An excellent book. Well documented with medical studies. The recommended magnesium chelate is also available at the store.com for a very reasonable price. Dr. Cohen explains how magnesium actually relaxes the blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. An easy read.

This is the second book I've read by this author. He seems to be a kind and careful man.

So this book about magnesium which could have simply been a damning criticism of widespread medical incompetence and of the cynicism of pharmaceutical companies was not.

He makes the case for the wider use of magnesium in a measured and thoughtful way.

Given the cheapness and safety of taking extra magnesium, it should be taken by everybody with muscle cramps or high (and high-ish) blood pressure.

I suffered for 18 months from muscle cramps and was first treated for a Vitamin D deficiency, but on its own this was not effective. After a month on magnesium oxide the carmps have gone.

My wife had similar cramps, and also has high blood pressure and she, too, is cured of cramps and has lowered her bloof pressure.

Please read this book - it is very convincing and helpful.

I learned a few things from reading this book, though I am more interested in the general benefits of magnesium, rather than simply its effect on BP. However, the author is an MD and on a teaching staff, so he seems good at explaining his specific point of view.

The author gives some unconventional thoughts on magnesium and lots of supportive evidence, that taking more magnesium can give us better health even beyond the high blood pressure issue. I have been taking more magnesium for several months. I believe it might be helping me. My daughter loaned me her book, but I enjoyed the helpful information enough, I wanted a copy for myself.

If the author had not included an admonition to see your doctor on every page, this short book would have gotten a five star rating form me. Seems all necessary information about magnesium deficiency as a very common cause of high blood pressure, and supplimentation as always a beneficial treatment (the information) is there; and in very readable form.
- Very easy to use automated blood pressure monitors sell for an average price of fifty dollars (Price range at Walmart is from around $25.oo to $90.oo, get the job done, and are used in more or less half of doctors offices.
- All allopathic doctors (most doctors of medicine) are taught throughout medical school to totally disrespect all of alternative health.
- Your doctors business, his only business relative to high blood pressure, is to to sell expensive tests, and even more by expensive perscription only drugs. His education rarely goes beyond these perscripting drugs and the tests that help sell them.
- These perscription drugs have such prevalent and hard to tollerate side effects that half of hypertensives give up on them withen the first year.
One of these side effects is seems to be higher blood pressure once you quit. Another side effect experienced by many, if not most, patients is dizzy spells, don't fall down stairs, etc. Some people find that their blood pressure meds make exercise impossible. To me PART OF THE DEFINITION OF BY PERSCRIPTION ONLY IS GUARANTEED TOXIC OR OTHERWISE DANGEROUS. Once again, your doctors BUSINESS is selling these pills.
- Bottom line, your best bet, if you have essential hypertension, is to handle it yourself with weight loss, nutritional suppliments, natural herbals, and magnesium supplimentation (by mouth and topical).

My blood pressure has never been high, however, when I am tense or stressed, it goes up to about 175/80 yet goes down after I calm down. And I have also suffered from tension headaches as well as the blood pressure problem. So after reading this book, I followed the advice and began eating more foods with magnesium and also taking magnesium supplements (along with calicum and potassium) and my headaches are gone and my blood pressure is 120/70 and on a steady basis.

***Note that high blood pressure or headaches should never be taken lightly...these can be caused by a serious disorder. Be sure that you see a doctor and follow his or her advice.
For me, before reading this book, I went to see my doctor who said my headaches were stress related. Then I discovered thus book and stepped up my magnesium...it worked for me.

Dr. Cohen lays it on the line. He even mentions dosing and preferred forms of magnesium. While it might seem confusing comparing different magnesium salts, I suggest you use what's available. The soluble versions (chloride, sulfate, glycinate, etc). are far superior to the oxides - chalk, basically.

Very informative. Dr. Cohen's book gives a better understanding of why magnesium is so important for mineral balance, particularly if diuretics are being used.
His information is very helpful on applying proper diet and supplements in addition.

This book comprehensively details the importance of magnesium, and gives specific instructions on how to implement magnesium into your diet and tell if it's working for you.

This book works well as something to give your doctor to open up a discussion as to whether magnesium supplementation is right for you, or as something you can read on your own and put into practice independent from a physician. Highly recommended!

Diagnosed with high blood pressure? This is a MUST READ before you start medication. This book (like many others) highlights the important connection between magnesium, potassium, and calcium deficiencies in our diets and high blood pressure. Drugs are NOT necessarily the only, or the best, way to treat high blood pressure. This book will explain why, and what you should ask your doctor. For someone with pre-hypertension, this may show you safer ways to manage your blood pressure with changes to your diet and lifestyle (these will actually lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, rather than cover the symptoms with drugs without fixing the underlying cause).

I know the idea behind the book is correct. Magnesium does have an effect on blood pressure. This book did not have enough detail as to how to raise one's magnesium levels and how to facilitate lowering blood pressure. When I got to the end, I was not a bit more enlightened than I had been on the first page. I have learned more following the Magnesium Advocacy group on facebook than I did from this book.

I was impressed with the information I got from this book regarding the properties of magnesium I did not know.

Thanks to this book my blood pressure is normal again!!!!

Thank you Dr Cohen,

From it's title, it sounds like it promises that magnesium will cure most hypertension. But, it actually says that magnesium is generally a good adjunct to helping lower blood pressure. That it might be enough by itself for some people. And if it is not enough by itself then it can possibly be a part of a total naturalist solution. And if you still need drugs, using magnesium might at least help decrease the amount of prescription meds.

Dr. Sinatra's books are more comprehensive, better books. In my opinion. I wouldn't waste my time with this book if I were you.

I liked the information presented in this book, however, I contacted the author (as suggested) and found little he could do to support my concerns. As such, I wonder how the information was generated and what measures can assist the public with utilization of the recommendations provided. Thanks for the enlightenment on my path to self-empowerment.

Interesting, helpful, but nothing I had not heard or read before. More people do need to know about the importance of magnesium, however this author left me wanting for more information. It was a bit too thin, almost like a "booklet", and could have been a little meatier.

I am so glad to read a book loaded with so much information about the benefits of magnesium. I have high blood pressure and my doctor put me on a drug for cholesterol . The side effects were very uncomfortable so I quit taking them. During this time I began having irregular heartbeat. My doctor recommended magnesium and the problem was solved. I was so afraid she was going to put me on another drug. Fortunately she didn't. I have been on magnesium over 4 years now and the magnesium is still working. Great book , any one with high blood pressure should read this book.

I recall one reviewer saying ,some statements are repetitious.I agree but perhaps,Dr.Cohen, wants to drive his point. It's a short informative booklet for those who wants to validate Magnesium as a supplement,so basically for layman and certainly, for those who are in the medical field that just wants a synopsis of Mg.I recommend it as a great start if you are looking for info regarding Mg and don't have the time or just don't want to go indepth as to why Mg is good for BP mgmt. For people who wants to study this electrolyte,I recommend The Magnesium Factor by Dr.Seelig.I'm sure their are other informative books out there for Mg but these are the books that I have and read.Overall,The Mg Solution is a good read.I'm in the medical field ,I deal with folks who are basically poly pharmacy and it's scary to think of these drugs sideeffects.Mg works for me ,I use to be 125/80 and above, now my average is below ,consistently. This statement is not intended as a recommend.to take Mg without talking to your dr.

Dr. Cohen's book does the public a great service in discussing the importance of magnesium for maintaining a healthy level of blood pressure. However, as Dr. Carolyn Dean discusses in her very important book The Miracle of Magnesium, magnesium deficiency is a significant factor -- often the major factor -- in many other severe illnesses including heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, asthma, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, fatigue, diabetes, migraines and other headaches, osteoporosis, insomnia, and most cases of muscular problems. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium to some degree and many are severely deficient. Because magnesium deficiency is largely overlooked by orthodox medical doctors, millions of Americans suffer needlessly from the foregoing ailments or are having their symptoms treated with expensive drugs (which often have unpleasant or dangerous side effects) when they could be cured with magnesium supplementation. While I recommend Dr. Cohen's book, I recommend even more highly Dr. Dean's more comprehensive (but easy to read) book The Miracle of Magnesium. Getting the right level of magnesium can not only mitigate a large number of seemingly-unrelated ailments, it may save your life.

This useful little book is in the same series as one I reviewed earlier (The Magnesium Solution for Migraine Sufferers).
High blood pressure accounts for more trips to the doctor than any other condition. Almost always, patients are put on prescription drugs. As Dr. Peter Galgut said so eloquently on [...] ALL drugs have side-effects. [This is no small matter: side effects to prescription drugs in hospital are the 4th leading cause of death in the United States, according to Lazarou in JAMA. 1998 Apr 15;279(15):1200-5.]
Moreover, doctors do not like to admit that, using drugs to lower blood pressure, does not reduce your risk of cardio-vascular disease to the same extent of someone who has the lower level naturally. In other words, drugs are dealing with the symptoms not the cause.
Dr. Cohen looks at one probable underlying cause of high blood pressure -- magnesium deficiency. He describes how up to 75% of Americans are deficient in this mineral and as a consequence are sick in many ways. Doctors are widely ignorant about magnesium and tend to think of drugs as first resort rather than last.
Dr. Cohen explains how magnesium is an essential micronutrient in maintaining suppleness in the walls of blood vessels. In magnesium deficiency, the vessels become stiffer and so do not absorb the blood pressure surges properly.
Dr. Cohen reviews many of the other lifestyle factors that are responsible for high blood pressure. These include obesity, lack of exercise, low fiber intake, salt, alcohol and smoking. However, even correcting these matters (particularly in black Americans) is not very effective; magnesium must be corrected too.
Dr. Cohen does not claim that fixing magnesium deficiency will "cure" high blood pressure. Rather it is usually an overlooked piece of the jigsaw in a pattern of factors to be corrected.
This eminently readable book has guidance on the types of magnesium available and how to find the right dose for you. As commented earlier, we should all be nervous of the aggressive side-effects of drugs.
The insights in this book offer a valuable avenue for high blood pressure sufferers to explore. Of course, as a nutritional anthropologist and author Deadly Harvest, I would say that taking pills -- even magnesium pills -- can only be a stop-gap measure. We should all be changing our eating habits so that we get ALL our nutrients from food. By feeding our bodies in the way that our bodies were designed by our ancient past, then all these food-induced lifestyle diseases (like high blood pressure) will disappear of their own accord.

Before reading this book I did not know that a normal test of blood magnesium means little. The system removes magnesium from the bones to maintain the required level in the blood. Thereby your blood level remains normal while your bones are weakened. I am not sure if my Dr is aware of this since he did the standard test of blood magnesium and said I was ok. Of course I may not understand this right. In any case I am increasing my Mag. intake via a Mag. powder. This is to see if my nightly severe leg cramps and generally "Uptight" feeling is relieved

.I hate to be my own Dr. but sometimes it helps to be informed.

A little "pocket book" the kind you would see at a grocery checkout.

But the data presented about this vital mineral magnesium most persons would have to locate and research the various books and articles the author has included in his bibliography to find.

The general public AND most doctors are unaware of the number of problems magnesium deficiency is currently causing us.

I wish everybody could read what this very qualified author says in this little book. I took his advice and it changed my life too.

Get it. Its very affordable and your health issues may take a turn for the better.

This small booklet has a big message: high blood pressure can be the result of magnesium deficiency, and most westerners are deficient in magnesium.

It is written by a doctor (MD) who cured his own vascular disease by supplementing with magenesium. After reviewing the scientific literature, he found a mountain of research to support his experience and wrote this booklet to get the word out to doctors and patients.

We are left wondering why--if magnesium is so effective at controlling hight blood pressure--is the mainstream medical community not recommending it to patients before offering blood pressure medication?

The booket gives recommendations on the type of magnesium to take, and the recommended supplementation amount.

Reading this book might help you escape the a prison sentence to a lifetime of medication.

Can't bring myself to finish this as it's dry reading. At least it's short. However, Within 10 pages, he verified something I wondered about, but NO DOCTOR has told me otherwise. I should be hospitalized for my blood pressure, I suppose. It's consistently 170/110-120. Unbelievable, right? The author pointed out that usually you have diuretics as part of the treatment. I had wondered about that myself. No one tells you to space them apart from other medications. Therefore, you're washing out your other medication at the same time you are taking it.. As I'm a disabled victim of Trump, I don't have insurance, so I no longer have medication issues. At least of that nature. So I can't say for sure that it works, but it certainly makes sense to me. I'm also taking magnesium for my acute asthma. If I start wheezing,I take it, it opens the bronchial tubes and I quit wheezing.I take it any way, but with asthma, you get these little sneak attacks also. I highly recommend you bear with it and read this book.

Magnesium is one of a handful of minerals that are important in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. However, the research saying that magnesium is the most important, or in and of itself vitally important, is shaky at best. This is an excerpt from highbloodpressure.about.com:

"The main problem is that none of the studies so far have looked at the effects of magnesium alone. Rather, they have focused on "diets rich in magnesium." As it turns out, a magnesium-rich diet consists of lots of fruits and vegetables, and usually includes fairly high levels of fiber and whole grains, and only small amounts of red meats. In other words, magnesium-rich diets tend to be good for you regardless of the magnesium they contain. To make matters more complicated, foods that are rich in magnesium also tend to contain high levels of potassium. Unlike magnesium, potassium - by itself - has been shown to provide beneficial effects for preventing and managing high blood pressure."

Here are the key points about magnesium: (a)Research shows that magnesium supplements are not effective in reducing blood pressure, (b) The only effective way to get magnesium into your system is through eating magnesium-rich foods, (c) most magnesium-rich foods also happen to be rich in potassium and calcium, which are vitally important in controlling hypertension.

I rated this book 3-stars because I disagree with any approach to controlling blood pressure that is one-dimensional. The approach I prefer is a holistic plan that takes not only magnesium into account, but addresses all the proven critical facets of controlling hypertension. Those include limiting sodium, increasing potassium, weight loss and other dietary/lifestyle changes. Hypertension has complex causes, and trying to treat it with a seemingly easy, one-dimension "cure" is not the best approach.

A thoughtful and insightful explanation on how various nutritional elements interact. Having taken magnesium for leg cramps for some time, have learned how to get maximum benefits with minor adjustments. Love this little book and recommend it to anyone who is serious about their health.

I can attest to the benefits of Magnesium for High Blood Pressure.
For the last several years I had elevated BP (circa 140/95) due to about 30 excess lbs. In fact, my Doctor was ready to prescribe and put me on Blood Pressure medicine.

Then I read this book along with The Magnesium Miracle and started adding
a few drops of liquid Magnesium Chloride to my drinking water...when I returned
to the Doctor for a sinus infection - I was shocked to learn that my Blood Pressure
had completely returned to normal - and has STAYED in the normal range
(circa 120/80) since adding Magnesium to my Water. It is also a natural relaxant.
Anyone who suffers from nervousness and anxiety should take Magnesium supplements.

Now - I don't go a day without Magnesium !
