Thug Kitchen 101 is my 2nd Thug Kitchen book and I love them all. Recipes are fresh and innovative and very easy to follow. Techniques and terminology that might not be common knowledge are thoroughly explained. Photographs and funny captions of both the completed dishes and California landmarks guide you through the book. I'm not a Vegan but these dishes are tasty, creative and relatively nutritious. Creamy Squash Mac & Cheese with Hot Sauce & Breadcrumbs along with the Dan Dan Noodles are my favorites.

The lighthearted approach and humor (if you can tolerate the cussing), variety in dishes, along with consideration for various modern diets make this a standout basic cookbook. Recipes in here, are fast to cook, and tasty. Gave as a gift for someone who cooks for practical reasons but does not yet enjoy being in the kitchen, and it was a hit. Flavor profiles seem to repeat, but by then you're probably much more comfortable in the kitchen to start experimenting on your own.

I read some reviews where people were upset prep time was not included. If you want something healthy and full of flavor, it's going to take longer than 10 minutes. I personally don't think 30-40 minutes is an outrageous amount of time to spend in th kitchen for this quality of food. These recipes are healthy, full of flavor, just as delicious as their previous book, but do take less time. If you are looking for vegan meals full of flavor I recommend this book! Beware of adult language. If you find the use of the F word offensive, this book isn't for you.

This book is great, but I would highly recommend the original Thug Kitchen book over this one. I have recently moved to Japan with my husband who is in the Navy. We have limited access to produce. I purchased the original Thug Kitchen cookbook and fell in love, I could make real vegan meals that my carnivore husband and I both liked, with food that was easy to find! For most recipes it was as easy as searching through my pantry for the simple ingredients. This book is a bit more work to search for the ingredients, spices, etc. If you live near a Whole Foods, Sprouts, or other health food store then I would recommend this book, but for someone who's options are more limited like ours, I would say stick to the original Thug Kitchen book. I am grateful I bought this book because we move a lot, so I'm sure the next place we go will be in the states and it will be easier to find certain foods and then I can make more of the fabulous recipes in this cookbook! But for now it is mostly going to be used for sitting pretty on my counter.

Also, would like to comment that the packaging it was shipped in was not the best. It was shipped in a bubble-wrap lined bag. For a large hard cover book that was not enough coverage. The back corners of the book were smashed in pretty badly. Even a light box or an extra layer of bubble wrap most likely could have saved this from happening.

I would like to say that yes, I will probably order the third book they have out because...well, they are amazing books. I love skimming through them and even if I can't get the exact ingredients they call for, I try and make it work. Thanks Thug Kitchen for being my savior while in Japan! You have taught me that I don't need the expensive, processed vegan products to be a vegan! Maybe being across the globe from a Whole Foods was a blessing from the vegan-gods to get back to eating actual whole foods :P

Love Thug Kitchen and this book was not disappointing. While we are not a vegan family, we do enjoy a wide variety of foods and cooking styles. The recipes we tried were easy and used ingredients easily found at our local markets (not always the case with vegan recipes) and really delicious! What I enjoy most about these recipes is that the flavors are incredible and purposeful. They are bold but not overpowering, and your tastebuds will be overjoyed while you devour a delicious, healthy meal. Even my carnivore husband did not miss the meat and happily ate seconds then took more to work for lunch the next day! Looking forward to their next release!

Once upon a time, when I was single and childless, I was a vegetarian. Because that was so long ago, I have forgotten most of what I knew then about getting complete proteins the meatless way. I recently bought this cookbook and it has been an invaluable resource getting back to a plant based diet. It doesn't just have recipes, but also resources on how to stock your pantry, what type of grain/bean/etc is best for substituting where meat used to be, and so on. The great thing is, my teenager hardly notices the lack of meat (and she is an avid meat lover)! Anyone looking to cut down on their meat intake, whether for health reasons or environmental ones or some other reason all together, I highly recommend this book! As long as you don't mind swearing and irreverence... that is... and that was what drew me to it in the first place!

I so love this book! Awesome recipes, I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian...the recipes are so awesome though they don't taste vegan! Ha! That sounds bad...I mean it in the very best sense! That being said, the book is extremely humorous if you're not offended by the *F* bomb, etc, I think that so lends great character to the book, I actually laugh out loud when reading/making these awesome recipes...and they are awesome! A lot of good information on nutrition plus I love how the authors stress that expensive ingredients are not necessary...AND the ingredients seem to be accessible to most people...an all around great book! I own all three and cook from them on a regular basis! I highly recommend for your health!

Love this cookbook. So far I've made a handful of recipes in an effort to reduce my family's meat intake. A few of the tried recipes are keepers, a couple of those I will consider making a few alterations or skipping; however, this is a personal preference and in no way a reflection of the quality and thought put into them. The straight-forward and no-nonsense advice and language used in the book is refreshing and often made me chuckle out loud. A great addition to my counter top.

I've been a Thug Kitchen fan since day one and have introduced it to friends and family--you don't need to be a vegan to appreciate the amazing recipes in Thug books, you just need to love good/great food. Plus they're hilarious.

Love this book! So many good recipes! My first Thug Kitchen book was their party recipes and they're always a hit! I've already made a few recipes from this book as well and they're delicious! I've even made them for my steak loving bf and he's enjoyed them as well!
And as a Cali veggie, I love these recipes inspired by the 101!

the food looks good as usual. but im kinda let down that i thought this was gonna be quick recipes to put together in a hurry, but thats not really the case at all, many of the recipes are 30-45 minute cook times and the ones that arent often recommend using recipes from other books that u need to prep, or cooking up some lentils or beans which can take a while on its own.

So the food looks amazing and I cant wait to try it, but the speed and cost of ingredients seems identicle if not longer than the first couple books.

I have all of Thug Kitchen's cookbooks and I love them so much. We have been using them for about two years and we love every single book they come out with. Before purchasing, be aware that they do use vulgar language (we don't care but some people do!) into their recipes. If you're not offended by that, then you're going to find some amazing recipes. What's awesome, too, is they don't just give you a shopping list and send you on your way to make food. They explain everything and sometimes exactly where to get hard to find ingredients so you're not wandering around the grocer like an idiot. I love this cookbook because the recipes are easy and very quick to make. We usually use 1-2 recipes a week from this book and we never get sick of it. Their Chili Mac is the best one, in my opinion, but you might find you love another recipe! Definitely one of our favorites.

So I haven't tried any of these out yet, to be clear. But I've went through almost all of the recipes, and in reviewing them, they look tasty and doable. In fact, there are many that look quite good. This isn't for someone looking for recipes with meat in them.

Lol, I bought this for my mom for mother's day. I gave it to her early and she was like the language in this book. Was a bit surprised, by the amount of profanity in it, but, she was excited about some of the recipes. Still not sure about her stirring the sh*t out of stuff.

I tried tempeh once. That was enough. It sucks rotten eggs (which might actually taste better than tempeh). No matter - I absolutely adore this cookbook and the entire Thug Kitchen oeuvre. TK lets me feed my skeptical spouse on Meatless Monday, Taco Tuesday, Wegetable Wednesday, and Thofu Thursday without him knowing his triglycerides and blood pressure are being secretly tamed. It also lets us eat healthy without busting through our monthly food budget in a single shop. Cauliflower is cheap, peeps! So are frozen veggies. Most of the ingredients in these recipes are available at honest to goodness supermarkets, Super Targets, and Super Walmarts. No farmer's market needed (though if you have one nearby, god bless you, go!) Here's the thing about the TK recipes: if you don't like something, you can leave it out and they still work and taste awesome enough that you can announce to your family, "That was vegan, you know," as they're laying down their forks in postprandial bliss. You don't have to be vegan to enjoy this food. I sometimes use these recipes as side dishes for a Sunday roast. Or make the soups with chicken broth (shhhh...) Or use non-non-dairy milk (yeah, the kind animals make - deal with it). The recipes don't take any longer to make than any other cook-from-scratch meals. There are no fancy-schmancy chef techniques. No $500 kitchen equipment required. Try this or any other Thug Kitchen book. Make your tongue happy. And your heart and wallet and family too while you're at it.

This book is one of my favorites - and I have dozens of cookbooks. Over the past 2 months I've gone vegan but have mostly been eating beans and rice and salad and my family is eating whatever they normally eat. Now I can incorporate some healthier alternatives into meals and not have to fix something separate for myself. Not only is the writing funny as hell, the pictures are gorgeous, the info is useful and the recipes are fun and easy without being too simple. For someone who loves to cook but hates fussy, over-complicated recipes, this is the perfect cookbook!

This is a great book but I'm knocking off a star because it's marketed to be "Fast as F*ck" but doesn't quite live up to that. While the cooking times may fall into that category the prep time doesn't. I was hoping for 3-5 ingredient meals that have a quick OVERALL time. The prep time on most of the recipes is still pretty long though. I don't mind 45 min cook time. I do mind 30+ min prep time.

That being said, the recipes are varied and good. Their witty commentary throughout is entertaining. I love how informative the book is in regard to explaining different food items and techniques. It's a great follow up the the first book and both are used a couple times a week in my kitchen. They have certainly made the transition to vegetarian (almost vegan) a lot easier.

I love the original thug kitchen and cook from it at least a few times a week. What I love about TK3 is that the majority of the recipes are much faster to prepare with all the same amazing flavor. I've seen one or two reviews stating the recipe times don't include prep time, but I disagree. I cook daily and haven't had trouble getting the recipes done in the timeframes stated in the book. My boyfriend is a less experience cook so he has taken a little
Longer to put together the recipes he's tried, but this would be true of any recipe.
I think this cookbook is perfect for anyone looking for delicious dinner recipes that can be put together easily on a weeknight.

Great tasty recipes.
This basically is a vegetarian or vegan cookbook.
Although with any recipe you can add chicken, fish, etc, and it works good.

The recipes are not as fast as it says, but what the heck, so it takes an extra 10 mins. its worth it..

I have given Thug Kitchen 101, and there other cookbook for gifts, and everyone loves them, and everything
they have cooked from this.

Thank you for helping make this easy (& funny & actually helpful w the basics) bc eventhough I'm 100% sure it's the right choice for me, it has all felt intimidating soooo for a newbie! ...For example, WTactualF is nutritional yeast, anyway? Well, now I know. I promised myself that I would learn at least 5 new super badass vegan dishes that were so good even my meat -loving family would be asking for seconds by Dec....THIS book will def be my secret weapon (and a good reminder that I can totally do this and that vegans eat food, too)! ♡ Y'all keep doing your thing!!!! Love fr Austin.

So I was sooo excited to get this but kind of disappointed about it being a Vegan cookbook. I didn't realize this at all. I guess I should have read reviews before buying it. A lot of the stuff in here I would NEVER make. Just not my style or my family's. I wish they had a book with more realistic recipes.

Ok, so I was a skeptic. After reading a few of the recipes I decided to try one that would either make or break this book for me. As a guy, I'm in love with burritos. Oh yeah, those awesome meat filled roll-ups laced with crack-like cheese and all the goodies. I figured if they could do this Vegan, the rest would be easy. So My first outing was to make the Borracho Squash and Bean Burritos with Coconut-Lime Rice. Sounded weird AF. Boom! To say these were good would be an understatement. Sure, they aren't your typical burrito but wow, talk about flavor! I asked a friend who is Vegan if she ever tried these "Thug Kitchen" books and her reply was, "OMG, YES!" She said the recipes are fantastic and if this first try is any indication, I may be eating this way for a long time. Oh and the instructions are funny, that is, unless you're one of those serious puritanical types who judges anything with cursing in it as bad. Even if you are, STFU and make this stuff. You will be glad you did.

When my family and I decided to start eating better I quickly became loyal to Thug Kitchen. I made almost every recipe from the first book, and made many of them over and over again. The second book, too. But there were nights when I'd get home from work and spend hours cooking. It was always amazingly delicious and always depressing because my whole night would be gone.

101 has transformed my life. I can cook delicious, nutritious in a snap and move on with my life. I hope they make more like this.

Pros:
1) Speed, of course
2) The not-terrible lentil soup is so bomb that even if I hated every other recipe it would still get a 4 star review.
3) Simple, inexpensive ingredient lists

Cons:
There are a LOT of pictures of signs and streets and city lights, but few pictures of the completed recipes. I would have preferred those pages to have been filled with more recipes, or at least pictures of the finished dishes.

On that note, there are a lot of desserts, drinks, snacks and side dishes rather than main dishes. There is probably an equal share of each, but it would have been nice to see a larger dinner/main dish section.

Anyway, I consider this book essential and I don't know how I lived this long without it.

Crossing my fingers for a slow cooker book ;)

The title and theme of this book is completely misleading. I bought it because my time is limited, and I was looking for fast & healthy recipes. However, this book only lists the COOKING time of the recipes. Not the prep time. So you have an elaborate salad full of julienned vegetables, this book listed that as taking only 5 minutes to make (because that's how long it takes to arrange once all the prep work is done). That's completely a lie!!! What about the time it takes to wash and chop all that veg. We don't have sous chefs in our kitchen to do the grunt work for us. There's no consideration of the prep time at all. I want to know how long it will take from the time my family says they're hungry until I can put food in their face. Period. Don't mislead folks.

If you're NOT a student, or a mom, or a busy business person, and you have a lot of freetime to cook... then go ahead and get this book. If you're like me and your time is limited, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU. I'm returning this book! Ain't nobody got time for this misleading nonsense.

Wanted to live online books but they fall shirty of the functionality of, get this, PAPER. You have no way to edit content or write notes in the margins, so good luck remembering all those tweaks you made to the recipes

Love the recipes in this book (coconut lime rice is to die for!) but have 2 complaints. First off, there is not enough description. I prefer too many details when it comes to cooking rather than not enough. The recipe will say "Sliced Fennel" but how should I slice it? How big? That will determine the cook time! I've learned to make notes on the pages based on failed attempts. Second, these meals are "Fast" only if you have prepped everything ahead of time. We tried to make the firecracker salad (Ready in 5 minutes!) But there was so much shredding, slicing chopping, it took over an hour, so take the prep times with a grain of salt (Or a grain of nooch if you prefer).

If you are thinking about cutting back on meat, are partial vegan, or full on vegan, this cookbook is for you! I love this cookbook because it’s unlike every cookbook I’ve ever used. It’s funny to read, easy to understand, and the recipes are just plain delicious. They do not make me miss eating the meat versions at all. My favorites have been the banana chocolate chip cookies, turmeric sweet potato soup, and borracho squash and bean burritos.

The other nice thing is most ingredients are things you likely have already in your pantry or refrigerator. It’s been friendly for my wallet and my waist. Get this cookbook. You will not regret it.

I really liked the original Thug Kitchen book, but this one was not my favorite. While it did have a lot of quick recipes, it was really heavy on fillers like drinks and sauces. Also, recipes that were listed as "quick" involved having pre-cooked the ingredients like quinoa or potatoes and the time listed was just throwing the pre-cooked stuff together and heating it for 10 minutes. Maybe if you menu plan and have everything pre-cooked on Sunday night these might work for the work week dinners.

I bought this as a gift to add onto this author's first book which I had also given as a gift. There are currently 3 in the series and they are all entertaining and offer awesome vegan recipes. The instructions are easy to follow and follow a compassionate, vegan approach to all of its recipes. I wanted to reduce it to four stars for the language and innuendos but honestly that's what this series is known for and marketed as such so I didn't feel as thought that would be a fair thing to do. Thug Kitchen is perfect for vegans and I think even people who aren't vegan and want to just add a plant based meal here and there would love it.

My Environmental Science class is having an Eco-Fair tomorrow and my teacher brought in this cookbook (along with other vegan ones) to use as reference if we wanted to bring a dish as extra credit for the fair we are hosting. I took a picture of the Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe and i just finished making them and I AM IN LOVE! I was a vegetarian for 3 months (working towards being a vegan) and i felt great, but it was inconvenient for my mom who cooks our food and i know she's tired and she works hard so i didnt want her to struggle with dinner because of me so i stopped. I also considered making my own food, but i hate cooking and i dont really have time for complicated recipes (and im also not the most patient person in the world, SPECIALLY when im hungry). However, i tried the recipe and it is so simple and easy, the ingredients are things you either have at home already or pretty cheap and easily accessible at any store, AND it tastes great too! I bought the book today and during class i was checking out all the other dessert recipes cause im a sweet tooth so im stoked to try all of them out! So definitely a funny vegan cook book for all those who hate cooking, are impatient, and love uncomplicated recipes that still taste amazing!

The food is usually on the healthier side and most recipes offer options for meat eaters as well as vegetarians/vegans.

Of all the cook books I have these are the ones I reach for the most. I've even gifted them to my foodie friends who absolutely love them.
Check out their website for some sample recipes you will laugh and eat well. Enjoy!

This book is amazing. The recipes are just as tasty as the other TK books, but faster! This is my go-to when I need inspiration to use up a few ingredients, or when I know I'm going to have a busy week and need to prep a few meals. I've made so many of the recipes and they're all delicious, and mostly pretty healthy too. As with all TK cookbooks, the narration is half the fun. It's like you have a tough love grandma holding your hand as you try to fend for yourself in the adult world.

Ohhhh my goodness. Bought this for xmas for my BFs vegetarian sister. Had to take a peek before I wrapped it and this book is HILARIOUS. The recipes sound delicious, and it is still easy to understand despite the cussing and "thugness". 10/10 gotta get the sequels too now haha

Got mine at a book sale thinking it was a cute gimmick to cuss, but meh @ the "fast" recipes. For 1, they aren't so fast, and for 2, the recipe format is written very difficult for actually cooking. Lots of excess baggage in this cursey travel book that's trying to masquerade as a cookbook, once you get past the gimmick of seeing the F word in print all over a book.

Thug Kitchen is so unique!! I love the way it's written, it really makes you feel like becoming vegan, and honestly that's a little intimidating for someone who's not. The recipes all look amazing, an all the ones I've tried so far ARE amazing!! You won't be disappointed purchasing this book or the other two!!

I love all the thug kitchen cookbooks. The writers have a conversational tone and work hard to emphasize that their recipes aren't only for advanced cooks. I only wish that there were more photos of the actual dishes, instead of so many nonfood pictures.

I bought this as a gift for a friend and actually scanned a couple of recipes before I have it to her because they sounded awesome... I made them and they WERE awesome. Not to mention the whole book is just friggin funny!

Bought this and Thug Kitchen Party Grub for my son and his roommates for their first college apartment. They absolutely LOVE it! I love that they're using the recipes and eating healthier than the bachelor chow (all that fast food) that they're used to. It's funny, it's got swear words so the boys think it's cool, but as a mom I just like that it's improving their diet.

I already have the other books and use them every day. Right now I have beans on to soak for use for the week. Every recipe is easy, delicious and good for you.

Stop eating for your mouth and eat for your body's needs!

First this is a book by 2 white women in Brooklyn or Portland which is ok, but a total appropriation of thug culture. It's a marketing gimmick with a lot of unnecessary cussing and so so receipes. All the cursing becomes annoying after the first paragraph and it has nothing to do with thug life (which I don't care for) so it's a total bogus front to get you to read a book on how to learn how to cook so so food. Heck you can google better recipes than this. I'm guessing they were high when they write this and thought it would be cool. So very disappointed. So why not put a picture of you on there...yeah now you know why. Maybe wouldn't be so hard on them, well the recipes is the reason I bought it and let's not forget that is a major disappoint, but how cool if it was a brother from rural Nebraska writing a thug kitchen cookbook....with good recipes!

If only there was a zero stars option. Or even a negative stars option. Apparently the creators of Thug Kitchen think they can cover up awful vegan food with a ton of profanity and a bad gimmick that gets stale after the first couple of sentences in this cookbook. The condescending and patronizing tone of the book immediately turned me off.In addition to that, I could not find one recipe in here that I would even be curious to try (and the photography makes the food look as visually appealing as a plate of lawn clippings). After reading other reviews about how much tweaking of these recipes to make them edible, confirmed every instinct I had about this collection of 'recipes'. I know there are great vegan cookbooks out there...this isn't one. I honestly never thought I could be so thoroughly offended by a cookbook. Will be using in as kindling for my next barbecue.

This book uses the "F" word so often it gets very disgusting. I knew it had lots of vulgar words but the author goes out of his way to use it as often as possible. I wish I'd never purchased. I wouldn't even think of gifting it.

Received this book as a gift and although the recipes are good to have I don't think its necessary to have all that bad language in there. Yes, it's called a thug cookbook but still I find it unnecessary to have foul language in a cook book. And the most confusing to me of all is that this is what they call a "best seller" book.

Proof that the empire is in decline. Gutter level language from California vegans who call themselves Thugs. To call the recipes fast is a fraud. Marketing the book as thugs is a joke. Offensive garbage but trash sells very well in gullible America.

Biff and Becky!! For the love of Christmas can we move past this silly obession with Becky's pretending they have suffered the indignities and horrors of racism in this country! Some inner-city youth use ths language to express their anger and anguish to express being treated like slaughter animals and these insensitive cowards trivialise their plight! They couldn't walk a day in the shoes of an inner-city eight-year old!
Will the authors ever have to tell their children to keep thier hands on the wheel of the car or the nice officers may blow their brains out?! NO! STOP making light of the suffering of real people who must deal with death and destruction EVERY. SINGLE.DAY!
It's disgusting.

It used to be that if I had a student who seemed to like to swear a lot, I would mention that some younger people like to swear a lot because they think it makes them seem older, but if they really thought about it, how often did they ever hear a mature adult swear, especially in public or in front of children? Of course nowadays it's much tougher to do that, because so many of them have a certain class of parent that DOES swear like that pretty much all the time, even in front of them. One of those sorts obviously wrote this book. the store needs a disclaimer on this book regarding the foul language, for those who might be ordering for a school library, have children, have class...

I think the recipes are very good, the language could be cleaned up a lot. I don't see why it's necessary to use the F-bomb and God's name in vein over and over again. In Fact, had I known there was so much of it in this book I would not have ordered it.

Lol, I bought this for my mom for mother's day. I gave it to her early and she was like the language in this book. Was a bit surprised, by the amount of profanity in it, but, she was excited about some of the recipes. Still not sure about her stirring the sh*t out of stuff.
