a street called Orchard Ave. There are two main settings on this street; in Casa Rosada, a spanish-themed apartment and the professor’s abandoned backyard. I think that the fact that this novel takes place in a university town is important. This is because it connects to the background of the professor, this is because he used to work there. I personally do not think that this novel should take place in America because it is so “mainstream”, but maybe this is because April’s mother, Dorothea, is a hollywood star. However, April’s snotty character would have been more prominent if the setting was a place like an English or New Zealand town.
Character development
April: I really like the characters of April because she has an Hollywood act. She also shows offs. I think The author could have explained more about April and how she relates to Egypt Game.
Elizabeth: I feel we needed more information about Elisabeth. The author described what she looked like and what she did, but I feel he should have made her interact with more stuff. She should have been in the story more
Stockboy: Stock boy: When i found out that he was the murderer i was really shocked. First i thought it was Mr. Schmitts or the professor that committed the murder. Since i was that shocked, for now on i'll call him shockboy!!!
Toby: I think the author made a good decision about creating the character Toby. He was very entertaining.
Professor: I think Author could give more details about.
Theme
The theme of this book was Relationships. I think that this choice of a theme is good for this book because this book is about an imagination game and when you imagine things you need to interact with other people which is how most relationships develop.. It is good that the characters are children because if they were adults the relationships that emerged from the book would be very different than the ones written in the book because children have vivid imaginations and can be more comfortable around each other then grownups or college students. An alternative theme for this book could be imagination or creativity because the Egypt Game is a game based on purely imagination. I recommend this book (judging by its theme) for an 2nd-4th grader. The words are a little big, they fit in the 4-5th grade category. Overall this book’s theme is a good choice.
The theme of relationships is a very exciting theme for a book, has some emotional moments, but a lot of fun moments! You can also learn life stories from them. The Egypt Game is a very exciting, thrilling book! I feel as if it is a big adventure. The relationships in the Egypt Game are friendships you would have never thought of! When I saw the cove of the Egypt Game, I did not think that it would be about 6 children playing in a professors backyard! That was caused because of friendship! I love how Zilpha Keatley Snyder chooses relationships as a theme - It makes it interesting…
I recommend the book for advanced second graders, third or fourth graders.

The book would only interest a third grader at the most because of the word choice. I would give it a 1 out of 100! The book needs more puzzlers, it needs to make you think a lot. The Eye witness book "Egypt" is more informative on the subject of Egypt.

Does anyone else think it's completely inappropriate to have a "little girl" murdered off in a children's book? And a Newbery winner at that? I'm about halfway through this book (the audio version) with my kids (7 & 8) when we hear about a little girl that's been murdered and her body found in a salt marsh - all before I could get to the pause button on the CD player. Now we have to live with this image. We've been thoroughly enjoying the story until now, but now I'm distrustful about this author's judgement. I think we'll bring it back to the library...

I LOVE Egyptian mythology, but this seems silly and wrong. They play in a lot behind some stores but what depth is there? None. I personally read this for schoolwork (Teenage reviewer) and I didn't connect with it. The try to dig deep and have meaning is wasted on some one dimensional characters playing around with nothing interesting happening throughout the book. I ask myself why this book has a medal. It is just the point of view of Mythology to some kids. Please, if you are not being forced to read this, leave this page or be severely disappointed.

A few years back I read this for literature circles in my class. There was maybe 4 or 5 other kids in my group. We all were completely lost and could not stand to read the book any longer! Our teacher ended up just letting us stop because it was so horrible! I would never recommend this book! It is the most confusing thing, and I really found the plot itself kind of dumb.

I skipped around and read a few chapters of this book, but based on what I've read, I would not recommend this book. The children in the book are disobedient to their parents. They roll their eyes at their parents rules and do not honor their parents. These negative attitudes towards parents were not portrayed in a negative light in any of the chapters that I read. Furthermore, the kids in the book are summoned by Egyptian gods, looking for omens, sacrificing to gods, and the like. At the very least, this goes against the Ten Commandments, "You shall have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3, ESV). Also, while not portrayed in a positive light, murder is a big part of the storyline. The Bible says: "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4:8, ESV). This book does not seem to fit these guidelines.
