I've been having fun going thru this book. The recipes I've tried thus far have been pretty easy. The only criticism I'd give it would be to be a little more descriptive on some of the cooking terms for the cooking illiterate, like myself. But it's accomplishing it's goal, which is to get me to try cooking more so that I'm no longer so cooking illiterate. (example: poached pears, the terms parboiling and poaching. I had an idea what these terms meant, but went to the all mighty google to confirm while I was making this dish)

This book is great, so many recipes, each with a cool little blurb from the books. Instructions are very easy to follow. I have only made the beef and bacon pie so far, but if the rest of the recipes are like that, then they will be delicious!

I found this on the store about 2 months before my mom's birthday. She and I are big Game of Thrones fans; she read the first book about a year before the show premiered. We've seen every episode of each of the two seasons. Cooking is one of her hobbies. So when I found this cook book, it had a great mix: Game of Thrones + cooking. My first initial reaction was, "Oh man, she would love this!" So I ordered and gave it to her for her birthday. She was very surpised by it, since I hadn't hinted or acknowledged anything about it to her prior. She really likes it, and is going to make a recipe from it pretty soon.

For the book itself, I've skimmed through it, some of the recipes made me smile with familiarization of places of Westeros, like, Harrenhal Gruel, and such. I'm not going to cook any of the food, but I'll surely eat it.

The other reviews and descriptions are perfectly accurate, except that the photos are better than depicted and exceeded expectations. These are not "easy weeknight dinners," though. They do require some time and skill, and are best suited for special occasions.

I have tried one of the recipes (onions in brown gravy) and enjoyed it. The illustrations are great and it is written quite well. I recommend it as a way to enhance your enjoyment of the books and the television series.

The intro made me laugh. Any fans of game of thrones will love this. The book itself is very nice, high quality. The recipes are double which felt like they were filling up space but the majority looked good and properly themed.

There are good recipes for new cookers, I'm not very experieced at cooking but I could make good dishes. At the momend I only made the "Black Bread" and the "Breakfast at Winterfell" but it was very good.

For brazilians, I made it here!

This book is awesome. The receipes are delicious and well thought out. Their blogs also provides awesome alternatives/additional recipes and support. It's really fun to be able to make ancient recipes without having to do all the research yourself.

Ordered this because I enjoy cooking for friends and family and because I am a huge fan-boy of the SOIAF series.

It is a huge bonus to have ancient recipies to replicate and recreate, as well as the modern version for all these wonderful items.

The first night with the book, my friend and myself made a feast of 7 different dishes, in the spirit of those North on the Wall, to those down in King's Landing, across the Narrow Sea and everywhere in between.

Highly recomend to any fan of George RR Martin and/or cookbooks. The mulled wine is a must for any chilly day, and the iced blueberries with creme Bastard is a wonderful treat on a hot summer's night

I checked this book out of the library before buying it, something I recommend for cookbooks in general to see if they are worth getting (if you know you will cook more than 1/3 of the recipes, buy it). The authors researched medieval and Roman recipes to approximate what the characters in the series would have eaten and offer medieval and modern style versions of dishes featured. The recipes are well written and quite tasty. This book is probably best for Game of Thrones fans who like to cook and people who are into food history. If you don't have an appreciation for Ren Faire food, although this food is better than the average Ren Faire offerings, you will probably want to pass on this one.

I want to open a restaurant based off this book. Everything in here that I have tried is delicious, and I am a picky person when it come to saying food is good.

I made the meat pie, and it was to die for.

I will warn you, this cookbook is not for the beginners who don't know the difference between butter and margarine. If you know how to cook and want to experiment, this is for you.

This is an incredible cookbook! It's dishes are based upon the hit series- it gives you background on each one, where it is in the movie series. We got this as a Chtistmas present for my daughter and son-in-law. I know they'll love ir!

This is seriously some good stuff!! We were planning a Medieval theme wedding and needed ideas and recipes for food. The only thing i wish this had was more recipes. I thought there would be a couple hundred but theres really maybe 30 slightly disappointed but it is still a really good recipe book if youre trying to find medieval recipes

The writing is wonderful and the pictures are gorgeous. Almost all the recipes have a "medieval" and a "modern" version.
...but through all the Ice and Fire books people are chowing down on lamprey pie. No recipe for that?!? C'mon. That's a big miss.

This is an amazing collection of recipes that includes both a modern and "original" (aka old fashioned) version of the recipe. However these are not foods I would prepare on a regular basis so it loses some stars. That in mind, the cookbook itself would make a great addition to any household and have recipes on hand for any GOT viewing party or themed party in general

Fist I want to say that while this book is aimed at fans of George RR Martin's epic novels A Song of Ice and Fire, I think that anyone would enjoy making most of these recipes. As a fan of the books myself I have always loved George's descriptions of his characters foods, the detail draws you into the world and sometimes makes you hungry just reading about it. Thanks to Chelsea and Sariann we can actually have some of those foods.

The book itself is well written with some fantastic old world recipes as well as several modern versions of the same recipe. I really have enjoyed cooking some of these and so far everything has come out amazing. The instructions are simple, pictures are great, and the ability to be apart of a fantasy novel in such a real way is truly a unique kind of experience. Sister Stew has been my favorite so far and I highly recommend trying this one out. If you're also a fan of the HBO series Game of Thrones using this book to recreate some of Westero's meals would be a real fun way to sit down with friends and/or family and watch the show. Just don't play Rains of Castamere when you're doing it...

Great book with really nice pictures and backstory for all the recipes. They're arranged in a really helpful way so you can decide if you want to explore the flavours of the north or try something quite exotic from across the narrow sea. It also has a foreword by George R.R Martin himself, so they're even author approved and tasted.

As a GRRM fan and also a medieval re-enactor with an interest in food, I completely enjoyed this book. It has modern and medieval redactions of most recipes and the photos are "appetizing". It's fun to see what these ladies have come up with to represent each country in the books.

I was really excited to recieve this product and it is, indeed, a really fantastic cookbook. It has beautiful photos and is well laid out, and of course I can't wait to dive into the recipes themselves.
However, I was really disappointed to find the first few cover pages badly wrinkled and slightly warped extending from the spine. I haven't even had the chance to spill anything on it myself yet!

This book has been an excellent addition to our sunday night Game of Thrones dinners. An extra excuse to hang out with your friends and chow down on amazing food, while recovering from Martin's latest murder, is always welcome. The dual recipes that show you the medieval version alongside a modernized one are really cool, and fun to try out.

Obviously, I haven't tested many of the recipes yet, but I have done enough medieval style cooking to know that the ones in this book will be tasty. Whenever possible, the book gives you medieval and modern methods for the same item. The recipes are fairly easy to prepare and where some of the ingredients may be exotic, there are substitutes provided. For those who are fans of A Song of Ice and Fire or Game of Thrones, the book is divided into the regions of Westeros with recipes from each region based on what is mentioned in the novels. You can dine at Winterfell one evening and lunch in Dorne, the next afternoon. The only fault I've noticed so far is a publisher's error in the table of contents. It lists "Bowls of Brown" on page 158, when it is actually on page 152. It looks delicious, so now you will know where to find it.

This is an excellent cookbook. It could stand on its own apart from the series it was written for due to the quality in writing, and in pictures. If more people demonstrated passion of this magnitude in their lives the world would most certainly be a better place. Bravo!

Half of my Thanksgiving recipes came from this book. The recipes are well thought out, and turn out wonderfully. I like that some have "medieval" and "modern" versions. They don't let the nerdy style get in the way of quality.

The heart lies and the head plays tricks with us, but the eyes see true. - Syrio Forel

Never have these words rung more true with this modern twist on medieval recipes for this incredibly delectable cookbook: A Feat of Ice and Fire. Created by superfans and amateur chefs Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Sariann Lehrer have clearly researched and trialed out more than 100 recipes to delight the eyes of hardcore fans of the infamous novels by George R.R. Martin and the HBO series. What better way to feed the heart and mind (and more importantly, the body) while awaiting fans for the next novel/series than by cooking and sampling Sweet Lemon Cakes, Mulled Wine, or even Honey Locusts if you dare.

Beginning with an open letter from the great author himself, the recipe book opens your culinary tastes to the many different regions that exist in Westeros. From the Seven Kingdoms and beyond, this cookbook details both the traditional medieval recipe that would have been used for the period of time, to moving up to the next level for a more modern day palate.

Including guides to setting up your own grand feast fit for a king, full colour images of all recipes and quote references to all five novels published, A Feast of Ice and Fire will definitely live up to your expectations.

Food is Coming! And it is gloriously awaiting

I love this recipe book! I'm a decent cook, but I tend not to have the time or patience for overly complicated meals. The meals are hearty and relatively simple. I love the oatcakes for morning breakfast, the trout with bacon was delicious, the quails drowned in butter were juicy, and the sister's stew was a novel cooking experience for me that turned out great. So far the salads and sides have been tasty too. I'm going to recommend this book to my brother, and I can't wait to try the rest of the book!

It has interesting recipes to choose from. It will tell you what you need to cook the food and what tools to use. The instructions isn't too confusion and it will show you how to cook simple things like soft boiled eggs and the basic stuff that most recipes ask for to complicated stuff and what you can substitute with. I am pleased with this cookbook.

I love the recipes in this book and how closely they follow the descriptions in the book. There are usually two versions of every dish: a medieval version based on a historical recipe and a modern interpretation. I've only cooked a few things so far, but the recipes are easy to follow, the pictures are beautiful, and they make great food to eat while watching the show! The only thing that I wish is that the show included more of the food--they're really missing out on an opportunity when someone already did all of the research to recreate the delicious foods from the books!

A great collection of recipes for the modern palate, as well as a great ode to the Game of Thrones books. As a medieval/renaissance fan, and a HUGE fan of recipes from that era, I very much appreciated this collection. Each medieval/Elizabethan/Roman recipe had a modernized equivalent, with complete notes on the experience of the food (i.e. sweet, savory, mouth feel, complimentary dish ideas, etc), as well as the original redacted recipe for reference. I already have about half of these earmarked for making in the coming months. If you're a fan of Game of Thrones OR a fan of ancient history cooking, I definitely recommend this one.

I like the cookbook in general but the way I received it made me sort of angry because it was pricey for a cook book. The dust jacket won't stay on the cookbook itself, and it had this huge white sticker on the cover itself that was half torn off. I had to sit and carefully peel off the sticker and it still left gross sticky residue all over the dust jacket which I have now taken off because I couldn't stand it anymore. Usually I get perfect products from the store and I was thoroughly disappointed with the quality control on my book. Like, just send another one or better yet take the time to peel a sticker off that's not supposed to be there in the first place. I don't particularly enjoy receiving defective merchandise. Yes, I consider a messed up and sticky dust jacket a defect.

The other reviews adequately cover the contents of this book, so I'll just say that as a beginning/amateur cook I love this book. I've made the Southron Mulled Wine (great for camping!) and Black Bread especially over and over again.

My only complaint is with the binding. While the printing of this cookbook initially appeared to be of high quality, it has fallen apart after only 2-3 years. For a cookbook, I consider this unacceptable. I have contacted the publisher and they declined to replace the item. So buyer beware.

As a fan of the series I was delighted to stumble on this when I was browsing the store.com. I added it to my wish list and some kind soul bought it for me. The very first recipe I tried was Sister's Stew. It was a hit, and it tasted every bit as good as it sounds in the book. Personally, I feel that the version Davos Seaworth got in the book was the "rich man's" version of Sister's Stew because it was made with Saffron (a very expensive spice). If you wanted to make a "poor man's" version, you could probably leave this out, but I digress. Anyway, the wide variety of recipes and the amount of effort the authors went through recreating them makes this book well worth the money. The cuisines from all corners of Westros and beyond are properly represented along with modern interpretations of the dishes. That's right, the authors sometimes include two versions of the same dish, a medieval version and a modern version with suggestions for replacing some of the more exotic ingredients (helpful, if your local supermarket doesn't carry dragons eggs or locusts). Bottom line, if you want a book that completely recreates the food described in Martin's novel then this is it.

my husband and I are huge fans of Game of Thrones (we even named our puppy Renly). I bought this book so I could try out a few recipes as a surprise for him. Thus far I have made the Bean and Bacon soup, Lemonsweet, Crusty White Bread and Lemon Cakes (these names may not be exactly the name in the book, but close enough). Everything came out really yummy! The instructions were clear and easy. The book cantained a lot of history explaining different techniques and ingredients they would have used during the time of GOT. Each recipe is preceded by a quote from the book were the food is mentioned. This book would be perfect for a GOT dinner party!

I've been working my way through the vegetarian friendly portions of this book and the website (a surprisingly large portion) and it's been a lot of fun. Obviously there have been some taste misfires as very little of this book contains things I would normally cook. But the book is interesting, well researched, and beautiful.

As an avid baker though, I do need to point out that this book does have problems that have nothing to do with changing tastes and prep methods. All of the modern versions of cakes I've tried from this book are over leavened messes. Don't get me wrong they were quite tasty, but they collapsed and the crumb was so fragile the cake could hardly be handled. I think if I make them again I'll just eliminate all the baking soda called for. Also if anyone wants to make the bread in A Feast of Ice and Fire I recommend getting a real bread book like Bread: A Baker's Book of Techniques and Recipes and adapting those techniques to the recipes here.

I made a special birthday dinner with the medieval versions of the leek soup, beef & bacon pie, and armored turnips, followed by the applecakes for dessert. Normally I have to change/ improve/ modify many aspects of a recipe before I am satisfied with it - but all the recipes I tried in this book were perfect on the first try. Thank you to the authors for producing such a quality cookbook - they made the birthday dinner a smashing success for us and our guests!

I can't believe that the 5-star rating has been given by anyone who cooks. THERE IS NO INDEX!!!!!!! Yes, the book is engaging, delightful and well organized but am I to remember where the recipe is? How is it that a cookbook is published with no way to look anything up and thus rendering it rather useless. So disappointed.

I received it as a Christmas present and love it. Aside from being a of A Game of Thrones, I found the recipes themselves very easy to follow yet tasty. There's no need to use any complex equipment, no sous-vide, no raspberry foams, nothing too complicated. Also a lot of the recipes are accompanied by a modern version. It's always interesting to try both and compare. I can't wait to have a themed dinner party using recipes from this book!

My wife got this for me. I am a huge fans of A Song of Ice and Fire. While reading the books, I used to tell my wife about how well GRR Martin described the feast and meals throughout the story. This winter, I saw this book was coming out, and almost jumped out of my kilt in excitement! It arrived today, and I have been reading through it to myself and aloud to my wife. This is ridiculously well done, with loving dedication to the Song of Ice and Fire books, each recipe is accompanied by the quote referencing it in the novels, and authentic medieval recipes and their modern equivalent. They also give pairing suggestions, and whole menu arrangements for throwing a dinner party. If you are a fan of Martin's books, the HBO series, The Lord of the Rings, Medieval Times, Vikings, Knights, or anything of that nature. BUY. THIS. BOOK.

I've only made the apple cakes and the lemonsweet drink so far... but DAMN they were good. This cookbook is great because they have a medieval and modern version of each recipe to try. They quote the books where each food item was mentioned and they sort the entire thing by regions (Winterfell, King's Landing, The Wall, etc.). Super awesome, I would recommend to any GOT or SOIAF fans!

This book is really pretty awesome!

Let me add an addendum here; I haven't made any of the recipes as of yet. I will! Maybe...when I feel like it. Look, I'm busy. I'm a busy lady.

However, it's a really cool insight into not only Westerosi cuisine, but also into our medieval tastes.

Also, the food photography is amazing, just saying.

This cookbook is great! Its very informative and easy to follow. The author offers simple substitutions for some of the lesser common ingredients. I can't wait until season 4 starts back up so I can cook a proper feast for all my friends.

Lots of recipes directly inspired by the book. I appreciated the book quotes to go along with the recipes. Reasonable recipes with mostly common ingredients, easy to follow. Great inspiration for a theme party.

This cook book is fantastic! I was pleasantly surprised by the medieval and modern versions of different recipes. The pictures are beautiful and it is easy for me to follow the instructions. Back to the kitchen I go to make more apple cakes!

Some recipes seem to be hit or miss. I had a lot of luck with the modern buttered carrots ( I make these whenever I find heirloom carrots at the store now) and the Apple cakes were fantastic as well. The medieval doughs seem to be lousy. Lemon cakes which I was really excited to make hardened after they cooled down to rocks. Maybe I suck at baking. I like this book for the novelty and would absolutely buy it again but cook with caution.

Obviously as the title states this cookbook targets fans of the Game of Thrones saga. The entries include what a reasonable Medieval Kitchen requires like Aurochs, Savory and Grains of Paradise, etc. and easy substitutes like in these cases beef, thyme and black pepper. The recipes are divided into the six regions with the entries enabling the modern chef to bake with contemporary equipment or the fanatical chef cooking in a medieval manner.

With a nod to Renaissance Faires' food fare and homage to George R.R. Martin's super series, fans will enjoy learning how to properly prepare Dragons Eggs in diverse styles and dining by region with Mutton in Onion-Ale Broth at the Wall; Aurochs with Roasted Leeks in the North; tasty Poached Pears in the South, scrumptious Sweetcorn Fritters at King's Landing that rival in taste the Atlanta south-side bakeries and Bowls of Brown; Dornish Snake with Fiery Sauce in Dorne; and Honey-Spiced Locusts Across the Narrow Sea. With colorful mouthwatering pictures fans will relish this cookbook, but should be warned we armchair warriors are a tad less active than Tyrion and others in the Seven Kingdoms.

This Cookbook is not full of 30 minute easy recipes. The food is often time consuming to make, and requires considerable effort. That being said, I love the book. Following the recipe is pretty easy, the authors have put enough history in the book to hold my interest. From beef and bacon pie to sister stew the recipes are excellent.

Beautiful pictures, easy to understand recipes, wonderfully researched and written. I wish there were more books like this - I've come across other fan made recipe books for other great series, but none as well done as this one. Every recipe I've tried so far has been delicious and gorgeous, and a big hit at Game of Thrones viewing parties!

To those that love to cook and love Game of Thrones this book is amazing, the recipes are fantastic.
My favorite part of this book is that it gives an excerpt from the books where the recipe was used and who was making/eating it.

My son has his degree in Culinary arts and working on his Masters in Nutrition. He has been making a few changes to modify the recipes but really likes the book.
Once again cheaper here then in the store.

I received the item in perfect condition, which is always a plus.

I only flipped through the book because it's going to be a Christmas present for a friend but it looks amazing! The pictures are accurate and delicious and the recipes are just like the books. My only con would be that some of the recipes aren't very appetizing... though I knew that when I purchased the book.
My friends are huge fans of the Song of Ice and Fire series and I'm pretty sure they'll love this!

I must say, this book has not quite lived up to my expectations. I was very excited to get my copy, and when it first arrived immediately cooked up a storm for my wife. She got very, very sick.

As a way of thanking the doctor who was tending to her illness, I tried the second recipe. He died on the spot, and without his care, my wife died soon thereafter.

I guess what happened next was my own fault; there was an entire section in the book for hosting parties - I must've tried six different dishes for the wake of my wife's funeral.

Everyone died.

I unfortunately ordered The Unofficial Game of Thrones Cookbook: From Direwolf Ale to Auroch Stew - More Than 150 Recipes from Westeros and Beyond before this one (my incessant need to buy anything asoiaf-related), and it was a disappointent. Recipes that weren't related to the book, no pictures, no glossy pages....pretty much BORING. This, on the other hand, the "official cookbook." It was made by diehard blog fans and GRRM even gives you an introduction. I'm going to break the book down so that you can decide whether or not this book is for you.

INTRODUCTION - you get a short and sweet introduction from GRRM

LOOK/STYLE - this book is gorgeous, with glossy pages and tons of pictures. Looks beautiful!

STOCKING YOUR MEDIEVAL KITCHEN - this will tell you how to properly prepare your kitchen for these recipes (it's not too difficult or expensive) and common substitutes for medieval ingredients. For example, they tell you that aurochs should be replaced with beef or bison (aurochs are extinct). They also tell you how to make sauces that may be required for recipes (examples - roux, medieval pastry dough, medieval fish sauce).

RECIPES BY REGION - the book breaks down recipes for you by region. Pretty cool, huh? There's the Wall, the north, the south, King's Landing, Dorne, and across the Narrow Sea.

BOOK RELEVANCE - recipes are taken from meals straight from the book, and the book is even quoted.

DIFFICULTY - since a lot of these recipes are obviously medieval-esque, it's not always easy. There are lots of pies, soups, and wine, and not always the most common ingredients. However, some of the recipes have two versions: a "medieval" and "modern." For example, there is Medieval Leek Soup and Modern Leek Soup. They have different tastes, and the medieval one calls for Poudre Forte (which they tell you how to make in the "stocking your medieval kitchen.") They do this for a LOT of recipes and I think it's a really neat idea, since medieval dishes can be too unusual for some people's palates or too complex to make.

Basically, this book is just all-around amazing. With its beautiful, glossy pictures and pages, varieties of recipes, and best of all - GRRM's stamp of approval, you can't go wrong with this.

I love the description of the GoT series. Especially of the food. You can literally put an authentic medevil meal strait from the books or show to your dining table. They conveniently include other ingredients that can be substituted with all of the recipes. In case you can not find cornish hens or saffron or something of the like. well worth the buy for your own household if you love to cook or a friend.

Well, it's not a story, it's cookbook....I don't know why I had to fill out the stuff above. But anyways, this was a Christmas to my aunt and uncle, and they love cooking, and they love this show, so I thought this would be perfect for them. They love it.

It's a beautiful book, very enjoyable visually with all the luscious pictures you could want. Very tasty looking recipes that aren't impossible for the average cook. A perfect Christmas gift for my husband, who loves all things medieval - or pseudo-medieval, as the case may be!

Buy it! That's it. Sansa's Lemon Cakes? Count me in! Easy to understand and not only does it have the original ingredients, but each recipe also comes in a "modern" way, basically with modern ingredients that are common to find.
