My first grade boy likes these books, hence the three stars. We are on book #3. But I'm not sure if I will buy any more. I find them a little dark. The main character has a lot of problems with friendships and bullying. I have no problem with that being a theme in the book, as it's certainly something that most children in elementary or middle school will have to deal with. After all, you aren't going to sell many books if you call them Diary of a Wimpy Kid... Oh, wait. I guess you can. But when you buy a book about ninjas you kinda expect it to be about high adventure. The ninja theme is very secondary; I feel that the publishers added it as a side story just to market the books.
Here's one example of a conflict in this book: the main character writes a love note to a girl in his class, and the mean kids get ahold of it, copy it, and paste it up all over the school. The boy and the girl are both teased and humiliated. Oh, and once in a while someone puts on a ninja outfit for a few minutes. If you want to buy your child a book about navigating the difficulties of middle school, then by all means get this book. But if you are looking for a ninja book then you may feel misled.

This series of books just gets better and better. The humour is so suited to 9-11 year olds, and my class enjoy every minute of it. When one book is finished, I am pressured to get the next in the series. This one will be no different!
