Being a devoted fan of Ken Follett, this was another great adventure. From start to finish it was great. My wife and daughter has also read it on thier Kindles and liked the book. Read a few not so hot by Follett but this was a good one.

well once again in the renown genre of this author he has outdone himself. Such a wonderfully written historical story that keeps the reader just turning the pages to enjoy what is to occur next in the saga's.

this genre is what readers search for in their romantic connection to the past and live of people that could easily be our own ancestors.

I have read many of Ken Follet's books and absolutely love them all. "Place Called Freedom" is no exception. The history is correct and the characters are very believable. His books arouse a lot of emotion in me.

Another great Follett novel. I got into Follett's books about 2 years ago with a chance pick up of Pillars of the Earth. I have continued to read all he has written and have not been disappointed with his earlier writings or with those published recently. If you are searching for good reading material with a plot that leaves you guessing, then this author is for you. His including of the history of the time is also a great reason to reach for his books. Very well researched. First rate author.

This is the second novel by Ken Follett I have read. I really enjoyed the fortitude of Mack and Lizzie. There characters were genuine to m e. I will definitely be buying several more novels by this amazing author. Thank you fir keeping me intrigued from the beginning to the end.

As usual Ken Follett captures his readers with historic details and exciting characters. He tells us the story of those enslaved by tradition and mans fight for independence from the coal mines owned by English Lords and Barons. I highly recommend this book.

I only discovered Ken Follett in the last couple years and am now going back to find previous books he wrote - I am interested in his characters immediately and cannot wait to see what will happen to them

The unexpected -- but plausible and believable -- twists in the plot of this novel kept me turning (electronic) pages on my Kindle. The geographical moves, the different lifestyles and range of characters again demonstrated Follett's excellence. The ending was unexpected and as I read it, I smiled. Great book.

I really like Follett's writtings but I thought this one was lacking in depth and discription as compared to some of his other historical fiction. To me it was to "hurried" , like he was meeting a deadline instead of allowing us to be absorbed in this story.

Ken Follett has been an extraordinary author in my book but I was disappointed in this one. His mixture of history, adventure, sex and triumph in this book was just like every other sex/adventure/blah/boring book out there.

This was an exciting story and one which I learned about conditions in the early days of our country. Ken Follett has the ability to follow his characters as they develop along with their relationships.

Absolutely wonderful! Could not put it down. Follett needs to continue the story, making it a trilogy as he has with some of his others. His work is outstanding. The characters were extremely realistic and the history accurate. My kind of reading.

I loved this book. It is all about the human spirit, good and evil, justice. It is part of our history. It tells the story about the history of our country that you do not get in history books. It is also a beautiful love story.

This was a good read but not his best. The story line is very similar to many of his books. I did enjoy that it takes place in an historic time including what life was like during that period of time, especially the tobacco growing in Virginia.

Enjoyable story about how difficult life was for the average person in the mid 1700's. Upward mobility was frowned upon. Set on the context of our current expectations it is hard to imagine surviving and being happy. But then there are people today with as difficult as those depicted. Or are there?

Wow, can't believe anyone gave this book 5 stars. I just finished it and wished I hadn't. It's boring and predictable and the characters are forgettable. I wonder if Mr. Follett wrote this while still in school and the publisher thought he could get away with making money off this stinker. Some of the historical information was interesting, but that's the only thing keeping me from giving it 1 star. I've enjoyed much of Ken Follett's work, but this isn't one of them.

A glimpse at the difficult times of the Scottish coal miners and man's desire to free. Greed, passion, and love story between two people at the extreme difference of stations in society. Excellent reading, a real page turner.

While I think it would be difficult for Follett to top a few of his own previous works, this novel falls far short of what I would have expected from such a detail-oriented writer.

The hardcover book was misleading by its sheer size, since one might expect a deep, intense story to unwind over seven or eight hundred pages. It's actually less than four hundred. The jacket also teased me with visions of a long epic spanning several decades, as Follett did so brilliantly with "The Pillars of the Earth," or as in the style of Michener with any one of his books.

As I ploughed through the pages, I kept waiting for a surprise situation to develop. As mentioned by other reviewers, the book is highly predictable, and contains a lot of flat action narrative that I guess is supposed to excite the reader. By the last twenty or so pages, the book had gotten ridiculous and I was skimming over it all just to get it over with.

This book is totally forgettable. What a shame.
