A great start that falls apart in believability as the story progresses. I started off liking Nix and ended up not caring for her. The truth about her marriage is just ridiculous and the action becomes repetitive without furthering the storyline. It was kind of a downer to read and I have lost interest in this series.

Nix, a legendary mob family enforcer has been off the grid for over a decade. She is brought back into the game when the family and home that she loves is violently taken from her. It is now a war against her mob family for their part in starting it.

It took the first 6-7 chapters before I warmed up to the book. The foreshadowing was clumsy and made me think this book would be too depressing for me. I'm glad I held on though, the complexities smoothed out as the assassin, Phoenix goes out for revenge. The book was good enough I will read the second one!
For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, Book 5) :: Wounded (Kindle Single) (Anita Blake - Vampire Hunter) :: Tales from the Hollows and Beyond (A Hollows Novella) :: Every Which Way But Dead (The Hollows, Book 3) :: Black Magic Sanction (The Hollows Book 8)

Fury of a Phoenix is amazing. Phoenix is a kick ass character. She is strong independant and headstrong. She and her little group she has picked up along the way are an unlikely group, but together a force to be reckoned with. Full of strong charcter's and non stop action. It is definitely a series to read.

Shannon Mayer always has a good way to tell a story. The lead character rocks. She’s headstrong and randomly funny. Kicking butt and taking names. You suspect at the beginnings hat you find out to be truth at the end but have to hang on to be sure you are right.

While I loved Shannon Mayer's Sensor Series and normally can't put the book down. I was very disappointed with this one. The story was slow, no real plot but vengeance. Not much character development and the other characters were non existent. She normally writes such great stories that the additional characters add to. This story was just flat and I didn't really care about the bad guys or the good guys.

I do not usually read this type of book but I do like Shannon Mayer's works. It is an interesting violent story about revenge. The story is well written and the characters are well developed. The ending is a twist and exactly what I expected. If you do not mind violence, anger, and hate it is the story for you to read.

Ms. Mayer has once again written a well crafted exciting new series. I was hooked from the first page. Nix has it all a family, a home, and a job she enjoys. Until her dark past reaches out and takes it from her. Now Phoenix is furious and out to kill the ones who took it all from her. I am very excited for the next one.

I love Shannon Mayer for the complexity of the characters and stories she weaves so this new book was on my auto-buy list. I was disappointed to end up getting a literary equivalent of John Wick- quite a few parallels story-wide and about as much depth as the movie. Won't be continuing with this series, but will keep an eye open for any other projects by the author.

This is an interesting book.
It did take little bit to get I to but once I started reading and getting to know the characters it all came alive. Phoenix is bent on revenge against her so called family and I am loving how she is going about it

Shannon does it again. This is a great story that shows a mothers love and revenge. She was leading a peaceful life where she left her old life but when someone takes her family from her she shows just how not to mess with a Phoenix. For through the ashes the Phoenix shall rise! Go read it! You won't be disappointed.

I wasn't sure if I was going to care for Nix but I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those characters that grow on you. I had some issues with the first third of the book, the characters seemed very one dimensional and cartoonish. However I was glad I read through to end because Nix at least started to develop a bit more depth. I am looking forward to the next installment.

WOW. This book blew me away! I haven't read a book by Mayer in a long time, but goodness she still knows how to tell a kick ass story! I loved the heroine, her rough edges, what made her tick! I look forward to seeing more revealed in the next book and seeing what'll happen, especially with that ending!

I’m a huge fan of this author, always have been and I am never let down when it comes to her stories. This is a gripping urban fantasy full of pain, revenge and ultimately of a love and bond that is mother and son. It’s a roller coaster and I look forward to more.

Very fast paced, but still gives a good backstory on the main character. She's very likable, for an assassin.
Not a lot of magic but a little bit thrown in here and there and seems to be a bit of an aside to the main story.
Overall a very enjoyable read, looking forward to the next book in the series.

I ‘m reading all of the author’s books in this series. It’s extremely hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also proves top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories.

Great book, if you like a fast paced adventure, supernatural enemies (known as abnormals) and a clever, tough, female assassin, set on revenge, with a bit of blood and gore on the way. Loved this first book in the series and looking forward for more to come.

For me this book started out really slow, I actually put it down a few times, and wasn't going to finish it, however I'm glad I finally did. About halfway through it really picked up and I couldn't wait to read more. I hope that the next book continues the momentum this one ended with.

This was kind of a slow starter for me, but I liked the story. I love Shannon Mayer and have read almost everything she has ever written. I love her writing style and am excited to see where this story takes me.

It will keep you on the edge of your seat. Can't wait for book #2 in this series. I have read many of this author's books and this one is right up there with the Riley Adamson series which I could not get enough of.

Very intense and heartbreaking at times. The action does not stop and I found myself reading faster just to see what Nix did next. Has a cliff hanger but you knew it was coming. Cannot wait for book 2.

Interesting new series. There's a lot to like about it; the setup and characters are interesting. Dialogue is a tad weak and I'm not sure the talking inanimate objects make sense, Maybe it will work out in the next book.

I am a fan of Shannon Mayer. Having stated that, I have enjoyed the start of this new series immensely. I truly carried my kindle around the house as I was reading. This series is shaping up to be more complex and intense than I expected. I hate having to wait for the next book however. I know I will re-read this when the next book comes out.

This book was good, but parts of it drug on. It seemed that the author has almost too many “hidden” aspects of the book to be able to link them all together seamlessly and without forgetting some of them. Overall an ok read, though I personally dislike cliffhangers.

This was a great read. It has lots of action, it's well written with few typos, and the story flows smoothly. The only flaw is that it must require all 3 books to complete the story. Because it was so much fun, I will read them.

I finished the Rylee Adamson books and decided to give another of Shannon Meyer's books a try. I'm glad I did. Though a bit harder of a character lead in this series, the story grabs you from the beginning. I can't wait to read book 2 next month.

I liked the characters she has a lot of potential but I'm not interested in how the story line is going. One book was good, two? Okay, but by the looks of it three? Nah. The story is not that interesting.

This story was nearly perfect. Well developed characters and story line with elements of fantasy expertly woven into a thrill ride of a story. Absolutely brilliant. And the narrator for the audio-book is flawless.

The first chapter left me in tears, and ready to go on this adventure with Nix. Shannon Mayer has created a truly magnificent woman and sent her on a no holds barred journey to avenge the deaths of her family. I felt each step right along with her. I can't wait for the next book to see where the story leads Nix, and what she may discover!! S.H.

I don't typically review books, however this book was fantastic, and a lovely breath of fresh air after reading many in the genre that were starting to all feel like iterations of each other. Fast paced, well written and less predictable than most, it is well worth the read and now I'm on to read the second!

I voluntarily received an ARC of Fury of a Phoenix in exchange for an honest review.  And for the first time, I found it hard to get through one of Shannon’s books.  Even though the story starts out tragic and the story is built so you want to be on Nix’s side I really wasn’t.  Nix never became that character that I could love, like so many others that Shannon has written.  She is a killer, without any other redeeming qualities than she loved her husband and son.   Then you add in the talking guns and this book almost got a DNF.

I normally can finish one of Shannon’s books in a day maybe two, I struggled with this one.  The story was drawn out with too many unnecessary details, and at when Nix was struggling with her rage and trying to recover it just became excessively repetitive.  Once the story finally got moving say around 60/70% I was more engaged and it truly felt like one of Shannon’s books, with the nonstop action really picking up around 80%.

The problem with this story is Nix isn’t likable, she doesn’t really have a personality other than a cold-blooded killer out for revenge.  That isn’t enough to make me love and care about her.  Even though I didn’t like the talking gun part of the story, her guns had more personality than she did.

I am no longer in Shannon’s ARC group, so I doubt I will finish with this series, Nix just isn’t a character I care enough about to want to know how the story ends.  I am giving Fury of a Phoenix 2.5  Boundless Stars, this could have been so much better, but I did like it more towards the end.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I wanted to love it; I read it straight through. However, I didn't like the main character, who was basically a former mob enforcer. She's driven by rage with two magical guns who (yes, "who" is correct here) egg her on. I really liked the dog, though and there was a hook at the end that got me to pre-order the next book in the series.

I think part of my problem is that I got dropped into an urban fantasy world that didn't get much explaining. Are "abnormals" good/bad/just normal folks with magic/something else? What is their status in the world?

I did like some of the twists and turns, but the problem with first-person narrative is that the reader is as surprised as the character at those twists. I prefer to have some foreshadowing, though.

If you are a fan of the author, you will probably like the book. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, you might try it out. I suspect the next book will be better.

This book really deserves 3.5 stars; I gave it 4 because I liked it enough to get the sequel.

A killer hidden for more than a decade comes back for one simple thing, revenge. Even though the stories are nothing other than revenge, I couldn’t help but think of the movie John Wick. As like many other Mayer books, Fury of a Phoenix is non-stop action. The person you should hate, a killer, you will actually be rooting for. A first for me! I’m looking forward to book 2.

"He didn't know all my story. He didn't know who I really am. He thought I was my sister". Another enthralling start to what I'm sure will be an amazing new series by the fantastic Shannon Mayer.

This book brings a mothers worst fears to life, I laughed and I ugly cried with Nix as she embraced the devastation that had destroyed her world. The predator has been awakened, they made her into their greatest weapon but now she is coming for them. Nix hid from her past but it's caught up with her and it's those she holds dear that pay the ultimate price.

Nix is hard faced, butt kicking and totally brutal in her single minded hell bent need for revenge. Stay out of her way or you could be her next victim.

Shannon smashed it out of the park with this book I love it. It's dark, gritty and completely bad assed. Awesome

This book was not what I was expecting and I almost didn't keep reading it. I'm so glad I did, because it was awesome! This wasn't what I expected after reading your other series, but once you get going reading this book you just can't stop. Definitely a different a different take on urban fantasy. So full of surprises and everything was new and fresh, not the same old tired super naturals. If you're on the fence about this book, don't be. Go read this one and be surprised and hooked on another series. Excellent job Ms. Mayer on another successful new series. I can't wait for the next one!

Update: After an hour later, I still can't get this book off my mind. It definitely is one of those books that after you read it you'll still be thinking about it and have a hard read picking up another to book to read for awhile.

This new series had very big shoes to fill, following the Rylee Adamson and Elemental series but it has held it's own!

Fury of the Phoenix is definitely much darker than previous Shannon Mayer books and has a very different feel to it.

Running from her past, Nix has managed to start a new life, married with a son who she adores and understands her so well.

In the blink of an eye, everything changes and now she returns to her past with a vendetta that she would gladly give her life to see to fruition.

I can't wait to see what Nix has in store for the Romano family next!

I have also purchased my copy on the store AU.

Hell hath no fury like a mother whose child has been ripped away from her. Add in Phoenix, now Nix's past of being an assassin, and she will dole out the vengeance to those who dared take her husband and son away from her.

I always love every Shannon Mayer book and this was no exception. Nice bit of a twist at the end. I kind of had a feeling that this surprise might be the case but it was still awesome to read! Gotta move on to the next one! If you haven't picked up this book yet- what are u waiting for???

I truly connected to this book and found Nix to be my soul sister. She is kick ass and family means everything to her. The way she is just resonates in me and is who I would be if I were placed in her situation. This is first in the series and has truly touched me. Full of action, twists and turns and gets you emotionally involved. sad it's only a trilogy as I love Nix. Can not wait to read the second book when it comes out to find out what will happen next.

If youraise a child in abuse then train her to be an assassin why are you suprised when she turns on you? That's the $64 G questioning that begs to be asked.
Its obvious that Luca Romano has become a man waiting on deliverance be it to safety or to hell.
Great read!
