From the moment I read the cover copy, I was intrigued by this novel. I actually didn't read it for a couple of months, but I could not forget how intrigued I was by this book, and I'm so glad I read it!
Such an original idea and a unique story. Time travel stories can be difficult for me to process, but this was written well and I found it believable. I loved the mix of time travel with myth, and I fell in love with the characters, but especially Nix's best friend, Kashmir. The writing itself was beautiful, and it really pulled me into the story.
There was only one character I felt a little let down by, and that was Nix's father. I wasn't convinced of his decision at the end of the story (don't worry, no spoilers). I don't think his character was developed well enough for him to come to the conclusion that he does. It didn't feel right to me.
Other than that, this was a beautiful story. I'd recommend it.

Captivating! This book is not your typical time travel book. An advanced reader copy was made available to me from NetGalley in return for an honest review. Heilig has used the backdrop of real history to create an intriguing heroine and a host of believable characters. This book drew me in particularly since Hawaiian history and Chinese history are two of my passions. Her descriptions took me back to my beloved Nu'uanu Valley and the sights and sounds only found in Hawai'i. She also brings to light a rather unpleasant period of American history when businessmen manipulated the situation in Hawai'i to dispose of the monarchy and gain control of the islands. The book is fiction but the history behind it is real and compelling. This concept and the protagonist Nixie have the potential to be a long-running series of adventures. The only limits are Heilig's knowledge of history and her delightful imagination as she sweeps Nixie and us back and forth through time and across oceans of time! Bring on Nixie's next adventure. I hated having to close the covers and leave her worlds and her friends behind!

It took me a teeny bit to get into this one. The premise is absolutely fabulous: biracial MC + time-traveling ship floating to new eras by dated maps? And not just places in the normal world, but also fantastical ones? So cool!
I loved some of the characters: Kash and Bee in particular. But I never really felt that close to the MC. Other characters kept mentioning how important her role was on the ship, but I felt like I never saw it happening on page, so she felt a bit aimless to me, and I think that and the slow pacing after the opening chapter made it harder to get into. The third member of the love triangle also did nothing for me really. BUT...
The plot was a super fun one though and the Hawaiian setting so gorgeous. The writing was stellar. I also LOOVED the fantastical/mythological elements and creatures and I wanted MOAR!!! I'll definitely be picking up the sequel. (and I really hope there are more cool fantastical creatures in it!)

Pardon my punctuation since my comma key does not work anymore! It took a longer time than usual for me to read this book due to getting ready for the holidays. I enjoyed it quite a bit but I think that I kept forgetting things that had been mentioned earlier on and that is what caused me to feel confused for a lot of the book. Looking back on it now that it is finished I find that I liked it quite a bit. I particularly enjoyed the character Kashmir. This book is such a strange blend of sci-fi magic and folklore that it is hard to explain but it works! The notes at the end of the book were really helpful in tying the whole story together and I particularly enjoyed how the story seemed to come full circle from beginning to end. I hope there is a sequel; I haven't heard yet.

This book is absolutely delightful! It's pure adventure, all built around one of the coolest magical premises I've encountered in a very long time. The maps! The maps are so awesome! Why can't I have a time-traveling ship and a collection of maps like that?
Nix is a great main character, clever and resourceful, and the characters around her are wonderful too--I just love the idea of a ship's crew of people from all different times and places, some of which shouldn't even be possible, all living and working together as a found family. I also adore the historical Hawaiian setting.
Once I started reading I ended up spending an entire day at the beach ignoring the ocean and the palm trees and the blue skies in favor of keeping my nose stuck in the book because I didn't want to put it down. I hope there's going to be a sequel because I want to read more about this magical world and these characters and their travels.

I really liked the voice or writing style of this author—so fun to read the metaphors and phrasings. Snappy and fun dialogue, too. The pacing in this book, however, was very leisurely. While that provided time to set up great mood, characters, and setting, it didn’t make much of anything feel very urgent. Things happened, but not too quickly. I was reading an ARC version and was appalled that pages 89-120 were totally missing! When I decided to continue to read anyway to find out what happened, I discovered I really hadn’t missed much plot-wise in the 30 pages that were omitted. The mystery of what might happen kept me going, but it wasn’t an on-the-edge-of-your-seat read. So it really depends on what kind of book you’re in the mood for—a devouring or a savoring kind of book. This is a slower, savoring one.

I absolutely loved this book. I'm so upset that it's been on my reading list AND on my kindle for so long and I just got to reading it a few days ago. It was fantastic. I love the setting, the historical references and places, and the characters. Typically I do not like history-like books but this one was fantastic. It was witty and clever and a page turner. I just ordered the second one and I cannot wait to start it. This book was an awesome end of summer read!

The Girl from Everywhere is a cleverly-written and refreshingly unusual take on the time travel motif. The characters are well flushed out, interesting, flawed, amusing, entertaining, and diverse.
The twists and turns of the plot are exciting, unpredictable, surprising -- I loved being jerked around from time and place, and experiencing the historical and the magical adventures being placed on my horizon. I can highly recommend this gem of a book!

Ugh, this is my second time reading this book and it is so good, I'm almost mad at Heilig. I absolutely fell in love with the language of this story. Heilig's writing is masterful perfectly balanced with purpose and beauty. Nix's search for a home, for belonging, for love is so poignant and I loved all the myths weaving in and out of her journeys. The book has an amazing sense of place, which is something I look for and love in fantasy. Hawaii--history and myth--came alive in this book and I need more. MOAR I SAY.

Enjoyed this read and read it rather quickly. Writing was engaging, the concept was intriguing. I like adult and young adult books, this was more young adult. The heroine was a 16 yr old girl, but her cohorts were a boy from hawaii and a boy from persia, different time periods. There were enough different kinds of characters to appeal to everyone. An adventure story testing the bonds of all different kinds of love.

I absolutely loved this book! Nix and her father, Slate, sail through time and space. As long as they have a map they can go anywhere, real or imagined. But they can't seem to find the right map to get them back to Nix's mother in 1868 Honolulu. What follows in an epic adventure across space and time as they try to find the right map and Nix tries to figure out what is best for her. The characters were all believable and amazing, a diverse cast of people Slate had met through his travels. There is a little romance to this book, but it doesn't overshadow the main plot, which I personally appreciated. Overall, if you like books with time travel, this is a must read.

Like all adventures, THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE will take you on a journey to places you've never known. But this isn't just any journey. It's a spectacular journey. Through time. To places that existed long ago, and to others that existed only in myth. Heilig's painting of these worlds was vivid enough to leave me with the taste of mangos on my tongue and the lingering scent of cardamom. I fell fast for the main character, Nix, as she struggled to love her father, knowing that the one thing he quests for could erase her entire existence. Their whirlwind jaunts across the world, across time, were so riveting I couldn't put the book down. And I developed a pretty serious crush on Kashmir, the gentleman thief. I can't rate this beautifully written feast of a book highly enough.

The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig is a whole lot of fun! I'm looking forward to the sequel so much -- why do I have to wait another year!
Heilig makes a strong debut full of interesting (and morally gray! and diverse!) characters while managing to intertwine magic with the history we already know so well.
Recommended for fans of Passenger by Alexandra Bracken, Victoria Schwab, and Cat Winters. (History + kickass female main character + weird magic.)

I enjoyed the book. It had repeats but not enough to distract me, as I am a fanatic about authors that go back over a situation again and a again.
It got a little confusing at times in the telling of a time travel sequence but it still was enjoyable

Wow. What a crazy adventure. I was a little unsure at first because time travel can be tough and so many people love this book, but I did too. I loved being in 1884 Hawaii and watching the adventures that Nix and the crew were having unfold. I grew to love and care for this crew, which made certain moments quite terrifying for me. I am so so happy I was able to read this book, and it just shows me that I need more books set in the sea.

I really thoroughly enjoyed this book. There were a few plot points I either wasn't expecting or didn't necessarily agree with, but that didn't take away from the story or the writing. It's a very cool idea, and I was "on board" with the first chapter.

Great, fun adventure with pirates, time travel, historical fiction that left me wanting a sea dragon! If Nix (the awesome main character trying to find her own way in life while on a Pirate ship with her drug addled Captain of a dad) comes back for more adventures I'd certainly read, and not gonna lie I fell in love with Kashmir.

A thrilling adventure! THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE weaves together history and myths in the most unique ways--all of it unfolding with evocative writing that paints the settings so vividly in readers' minds. What I loved most was Heilig's unique premise, and the constructs of her time-travel. Unique and captivating, she creates a narrative world unlike anything I've experienced before. I loved the character of Kash, and the romantic tension between he and the main character, Nix, is ache-y and sweet. The perfect build-up for a series. I can't wait for the next one!

What you will find in this book:
-a girl who has never known a home other than the deck of her father's ship and where it docks
-a magic that takes our heroine to anywhere, anytime, real OR imagined as long as there's a map
-a best friend from the world of 1001 Nights
-an island kingdom (19th century Hawaii) struggling to hold on to its independence
-characters who have to decide what the real meaning of family is
Time travel mixed with historical fiction and imagined worlds. I let this book swallow me up whole. #noregrets

Pirates! Adventure! An adorable, tiny, pearl-eating dragon!
I gobbled up this time-traveling journey on a pirate ship from the first word to the last. At the heart of this story there was family, loyalty, and an exploration of identity. The characters were downright fun. The settings were magical. And there were stinkin' cute boys. If the author could manage to send me one of those ships for my birthday...that would be great.
I can't wait for the next book in Nixie's adventure! Sign me up.

A fantasy worth reading. Especially if you you’re looking for a different cast of characters other than sorcerers, witches, vampires, or werewolves. A newly created fable that reads like it’s been passed down by many generations. A great read for all ages.

Wow, a swashbuckling adventure with a tender core. Somehow Heidi Heilig manages this amazing feat. THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE time/space travels from modern day New York City, to ancient Xian, China, to independent 19th century Hawaii, serving up street chases, bank heists, and political treason. And at the center of it all? A resourceful girl torn between love for her father and the growing, aching certainty that his obsession results in her death.
Inventive and magical. I’m blown away by Heilig's premise that the world we arrive at is formed by who drew the map and who navigated. I’ll be lining up for sequels.

Nothing offensive here. Just so boring I couldn’t make it past page 68. I stuck it out that long in the hope it would improve. The plot seems to be a time traveling father and daughter who navigate through time using old maps. The daughter is concerned that her existence is threatened by her father’s desire to time travel back before her mother’s death. I thought the writing was fine but the story is a complete snooze.

Nix is a pirate on her father's ship that can travel through time as long as they have a map for it, sounds way cool but lacked what I was expecting- grand adventures, swoony romance, kick a** heroine. The relationships between Nix and the side characters Kashmir and Blake were lukewarm at best. The grand adventure was a mediocre discovery. This let me down.

But Captain Slate is on a mission . . . to find a map that can take him to Hawaii, circa 1864 when his wife was still alive. Trouble is, his daughter, Nixie, is certain this will erase her existence.
I loved this book. I loved the historical aspects. I loved learning about some of the myths and legends that exist around the world, and the practical uses Nix finds for some pretty awesome legendary artifacts. And I especially loved watching Nix, and her father figure out what was really important to them. Sometimes it takes a tragedy to figure that out, and sometimes just an almost tragedy. But either way, this book will take you on a fantastical adventure. Your only disappointment will be that you can't travel on their ship, the Temptation, too!
Note: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest reveiw.
